                         Department of Education Studies
                         Task 1 – 10 August 2011
                         Lecturer: Dr Muavia Gallie
                         Module: EDU210T (Education Management)
                         Submission Date: 24 August 2011

This task is a culmination of discussion that took place during the fist
lesson of the second semester. The focus of the lesson was on the
difference between Education Administration, Management and
Leadership. More often than not, these three concepts are treated in
the literature and books as similar or more or lest the same. We
therefore argued that these terms, from the position of the lecturer,
are different in the following way:
• Education Administration – it has to do with the implementation
     and adherence of the RULES and REGULATIONS (policies,
     agreements, Acts, etc.) of an organisation/school. Therefore, an
     administrator should know the documents where these rules and
     regulations emanating from as part of the basis of performing his/
     her duties/responsibilities;
• Education Management – it has to do with the facilitation of
     healthy human relations between those in the organisation/
     school, whether the relationship is vertical and/or horizontal.
     Therefore, a managers should have people skills, and know how
     and when to apply these skills given the different types of
     personalities and traits among people;
• Education Leadership – it has to do with the design, development
     and implementation of a vision (future preferred state) that excites
     colleagues to do whatever it takes to achieve the future goals/
     station. Therefore, a leader must be able to pursued people,
     excite people, challenge people, redirect people, be prepared to
     be challenged, to be unpopular for a while, etc. in order to achieve
     the future preferred results.

                                    1
Based on the above, you task is to discuss each of these three
concepts under the following headings:
1. List 5 definitions on each of these concepts from 5 different
   authors well known within the discipline. You must ensure that
   these definitions are properly referenced in terms of the Harvard
   method;
2. From the list above, identify the one definition which you agree the
   most, and motivate why you chose this one;
3. List 5 activities which take place at school that are directly related
   to these concepts. Take note that the administration should focus
   on rules and regulation application, the management should focus
   on people relationship and interaction, while the leadership should
   focus on ideas, solving problems and improving results.

As indicated above, this task is due on 24 August 2011, during class
time.
