The famous author Austin O Malley stated, Revenge is often like biting a dog
because the dog bit you. O Malley s point of view is seen in classic and modern
literature about humanity. The Cask of Amontillado, a classic short story by
Edgar Allen Poe is about the narrator Montresor who is going to get revenge on his
friend during a festival in Italy. Montresor uses his wit to lure Fortunato to his awful
demise. A Poison Tree, a classic poem by William Blake is based on a man who holds
in all of his anger to release on his foe. The narrator uses his pain and sorrow to
finally attack his foe to his death. Because of events of verbal irony and treachery,
Poe and Blake use their narrators of The Cask of Amontilladoand A Poison Tree to
reveal their enemies disloyalty doesn t get a free pass; rather betrayal can lead to
thoughts and ideas of vengeance carefully planned out.
Blake and Poe use dramatic irony to convey that enemies oblivious of the truth are
often put in peril. In The Cask of Amontillado , Montresor s friend Fortunato
constantly offends him, without knowing the harm he is causing. He vows
revenge against Fortunato to avenge himself, but makes it clear that no one will
know he is causing harm. He continually smile[d] in his face, and he did not
perceive that my smile now was at the thought of his immolation. (Poe 5). Since
Fortunato never knew that he was causing harm, he kept making fun of Montresor
without knowing Montresor s real feelings. Ever since, Montresor has sworn
vengeance, but Fortunato never knew of the plan. Fortunato doesn t know his
enemy is planning for harm to come to him later. Only Montresor is aware of the
fate of his old friend Fortunato. In A Poison Tree , the speaker never expresses to
his friend that he was causing harm to him. Since there was no communication
between the two, I told it [harm caused] not, my wrath did grow. (Blake 3 4). There
was no way for him to let go of his rage, so it grew and grew inside of him until it
eventually burst. In the beginning, the narrator tells his friend of the harm he has
caused and ends his anger. Later his foe causes him harm, but he never informs his

When testifying, the woman only had one adjective to describe the perpetrator, a word that damned the twenty six year old to a guilty verdict; black. The men then began to fire round after round at his lifeless body for the amusement of townsfolk who had gathered to watch the lynching, until, one stray bullet severed the rope, (Yellin 1). As the bloody corpse fell to the ground to the delight of the white children, one of the men put the barrel of his gun to Mr. Johnson s head and fired five times, (Yellin 1). The men faced no charges and nearly one hundred years later the Supreme Court found the viciously murdered man innocent. It is exciting that I have a clear vision of the career I want to pursue as an academic, and humbling to think of the great opportunity I could have to teach future social workers. Early motivation to enter the field of social work was in response to adverse childhood experiences with domestic violence, parental substance abuse, poverty, and homelessness further complicated by foster care intervention. My foster care experience included five foster placements, enrollment in countless schools, countless lost relationships, and a failed adoption. Though these experiences created much hardship, they have certainly promoted resilience and helped lead me to my current ambition of seeking a Ph.D. As a recipient of foster care intervention, I exited state custody through legal permanence. Through education, advocacy, and direct social work practice with youth in residential treatment, I acquired new skills and insight to addressing social and child welfare problems.
