Unit 11 Task 3
Analysis of Sports Performance
P5
Unit 11 - Task 3 - P5
Explain the purpose and resources
required for analysing different levels
of sporting performance.
Talent ID
Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of purpose (‘why’ and ‘how’)
Elite Talent ID is one of the purposes of sports performance. At the
elite level Talent ID is used to identify potential in athletes who
can be trained to quickly develop into Olympic medallists in a
few years’ time. This benefits the individual athlete and team
performance by giving them a chance to be successful and
they receive high quality coaches and facilities to further
progress them to Olympic standards. An example of this is tall
and talented where athletes over 175cm are fitness tested to
see if they had potential in basketball, rowing or handball.
Participation At participation level Talent ID is used to identify people who
could potentially play at county levels and then progress even
further in their sport, this will help the individual have a
chance to develop by getting a higher quality coach and access
to better facilities and equipment. For example football scouts
attend college and Sunday league matches to identify players
that could potentially join their club.
Monitoring current fitness levels
Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of purpose (‘why’ and ‘how’)
Elite Monitoring current fitness levels is one of the purposes of
sports performance. At elite level monitoring current fitness
levels can be done by carrying out a set of fitness tests in a lab
such as sprint tests and VO2 max tests, this is used to analyse
the player’s level of fitness and see if they are progressing.
This benefits the individuals/team because it means they
know what level they are working at and they know if they are
progressing, this can be used as motivation to continue
improving their fitness which will improve their overall team
performance.
Participation At participation level monitoring currently fitness tests such as
a cooper run can be used to monitor fitness levels and
progress. This will benefit the individual because it shows
them what level they are working at and how well they are
improving, they can use improvement of fitness level as
motivation to continue improving and play better.
Identifying strengths and areas for
improvement
Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of purpose (‘why’ and ‘how’)
Elite Identification of strengths and areas for improvement is a
purpose of sports performance. At elite level identifying
strengths and areas for improvement will be done by many
fitness and skill tests which will give in depth detail about what
the athlete’s strengths are but also what they need to
improve. This benefits the athlete because it means they can
change their training programmes to improve the specific key
areas they are worse at.
Participation At participation level identifying strengths and weaknesses will
be done by basics tests by a coach or videoing a game,
identifying strengths and improvement areas will help the
coach focus training sessions on what they need to improve
and the coach can use the players strength to maintain
motivation levels.

Recovery after injury
Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of purpose (‘why’ and ‘how’)
Elite Recovery after injury is one of the purposes of sports
performance. At the elite level recovery after injury will be
faster because they have facilities to help improve recovery
speed, they also have access to physiotherapists and scans are
evaluations are carried out throughout the process. This
benefits the athlete because they will have a full, speedy
recovery and specialist advice on how to prevent the injury
from reoccurring. An example of this is being able to see
specialists and physiotherapists as soon as the injury occurs, as
many teams have these specialists pitch side.
Participation At participation level recovery after injury may take longer as
the athlete will have to go through the NHS, having the
appropriate scans and being referred to a specialist takes a
long time and in this time the injury may become worse, once
they have been referred the benefits are seen as they are
given time and appropriate exercises to improve recovery and
help getting back into the sport.

Human
Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of resources (‘why’ and ‘what’)
Elite Human is one of the resources of sports performance. At the
elite level Humans are used to ensure that athlete’s are
progressing and are healthy. Humans at elite level are highly
skilled and qualified in specific sport areas. This benefits the
individual and team performance because they are given
feedback to improve their ability. An example of this is coaches
at elite level will be fully qualified and be experienced.
Participation At participation level human resources are used to make sure
all types of people get involved with sport and provide the
public with the opportunity to take part in any sport, human
resources at participation level are less likely to have a high
skill level. This benefits individuals because it will give them
opportunity to participate and progress in any sport and
inexperienced athletes are able to get advice.
Facilities
Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of resources (‘why’ and ‘what’)
Elite Facilities are another one of the resources of sports
performance. At the elite level they have high quality facilities
that can be used to attain accurate tests results of athletes
using reliable equipment which is expensive. This benefits the
individual and team performance as it provides coaches with
information that can help the athletes performance progress.
An example of this is flood lit grounds, 3G pitches and high
quality gyms.
Participation At the participation level the facilities are of lower quality and
are used to conduct tests using common equipment and
notational analysis. This benefits the performer because it can
give an overall view of what needs improving to help them
progress into the performance level. Athletes in this level may
not have access to 3G pitches or high quality gyms due to the
expense and therefore could end up using concrete surfaces or
poor quality grass pitches.
Time
Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of resources (‘why’ and ‘what’)
Elite Time is one of the resources of a sports performance. At elite
level athletes have plenty of time to progress themselves so
they can evaluate their performance and training programmes
in detail, becoming an elite means that the athlete/team
needs a lot of time in their schedules to fulfil the training
schedules. This is a benefit to the athlete because making sure
they have this time to analyse and train means they have a
better chance of succeeding and progressing and if they only
have a small amount of time evaluation of training and
performances may be inaccurate.
Participation At participation level time is hard because the athlete/teams
normally participate around work and education, therefore
the training programmes are limited and they usually only
train once or twice a week, having a limited time means the
athletes have less time to progress themselves and if they
wish to progress they must put in extra effort in their leisure
time.
Equipment
Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of resources (‘why’ and ‘what’)
Elite Equipment is one of the resources of sports performance. At
the elite level high quality equipment is used to help fitness
test athletes and also used during training sessions or for
recovery. Equipment elite performers help the athletes get the
full benefits of training and to get accurate test results. This
benefits the individual and team performance because it
allows them to enhance their training sessions and overall
performance. An example of this is in laboratories where tests
such as VO2 max take place, this requires a treadmill and other
specialist equipment.
Participation At participation level equipment used is of a lower quality, it
can be used for testing and training but because it’s a lower
quality the results may be general and inaccurate. This
benefits the athlete because it helps develop fundamental
skills which will help them in their sports. For example using
cones and poles can be used to create and complete drills for
athletes to complete.
Financial
Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of resources (‘why’ and ‘what’)
Elite Financial is another one of the resources of sports
performance. At the elite level the performers are able to
afford high quality equipment, facilities, coaches and
physiotherapists, having access to these things benefits the
performers as it allows them to maintain fitness, have
structured sessions, progress to the best they can be and have
quick recovery times. These facilities can be funded by NGBs.
Participation At the participation level athletes don’t have access to high
level facilities and equipment as they don’t have much funding
from local authorities, during recovery they go through the
NHS which takes longer and recover time is slow. Coaches
have lower qualification levels and therefore training may not
push the athlete to their max and they may never reach full
potential.
Scientific support and equipment
Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of resources (‘why’ and ‘what’)
Elite Scientific support and equipment is one of the resources of
sports performance. At the elite level scientific support and
equipment is used to analyse athletes which will benefit them
by being able to focus on specific areas in training, and you can
use this analysis to create ways to develop plans to help
improve the athlete’s performance. For example a bioelectrical
impedance monitor can be used to measure an athlete’s mass,
BMI and body composition. This benefits the individual and
team performance as it allows them to analyse areas of
themselves and then improve the weaker areas.
Participation At participation level scientific support and equipment is hard
to attain for this level of sport, so they are unable to use this
therefore the support doesn't come as a benefit to them, for
example, the equipment used it very expensive and need a
skilled and trained person to be able to use the machinery
therefore it isn’t available for this level.
Safety
Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of resources (‘why’ and ‘what’)
Elite Safety is another one of the resources of sports performance.
At the elite level the performers have access to top
physiotherapists which can give detailed sessions to reduce
risk of injury and speed up recovery. Risk assessments are also
carried out by professionals on equipment and facilities before
each session or game to reduce the risk of injury. This benefits
the athlete as it means they are able to train and play with
minimised risks.
Participation At the participation level the only ‘risk assessment’ that takes
place tends to be a pitch inspection before a game usually by
the referee to ensure its safe to play on. In terms of injury the
athlete must go through the NHS which takes longer so during
this time the injury may become worse which means the
player will be out of the game for much longer.

Participation At the participation level the facilities are of lower quality and are used to conduct tests using common equipment and notational analysis. This benefits the performer because it can give an overall view of what needs improving to help them progress into the performance level. Athletes in this level may not have access to 3G pitches or high quality gyms due to the expense and therefore could end up using concrete surfaces or poor quality grass pitches.
  • 13. Time Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of resources (‘why’ and ‘what’) Elite Time is one of the resources of a sports performance. At elite level athletes have plenty of time to progress themselves so they can evaluate their performance and training programmes in detail, becoming an elite means that the athlete/team needs a lot of time in their schedules to fulfil the training schedules. This is a benefit to the athlete because making sure they have this time to analyse and train means they have a better chance of succeeding and progressing and if they only have a small amount of time evaluation of training and performances may be inaccurate. Participation At participation level time is hard because the athlete/teams normally participate around work and education, therefore the training programmes are limited and they usually only train once or twice a week, having a limited time means the athletes have less time to progress themselves and if they wish to progress they must put in extra effort in their leisure time.
  • 14. Equipment Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of resources (‘why’ and ‘what’) Elite Equipment is one of the resources of sports performance. At the elite level high quality equipment is used to help fitness test athletes and also used during training sessions or for recovery. Equipment elite performers help the athletes get the full benefits of training and to get accurate test results. This benefits the individual and team performance because it allows them to enhance their training sessions and overall performance. An example of this is in laboratories where tests such as VO2 max take place, this requires a treadmill and other specialist equipment. Participation At participation level equipment used is of a lower quality, it can be used for testing and training but because it’s a lower quality the results may be general and inaccurate. This benefits the athlete because it helps develop fundamental skills which will help them in their sports. For example using cones and poles can be used to create and complete drills for athletes to complete.
  • 15. Financial Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of resources (‘why’ and ‘what’) Elite Financial is another one of the resources of sports performance. At the elite level the performers are able to afford high quality equipment, facilities, coaches and physiotherapists, having access to these things benefits the performers as it allows them to maintain fitness, have structured sessions, progress to the best they can be and have quick recovery times. These facilities can be funded by NGBs. Participation At the participation level athletes don’t have access to high level facilities and equipment as they don’t have much funding from local authorities, during recovery they go through the NHS which takes longer and recover time is slow. Coaches have lower qualification levels and therefore training may not push the athlete to their max and they may never reach full potential.
  • 16. Scientific support and equipment Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of resources (‘why’ and ‘what’) Elite Scientific support and equipment is one of the resources of sports performance. At the elite level scientific support and equipment is used to analyse athletes which will benefit them by being able to focus on specific areas in training, and you can use this analysis to create ways to develop plans to help improve the athlete’s performance. For example a bioelectrical impedance monitor can be used to measure an athlete’s mass, BMI and body composition. This benefits the individual and team performance as it allows them to analyse areas of themselves and then improve the weaker areas. Participation At participation level scientific support and equipment is hard to attain for this level of sport, so they are unable to use this therefore the support doesn't come as a benefit to them, for example, the equipment used it very expensive and need a skilled and trained person to be able to use the machinery therefore it isn’t available for this level.
  • 17. Safety Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of resources (‘why’ and ‘what’) Elite Safety is another one of the resources of sports performance. At the elite level the performers have access to top physiotherapists which can give detailed sessions to reduce risk of injury and speed up recovery. Risk assessments are also carried out by professionals on equipment and facilities before each session or game to reduce the risk of injury. This benefits the athlete as it means they are able to train and play with minimised risks. Participation At the participation level the only ‘risk assessment’ that takes place tends to be a pitch inspection before a game usually by the referee to ensure its safe to play on. In terms of injury the athlete must go through the NHS which takes longer so during this time the injury may become worse which means the player will be out of the game for much longer.
