Unit 11 Task 3
Analysis of Sports Performance
P5 Criteria Only
Unit 11 - Task 3 - P5
Explain the purpose and resources
required for analysing different levels
of sporting performance.
Pages 22-26 of the Electronic Text
Book will be very useful.
Task Context
• You are creating a resource for future coaches based
on your experiences in Unit 11 tasks 1 and 2.
• You need to choose two of the performer levels below
for you whole task to be based on.
– Foundation
– Participation
– Performance
– Elite
• You do not need to complete a comparison just explain
in detail each of the following factors.
• This resource should be able to support future coaches
start the work you have completed so far.
Talent ID
Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of purpose (‘why’ and ‘how’)
Participation Talent identification for a participation performer
would be to watch their performance that is given. The
purpose is that they can find people that are talented
and could progress to a higher level.
Elite Talent identification at a elite level would be looking for
the best players in opponents teams to man mark or try
and make them not play to the best of their ability.
Monitoring current fitness levels
Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of purpose (‘why’ and ‘how’)
Participation Fitness testing at participation level will be used to look
at how fit the squad of players is. They would do tests
like the cooper run as it is simple and isn't expensive.
Elite At elite level fitness testing would be carried out with
expensive equipment to see how fit they are. Things
like V02 tests may be run to see how well the players
can utilise oxygen.
Identifying strengths and areas for
improvement
Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of purpose (‘why’ and ‘how’)
Participation In the participation level managers and coaches would
visually watch players and give them verbal feedback
on what they need to improve and also tell them what
their strengths are.
Elite In the elite level players have every stat recorded by
sport companies during matches, so after games they
know exactly how many touches they had, completed
passes and pretty much any stat they wanted to get
their hands on. Coaches would record them during
training and matches and they would also have video
analysis sessions where they work on targets for
improvement form the players.
Performance assessment
Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of purpose (‘why’ and ‘how’)
Participation At the participation level you can review a players
performance by watching them and can determine
how well they are playing by recording things like
tackles, touches, shots, goals.
Elite At an elite level all players on the pitch our assessed by
technology and things like cameras and sensors are
placed around the pitch to calculate touches, shots
goals etc.
Recovery after injury
Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of purpose (‘why’ and ‘how’)
Participation In the participation level players would have to use the
NHS to have operations on injuries which take up a lot
of time as they are dealing with the general public too.
So recovery time takes longer then in turn they aren't
able to play for longer. Also the chance of the injury
recurring is highly likely.
Elite In the elite level players will be seen by private
institutes and could have a knee operation hours after
the injury then have all the best physios helping them
get back playing with a few weeks. This is because they
have the resources and money to do so.
Assessment of health status
Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of purpose (‘why’ and ‘how’)
Participation In the participation level health status would be given
to players from their GP or doctor. This is because don’t
have funds to have health checks on their players at
this level.
Elite In the elite level of performance will be told to players
by a club doctor who would be highly qualified and
they will most likely have weekly/monthly check ups.
Squad selection
Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of purpose (‘why’ and ‘how’)
Participation In the participation performance level squad selection
will be decided by what players turn up on the day. As
small squad sizes and players making effort to turn up
depends on this.
Elite Squad selection In the elite performance area would be
down to many things such as, fitness, form and
opponents they are playing against.
Goal setting
Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of purpose (‘why’ and ‘how’)
Participation Participation level goal setting wouldn’t be very
specific and might not even be player based, the whole
team may have a target of winning the league or
beating certain teams.
Elite In the elite level goals setting would be player based
and each player would have goals to achieve which are
achievable, specific, measureable, realistic and they will
have a certain amount of time to achieve the goal.
Human
Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of resources (‘why’ and ‘what’)
Participation At participation level the human resources are normally
voluntary so for example dads are normally the
coaches. It normally relies on family and friends to
support at matches.
Elite The human resources at elite level would include
skilled and qualified coaches to observe and analyse
training and games.
Facilities
Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of resources (‘why’ and ‘what’)
Participation Its is unlikely for science laboratory's to be available for
the participation level, but equipment like rowing
machines treadmills are available in gyms and public
parks to be used. Basic equipment like stopwatches can
be used by coaches to measure their performance.
Elite Facilities used for elite level performers would be high
end science laboratories. For example the ISEH
(institute of sport and exercise science). They have
equipment specific to each sport to help athletes to
recover for example.
Time
Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of resources (‘why’ and ‘what’)
Participation Time is one of the biggest issues with participation
level athletes as things like work, education and family
take up time so less time to train in their sport.
Elite Elite performance athlete's wouldn’t need to worry
about this as most will be getting paid to do the sport
they play.
Equipment
Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of resources (‘why’ and ‘what’)
Participation Only basic equipment is available to players at the
participation level, so things like stopwatches and
cones would be available.
Elite Elite performers would have a wide range of
equipment available as more money is spent on elite
performers. Things like testing equipment for fitness
levels and other expensive tests are avaviable.
Financial
Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of resources (‘why’ and ‘what’)
Participation At the participation level athlete's will have to fund
themselves so things like kit and gyms will have to self
paid for.
Elite At the elite level everything will be paid for by either
sponsors or the club so elite players don’t have to
spend any of their own money.
Scientific support and equipment
Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of resources (‘why’ and ‘what’)
Participation At participation performance level non of the
equipment will be available to them because of the
cost so everything is a lot simpler.
Elite At the elite level all funding will be paid for by the club
so the players don’t have to worry about not having
any of the scientific sport to help them.
Safety
Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of resources (‘why’ and ‘what’)
Participation In participation level safety will be important but its not
as safe guarded as the elite level. For example in
participation football a quick check of the studs is a
precaution before a match.
Elite At the elite level clubs make sure all their players are as
safe as possible because they have a responsibility to
keep every player in the club safe.
