Tutor Job Description
Position Description
Provide individual and small group tutoring to students in their home, library, recreation
center or school. Assist students in improving academic achievement by meeting with
them on a regular basis to clarify learning problems and work on study skills. Other
assistance might include: reviewing class material, discussing the text, predicting test
questions, or working on solutions to problems. Tutoring is a supplement to classroom
teaching. Tutors are not expected to know everything about the subject for which they
tutor.
Responsibilities
1. Schedule tutoring appointments with student’s parents or guardians. Confirmation
will be done by administrator prior to start of sessions for the week.
2. Travel to students' homes, libraries, recreation or schools to conduct tutoring
sessions.
3. Research or recommend textbooks, software, equipment, or other learning
materials to complement tutoring.
4. Prepare and facilitate tutoring workshops, collaborative projects, or academic
support sessions for small groups of students.
5. Participate in training and development sessions to improve tutoring practices or
learn new tutoring techniques.
6. Organize tutoring environment to promote productivity and learning.
7. Monitor student performance or assist students in academic environments, such as
classrooms, laboratories, or computing centers.
8. Review class material with students by discussing text, working solutions to
problems, or reviewing worksheets or other assignments.
9. Provide feedback to students using positive reinforcement techniques to
encourage, motivate, or build confidence in students.confirm with student’s
parents/guardians before session can begin.
10. Be punctual for all scheduled tutoring sessions. It is your responsibility to notify
us as soon as possible if you cannot meet with your students. Please call
925.424.1450 or 925.424.1471.
11. Remain at scheduled session for at least 15 minutes for student to arrive. Contact
administrator at 443-300-7290 if student is a no show/no call. Administrator will
contact student’s parents/guardians.
12. Must communicate and get approval for changes in schedule dates, times and
location prior to the change.
13. Complete and hand in all required paperwork before the close of business day
after each session or the following business day if session is scheduled after 4pm.
Qualifications
• Tutor must have high school diploma, some college and/or currently a teacher,
mentor or completed course(s) in child care.
• Responsible, dependable, honest, and mature.
• Friendly, patient, and sensitive to a diversity of students.
• Skill in both verbal and written communication.
• Ability to read and write the English language.
Assignments/Pay
• Tutors earn $9.00 an hour for both individual and group tutoring.
• Tutoring will be assigned according to student demand, tutor availability, and
seniority.
• Tutors must contact assigned students within two days of receiving the
assignment.
• Employment as a tutor does not guarantee a minimum number of work hours.
Orientation and Training
• The administrator will be available to discuss and to address any concerns.
• Supplemental materials will be made available concerning reading skills and on
dealing with children’s varying ages and backgrounds.
• Training and assessments will be held quarterly.
