The document defines common Twitter terms and concepts in 140 characters or less including:
- The 140 character limit for tweets and options for tweeting longer content.
- How @ replies work to have public conversations between users and how to include all followers.
- What direct messages (DMs) are for private conversations between followers.
- How hashtags work to categorize tweets and allow users to find others discussing the same topic.
1. TWITTER GLOSSARY
140 character limit
You can exceed this if you use Twitlonger and there used to be the option to
tweet longer with deck.ly on Tweetdeck but this has been phased out. If you need
to say more, link to another location, like a blog.
@ reply
A public message between two or more Twitter users.
If you start your message @KimMcAllister only those among your followers who
also follow me will see the message on their timeline. If you want all your
followers to see the message then put a space or words in front.
DM – direct message
A private message between two Twitter users. This is not visible to anyone
except the two users and is only possible if both users are following each other. I
couldn’t DM Lady Gaga but I could DM golfer Darren Clarke! If you are having a
prolonged exchange of @ replies, it is Twitter etiquette to “take it to the DM” and
stop cluttering up people’s timelines!
# Hashtag
This is a live link and a label that we put on a tweet- a kind of “file under”. Very
helpful for TV shows, events and campaigns so that people discussing the same
topic can find each other. Click on it and a list of everyone else using that hashtag
will appear. (If you are on a Mac, type alt and 3 for a hashtag#)
List
A way of sub-dividing the people you follow into smaller timelines. Lists can be
either public or private and Twitter users can follow a list or the people on it.
They are great for market research (in which case tick the private box) and for
finding relevant followers.
Avatar
The profile picture you display. It should be a jpeg, gif or png file, no more than
700K and square (otherwise Twitter will chop bits off and make it a square). It’s
best to make it as big a file as possible as people can click on it to see the original.
Favourite *
A way to bookmark an individual tweet. While it’s a great way to save a tweet to
easily find later (if it has a link to a long article, for example) it’s worth
remembering that your favourites are public and can say a lot about you.
Therefore, any time someone says something positive about your product or
service, favourite it.
2. Bit.ly / owl.ly/ tinyurl etc
A shortened URL (web address) which might look like this: ow.ly/alqvJ
It saves using up your valuable 140 characters and also serves as a unique link to
an individual web page, allowing you to measure its effectiveness.
