1. Unit 11 Task 3
Analysis of Sports Performance
P5 Criteria Only
2. Unit 11 - Task 3 - P5
Explain the purpose and resources
required for analysing different levels
of sporting performance.
Pages 22-26 of the Electronic Text
Book will be very useful.
3. Task Context
• You are creating a resource for future coaches based
on your experiences in Unit 11 tasks 1 and 2.
• You need to choose two of the performer levels below
for you whole task to be based on.
– Foundation
– Participation
– Performance
– Elite
• You do not need to complete a comparison just explain
in detail each of the following factors.
• This resource should be able to support future coaches
start the work you have completed so far.
4. Talent ID
Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of purpose (‘why’ and ‘how’)
Participation The purpose of talent identification is to establish who
is good enough to move up to the next level of the
sport participation pyramid in this case being
performance stage. An example of this is a scout going
to watch a Sunday league game and spotting any
individuals who have the ability to move up to county
and Riemann league.
Elite The purpose for an elite performer would be to see
which individuals are the best at their level. This would
be for example a premier league footballer who
catches the eye of an England scout as they are
believed to be good enough to play for their national
side. Another would be in order to establish which
footballers are to be shortlisted for awards such as
balan d’or.
5. Monitoring current fitness levels
Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of purpose (‘why’ and ‘how’)
Participation Monitoring fitness levels is not considered the most
important to performers at this stage of the pyramid as
they are not required to be incredibly fit. A fitness test
at this level would be a test like the 12 minute cooper
run as this test easily determines how fit an indivdual is
and is free to conduct.
Elite At the top end of the participation pyramid current
fitness level is a lot more important. A way a test can
be conducted can be as simple as just a bleep test or
the cooper run which many premier league clubs
believe is proven to work. However at this stage more
equipment is available to conduct more indepth tests
such as a vo2 max test. The reason why these tests are
conducted at this stage are to asses whether the
performer is fit enough to partake in sport. When a
club pays a lot of money for a top performer they will
also want to ensure that the player is in top conditoin.
6. Identifying strengths and areas for
improvement
Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of purpose (‘why’ and ‘how’)
Participation At this level it will be a coach assessing a player in
training or in a game and having a chat with the athlete
about what they believe are the performers strengths
and weaknesses. The player can then take this advice
on board and try to improve their game. Often a coach
will identify a team as a wholes strengths and
weaknesses and plan training sessions accordingly.
Elite Identifying the strengths and weaknesses of an
individual at the elite stage is incredibly important as
this helps to determine the faults in their game and
how they need to produce a training plan to improve in
this areas. This process can also be helpful in analyzing
opponents and how to exploit an opposing teams
weak links.
7. Performance assessment
Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of purpose (‘why’ and ‘how’)
Participation At this stage the purpose is to see how players in the
team react to game factors such as extreme weather
and fans etc. this can then be trained in special training
sessions where the coach tries to mimic these factors
and help the individual cope with them. Also
performance assessment refers to what a team
struggles with that can then be trained.
Elite At elite stage it’s a lot easier to asses performance as
every game is videoed and available to watch and
observe afterwards either individually or as a team.
Individual training session can then begin in order to
make the teams weaknesses dissapear.
8. Recovery after injury
Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of purpose (‘why’ and ‘how’)
Participation When getting injured at participation level the only
advice and support you can the majority of the time is
to sit out miss training and the game etc. The coach will
have a chat with the individual to see if they are also
psychologically ready to return to action and will often
break them in gently e.g. playing last 30 minutes on
first game back.
Elite At elite stage injuries cause a lot more concern as
players are being payed to play. This means that for
every game they miss it is costing the club money. This
means that recovery from injury will involve the use of
specialists to ease the player back to full fitness. If
there is a chance of the injury recurring then the team
should not risk the athlete and shouldn’t hurry them
back to playing.
9. Assessment of health status
Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of purpose (‘why’ and ‘how’)
Participation At participation stage the player will have to state any
health conditions they have that can cause them harm.
The manager will usually rely on their word as to
whether they are fit enough to partake in exercise and
training programs. A PAR-Q is often used to asses their
health.
Elite At elite stage word of mouth is not good enough in
order to asses health status. Tests will be conducted on
the athlete first when they join the club but then when
they are recovering from injury which gives detailed
evidence on how fit and healthy the performer is.
When Injured the player will see specialists so they will
also be key on the assessment to the players health
status. This will then help the coach to decide whether
to player is allowed to partake in the training program.
10. Squad selection
Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of purpose (‘why’ and ‘how’)
participation At participation stage it is up to the manager and
coaches to determine which of their squad are fit and
ready to play in the starting eleven to achieve success.
Often at participation stage teams will only have one
player available for positions which makes this job a lot
easier as there is no selection process.
elite At elite stage the squad selection is a lot more
challenging as there is often 3 or 4 players available for
each position. This means that the coach will have to
analyzing individual performances in both matches and
training in order to asses which player is best for the
good of the team and to enable to team to have
success.
11. Goal setting
Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of purpose (‘why’ and ‘how’)
Participation Goal setting by a coach is often not used at this stage
however individual goals are used e.g to score 30 goals
in a season. The player will often not realize that their
goals will have to be SMART in order to work. They will
also not stick to their goals often and forget about
them.
elite At the elite stage goals will be set for individuals by the
coaches that are specific, measureable, achievable,
realistic and time bound. Athlete will be motivated to
stick to these goals as they will want to achieve them.
These goals will be discussed in detail by the coaches
and then brought to the indivudual to discuss with.
12. Human
Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of resources (‘why’ and ‘what’)
Participation As participation is done primarily for enjoyment with
only an aspect of competitiveness athletes are often
not as motivated. The coaches need to be selected as
ones that promote enjoyment and fun as well as doing
well.
elite At elite level players are being paid to perform and this
is their full time job so they are fully committed and
motivated to succeed. This will be fully promoted by
the coaches and staff at the club who will do their
upmost to win.
13. Facilities
Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of resources (‘why’ and ‘what’)
Participation At participation level the team will not have access to
any high tech facilities such as sport science centres
and have to make do with what they have. They will
train and play at a park most probably and will have to
rely on its players to have their own gym membership if
they want to do any work at the gym.
Elite At elite stage it is a different story as they have access
to whatever they want including modern sport science
facilities. This means that any injury sustained will be
able to trained at the highest level in order for them to
recover the best way. They also have access to a
football stadium to play at which means a better
surface which promotes better football and makes it
less likely for injuries to occur.
14. Time
Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of resources (‘why’ and ‘what’)
Participation At this stage football is only a hobby and is regarded as
less important as school and work for both coaches and
players. This means that there is limited time for
training and playing games. Often teams at this stage
will train for 1 hour once a week and play one game per
week.
Elite At elite stage players are being paid to play which
means that this needs to be number one priority to
them and often means that failure to turn up to
training leads to fines. Coaches will also be being paid
which means they will be very committed and will be
100% determined to the team.
15. Equipment
Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of resources (‘why’ and ‘what’)
participation At this stage minimal equipment is available to be used.
Only the basics like cones and footballs and bibs are
used along with park goals. This equipment is cheap
easy to use and is also the necessities you need for a
decent training session. Any extra equipment is used
solely because of the coach thinking its needed and
buying it himself.
Elite At elite level there is all the equipment you could ask
for available. Things like manikins and goalkeeping
cradles are used to make training sessions more varied
and harder for the athletes. This equipment is supplied
by the teams funds and requests can be made if any
other equipment Is wanted.
16. Financial
Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of resources (‘why’ and ‘what’)
participation Finance available to a club at this level is only through
kit sponsorship and subs paid by players. However this
is only enough to pay pitch fees and for basics like
water bottles and cones etc.
elite At elite stage lots of funding is available through loads
of sponsors and fan bases. TV licenses etc. this means
that if the club is run well by the owners there is
finance available to buy new players as well as new
training complexes etc. at this stage the wages of the
players and staff still need to be payed aswell which all
needs to be funded. This is why big football teams
charge high prices for such little things as a hot dog in
the big grounds like wembley.
17. Scientific support and equipment
Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of resources (‘why’ and ‘what’)
participation At participation stage scientific support and equipment
is not available at all which sometimes is troublesome
when it comes to injuries etc. with n income as a team
there is no way such luxuries can be afforded
elite At elite level they can afford such luxuries as scientific
support and equipment. Each team will have a physio
and often the bigger clubs have several. Teams also
have access to big sport science centers if any injured
player needs help on the road to recovery as well as
diagnosis. This is important to the club as fans pay a lot
of money to see their team and will want their players
in the best possible shape.
18. Safety
Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of resources (‘why’ and ‘what’)
Participation Safety is crucial at every stage of the pyramid. This
includes things like wearing goalie gloves and shin pads
and checking studs before the game. This also refers to
when a game is called off in torrential conditions as this
is when injuries are more likely to occur. Coaches are in
charge of keeping their players attitudes in the game as
well.
elite Big stadiums have to ensure safety at this level. This
refers to separation between fans and ensuring there is
enough police to prevent any fans coming on the pitch
for example. All of the factors from participation still
apply even at this level. Police checking people before
the enter the ground is also part of this to ensure no
one bring weapons to football for example.
