Anson Jones was elected president of the Republic of Texas in 1844. As president, he inherited economic problems and a debate among Texans about whether Texas should pursue annexation by the United States. Jones continued policies aimed at reducing government spending. The most serious issue during his administration was deciding whether annexation by the United States would be beneficial for Texas.
