- 2. Description of Region The Native Americans of the west used technology to solve their problems that they had. They used the technology also to help them when they we’re farming. Technology is the design and use of tools and methods to solve problems They went to school, did work and sometimes the carved totem poles
- 3. Tribes • The Mojave • The Chinook • The Paiute • The Tlingit • The Tsimshian
- 4. Clothing Mojave- didn’t wear much, men wore loincloths and women wore knee-length skirts. Shirts weren’t necessary. Chinook-men didn’t wear really wear much clothes at all, some men wore breechclouts. Women wore short skirts made out of cedar bark or grass. The Native Americans of the west wore fur robes and moccasins in cold weather Paiute- wore appropriate clothing made of leather Tlingit- same as Chinook Tsimshian- bark clothing
- 5. Shelter Mojave- they lived in earthen homes made out of the surrounding resources Chinook-they lived on a reservation in small little homes Paiute- they lived small, temporary huts made of willow poles that are covered with brush or reeds. Tlingit- they lived cedar plank house Tsimshian- they lived in longhouses
- 6. Food Sources Berries, roots and other plants grew plentifully in wet climate. In forests there were beavers, bears, deer and elk for hunting. They got everything else they needed from the sea. The oceans, rivers and streams were teemed with salmon, herring, halibut and cod. Groups would go canoeing to catch seal, sea lion and whales. From the shore people gathered clams, seaweed and shellfish. However salmon became the most important resource for food.
- 7. Everyday Life Mojave- used a hunt dry method Chinook- respected their senior elders Paiute- they gathered food and water to drink and anything else they needed it for Tlingit- they hunted for salmon Tsimshian- caught fish
- 8. Traditions and Ceremonies Mojave- they were governed by the chief who picked the ceremony Chinook- the potlatch ceremony was used to redistribute wealth Paiute- had to share clothing and languages that were similar Tlingit- worshiped their chief and had potlatches at dinners Tsimshian- had potlatches
- 9. Weapons and Tools Mojave- used bow and arrow, and used nets and wooden fish trap when fishing. In war they fired their arrows and fought with clubs and spears. They used leather shields. Chinook- same as Mojave Paiute- used bow and arrows Tlingit- used harpoons, bone fishhooks, and wooden fish traps. Tsimshian- same as Tlingit
- 10. Crafts Mojave- made coiled pottery, bead work and beaded collars Chinook- made bear grass baskets and wood-carving arts Paiute- made baskets Tlingit- made baskets, carving arts, totem poles, and Chilkat robes Tsimshian- made totem poles
