Key elements of a typical LAN include network cards that connect computers to the network, switches to connect network nodes faster than hubs, routers that connect multiple networks and are managed by administrators, and the TCP/IP protocol which allows different operating systems and networks to communicate using TCP to reliably transmit information and IP to direct it to the proper destination identified by its IP address.
