Part II:
After reading Chapters 1-2, please describe evaluation. What aspects of a player's game should be evaluated, and how would you do it? What methods of evaluation have you used? What methods have you observed being used? What methods keep players motivated and moving toward development both physically and mentally? Pay close attention to the section entitled EVALUATION TOOLS on page 15. Share your thoughts on how you would evaluate position specific game day performance. How would you evaluate tactical skills? What about technical skills? Although you want to ensure you are examining ON the field evaluation, don't limit your discussion. What have you seen work in the off-season? The key is to discover methods of furthering player development and maintaining motivation through various methods of evaluation.
Part III:
Pages 6-8 in the text discusses the "traditional" versus "games approach" to coaching. Define both of these strategies. Describe which method you prefer as a football coach and explain why. Be sure to provide specific examples as to how you incorporate one or both of these methods as a coach.
From the Book
Evaluating Technical and Tactical Skills
Football is a team sport. In building your team, you should use specific evaluation tools to assess the development of the individual parts that make up the whole of the team. You must remember that basic physical skills contribute to the performance of the technical and tactical skills. In addition, a vast array of nonphysical skills, such as mental capacity, communication skills and character training, overlay athletic performance and affect its development (Rainer Martens,
Successful Coaching
,
Third Edition
). In this chapter we will examine evaluation guidelines, exploring the specific skills that should be evaluated and the tools to be used to accomplish that evaluation. Evaluations as described in this chapter will help you produce critiques of your players that are more objective, something that you should continually reach for.
Guidelines for Evaluation
Regardless of the skill that you are measuring and the evaluation tool that you are using, you should observe the basic guidelines that govern the testing and evaluation process. First, the athletes need to know and understand the purpose of the test and its relationship to the sport. If you are evaluating a technical skill, the correlation should be easy. But when you are evaluating physical skills, or mental, communication or character skills, you must explain the correlation between the skill and the aspect of the game that will benefit.
Second, you must motivate the athlete to improve. Understanding the correlation to his game will help, but sometimes the games seem a long ways away during practices and training. In the physical skills area, elevating the status of the testing process can help inspire the athletes. If you can create a game-day atmosphere with many players present and watching a.
Working with the Danish National team and top clubs like Juventus and Chelsea, we have found fitness
testing a very useful tool to evaluate the players. It has allowed us to adjust the planning and make
training specific for individuals in the squad. Testing is, however, not only for elite-players. All players
independent of age and level of football can benefit from being evaluated. The players will obtain
greater awareness of their capacity and understand where improvements can be obtained. They often
become highly motivated for more training and are aiming at performing better through harder training.
Tests in football should be performed on the field and this book describes a number of tests which are
simple to conduct and do require limited equipment and time investment. For example, in the Yo-Yo
intermittent recovery test 30 players can be tested within 10 minutes using just a CD-player. The
physical demands in football are complex ranging from the high power needed in single actions, such as
in a shot at goal, to endurance being able to perform also at the end of a game. The present book
presents information of how to test the various aspects of fitness performance that are important for
the football player and provides guidelines of what is to be expected at various categories of football
players. Generally, it is easy and useful to perform testing, so it is just to get started.
This presentation highlights the contents and utility of the SportsPro as part of a team\'s recruiting and talent identification process. The tool has been extensively validated and has demonstrated strong predictive validity on an international sample of athletes.

Performance At county/regional standard it is essential that potential
talent is identified, for example when playing county
standard in rugby selectors observe the game and score
players using their performance criteria, high consistent
scores of a player can lead to the player progressing
further up the performance ladder.
Elite At this level it is vital to identify talent this is important
for an athlete of this level to progress further in their
sport this may be being scouted by a higher quality
team. An athlete may be identified to have potential to
be trained to become a potential Olympic medallist.

Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of purpose (‘why’ and ‘how’)
Performance At this level athletes/players will be at county/regional
standard it is important for coaches and conditioning
teams to monitor fitness levels of the players/athlete in
order to see progression. Simple fitness tests can be
conducted during training sessions and comparisons
between elite level scores and an athlete’s score at
county standard can give a good indication of where
the athlete is performing at.
Elite It is important to monitor fitness levels of an athlete at
this level due to intensity and how frequent matches,
competitions are so fitness of the athlete is at optimum
levels. Athlete’s fitness levels must be improved
through training and progression needs to be
monitored and progressing at a steady rate. Any drops
in physical fitness must be identified as soon as possible
by the athlete’s coaches.
6. Identifying strengths and areas for
improvement
Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of purpose (‘why’ and ‘how’)
Performance At this level it is vital to identify both strengths and weaknesses and
areas for improvement. It is important to identify areas for
improvement in order for the athlete to set smart goal and objectives
of how these goals are going to be met for example 20+ goals by the
end of the season. It is important to identify strengths at this level so
the athlete can see how coaches have view their performance and
work with their athlete to develop the identified strengths. It is also
important to identify weakness within the athlete’s performance so
that the athlete and coach can work together and improve these
weaknesses and turn them into strengths.
Elite At this level it is essential to identify both strengths, weaknesses and
areas for improvement for example a weaknesses may be power, this
will be identified by the athletes coaching team and a power specific
training regime will be incorporated into the athletes training.
Strengths need to be identified at this level in order for the athlete to
feel confident and motivated to use their strengths to their advantage
during competitions and matches, it is important that strengths must
trained continuously.

higher level.
Elite At elite level it is vital that an athlete has a performance
assessment that is clear and concise. Strengths and
weaknesses of the athletes performance must be
clearly identified this can be done between athlete and
coach through video analysis sessions, suitable training
plans must be put in place to work on the athletes
weaknesses. Other top end technology such as prozone
and opta specialise in producing stats for professional
teams and elite athletes.
8. Recovery after injury
Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of purpose (‘why’ and ‘how’)
Performance At this level the athlete will usually have a physio in
close contact with the athlete’s regional or county
team. This will be important to see a physio
continuously after illness in order for the athlete to get
back to training and competing as quickly as possible.
Elite At this level it is essential that recovery after illness is
monitored and carried out at the highest level possible.
Due to the performance level of this athlete it Is likely
that the athlete will have highly qualified physio and
specialists teams to help them during the recovery.
Regular visits to top surgeons, specialists in
rehabilitation will be available to the athlete. To
maximize recovery rate.
9. Assessment of health status
Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of purpose (‘why’ and ‘how’)
Performance The definition of health is ‘being free of injury, illness or
disease’. At this level if an athlete is suffering from any
of the above they will not train or play in any
competitive matches until they are fit and healthy
again.
Elite Due to the high performance level of this athlete it is
likely that the person health must be at a high level in
order to compete at the level they’re competing at. If a
person health is not 100% is likely that they will miss
out whether its playing a match or competing in a
competition.
10. Squad selection
Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of purpose (‘why’ and ‘how’)
Performance This will be determined by many factors such as
attendance to training, attitude to training and
performance in training. This will be assessed by your
regional/county coaches taking all the above factors
into account.
Elite This again will be determined by many factors such as
performance in training, attitude to training and
possible fitness results in training. Compared to
performance level squad selection the analysis of every
individual player will be more thorough due to the
competition for places.
11. Goal setting
Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of purpose (‘why’ and ‘how’)
Performance Goal setting is vital at this level it is important for a player at
this level, goal setting directs attention to tasks at hand and
highlights what needs to be completed. For a performance
level athlete goal setting will be important so that the athlete
can work towards the next level, this might be for example
getting divisional trials. Goal setting will be set by the athletes
coach or set by them.
Elite Goal setting is essential at this level of sport due to the
competitive nature that this athlete will be competing and
playing at. This is important because it will allow the athlete
set high goals that will require a lot of hard work in training to
achieve them. Goal setting in elite sport will be managed by
coaches and specialists who can work with the athlete
identifying. Specific ways that the set goal can be achieved, for
example winning gold at the Olympics your coach, physio and
team will support you with your goals in order to achieve
them.

determined by the coaches and the safety of the players will
be of high performance for example in rugby all safety
equipment such as body pads and gumshields etc will be put
in place.
Elite At this level it is essential that the safety of the athlete is
monitored. The athletes coaches and specialist team will make
sure that when tests are carried out on the athlete such as vo2
max that the safety of the athlete is at the forefront of their
minds. during competitions and game the safety of the athlete
will be the main focus cctv and security will be in place in
order for safety standards to be at their highest. Equipment
will be checked in order to reduce the risk of uninforced injury.
