Analysis of Sports Performance
P5 Criteria Only
Unit 11 - Task 3 - P5
Explain the purpose and resources
required for analysing different levels
of sporting performance.
Pages 22-26 of the Electronic Text
Book will be very useful.
Task Context
• You are creating a resource for future coaches based
on your experiences in Unit 11 tasks 1 and 2.
• You need to choose two of the performer levels below
for you whole task to be based on.
– Foundation
– Participation
– Performance
– Elite
• You do not need to complete a comparison just explain
in detail each of the following factors.
• This resource should be able to support future coaches
start the work you have completed so far.
Talent ID is one of the purposes of sports
performance
Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of purpose (‘why’ and ‘how’)
Elite Talent ID is used to help identify potential in athletes who can be
trained to become medalist in olympic sports. This will benefit the
elite performer by giving them an opportunity to be successful with
high levels of coaching. For example, There are talent ID scouts
such as tall and talented who look for athletes above 175 cm tall
who could have potential in basketball, handball or rowing. Talent
ID for elite is done by many physical, physiological and skill
attribute tests.
Participation Talent ID is used to help identify people who has the potential to
play for high ability levels than club level for example county levels
in their chosen sports. At participation level athletes are scouted by
talent scouts who will watch games and also hold open and closed
trials to help find talent.
Monitoring current fitness levels
Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of purpose (‘why’ and ‘how’)
Elite Monitoring current fitness levels is one of the purposes of sports performance. At
elite level is used to make sure the athlete is able to meet the demands of the
sports. this benefits the individuals/team by making sure the athlete/s are at their
optimum fitness levels. being an elite performer means they have high technology
and the time to be able to monitor fitness levels on a weekly basis. For example for
an elite long distance runner, their Vo2 max and aerobic endurance may be tested
on a weekly basis, this is apart of their training programmes.
Participation Monitoring is one of the purposes of sports performance, at participation level is
used to determine fitness levels of athletes. this benefits the individuals/team by
showing them at what levels of fitness they are involving lots of tests, at
participation level these tests would consist of basic tests such as 12 minute cooper
runs, sit and reach tests and possible sprint tests. these results will help adapt
training schedules and programmes for the athlete.
Identifying strengths and areas for improvement is a
purpose of sports performance
Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of purpose (‘why’ and ‘how’)
Elite Identifying strengths and areas for improvement will help the elite
athletes because it will help develop a training programme focusing
on areas which need to be improved upon, for example if it has
been identified their speed is a weakness and a football midfield this
will be incorporated into the training programmes. this is done by
taking many physical and physiological fitness tests by high
technological equipment, giving detailed analysis of strengths and
weaknesses.
Participation Identifying strengths and areas for improvement at participation
level will involve analysis of the performance for example
observation to identify where the athlete is strong is certain aspects
and weak in others. This will be done by observation and
questionnaires which are available for participation level athletes.
Performance assessment
Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of purpose (‘why’ and ‘how’)
Elite Performance assessment is one of the purposes of sports performance. At elite level
is used to see whether players have a good selective attention or get distracted
easily and too see where the athletes strengths are to help develop tactics in the
future. this benefits the individuals/team by showing weakness areas which can be
developed upon. at elite level this can be done using video analysis where the
performer and coach will sit down and review the athlete in their specific sport and
pointing out what would of been done when bad decisions are made. for example
watching back a rugby game and the coach pointing out what move the athlete
should of completed or space which was open . also after a game the rugby play will
be able to get stats on their performances including tackles made and distances
covered.
Participation Performance assessment is one of the purposes of sports performance. At
participation level it is used to identify weaknesses in a team and to see if players
are focused on the sporting task . at participation level this can be done by
observation on the coach, where the coach will feedback to the athlete of what can
be done. because lack of equipment the athlete will receive feedback on the coach
therefore the comments are more subjective to coaches opinion but assessment will
be completed by the coaches and others around the athlete. for example in a rugby
game an overall assessment will be feedback on how the performer did overall.
Recovery after injury
Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of purpose (‘why’ and ‘how’)
Elite Recovery after injury for an elite performer will be a fast process
because having facilities which will aid recovery and having tests on
regular basis to get detailed analysis of the injury and its
progression back to recovery. This benefits the athlete because they
will have full details on when they are able to get back to training
and will be seen by high quality specialists. For example elite
football clubs, in the premier league, they have high level
physiotherapists will mean recovery happens quicker and recovery
will less likely happen again as there is high control over the
training the athlete is able to do.
Participation Recovery after injury for an elite performer is a slower process
because of not having specialist physiotherapists and doctors at
their club teams, if an injury happens the athlete will have to go to
doctors and find a separate physiotherapist which will not has a lot
of control over how the athlete aids their own healing process due
to participation level having other commitments such as work and
education.
Assessment of health status
Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of purpose (‘why’ and ‘how’)
Elite Assessment of health status is to make sure the athlete is healthy, this benefits the
performer to make sure they are free from disease, injury and illness, an elite
performer does this by having a medical assessment before becoming an elite
performer and before major competitions to make sure if is okay for them to
participate and to train. for example if a footballer transfers clubs they will take a
medical to make sure they are healthy.
Participation Assessment of health status for a participation level is done by
athletes completing a PAR-Q when starting the sporting event
showing that they have no health issues and that doctors are okay
with them taking part in exercise. On a yearly basis health status
will be updated making sure that the athlete isn't at harm.
Squad selection
Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of purpose (‘why’ and ‘how’)
Elite Squad selection is one of the resources of sports performance. At
elite level squad selection is based upon who has performed well
and test results showing that the athlete has high fitness test
results. this benefits the individuals/team because selection is
based upon who has worked hard in training to improve their
abilities and who is at the top of their game For example if 2
footballers are going for same position on the pitch in midfield if
ones aerobic endurance is better than another they will be more
likely to be chosen.
Participation Squad selection is one of the resources of sports performance. At
participation level squad selection will be based upon ability levels
involving fitness tests but will also have been influenced by
commitment to training sessions. This benefits the athletes because
through commitment they will get games played and therefore have
more chances to improve. Squad selection will also help an athlete
realise if they have under performed if being dropped but benefits
them because they will be motivated to succeed and achieve
higher. for example a football team with a large squad means
selection is harder and analysis of performances with help with
selection
Goal setting
Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of purpose (‘why’ and ‘how’)
Elite Goal setting is one of the purposes of sports performance. At elite level is used to
help motivate athletes to achieve higher goals with set time periods. This benefits
the individuals/team because they have something to aim towards which will
improve their performances. For example an elite sprinters long term goal may be to
place in the top 6 at a major event i.e. the Olympics.
Participation Goal setting is one of the purposes of sports performance. At participation level goal
setting is used to get improvements within the athletes ability. The targets will also
help show progression in the athlete. This benefits the individuals/team by giving
them motivation to get better and a time frame to word towards . An example of a
goal for a participation level is for a rugby player to improve a 5 minute run by 100
meters within 4 weeks.
Human
Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of resources (‘why’ and ‘what’)
Elite At elite levels to make sure the athlete is progressing and healthy,
at elite level human resources are highly skilled and qualified in
sporting areas this includes high level coaches. Human resources
are also used when doing tests so the results are reliable and
accurate. This benefit the performer because it'll help provide them
with specific training programmes.
Participation At participation level human resources are used to make sure
people get involved and have the opportunity to take part and to
develop their sporting abilities. At participation level will not be of a
high skilled level and may have only low qualifications. The benefits
to the athletes because it gives them an opportunity to progress in
sport.
Facilities
Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of resources (‘why’ and ‘what’)
Elite At elite level facilities are used to help get highly accurate results,
facilities which this is done in places such as laboratory facilities but
also the training facilities which they can access. This benefits
performers because the facilities give them the best chances to
improve their abilities and laboratories to get the best tests results.
Participation At participation level facilities used will not be at a high quality level
and may involve being apart of leisure centres and public grounds.
For the athlete using public grounds means that it doesn't cost
them any extra get to the facilities and it is likely to be local
grounds so they will be able to access easily and means they can
train when they are available.
Time
Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of resources (‘why’ and ‘what’)
Elite at elite level athletes need have plenty of time to help progress
themselves by being able to evaluate their performances and
training programmes in depth, also with the amounts of training
needed to become elite means that the athlete/team must have a
lot of time in their schedules to fulfil the training programmes. this
is a benefit to the athlete because making sure they have this time
to analyse and train means they have a better chance of
progressing and if time not given up evaluation of training and
performances may be inaccurate.
Participation At participation level training time is hard because the
athlete/teams normally have work and also education to go
alongside sports, therefore they're training programmes are
arranged around others schedules and having training in the
evenings. by not having time to be able to train and to analyse their
performances each week and possibly only having 1/2 training
sessions a week means analysing may not have in-depth detail and
meaning training programmes which are adapted around
programmes may not be as accurate.
Equipment
Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of resources (‘why’ and ‘what’)
Elite At elite level equipment is used to help fitness test athletes and
help throughout training sessions, equipment at elite levels are of
high quality which helps benefit the athletes training and can be
used to help fitness testing. This benefits the performer having big
technology equipment means test results are more reliable because
of given in depth results. For example at elite levels technological
equipment such as VO2 Max equipment to get detailed readings.
Participation At participation level equipment used is of a lower standard, which
can also have many purposes such as testing and training. This
benefits the athlete of participation level because it helps develop
fundamental skills and drills which will help them in their sports and
sporting performances. For example using cones to create drills for
athletes to complete.
Financial
Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of resources (‘why’ and ‘what’)
Elite Financial is one of the resources of sports performance. At elite level financial is
used to develop new training facilities/equipment for the athletes to train and also
be tested with .This benefits the individuals/team by development of technology will
aid the training processes and also to help development into research which can
help athletes train at the highest levels . Financial for elite clubs can be done from
ticket sales within stadiums and winning leagues for example the premier league
clubs are able to get money to help developments and investing in the club from
tickets to games and also depending on their rankings in the league.
Participation At participation level financial is harder to come across due to not
much money being invested. If needing money for equipment and
facilities this may be done my fundraising and hoping for
sponsorships to help develop the club. For example a local athletics
team to train at a stadium may have to rent out space to train
therefore need the money.
Scientific support and equipment
Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of resources (‘why’ and ‘what’)
Elite Scientific support and equipment is one of the resources of sports
performance. At the elite level financial scientific support and
equipment is used to help analyse athletes with the best facilities
which will benefit them by being able to focus on specific areas in
training and create ways to develop plans to improve the athletes
performance. An example of this is new developments of
equipments and dietary needs for specific sports.
Participation At participation level scientific support and equipment is hard to
get for this level of sport and so they aren't able to use this facility
therefore the scientific support doesn't come as a benefit to them,
for example, the equipment used it very expensive and need a
skilled and trained person to be able to use the machinery.
Safety
Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of resources (‘why’ and ‘what’)
Elite Safety is one of the resources of sports performance. At elite level the athletes are
protected in games and meets being plenty of security around the athletes
protecting them for getting hurt. Athletes are also protected by playing in safe
grounds which have lots of safety precautions on game days. For example rugby
games will have plenty of stewards, guards and constant CCTV monitoring making
sure no one is at risk.
Participation Safety checks will be completed before game to make sure the
grounds are safe to play on. There is less control over others
protecting the athletes. Risks assessment will also be completed
with coaches records being checked. also safety of equipment used
in both games and training for example both rugby and football
boots are check to make sure studs are regulation size

Analyzing Sports Performance

  • 1. Unit 11 Task 3 Analysis of Sports Performance P5 Criteria Only
  • 2. Unit 11 - Task 3 - P5 Explain the purpose and resources required for analysing different levels of sporting performance. Pages 22-26 of the Electronic Text Book will be very useful.
  • 3. Task Context • You are creating a resource for future coaches based on your experiences in Unit 11 tasks 1 and 2. • You need to choose two of the performer levels below for you whole task to be based on. – Foundation – Participation – Performance – Elite • You do not need to complete a comparison just explain in detail each of the following factors. • This resource should be able to support future coaches start the work you have completed so far.
  • 4. Talent ID is one of the purposes of sports performance Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of purpose (‘why’ and ‘how’) Elite Talent ID is used to help identify potential in athletes who can be trained to become medalist in olympic sports. This will benefit the elite performer by giving them an opportunity to be successful with high levels of coaching. For example, There are talent ID scouts such as tall and talented who look for athletes above 175 cm tall who could have potential in basketball, handball or rowing. Talent ID for elite is done by many physical, physiological and skill attribute tests. Participation Talent ID is used to help identify people who has the potential to play for high ability levels than club level for example county levels in their chosen sports. At participation level athletes are scouted by talent scouts who will watch games and also hold open and closed trials to help find talent.
  • 5. Monitoring current fitness levels Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of purpose (‘why’ and ‘how’) Elite Monitoring current fitness levels is one of the purposes of sports performance. At elite level is used to make sure the athlete is able to meet the demands of the sports. this benefits the individuals/team by making sure the athlete/s are at their optimum fitness levels. being an elite performer means they have high technology and the time to be able to monitor fitness levels on a weekly basis. For example for an elite long distance runner, their Vo2 max and aerobic endurance may be tested on a weekly basis, this is apart of their training programmes. Participation Monitoring is one of the purposes of sports performance, at participation level is used to determine fitness levels of athletes. this benefits the individuals/team by showing them at what levels of fitness they are involving lots of tests, at participation level these tests would consist of basic tests such as 12 minute cooper runs, sit and reach tests and possible sprint tests. these results will help adapt training schedules and programmes for the athlete.
  • 6. Identifying strengths and areas for improvement is a purpose of sports performance Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of purpose (‘why’ and ‘how’) Elite Identifying strengths and areas for improvement will help the elite athletes because it will help develop a training programme focusing on areas which need to be improved upon, for example if it has been identified their speed is a weakness and a football midfield this will be incorporated into the training programmes. this is done by taking many physical and physiological fitness tests by high technological equipment, giving detailed analysis of strengths and weaknesses. Participation Identifying strengths and areas for improvement at participation level will involve analysis of the performance for example observation to identify where the athlete is strong is certain aspects and weak in others. This will be done by observation and questionnaires which are available for participation level athletes.
  • 7. Performance assessment Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of purpose (‘why’ and ‘how’) Elite Performance assessment is one of the purposes of sports performance. At elite level is used to see whether players have a good selective attention or get distracted easily and too see where the athletes strengths are to help develop tactics in the future. this benefits the individuals/team by showing weakness areas which can be developed upon. at elite level this can be done using video analysis where the performer and coach will sit down and review the athlete in their specific sport and pointing out what would of been done when bad decisions are made. for example watching back a rugby game and the coach pointing out what move the athlete should of completed or space which was open . also after a game the rugby play will be able to get stats on their performances including tackles made and distances covered. Participation Performance assessment is one of the purposes of sports performance. At participation level it is used to identify weaknesses in a team and to see if players are focused on the sporting task . at participation level this can be done by observation on the coach, where the coach will feedback to the athlete of what can be done. because lack of equipment the athlete will receive feedback on the coach therefore the comments are more subjective to coaches opinion but assessment will be completed by the coaches and others around the athlete. for example in a rugby game an overall assessment will be feedback on how the performer did overall.
  • 8. Recovery after injury Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of purpose (‘why’ and ‘how’) Elite Recovery after injury for an elite performer will be a fast process because having facilities which will aid recovery and having tests on regular basis to get detailed analysis of the injury and its progression back to recovery. This benefits the athlete because they will have full details on when they are able to get back to training and will be seen by high quality specialists. For example elite football clubs, in the premier league, they have high level physiotherapists will mean recovery happens quicker and recovery will less likely happen again as there is high control over the training the athlete is able to do. Participation Recovery after injury for an elite performer is a slower process because of not having specialist physiotherapists and doctors at their club teams, if an injury happens the athlete will have to go to doctors and find a separate physiotherapist which will not has a lot of control over how the athlete aids their own healing process due to participation level having other commitments such as work and education.
  • 9. Assessment of health status Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of purpose (‘why’ and ‘how’) Elite Assessment of health status is to make sure the athlete is healthy, this benefits the performer to make sure they are free from disease, injury and illness, an elite performer does this by having a medical assessment before becoming an elite performer and before major competitions to make sure if is okay for them to participate and to train. for example if a footballer transfers clubs they will take a medical to make sure they are healthy. Participation Assessment of health status for a participation level is done by athletes completing a PAR-Q when starting the sporting event showing that they have no health issues and that doctors are okay with them taking part in exercise. On a yearly basis health status will be updated making sure that the athlete isn't at harm.
  • 10. Squad selection Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of purpose (‘why’ and ‘how’) Elite Squad selection is one of the resources of sports performance. At elite level squad selection is based upon who has performed well and test results showing that the athlete has high fitness test results. this benefits the individuals/team because selection is based upon who has worked hard in training to improve their abilities and who is at the top of their game For example if 2 footballers are going for same position on the pitch in midfield if ones aerobic endurance is better than another they will be more likely to be chosen. Participation Squad selection is one of the resources of sports performance. At participation level squad selection will be based upon ability levels involving fitness tests but will also have been influenced by commitment to training sessions. This benefits the athletes because through commitment they will get games played and therefore have more chances to improve. Squad selection will also help an athlete realise if they have under performed if being dropped but benefits them because they will be motivated to succeed and achieve higher. for example a football team with a large squad means selection is harder and analysis of performances with help with selection
  • 11. Goal setting Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of purpose (‘why’ and ‘how’) Elite Goal setting is one of the purposes of sports performance. At elite level is used to help motivate athletes to achieve higher goals with set time periods. This benefits the individuals/team because they have something to aim towards which will improve their performances. For example an elite sprinters long term goal may be to place in the top 6 at a major event i.e. the Olympics. Participation Goal setting is one of the purposes of sports performance. At participation level goal setting is used to get improvements within the athletes ability. The targets will also help show progression in the athlete. This benefits the individuals/team by giving them motivation to get better and a time frame to word towards . An example of a goal for a participation level is for a rugby player to improve a 5 minute run by 100 meters within 4 weeks.
  • 12. Human Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of resources (‘why’ and ‘what’) Elite At elite levels to make sure the athlete is progressing and healthy, at elite level human resources are highly skilled and qualified in sporting areas this includes high level coaches. Human resources are also used when doing tests so the results are reliable and accurate. This benefit the performer because it'll help provide them with specific training programmes. Participation At participation level human resources are used to make sure people get involved and have the opportunity to take part and to develop their sporting abilities. At participation level will not be of a high skilled level and may have only low qualifications. The benefits to the athletes because it gives them an opportunity to progress in sport.
  • 13. Facilities Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of resources (‘why’ and ‘what’) Elite At elite level facilities are used to help get highly accurate results, facilities which this is done in places such as laboratory facilities but also the training facilities which they can access. This benefits performers because the facilities give them the best chances to improve their abilities and laboratories to get the best tests results. Participation At participation level facilities used will not be at a high quality level and may involve being apart of leisure centres and public grounds. For the athlete using public grounds means that it doesn't cost them any extra get to the facilities and it is likely to be local grounds so they will be able to access easily and means they can train when they are available.
  • 14. Time Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of resources (‘why’ and ‘what’) Elite at elite level athletes need have plenty of time to help progress themselves by being able to evaluate their performances and training programmes in depth, also with the amounts of training needed to become elite means that the athlete/team must have a lot of time in their schedules to fulfil the training programmes. this is a benefit to the athlete because making sure they have this time to analyse and train means they have a better chance of progressing and if time not given up evaluation of training and performances may be inaccurate. Participation At participation level training time is hard because the athlete/teams normally have work and also education to go alongside sports, therefore they're training programmes are arranged around others schedules and having training in the evenings. by not having time to be able to train and to analyse their performances each week and possibly only having 1/2 training sessions a week means analysing may not have in-depth detail and meaning training programmes which are adapted around programmes may not be as accurate.
  • 15. Equipment Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of resources (‘why’ and ‘what’) Elite At elite level equipment is used to help fitness test athletes and help throughout training sessions, equipment at elite levels are of high quality which helps benefit the athletes training and can be used to help fitness testing. This benefits the performer having big technology equipment means test results are more reliable because of given in depth results. For example at elite levels technological equipment such as VO2 Max equipment to get detailed readings. Participation At participation level equipment used is of a lower standard, which can also have many purposes such as testing and training. This benefits the athlete of participation level because it helps develop fundamental skills and drills which will help them in their sports and sporting performances. For example using cones to create drills for athletes to complete.
  • 16. Financial Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of resources (‘why’ and ‘what’) Elite Financial is one of the resources of sports performance. At elite level financial is used to develop new training facilities/equipment for the athletes to train and also be tested with .This benefits the individuals/team by development of technology will aid the training processes and also to help development into research which can help athletes train at the highest levels . Financial for elite clubs can be done from ticket sales within stadiums and winning leagues for example the premier league clubs are able to get money to help developments and investing in the club from tickets to games and also depending on their rankings in the league. Participation At participation level financial is harder to come across due to not much money being invested. If needing money for equipment and facilities this may be done my fundraising and hoping for sponsorships to help develop the club. For example a local athletics team to train at a stadium may have to rent out space to train therefore need the money.
  • 17. Scientific support and equipment Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of resources (‘why’ and ‘what’) Elite Scientific support and equipment is one of the resources of sports performance. At the elite level financial scientific support and equipment is used to help analyse athletes with the best facilities which will benefit them by being able to focus on specific areas in training and create ways to develop plans to improve the athletes performance. An example of this is new developments of equipments and dietary needs for specific sports. Participation At participation level scientific support and equipment is hard to get for this level of sport and so they aren't able to use this facility therefore the scientific support doesn't come as a benefit to them, for example, the equipment used it very expensive and need a skilled and trained person to be able to use the machinery.
  • 18. Safety Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of resources (‘why’ and ‘what’) Elite Safety is one of the resources of sports performance. At elite level the athletes are protected in games and meets being plenty of security around the athletes protecting them for getting hurt. Athletes are also protected by playing in safe grounds which have lots of safety precautions on game days. For example rugby games will have plenty of stewards, guards and constant CCTV monitoring making sure no one is at risk. Participation Safety checks will be completed before game to make sure the grounds are safe to play on. There is less control over others protecting the athletes. Risks assessment will also be completed with coaches records being checked. also safety of equipment used in both games and training for example both rugby and football boots are check to make sure studs are regulation size
