Life on the early Texas frontier was self-sufficient as settlers had to rely on local materials and skills to survive. They lived in simple homes like log cabins or dogtrot cabins furnished with handmade items. Settlers made their own clothing from buckskin or homespun cotton and grew and hunted their own food, relying heavily on corn. While under Mexican rule, Protestants could not openly practice their religion, but some religious education was offered through traveling preachers or private schools when possible.
