Barrymore Theater Play Julius Caesar Essay
1.The Hill District: The Hill District is a historic African American collection of
neighborhoods in the city of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Many Pittsburghers refer to
it as The Hill . August Wilson was raised in The Hill district until his family moved
to Hazelwood, which consisted of mostly white people. The Hill District was the
setting for nine of the plays in August Wilson s 10 play Pittsburgh Cycle.

Caesar is giving this advice to Black Mary. The significance of the advice in relation
to the play is; Caesar is a man of color which is supposed to be a disadvantage, yet
he is more successful than other man of color because he made the most of what
he had, like selling hoecakes off the back of a wagon, and cooking them over coal,
and when got beans he d sell them right out the pot. Even when trouble hit and
police ran him out of the corner because he did not have a license, but he did not let
that stop him, so he got a license. He did everything he needed to do , to be as
successful as he is now. He did not let the color of his skin hold him back. Caesar
himself only has one good eye, which is a disability to people who have two good
eyes but a privilege to people who are blind. The quote is trying to convey the idea
that a person that is not capable can gain respect among people that are less capable

Modern Family Changing Sitcoms
Over time the structure of family has evolved. Since the introduction of television
many sitcoms have shown the development of the early days to the modern. Sitcoms
such as Leave it to Beaver , Growing Pains and Modern Family highlight evolving
families over the last 60 years.
Overtime the image of family has changed and is still changing to this day. In the
1950s sitcom Leave it to Beaver the family was represented as The Perfect Family .
There was no same gender marriage, all the characters were white American s and
there was a low divorce rate. The family image was to look perfect and fit into the
crowd as most families were nuclear. The setting of Leave it to Beaver was an
averaged sized house with precise decorations and ornaments, ... Show more content

In Growing Pains Maggie Seaver the mother of three children decides to go back to
work. Jason Seaver who is the father now has to stay at home and look after his
children. The home front is no longer the woman s job, more fathers are choosing
to stay at home to cook, clean and look after the children. Growing Pains is
representing that fathers can stay at home while their wife goes out to work. The
episodes are about how father knows best as he tackles through the life of his three
children with a sense of humour. Being a stay at home father is very accepted as
more fathers are deciding to stay at home to look after the house and children. It is
becoming normal that women go out to work instead of staying home. The strong
stereotype of the housewife is not so common these days as it was then, the
breadwinner now can be the mother. Leave it to Beaver was made in 1957 where
the housewife and the breadwinner was clear stereotypes and was the way that
families had to run to be a perfect
Hydrogen And Its Effects On The Environment Essay
Data from U.S. Department of Energy shows that the United State people consumes a
huge amount of petroleum and import more petroleum from other countries. The
usage of fossil fuel is releasing a huge amount of carbon dioxide into the environment,
and with the huge amount of consumption there will be a huge amount of carbon
dioxide released into the environment. Also, most of the petroleumis located in
countries that have political tension, which can affect the supply of petroleum. To
avoid this problem, we might consider different kinds of alternative fuels that can be
used for vehicles. Hydrogen is considered to be one of the most promising ones
because hydrogen it can provide an unlimited amount of resources, while petroleum
had a limited amount of consumption. There are other kinds of alternative fuels such
as Ethanol, Propane, Natural Gas, Biodiesel, and Electricity. However, using
hydrogen is one of the best option we do not have to worry about fuel shortage or
polluting the environment. This is because hydrogen can be obtained from organic
compounds. Organic compounds make up most of the gasoline, natural gas, and
propane. We can obtain hydrogens by separating hydrogen and carbon, which has to
go through the process of heating or reforming. Another way to obtain hydrogen is
through electrolysis which requires an electrical current to separate water into oxygen
and hydrogen molecules. One of the problems is that the currently require a lot of
money and effort
The Association Between Quebeckers And How Much The...
This paper will explore the association between Quebeckers and how much the
average Quebecker really likes Canada on a scale from really dislike (0) to really
like (100). This association is relevant because the history of division between
Quebec and the rest of Canada has resulted in many referendums and resentment
that thrives today as much as it did in the past. The results may not be shocking,
but the empirical data analysis shows that the average Quebecker does not really
like Canada when the threshold for really like is set at 80 or more out of 100. The
rest of this paper will thoroughly look at the steps that it took to reach this conclusion
including a descriptive summary of the methodological considerations, a detailed...

The former variables is ranked from 0 100 where 0 is really dislike and 100 is
really like, while the latter is simply a nominal variable used for filtering cases.
This means that the province variable was used to narrow the data into Quebec
only results to allow the comparison between the two. They were specifically
chosen because they best fit the direction of the research where I wanted to
explore the relationship between overall feelings towards Canada in a particular
province: Quebec. Neither variable was recoded because it showed to be
unnecessary, in the case of provinces, and illogical for the PES11_11, a scale
variable (highest level of measurement). Since this is a scale variable, I was able to
calculate all the measures of central tendency (measures that tell us the most typical
values) and dispersion (how typical these typical central values are). These statistics
are relevant to calculate because they allow for more meaningful calculations that
allow us to draw more specific and accurate conclusions about claims such as the
standard error, confidence intervals, z scores and statistical significance.
The bar chart in Figure 1 shows the frequency that each Quebecker chose their
feelings about Canada. It shows that a majority of respondents falls at 50 or above
with the most frequent value is 100. Table 1 shows a collection of all statistics

Habits Of Highly Effective People By Stephen R. Covey
Summary of Main Points in 7 Habits of Highly Effective People
This book on 7 Habits of Highly Effective People was written in 1989, is still a great
book today. Stephen R. Covey talked about great habits that we need to encrypt in
our daily living to be effective at work, home and as a person. He explained how the
habits is based on developing our independence. The first habit he talked about was
being proactive in our lives. To be proactive we need to have self awareness of our
actions. We need to take responsibility for the choices we make and take responsible
for those choices.
Second habit is to begin with the end in mind. This is where you develop a vision
of what you want to become and our conscience will decide what values will guide
you and everything that you do should have an end.
Third habit is to put first things first. This is where we need to have discipline to
our day so we make sure that we focus on what is the most important to the least
important. This is where our will power will come into effect so we don t act on our
desires or impulses.
Habit four is the win win thought process. To be successful you need to look at the
problem between you and the other party and approach it with a mutual solution. To
do this it requires understanding and being understood. This way everyone can be
satisfied with the outcome of the solution.
The fifth habit was, seek first to understand them to understood. One important skill
that we need to use is our listening

Essay The Ethical Issues of Legalizing Marijuana
Did you know that almost half of the population in the United States belongs in
jail, according to the law on marijuana? It s true. In 2008 Time Magazine reported
that researchers had found more than 42% of people surveyed in the United States
had tried marijuana at least once (Lynch, 2008). So if marijuana use is so common
in the United States, why should it not be legalized? In this paper I will discuss
both the supporting and opposing positions on the legalization of marijuana. I will
also explore the moral and ethical views for legalizing marijuana. Utilitarianism is
the moral doctrine that we should always act to produce the greatest possible balance
of good over bad for everyone affected by our actions (Shaw amp; Barry, 62).... Show

A Time Magazine article reported that a new study found 44,000 U.S. drivers
involved in a fatal single vehicle car crash between 1998 and 2009. Of those
44,000 drivers, 25% tested positive for drug use; the most common drugs being
marijuana, cocaine and amphetamines (Melnick, 2011). This means on average
(between 1998 and 2009) there were approximately 1,000 U.S. drivers that tested
positive for drug use who were involved in single vehicle car crashes. Ethical
relativism says that right and wrong are only a function of what a particular
society takes to be right and wrong (Shaw amp; Barry, 11). Just based off of the
information reported in this paragraph, I would say that alcohol should be a
banned substance before marijuana To explore the economic benefits of marijuana
legalization we must first look at the amount of marijuana that is purchased by
users. The White House Office of National Drug Policy reported that between 1988
and 1995, Americans spent about 7 billion dollars on the illegal substance,
averaging about a billion dollars a year (Prislac, 2009). This means that annually
there is a billion dollars out there that is subject to no sales tax. The national
average for sales tax is 5%, so if you calculate the billion dollars being spent on
marijuana, this means there is approximately 50 million dollars in sales tax that our
government never gets
William Butler Yeats And His Life
Who knows when a Nobel Prize would have been given to an Irish man if it had
not been for William Butler Yeats? William Butler Yeats is a great figure in the
history of Irish poetry and playwriting. He wrote many poems and plays throughout
his entire life. He was a very modernist man and many of his poems were based on
this, they were ahead of his time beautiful and inspiring. What was behind William
Butler Yeatssuccess, and what phases did he have to go through to get there. This
man has influenced many poems and plays, writing and he has also inspired so many
people around the world.
William Butler Yeats was born on June 13th, 1865 Dublin, Ireland. His death was
in a hotel on January 28th, 1939 in Menton, France. His father, John Butler Yeats
was a lawyer who turned to be an artist. His mother Susan Pollexfun was from a
wealthy family, who owned a shipping business. He grew up in Sligo, Ireland,
Dublin Ireland and London England. He married at forty years of age to George
Hyde and had two children a girl by the name of Anne and then a boy named Michael.
He believed that he had the willpower to do anything that as long as he had it he
could succeed at anything he put his mind to. This belief of willpower had come
from pagan roots. William Yeats was a person who could not stand rudeness in any
way shape or form; he was quick to put a rude person in their place. Yeats was very
good at speaking; he was especial quick at winning arguments or discussions. At first,

Osteogenesis Imperfecta Research Paper
What is osteogenesis imperfecta (OI)? OI, formally known as Brittle Bone
Syndrome, is a genetic bone disorder that affects the body s ability to make bones
strong which causes the bones to fracture easily, often without any apparent cause.
OI affects the collagen in your body which not only makes your bones strong, but
also helps the rest of your body stay strong as well. There are 8 different types of OI
and all of them differ in range of severity. Type 1 OI is the most common and the
mildest form of the 8. OI Type 2 is the most severe. OI can even vary greatly
between individuals of the same family ( Osteogenesis Imperfecta, n.d.). Most cases
of OI are caused by a dominant genetic defect. This means that only one copy of the

Treatments for OI are individualized and dependent upon the severity of the disease
and age of the patient being treated. There is a team of healthcare providers that
provide this treatment for OI including several types of doctors, physical therapist,
a nurse clinician and a social worker. There are 3 types of nonsurgical treatments,
medication being one of them. Medical bisphosphonates are given to the child
either by mouth of IV. This helps slow down resorption of the bone and in more
severe cases, it helps reduce the number of fractures and helps with pain. Another
type of nonsurgical treatment is immobilization, this includes casts, braces and
splints to keep the bones still and in line in order to heal correctly. The last
nonsurgical treatment is exercise. After a child receives a fracture, it is encouraged
to get them up and weight bearing as soon as the bone is healed. Certain exercises
will increase mobility and reduce risk of fractures

Epidemiology of Homeless/Indigent People with Mental Illness
Vulnerable populations are defined in many ways. Variables of the definition are
dependent on the author, their current location and how they believe that they may
assist this population. Vulnerability as defined in a healthcare setting are those with a
greater than average risk of developing health problems by virtue of their
marginalized sociocultural status, their limited access to economic resources, or
personal characteristics such as age and gender (DeChesnay Anderson, 2008).

The Problems behind Immigration Essay
Live is like a sea it has it s calm times and it s angry time you just have keep your
boat stable until this waves pass away and continue on your way but some people
use these waves as excuse to run away and escape from facing their troubles and
problems. if you ask anyone what is your favorite place on this earth? And the
place he or she feels comfortable the most? The answer will be home, so how
would you feel if you had to leave your home for any reason there could be?

almost every country faces these days, so how we can solve this problem? First we

Another disadvantage of immigration is concerned with the social aspect and here I
mean working parents who leave not only their countries but also their families
which can cause major problems in the society because children who are raised by
only one parent are going have problems because they miss their fathers or mothers
and there is no guarantee that they are going to see them in along time which is like
they are orphans who can t see their parents and miss them. Although some countries
support family based immigration like the united states of America but in certain
situations like in order to be admitted through the family preference system, a U.S.
Citizen or LPR sponsor must petition for an individual relative (and establish the
legitimacy of the relationship), meet minimum income requirements and sign an
affidavit of support stating that they will be financially responsible for their family
member(s) upon arrival to the United States. (American immigration council,
November 4, 2010). As you see there is more harm than good for immigration.
Some political reasons can be the problem of immigration for an example some
countries don t give out visas for certain nationalities because of political issues
between them like war and

Summary Of Paul David Tripp s Dangerous Calling
A church is a house of worship where Christians gather to worship and offer
sacrifices. Though all churches have a core function to serve God, they have
different doctrines and ways of worship this, therefore, leads to a difference in
preference of the believers as to which church to go to and to move away. For a
church to stand, it has various things that it should practice. Many authors have
different views concerning the same. This work is hence going to give a report on
how to keep the church standing by different authors. The biblical counselor Paul

are unable to do the same thing. Response: Despite the fact that Bailey is not a
living, breathing human being but rather a highly emotional and intelligent entity, I
respond that Bailey does have a mind. According to Rene Descartes, a being s mind
is vastly different from its matter. In Bailey s case, she has no physical body but is
apparently still capable of entertaining and conveying many human like emotions
using her artificial mind. The 2013 film Her explored much of this same territory in
the sense that artificially intelligent software programs are capable of having
emotions and complex relationships with human beings. Such a machine as
Samantha in Her could have very well passed the Turing Test, which measures a
machine s ability to exhibit intelligent behavior indistinguishable from that of a
human. Regardless,
I Know That Sounds Like Digital Media And Advertising
I know that sounds like Digital Media has no center but of course that s not true:
there are rules (color, placement, context, intent, etc.), and as always, if you know
the rules you can either follow them or break them. Do either of them well and you
ll succeed. There are some concrete aesthetic guidelines you can follow to ensure
your imagery will please the eye. So let s talk about 3 of the major compositional
aesthetic theories, and how they function in Digital Media and advertising: 1. The
Rule of Thirds The Rule of Thirds basically says that if you divide any screen
(television/movie/computer/smartphone) into a grid of equal thirds, the eye is
naturally attracted to the 4 points on the grid where those lines intersect (this
rectangle is commonly referred to as The Golden Section). Look familiar? It
should: if you ve ever turned on the Grid function on your iPhone camera, then you
ve been using The Rule of Thirds for years. So, try using this grid when choosing
an image (most photo editing software programs have something like it, and you
can turn them on and off for easy A/B comparison), and see where those 4 points
land. What do you want people to focus on? And is it near one of those points? If
not, you can either crop the image differently or choose another, but the important
thing to think about is how you want your audience to respond to your imagery and
how you want their eye to travel. The Golden Section can be like a bulls eye for their
focus you can always
Nicotine Informative Speech
Hi class today we are going to talk about recognizing the dangers of nicotine.
Nicotine is a stimulant found in tobacco products such as cigarettes. Tobacco use is a
global epidemic among young people this is why it s important that students become
aware of the dangers of nicotine. Nicotine causes the release of chemicals in the brain
that makes tobaccousers crave tobacco. Since nicotineis addictive it makes quitting
difficult. Nicotine not only affects the brain but it affects the user s whole body.
Nicotine makes the heart work harder to pump blood this extra stress on the heart can
lead to high blood pressure, heart attack and stroke. Smokingcan damage the lungs
by blocking the airways and can lead to lung cancer and other repository diseases.
Smoking not only harms the inside of your body but also damages your skin causing

As a result the body does not get all the oxygen it needs. Some of the symptoms of
Emphysema are shortness of breath, wheezing and coughing. Although
Emphysema has no cure, quitting smoking reduces the speed at which the disease
gets worse. Over 2 million people have Emphysema in the United States,
Emphysema and chronic bronchitis are the third leading cause of death in the
U.S. Today we are going to do an activity where everyone will experience what it
feels like to have Emphysema. Everyone in class will receive a straw. When I say
go everyone should run in place as fast as they can for one minute until I say stop.
After I say stop everyone should hold their nose and put the straw in their mouth and
try to breathe through the straw. This will stimulate how a person with emphysema
breathes. After the activity please write down how you felt like doing this activity.
Now that we have gone over the dangers of nicotine we are going to look at some
statistics about cigarettes and some of the reasons why people might start
Chinese Thought Patterns And Its Cultural Roots
Something to be noted is that people have a tendency to confuse three terms which
are thinking , type of thinking and pattern of thought . The words thinking and type
of thinking are closely related to psychological studies. However, patterns of thought
are relevant to cultural studies. Lian (2002) states that thought pattern is essentially a
cultural concept implicating the way of one s thinking which is mainly in influenced
by his or her cultural background. According to Kaplan(1996),Chinese thought
patterns is the peculiar thought pattern which is considered as spiraling. To make it
clear, Chinese people tend to entail a topic without extending the topic directly to the
point. Despite the fact that some scholars disagree with Kaplan s theoretical
hypothesis, it is universally true that each nation has its own inclination to think.
1.2Some Representative Classification of Chinese Thought patterns and its cultural
roots
Different thought patterns are culturally rooted. The relationship between patterns of
thought and culture is interdependentпјЋDouglas(1980, P. 141) points out, Culture is
really an integral part of the interaction between language and thought. Cultural
patterns, customs, and ways of life are expressed in language; culture specific world
views are reflected in language. Culture can be reflected by what the community does
and thinks while pattern of thought is the mirror or ways of cultureпјЋPattern of
thought is a special part of the social
Wood Work Personal Statement
When I was young, my father taught me that work ethic, practice and perseverance
will get you anywhere in life. I was 12 when he died. Since then, I leaned on my
mother Susie, and my brother Jake. My sister Sarah and her husband Ben have
also crucially impacted my life s choices. They have all pushed me in both
academics and on the mat. Since first grade I ve been an avid wrestler, teaching me
independence, mental toughness and discipline. Igniting my desire I have today,
Ben and I completed a wooden garden pergola in memory of my father the

Giotto Renaissance Art
Art became well known back in the pre historic era when cavemen painted pictures
on the walls. But became really popular during the Renaissances when painters and
sculptors took light. The Renaissances was a great time for art in Italy when land
was being explored and people trying to get back to their ancient Greek and Roman
roots. Writers, Scholars, and Artist alike were reawakened with inspiration from
Ancient Greek and Roman art. The origin of the Renaissancewas traced back to the
late 13th , early 14th century known as the Proto Renaissance . Writers wanted to
revive the language while artist wanted to revive the art. A Florentine artist named
Giotto was famous for painting a realistic form of the human body. But later in the

What Is The Purpose Of Mythology Compared To The
Ancient...
I. Introduction to Classical Mythology
1. The importance of the Iliad is that it shows us what the early Greeks were like
which is critical to us the descendants intellectually, and in our politics and art.
2. The Greek miracle is the awakening of Greece which with the disappearance of old
things created a whole new way to look at the world.
3. Compared to the Egyptians, the Greeks were more relaxed and casual evident in
their portrayal of the gods. The Greeks made their gods look human which had never
been done before and they felt at home with them, fearing them yet still at ease
knowing all about what they did and even laughing at them. This is much more
relaxed than the Egyptians as they didn t make their gods human nor did they dare
laugh in their presence.
4. Over time Zeus went from the most powerful god, to a deity that has a moral code
that was enforced upon others but not himself, punisher of those that violate it, to
punisher of those that did wrong and friend of justice. In general Zeus went from a
dictator like state to a more mature and just form of ruler.
5. The three main purposes of myths were for entertainment, religious purposes, and
early literature and science.
II. Chapter 1: The Gods
1. Cronus (Saturn): Cronus was the king of the Titans, the children of the heavens
and earth, and reigned until his son Zeus dethroned him and took power for himself.
According to the Romans after being dethroned, Saturn fled to Italy and brought

Teenagers In The Movie Rebel Without A Cause
Teenagers have an unhealthy and dangerous obsession with automobiles which, has
increased and in some cases even become deadly, which can be accredited to the
production of movies featuring teenagers and their cars. The teenagers of America
look up to the actors in these movies as role models, so when they see characters in
movies running away into an unrealistic happy ending and stunts that are done by
professional stunt doubles, they want to do the same. These movies promote reckless
behavior in the usage of automobiles and encourage teenagers to live in a fantasy
world of rebellion that proves to be costly. As concerned parents, we strongly suggest
that the major movie studios should not produce anymore movies centered around
teenagers and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With a car, teenagers can escape from their parents and go wherever they want.
Popular places that teens go to are drive ins, malt shops, and parking lots. Drive ins
and parking lots are notorious for sexual actions. We do not want our teenagers
exposed to this type of conduct, especially through movies. Teen pregnancy rates
have increased dramatically with almost 10% of teens between fifteen to nineteen
getting pregnant at the peak in 1957. Much of this increase is due to the automobile
changing the dating culture allowing for more opportunity for privacy which led to
increased sexual activity. Drive in movies, parking and cruising became common teen
activities. In 1954, there were 4,200 drive in movie theatres across the country and
they were commonly associated with amourous teenage encounters in the back seat
of the car. With these reasons being said, this explains why automobiles should not be

Independent Travel And Flashpackers
The concepts of solo travel and independent travel are used throughout this section.
Independent traveller is a phrase to describe diverse tourists who are different
from the mass, organised tourists. They have different needs and motivations than
mass tourists. It is known as fully independent traveller (Wilson, 2004). Chai
(1996) describes independent travellers as tourists who do not travel via a fully
inclusive package or in groups and the duration they stay compared with other
tourists is longer. According to Hyde and Lawson (2003) in a study entitled The
Nature of Independent Travel , three characteristics which has identified in the
nature of independent travel such as the experiences of a traveller is an itinerary,
travellers are willing to take risks in vacations and travellers possess a desire for the
unplanned experiences. It can be... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Despite the traditional term backpacker that is commonly known as independent

Flashpackers are the contemporary key evolved from backpackers where it is
defined as backpackers who travels with an expensive backpack or troller type and
stays in various types of accommodations. These travellers are normally applied to
older travellers where they have greater disposable income than the traditional
backpackers. On the other hand, solo travel is referred to the status of one s arrival
status (Foo, 1999). Solo travellers may arrive in the country alone, but it doesn t
mean that they will travel alone for the entire duration. They will be connected and
communicate with other tourists or locals people. Tourists using the holiday

The Impact Of Pierre Elliot Trudeau On Canada
Pierre Elliot Trudeau was the Prime Minister of Canada between 1968 79 and
between 1980 84. He was arguably one of the most controversial people in
Canadian history, and was widely known across the world. When Trudeau was
elected as Prime Minister, he became extremely popular due to his charismatic
personality, which was different compared to previous leaders. This sparked
Trudeaumania , the name given to his campaign due to his popularity among
Canadians. However, before he became Prime Minister, he reformed the laws in the
Criminal Code and liberalized certain laws on abortion and homosexuality while he
was Justice Minister. In 1969, Trudeau implemented the Official Languages Act,

First of all, while he was Justice Minister, he reformed laws in the Criminal Code
for divorce, and liberalized homosexuality and abortion. This essentially allowed
homosexuals and other people to have more freedoms in Canadian society.
Moreover, the Official Languages Act made French Canadians feel as if they were
finally a part of Canada. This was because their language was widely available, and
Trudeau catered to them by making French an official Canadian Language.
Furthermore, the October Crisis proved to Canadian citizens that Trudeau was a
smart and strong leader. This was due to the fact that Trudeau was able to defuse the
situation without having more lives being lost. Also, he successfully stopped the
Quebec separatist movement, which would have been catastrophic to the rest of
Canada. Likewise, the Charter of Rights and Freedoms gave Canadians guaranteed
individual freedoms for the first time. It also enabled women and Aboriginals in
Canada to finally feel treated as equal people. Finally, Canada was finally able to
have access to their own Constitution after it was patriated from the British in 1982.
This allowed Canada to deal more effectively with language and other rights issues. It
also gave Canada a sense of nationalism, as they were truly independent from Britain.
Therefore, Pierre Elliott had an extremely significant impact on
A Comparison Of Braveheart And The 13th Warrior
Introduction
According to Army Doctrine Reference Publication (ADRP) 6 22, leadership is the
process of influencing people by providing purpose, direction, and motivation to
accomplish the mission and improve the organization . This essay will analyze two
different leaders, William Wallace from Braveheart and Ahmad ibn Fadlanfrom The
13th Warrior. After analyzing each leader, this essay will transition to compare the
leadership lessons, concepts, perspectives, and styles I observed. Then this essay will
suggest how Army leaders can employ the aforementioned perceptions to motivate
others to accomplish missions and improve their organizations. Additionally, this
essay will recommend specific groups within the Army enterprise that should watch
Braveheart and The 13th Warrior through the lens of leadership to gain a thorough
understanding of these leadership traits so they can improve their leadership styles
for others to follow and aspire.

Scotland s King Alexander III dies with no heir to the throne in 1280. William

atrocities of King Edward the Longshanks. His Uncle presumes guardianship of

The Social Issue Of Immigration
Immigration has been a major topic since the beginning of the United States of
America. This phenomenon is what helped the establishment of this country; and
even today it continues to have an impact in in most aspects of the lives of North
American s. The subject has also brought much criticism and created divided
opinions about its immediate and long term impact. Migration itself it s not a
problem, but the modern dilemma of who is allowed to migrate and reside
permanently in a country legally. It is interesting to explore this subject under three
basic theories that Sociologydeals with: symbolic interactionism, conflict theory and
social functionalism. Each theory brings us closer to understand some of the reasons
why illegal immigrationis controversial today. The purpose of this paper is not to
persuade but to explore and expose some ideas on a recurrent social issue. The first
theory to be discussed is symbolic interactionism, which can be related to the term
illegal immigration and some of the other words that derive from this. The main idea
covered and supported by this theory, is the fact that communication is based on the
exchange of symbols. In a sense language, words etc. are symbols, and the
terminology given to the current social problem contributes to the creation of
perceptions that people have. For instance, when an average American thinks of the
word illegal immigrant the first thing that comes to mind is a brown/Hispanic
immigrant, most likely a
The Life Of Queen Royale
Kill me now. I stood on the balcony and looked out at the green expanse of lawn
before me. The canopy glowed flat against the elegant backdrop of trees, surrounded
by men in morning suits and women in formal evening gowns. Ants at a picnic, I
thought. Mingling and gossiping and snacking on bits of food. Perfectly content.
Perfectly boring.
I fidgeted with the little bow on my dress, avoiding eye contact with Mother. Queen
Izellah stood on the other side of the garden next to some duchess or another, her
black hair perfect and her blue satin dress spotless. The spot next to her was empty,
waiting for me to fill it.
Expectation for a life full of small talk, little cakes and fake smiles awaited me in that
spot.
I would escape it if I could.
My destiny as the future Queen had been planned out for me years ago, when
Mother found out she was pregnant. Being Princess Royale had it s perks, of
course, and I loved it, of course, but on days like this, on a boring day like this, I
hated it. Feeling the little bow begin to come loose, I took my hands off it and
clasped them in front of me instead. I really should leave. I really should go back to
that luncheon. And quick, before the Duchess or worse: one of her daughters spotted
me.
Princess? I turn around when I heard the rustle of fabric, meaning the voices owner
was curtsying. And as she rises, I recognize her as Lady Georgiana, one of the Duke
of Etre s daughters and the bride. She s still in her wedding dress, a

Have you ever wondered whether or not there was any correlation between gender

there was a direct correlation between the two. Our goal was to see if genderdid in
fact influence one s choice of major, or if it had no influence at all. After proper

students generally have college majors concentrated in certain areas and industries.

Both of these articles are accurate examples as to a potential reason of females
having specific college majors. Social norms may have an impact on college major
choice for women as well. Women tend to be less motivated by the promise of
monetary success and more by their passions. Our survey results supported this
social norm because the vast majority of females said that they chose their major
because they enjoy that field of study, whereas the vast majority of males said they
chose their major to obtain a high salary.
Males:
Through thorough research and survey analysis we were able to conclude that
there tends to be a higher population of male students pursuing Engineering and
Business majors compared to all other college majors. Not only is this true at
North Carolina State University, but we also found this true for other universities
in the US as well. Out of 51 males who completed our survey, roughly 22 percent
informed us they were enrolled in some form of Business major, whereas only 8
percent of the females surveyed were enrolled in a business major. Not only were
there a higher percentage of males pursuing Business majors, but there were also a
higher percentage of males seeking an Engineering degree. Out of 51 males
surveyed 25 percent expressed they were currently enrolled in hopes of seeking an
Engineering degree, while only 2 percent of all females surveyed were

The children of this new millennium will be barraged with more electronic media
than ever in history. The nature of a child s curiosity will naturally drawn him or her
to a video game or interactive television. The other influence is that cable operators,
television networks and video game publishers target children (and their parents) as
part of the consumer base. Children will not be able to escape electronic media and
in the future may be drawn more and more toward it.
Though the new media saturated world may be wonderful in many ways, what
suffers may be traditional educational practices. If children spend their time
watching TV and playing video games they are not spending a great deal of time
reading and writing. Statistics collected by the U.S. Department of Education s
National Center for Educational Statistics (NCES) show that student achievement
in both reading and writing has been declining in recent years. The NCES 1998
Writing Report Card states that 16 percent of 4th and 8th graders and 22 percent of
12th graders have not mastered basic writing skills (March, 1999). The NCES 1998
Reading Report Card shows that across grades 4, 8, and 12, no more than 40 percent
achieved the proficient level of reading and only 7 percent of 4th graders, 3 percent
of 8th graders, and 6 percent of 12th graders could read at the advanced level.
The average, or typical, American student is not a proficient writer. Instead,
Early Childhood Education Class Analysis
I have always had a strong passion for seeing children s minds grow and learn new
things. Therefore, I decided to major in early childhood education when I entered
college. Through this class we have had a lot of discussion on the idea of
globalization and education. We have discussed the effects of globalization on
educationas a whole, therefore I decided to dive deeper into the ideas of technology
and education, the quality verses the quantity of education, and the growth of global
learning.
Technology in education has risen to new heights and has allowed people to have
more opportunities in life. The world is rapidly changing and people in the world
need to be able to form to these rapid changes. If people do not continually progress

I personally feel that the quality of an education leads to the quantity of an
education. We must first, start small and expand people s minds in meaningful
ways. Students should be able to get one on one interaction with their teachers and
be able to receive an overall good education in a developed and underdeveloped
country. According to Mark Smith (2008), who wrote an article on incorporating
globalization into education, in the process we have almost forgotten that education
ever had any purpose other than to promote growth. Children receiving an education
is a major plus, but what matters is the quality of education in which the child
receives. The amount of schooling a child obtains does not play a key role in how
intelligent the child is, but the quality of education allows children to dive deeper
into thinking, therefore there intelligence can be measured. But the quantity of
schooling is a very crude measure of peopleВґs knowledge and cognitive skills.
(Hanushek, 2005, p. 16)
Global learning, in my opinion, is a learning based on the idea on being educated
about different things around the world; cultures, religions, languages, and different
races. For our world to become more globalized, future generations need to be
educated on other things besides math and science. According to S. Chinnammai:
Education should not become a means of westernizing the world. On the contrary, it
should treat each unique culture and society with due respect, realizing that global
education is not only learning about the West, but also studying different cultures of
the world, using different approaches, ways of teaching and different media. (p.
Comparing Women In Aeneid And Ovid s Metamorphoses
Women play an integral role in today s society by utilizing their intelligence,
innovative, and leadership capabilities in an influential way. Since the beginning of
time, a multitude of women have made an exceedingly great impact on the world s
economical, social, and political spectrum. However, women are still deemed inferior
to men in past and present cultures. The inferiority of women has been portrayed
through various avenues such as literature and written works. The Virgils Aeneidand
Ovid s Metamorphoses women characters are three perfect depictions of how
women in today s society are dominated, disregarded, and discredited. In Ovid s
Metamorphoses, Ovid s character Daphne is a perfect depiction of women in today s

According to the dictionary, discredit is defined as, to harm the good reputation of
someone or to cause someone to seem false or unreliable. For example, as the
reader examines book four of the Aeneid, the reader is introduced to an intelligent,
beloved, and powerful king Queen of Carthage. Line 93 94 states, ... the heart of
Carthage displaying Phoenician power . This displays her city being a mighty and
powerful land that has a strong leader in place to keep the city intact. However,
Virgil discredited Dido s image by making her an unreliable leader when he made
her character fall in love with Aeneas and neglected her responsibility. According
to the book, lines 214 215 states, Dido care no more for appearances, nor for her
reputation . The lines implyed that she did once care for her reputation and her
appearance, but Virgil made her character a driven mad woman by the end. Lines
594 and 595 states, So, driven by madness, beaten down by anguish, Dido was
fixed on dying. A once honorable woman was quickly depicted as unreliable crazed
individual. The treatment of the character Dido that Virgil portrayed are his thoughts
towards women in the society he lived in. He displayed women as unreliable and
discredited their image of leading a group of
Metaphors In The Battle Of Somme
Additionally, Sheers reinforces the preciousness of human life and the violence of
war by using language features that include verbs, imagery and metaphors through,
This morning, twenty men buried in one long grave, a broken mosaic of bone linked
arm in arm, their skeletons paused mid dance macabre. The metaphor of broken
mosaic highlights the violenceand impact of war. Broken alone suggests that the
soldiers were blown to pieces by the Germans. Sheers however, described these
fragmented bones in a respectful was. This was respectfully described as a broken
mosaic because the 38th Welsh Division soldiers went to fight for their country and
unfortunately died because of it. As a reader, we must understand that they
sacrificed their lives to fight for their families, friends and country when they went
to war in the Battle of Somme. Referencing to broken, it also tells us that they
families of the soldiers were mentally broken as well. The Battle of Somme tore
families apart and broke parent s hearts. Sheers wants to imply the knowledge to the
reader that violence of war impacts many other people including the soldiers
themselves. It damaged the families of the 38th Welsh Division soldiers. Although
war has broken each soldier a sense of brotherhood is shown through the verblinked
in, linked arm in arm. All these soldiers went to fight together and happen to have
died together. This shows the strength of mankind and unity through tough times as
these men were

which he wanted to fulfil, and which opposed those of his mother. Greatly influenced
by the Enlightenment ideals of freedom and equality, his ideas of abolishing serfdom,
carrying out the reforms of religious toleration, and promoting welfare for the people
best reflected the Enlightenment ideals.
In the political order of the Holy Roman Empire, neither freedom, religion, nor

The welfare of the people was of considerable concern to him, and, being a well

contributed to their welfare by freeing them from the superstitions and prejudices

Joseph wrote a system where it was made necessary that each state had primary

people from their own follies and for their good, an ideal coincidental with
monarchal interests. Therefore, Joseph s government is an Enlightenment ideal
because the government is doing something good for the people, and his power over
everything allowed him to work for the welfare of his
Diversity Of Gifted Students
seen a widening of white black and white Hispanic achievement gaps (Reardon, et al,
2013). A broad, sweeping federal definition would, I feel, achieve similar outcomes.
Some gifted students, in particular students of minorities and subgroup populations,
may not be easily identified for reasons that can be attributed to cultural or socio
economic differences, to differences in opportunity to learn, to disabling conditions
that may mask giftedness, or to biases in the identification process (p. 329). The
differences among these subgroups of students can affect student engagement,
achievement, and the ultimate probability of them achieving their full potential
(p.330). For example, a gifted African American student from a low socio economic

Teachers, administrators, parents, students, and community members in a district
are by far the most aware of the diversity present in those areas and how best to
serve their gifted student populations, specifically in relation to ethnic, racial, and
socio economic concerns. A local definition of giftedness allows for policy making
to occur on home turf, where best practices catering to specific groups of gifted
students can be utilized and the scope of the definition is able to be more succinct in
targeting certain student needs. As the National Association for Gifted Children
(NAGC) states, the goal of a definition of giftedness is to provide the framework for
gifted education programs and services, and guide key decisions such as which
students will qualify for services, the areas of giftedness to be address with
programming, when the services will be offered, and even why they will be
offered (NAGC Def). Districts have the advantage of knowing their students,
populations, and communities. There are, however, some downsides in allowing
localities to write their own definition of giftedness and the ramifications of what
follows. First, the school district must have qualified administrators and educators
creating the policies. According to a study done by the NAGC for the 2012 2013
school year, 43 percent of states responding to a survey do not require professionals
working in gifted and talented programs to have certification or endorsement in gifted
and talented education. Fairly bleak numbers, although a federal mandate requiring
gifted programs in every school district will most likely change this fact. Next, locally
defined characteristics of giftedness
The Success of the Simpsons Essay
The Success of the Simpsons
The Improbable Long Term Success of The Simpsons
When examining the history of modern prime time television, there is a certain
pattern that virtually every successful show inevitably falls into. After a period of
initial success, perhaps lasting three or four years, the writing on the show becomes
stale by using the same format and same jokes over and over. The viewing audience
becomes bored, and eventually, the show fades into television oblivion. Or, as Jeff
MacGregor states in The New York Times, Historically

The older portion of the viewers takes additional pleasure in recognizing the allusion
to the famous horror film. Another simple example of multilevel humor features
Homer sitting on the couch, while another Homer walks past the outside window.
Although it takes place in a matter of seconds, this scene is one of countless silly but
curiously sensational quirks that makes the show a masterpiece of tiny, throw away
details that accumulate into a worldview.
Because the producers of The Simpsons understand the current industry guidelines
for humor and political correctness, they are able to create humor by bluntly
crossing these presumed socially acceptable boundaries, while still sending a
positive message. One frequently addressed subject on the show is religion, which
is a normally sensitive issue on television. The Simpsons, however tackles religious
thought head on. In one episode, Homer skips church on a particularly cold, snowy
Sunday and has the best day of his life. After making his patented, space age, out of
this world Moon Waffles (melted caramel and waffle batter wrapped around a stick
of butter), he watches football on T.V. and, upon finding a penny on the ground, asks
aloud, Could this be the best day of my life? After visualizing, among other things,
his wedding day,
The Importance Of Intercultural Dialogue In Canada
Multi culturalism pervades Canada as a nation, a predominately immigrant driven
and sustained country that seems at times to indicate overtly and in part covert
inferences from those who slip through the cycle of immigration without the
opportunity of engaging and by extension impacting the conversation on intercultural
dialogue in Canada. One can cite that majority of Canada s population is comprised
of diverse ethnic and cultural background of immigrants yet the term visible minority
has been harnessed to dichotomize its immigrant community, bit of oxymoron
possibly. Luzviminda, an extremely creative expression of dialogue between Canada
and the various ethnicities that seek to improve or enrich there lives and those of
there love ones. Its epitomizes another avenue of communicative osmosis of cultures
that s enhances and penetrates the social, political and cultural platform from which
they initiate and exchange dialogue. I cannot negate the that fact, while Canada
frames the space for such migration to be possible for immigrant population, it goes
without say that the benefit is dual in nature. Canada s socio economic paradigm is
by virtue very much at a perpetual advantage as a result of its expeditious growth
from the immigrant community. Luzvinminda, stands as a representation of this
intercultural dialogue. Dr. Patrick Alcedo, Associate Professor of the Department of
Dance at York University states that, A portmanteau , Luzvinminda represents the

Political Correctness Essay
Political Correctness
Political correctness is a political ideology, nothing more. I believe political
correctness is a political ideology and it cannot be correct unless it is linked to
genuine transformation. First, I will examine the origins of political correctness to
try to get a clear understanding of what this movement is. Second, I will show you
that political correctness is political and how it became a political ideology. Lastly, I
shall discuss why this ideology does not work.
Political correctness is cultural Marxism. Marx, as cited in Introduction to Social
Science course guide, believed that if people were left to work on their own they
would be more efficient. He had an ideological belief that laborers could actually want

Some members moved into government such as Herbert Marcuse who was the
predecessor to the CIA and other members move into Hollywood.
These beginnings of political correctness would mean very little to us today if it
weren t for the student rebellions in the mid 1960 s .The students as Lind notes
read the book that Marcuse writes, Eros and Civilization . The students do not
have to read lots of heavy Marxism and Marcuse tells them everything they want to
hear. Such as, Do your own thing , If it feels good do it and you never have to go to
work . Marcuse was also the man who created the phrase make love not war .
Political correctness arrived at American Universities.
Therefore, political correctness s true origins have been forgotten and so people have
forgotten what political correctness really is.
Terms such as politically correct thus have a hidden history, uncovering which is
dependent both on the accurate recollection of those who were there, (Cameron,
1995,78).
Now we know where political correctness originated but in order to understand
political correctness as a political ideology we have to first look at what politics is
and second what an ideology is.
Politics is about the distribution of power. In the Introduction to Social Science
course guide it is stated that, politics can be anywhere . Therefore, politics is in the
language we speak. Power is the ability to
Comparison s The Trolley Problem By Judith Jarvis
Thomson
The article, The Trolley Problem , written by Judith Jarvis Thomson, poses an
intense ethical argument. Within the reading, she addresses two of Philippa Foot s
imaginary situations. The first involves a trolley with faulty brakes, and if the
driver should flip the switch to kill five people or just one person. The second is a
similar situation; should a doctor let five patients die or operate on one patient to
take his organs without consent? I will argue that it is not morally permissible to
turn the trolley or to operate without consent. This article starts with an interesting
scenario. A trolley is speeding down its tracks. As the trolley is coming around a
turn, the driver sees five men working on the tracks. Luckily, the driver of the trolley
has the option to flip a switch to make the trolley turn to the right onto a separate
section of the tracks. It is not that simple, though. On the right spur of the tracks, one
man is working. Philippa Foothas arranged that no matter which way the driver
turns, it would be impossible for the workmen to get off the track safely and on
time to avoid being run down by the trolley (Thomson 1395). As a first instinct, the
driver tries to slam on the trolley s brakes to avoid hitting any of the workmen.
Unfortunately, the brakes on the trolley do not work. Thus, the driver is left facing
this situation: should he continue going straight or should he quickly turn the
trolley to the right? If he stays straight, he will continue hurdling towards the five
helpless workmen, inevitably hitting and killing all five of them. If he flips to
switch to turn the trolley right, the driver will undoubtedly hit the lone workman
and take his life (Thomson 1395). Now here is the real catch of the situation: the
reader is the trolley driver. It is up to the reader of this article to decide what route to
take. Would the reader, in the driver s situation, keep the trolley straight, or turn it to
the right? Thomson explains that when she gave such a hypothetical case to several
people, the consensus was overwhelmingly harmonious. Many readers believed that it
was morally permissible for you to turn the trolley (Thomson 1395). Some say that it
is completely necessary to turn the

  • 4. Hydrogen And Its Effects On The Environment Essay Data from U.S. Department of Energy shows that the United State people consumes a huge amount of petroleum and import more petroleum from other countries. The usage of fossil fuel is releasing a huge amount of carbon dioxide into the environment, and with the huge amount of consumption there will be a huge amount of carbon dioxide released into the environment. Also, most of the petroleumis located in countries that have political tension, which can affect the supply of petroleum. To avoid this problem, we might consider different kinds of alternative fuels that can be used for vehicles. Hydrogen is considered to be one of the most promising ones because hydrogen it can provide an unlimited amount of resources, while petroleum had a limited amount of consumption. There are other kinds of alternative fuels such as Ethanol, Propane, Natural Gas, Biodiesel, and Electricity. However, using hydrogen is one of the best option we do not have to worry about fuel shortage or polluting the environment. This is because hydrogen can be obtained from organic compounds. Organic compounds make up most of the gasoline, natural gas, and propane. We can obtain hydrogens by separating hydrogen and carbon, which has to go through the process of heating or reforming. Another way to obtain hydrogen is through electrolysis which requires an electrical current to separate water into oxygen and hydrogen molecules. One of the problems is that the currently require a lot of money and effort

This association is relevant because the history of division between Quebec and the rest of Canada has resulted in many referendums and resentment that thrives today as much as it did in the past. The results may not be shocking, but the empirical data analysis shows that the average Quebecker does not really like Canada when the threshold for really like is set at 80 or more out of 100. They were specifically chosen because they best fit the direction of the research where I wanted to explore the relationship between overall feelings towards Canada in a particular province: Quebec. Neither variable was recoded because it showed to be unnecessary, in the case of provinces, and illogical for the PES11_11, a scale variable (highest level of measurement). Since this is a scale variable, I was able to calculate all the measures of central tendency (measures that tell us the most typical values) and dispersion (how typical these typical central values are). These statistics are relevant to calculate because they allow for more meaningful calculations that allow us to draw more specific and accurate conclusions about claims such as the standard error, confidence intervals, z scores and statistical significance. The bar chart in Figure 1 shows the frequency that each Quebecker chose their feelings about Canada. It shows that a majority of respondents falls at 50 or above with the most frequent value is 100. Covey talked about great habits that we need to encrypt in our daily living to be effective at work, home and as a person. He explained how the habits is based on developing our independence. The first habit he talked about was being proactive in our lives. To be proactive we need to have self awareness of our actions. We need to take responsibility for the choices we make and take responsible for those choices. Second habit is to begin with the end in mind. This is where you develop a vision of what you want to become and our conscience will decide what values will guide you and everything that you do should have an end. Third habit is to put first things first. This is where we need to have discipline to our day so we make sure that we focus on what is the most important to the least important. This is where our will power will come into effect so we don t act on our desires or impulses. Habit four is the win win thought process. To be successful you need to look at the problem between you and the other party and approach it with a mutual solution. To do this it requires understanding and being understood. This way everyone can be satisfied with the outcome of the solution. The fifth habit was, seek first to understand them to understood. One important skill that we need to use is our listening

  • 8. Essay The Ethical Issues of Legalizing Marijuana Did you know that almost half of the population in the United States belongs in jail, according to the law on marijuana? It s true. In 2008 Time Magazine reported that researchers had found more than 42% of people surveyed in the United States had tried marijuana at least once (Lynch, 2008). So if marijuana use is so common in the United States, why should it not be legalized? In this paper I will discuss both the supporting and opposing positions on the legalization of marijuana. I will also explore the moral and ethical views for legalizing marijuana. Utilitarianism is the moral doctrine that we should always act to produce the greatest possible balance of good over bad for everyone affected by our actions (Shaw amp; Barry, 62).... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A Time Magazine article reported that a new study found 44,000 U.S. drivers involved in a fatal single vehicle car crash between 1998 and 2009. Of those 44,000 drivers, 25% tested positive for drug use; the most common drugs being marijuana, cocaine and amphetamines (Melnick, 2011). This means on average (between 1998 and 2009) there were approximately 1,000 U.S. drivers that tested positive for drug use who were involved in single vehicle car crashes. Ethical relativism says that right and wrong are only a function of what a particular society takes to be right and wrong (Shaw amp; Barry, 11). Just based off of the information reported in this paragraph, I would say that alcohol should be a banned substance before marijuana To explore the economic benefits of marijuana legalization we must first look at the amount of marijuana that is purchased by users. The White House Office of National Drug Policy reported that between 1988 and 1995, Americans spent about 7 billion dollars on the illegal substance, averaging about a billion dollars a year (Prislac, 2009). This means that annually there is a billion dollars out there that is subject to no sales tax. The national average for sales tax is 5%, so if you calculate the billion dollars being spent on marijuana, this means there is approximately 50 million dollars in sales tax that our government never gets

I Know That Sounds Like Digital Media And Advertising I know that sounds like Digital Media has no center but of course that s not true: there are rules (color, placement, context, intent, etc.), and as always, if you know the rules you can either follow them or break them. Do either of them well and you ll succeed. There are some concrete aesthetic guidelines you can follow to ensure your imagery will please the eye. So let s talk about 3 of the major compositional aesthetic theories, and how they function in Digital Media and advertising: 1. The Rule of Thirds The Rule of Thirds basically says that if you divide any screen (television/movie/computer/smartphone) into a grid of equal thirds, the eye is naturally attracted to the 4 points on the grid where those lines intersect (this rectangle is commonly referred to as The Golden Section). Look familiar? It should: if you ve ever turned on the Grid function on your iPhone camera, then you ve been using The Rule of Thirds for years. So, try using this grid when choosing an image (most photo editing software programs have something like it, and you can turn them on and off for easy A/B comparison), and see where those 4 points land. What do you want people to focus on? And is it near one of those points? If not, you can either crop the image differently or choose another, but the important thing to think about is how you want your audience to respond to your imagery and how you want their eye to travel. The Golden Section can be like a bulls eye for their focus you can always

The words thinking and type of thinking are closely related to psychological studies. However, patterns of thought are relevant to cultural studies. Lian (2002) states that thought pattern is essentially a cultural concept implicating the way of one s thinking which is mainly in influenced by his or her cultural background. According to Kaplan(1996),Chinese thought patterns is the peculiar thought pattern which is considered as spiraling. The importance of the Iliad is that it shows us what the early Greeks were like which is critical to us the descendants intellectually, and in our politics and art. 2. The Greek miracle is the awakening of Greece which with the disappearance of old things created a whole new way to look at the world. 3. Compared to the Egyptians, the Greeks were more relaxed and casual evident in their portrayal of the gods. The Greeks made their gods look human which had never been done before and they felt at home with them, fearing them yet still at ease knowing all about what they did and even laughing at them. This is much more relaxed than the Egyptians as they didn t make their gods human nor did they dare laugh in their presence. 4. Over time Zeus went from the most powerful god, to a deity that has a moral code that was enforced upon others but not himself, punisher of those that violate it, to punisher of those that did wrong and friend of justice. In general Zeus went from a dictator like state to a more mature and just form of ruler. 5. Teen pregnancy rates have increased dramatically with almost 10% of teens between fifteen to nineteen getting pregnant at the peak in 1957. First of all, while he was Justice Minister, he reformed laws in the Criminal Code for divorce, and liberalized homosexuality and abortion. This essentially allowed homosexuals and other people to have more freedoms in Canadian society. Moreover, the Official Languages Act made French Canadians feel as if they were finally a part of Canada. This was because their language was widely available, and Trudeau catered to them by making French an official Canadian Language. Furthermore, the October Crisis proved to Canadian citizens that Trudeau was a smart and strong leader. This was due to the fact that Trudeau was able to defuse the situation without having more lives being lost. Also, he successfully stopped the Quebec separatist movement, which would have been catastrophic to the rest of Canada. Likewise, the Charter of Rights and Freedoms gave Canadians guaranteed individual freedoms for the first time. It also enabled women and Aboriginals in Canada to finally feel treated as equal people. The purpose of this paper is not to persuade but to explore and expose some ideas on a recurrent social issue. The first theory to be discussed is symbolic interactionism, which can be related to the term illegal immigration and some of the other words that derive from this. The main idea covered and supported by this theory, is the fact that communication is based on the exchange of symbols. In a sense language, words etc. are symbols, and the terminology given to the current social problem contributes to the creation of perceptions that people have. For instance, when an average American thinks of the word illegal immigrant the first thing that comes to mind is a brown/Hispanic immigrant, most likely a

I personally feel that the quality of an education leads to the quantity of an education. We must first, start small and expand people s minds in meaningful ways. Students should be able to get one on one interaction with their teachers and be able to receive an overall good education in a developed and underdeveloped country. According to Mark Smith (2008), who wrote an article on incorporating globalization into education, in the process we have almost forgotten that education ever had any purpose other than to promote growth. Children receiving an education is a major plus, but what matters is the quality of education in which the child receives. The amount of schooling a child obtains does not play a key role in how intelligent the child is, but the quality of education allows children to dive deeper into thinking, therefore there intelligence can be measured. But the quantity of schooling is a very crude measure of peopleВґs knowledge and cognitive skills. A local definition of giftedness allows for policy making to occur on home turf, where best practices catering to specific groups of gifted students can be utilized and the scope of the definition is able to be more succinct in targeting certain student needs. As the National Association for Gifted Children (NAGC) states, the goal of a definition of giftedness is to provide the framework for gifted education programs and services, and guide key decisions such as which students will qualify for services, the areas of giftedness to be address with programming, when the services will be offered, and even why they will be offered (NAGC Def). Districts have the advantage of knowing their students, populations, and communities. There are, however, some downsides in allowing localities to write their own definition of giftedness and the ramifications of what follows. First, the school district must have qualified administrators and educators creating the policies. • 42. Political Correctness Essay Political Correctness Political correctness is a political ideology, nothing more. I believe political correctness is a political ideology and it cannot be correct unless it is linked to genuine transformation. First, I will examine the origins of political correctness to try to get a clear understanding of what this movement is. Second, I will show you that political correctness is political and how it became a political ideology. Lastly, I shall discuss why this ideology does not work. Political correctness is cultural Marxism. Marx, as cited in Introduction to Social Science course guide, believed that if people were left to work on their own they would be more efficient. He had an ideological belief that laborers could actually want ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Some members moved into government such as Herbert Marcuse who was the predecessor to the CIA and other members move into Hollywood. These beginnings of political correctness would mean very little to us today if it weren t for the student rebellions in the mid 1960 s .The students as Lind notes read the book that Marcuse writes, Eros and Civilization . The students do not have to read lots of heavy Marxism and Marcuse tells them everything they want to hear. Such as, Do your own thing , If it feels good do it and you never have to go to work . Marcuse was also the man who created the phrase make love not war . Political correctness arrived at American Universities. Therefore, political correctness s true origins have been forgotten and so people have forgotten what political correctness really is. Terms such as politically correct thus have a hidden history, uncovering which is dependent both on the accurate recollection of those who were there, (Cameron, 1995,78). Now we know where political correctness originated but in order to understand political correctness as a political ideology we have to first look at what politics is and second what an ideology is. Politics is about the distribution of power. In the Introduction to Social Science course guide it is stated that, politics can be anywhere . Therefore, politics is in the language we speak. Power is the ability to
  • 43. Comparison s The Trolley Problem By Judith Jarvis Thomson The article, The Trolley Problem , written by Judith Jarvis Thomson, poses an intense ethical argument. Within the reading, she addresses two of Philippa Foot s imaginary situations. The first involves a trolley with faulty brakes, and if the driver should flip the switch to kill five people or just one person. The second is a similar situation; should a doctor let five patients die or operate on one patient to take his organs without consent? I will argue that it is not morally permissible to turn the trolley or to operate without consent. This article starts with an interesting scenario. A trolley is speeding down its tracks. As the trolley is coming around a turn, the driver sees five men working on the tracks. Luckily, the driver of the trolley has the option to flip a switch to make the trolley turn to the right onto a separate section of the tracks. It is not that simple, though. On the right spur of the tracks, one man is working. Philippa Foothas arranged that no matter which way the driver turns, it would be impossible for the workmen to get off the track safely and on time to avoid being run down by the trolley (Thomson 1395). As a first instinct, the driver tries to slam on the trolley s brakes to avoid hitting any of the workmen. Unfortunately, the brakes on the trolley do not work. Thus, the driver is left facing this situation: should he continue going straight or should he quickly turn the trolley to the right? If he stays straight, he will continue hurdling towards the five helpless workmen, inevitably hitting and killing all five of them. If he flips to switch to turn the trolley right, the driver will undoubtedly hit the lone workman and take his life (Thomson 1395). Now here is the real catch of the situation: the reader is the trolley driver. It is up to the reader of this article to decide what route to take. Would the reader, in the driver s situation, keep the trolley straight, or turn it to the right? Thomson explains that when she gave such a hypothetical case to several people, the consensus was overwhelmingly harmonious. Many readers believed that it was morally permissible for you to turn the trolley (Thomson 1395). Some say that it is completely necessary to turn the
