why is there
such buzz around
BIG DATA?
Isn’t Big Data
just big hype?
... How big is BIG?
What is it that we are
really talking about?
“Big Data is the frontier of a firm's ability to
store, process, and access (SPA) all the data
it needs to operate effectively, make
decisions, reduce risks, and serve
customers.”
-- Forrester

“Big data is data that exceeds the processing
capacity of conventional database systems.
The data is too big, moves too fast, or
doesn't fit the strictures of your database
architectures. To gain value from this data,
you must choose an alternative way to
process it.” -- O’Reilly

Big data is an all-encompassing term for any
collection of data sets so large and complex that it
becomes difficult to process using traditional data
processing applications.
The challenges include analysis, capture, curation,
search, sharing, storage, transfer, visualization, and
privacy violations. The trend to larger data sets is
due to the additional information derivable from
analysis of a single large set of related data, as
compared to separate smaller sets with the same
total amount of data.
