WASH Debate: Building institutional capacity for behaviour change & sanitatio...IRC
The aim of this WASH debate - jointly organised by IRC and IHE Delft - is to bring greater attention to the variety of behaviours that make up good sanitation, and the range of actors involved in keeping a toilet functional and an environment clean. Specifically it will focus on questions such as:
- How can CLTS be best combined with other sanitation approaches?
- And, in situations where CLTS might be mismatched for local contexts, what alternative methods can be applied to effect change?
- How can the capacity for behaviour change and sanitation programming be institutionalised?
Researchers at Iowa State University are working to improve a tool called the Youth Activity Profile that helps schools measure how active students are. The tool more accurately estimates time spent in physical activity and sedentary behavior by calibrating self-reported data with objective monitors. Researchers received a grant to refine the tool so it can account for factors like climate, location, and season that impact activity levels. Improving this measurement tool will help schools better promote physical activity and reduce childhood obesity.
The document presents results from several impact studies on the Akshaya Patra mid-day meal program between 2007-2012. It found that the program led to significant increases in school enrollment and attendance. Enrollment in higher education increased from 47.54% to 74.96% during this period. Studies also found the program reduced the percentage of underweight children from 23% to 18% and improved nutritional status by meeting requirements for energy, carbohydrates, proteins and fat. Additionally, the Akshaya Life Skills program improved academic performance and ensured continued education for students with the number of distinctions increasing year over year. Overall, the program was found to increase school attendance, socialization, empower local women, and increase

Working Group Community Child Health 2 _5.3.12CORE Group
This document describes a study comparing the effectiveness of two care group models - a traditional model and an integrated model - in improving child health and nutrition behaviors in Burundi. The traditional model uses paid NGO staff as supervisors and health promoters, while the integrated model utilizes existing community health workers. Preliminary results found that both models achieved high knowledge levels, though the traditional model was more efficient with household visits. Challenges included engaging husbands, local leaders and issues with some community health workers. An endline survey will be conducted in February 2013 to further evaluate the models.
Operations Research: Methods, Challenges, Emerging Lessons, and Opportunities...CORE Group
The Care Group Model is a strategy used to promote community health. It involves training community health volunteers who each visit 10-15 neighboring households on a regular basis to share health information and facilitate behavior change. Care Groups aim to equitably reach all women and children in a community with individualized behavior change messaging and social support. The document discusses an operations research study in Burundi that compares the effectiveness of an integrated Care Group model using fewer project resources to the traditional higher-input Care Group model. It aims to test whether the adapted model can achieve similar health knowledge, practices, and group functionality and sustainability. Challenges of the research and lessons learned around obtaining ethics approval and integrating data collection into routine monitoring are also outlined.
The Care Group Model is a strategy that uses volunteers to promote behavior change at the household level. A Care Group consists of 10-15 volunteers who regularly meet with project staff for training and support. Each volunteer is responsible for regularly visiting 10-15 neighbors to share what they have learned and facilitate behavior change. The Care Group Model creates a multiplying effect to equitably reach every family with health education and referrals. Operations research was conducted in Burundi to test the effectiveness and sustainability of a lower-input Care Group Model compared to a traditional higher-input model. The research examined the impact on knowledge and practices as well as the functionality and sustainability of the Care Groups under each model.
This document outlines a program to promote healthy eating among young adolescents in Shanghai. The objectives are to raise awareness of the negative effects of junk food, improve attitudes towards healthy eating, and increase self-efficacy around making healthier food choices. The target group is 10-14 year olds in urban Shanghai. Activities include demonstrating the unhealthy aspects of junk food production and health effects through videos and experiments, sharing information graphics on social media, and hosting cooking classes to teach how to make healthier versions of junk foods. The program team consists of nutritionists, food technologists, chefs and teachers. Feasibility issues include costs but also potential government support, while sustainability relies on continued communication, monitoring, and securing funds long-term
This study examined the relationship between caregiver intervention and toddlers' motor skill improvement. 29 toddlers aged 2.5 years old participated in an 8-week motor skills program at 2 daycare centers. The program involved 3 brief motor skill activities per day led by caregivers at one center but not the other. Results showed toddlers who received caregiver intervention significantly improved their kicking, jumping, and other gross motor skills, while those without intervention showed little improvement. The study demonstrated that brief daily caregiver involvement can positively impact toddlers' developing motor abilities.

This document discusses screening for gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). It defines GDM and explains that pregnancy increases insulin resistance. There are two approaches to screening - a single step 75g oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT), or a two step approach using a 50g glucose challenge test followed by a 100g OGTT if thresholds are met. Threshold values for diagnosing GDM on OGTT tests are provided. The Seshiah test, recommended in India, performs a 75g OGTT in the non-fasting state, diagnosing GDM if the 2hr value is ≥140mg/dL.
This randomized controlled trial compared the angiotensin receptor-neprilysin inhibitor LCZ696 to enalapril in over 8,400 patients with heart failure and reduced ejection fraction. It found that LCZ696 reduced the primary composite outcome of cardiovascular death or heart failure hospitalization by 20% compared to enalapril, as well as reducing overall mortality, cardiovascular mortality, heart failure hospitalizations, and improving symptoms. LCZ696 resulted in more hypotension and angioedema but less renal impairment, hyperkalemia, and coughing than enalapril.
This document provides guidelines for correctly formatting references in a thesis according to prescribed standards. It discusses the two main methods of citing references - superscript and bracket formats - and provides examples. Guidelines are provided for citing different publication types such as books, book chapters, journal articles, websites, and more. Reference list formatting is also covered, including ordering and structure of entries.
This document provides statistics and information about thalassemia, including that it affects about 100,000 children worldwide each year. Treatment for one patient costs about $40,000 annually in the UAE. Screening and education programs can help reduce new thalassemia cases, saving billions of dollars in treatment costs over 40 years. The goal of screening programs in the UAE is to identify carrier couples and inform them of their options to avoid having an affected child.
The document discusses newborn screening in India, arguing that it is needed to prevent health issues. It outlines the components of newborn screening programs and principles from Wilson and Jungner. Internationally, most Western countries screen for various treatable genetic disorders. In India, pilot studies found higher rates of congenital hypothyroidism than the West. The document recommends starting screening for congenital hypothyroidism, congenital adrenal hyperplasia, and G6PD deficiency in urban Indian hospitals. It stresses the need for diagnostic confirmation, treatment facilities, and quality assurance before a national newborn screening program is implemented.
1. Newborn screening involves testing infants shortly after birth for treatable conditions that are not clinically apparent. This allows for early intervention to prevent irreversible damage.
2. Conditions screened for include metabolic disorders, endocrinopathies, hemoglobinopathies, cystic fibrosis, and others. Screening methods include blood tests, hearing tests, and pulse oximetry.
3. Positive results are reported immediately to doctors so treatment can begin, preventing disability or death from conditions like PKU, congenital hypothyroidism, and sickle cell disease.
This document discusses newborn jaundice, which occurs in most newborns. It presents risk factors for severe hyperbilirubinemia such as breastfeeding and prematurity. It describes kernicterus, an irreversible brain condition caused by high bilirubin levels, and recommends screening and treatment protocols to prevent this. The document also discusses phototherapy treatment, nursing research on mothers' experiences with jaundiced infants, and handouts for parents on newborn jaundice.

This randomized controlled trial examined the effectiveness of short-term daily prednisolone doses during infections to reduce relapse rates in patients with frequently relapsing nephrotic syndrome. The study found that the intervention group, who received daily prednisolone for 7 days during infections, had significantly fewer relapses over one year compared to the control group. Specifically, the intervention was associated with a 59% reduction in relapse rates. The number needed to treat was 6, meaning this intervention reduced relapse frequency to less than 3 per year for every 6 patients treated. Overall, short-term daily prednisolone during infections appears effective for reducing relapses in this patient population.
The document summarizes a study that examined the effects of a mnemonic imagery strategy on the prose recall of good and poor readers. In the study, 38 eighth grade students were split into two groups - one that was taught a mnemonic imagery strategy using keywords and illustrations, and a control group that was told to use their own best method. Students were tested immediately and one week later on their recall of central details and incidental details from passages. The results showed that students in the mnemonic imagery group, both good and poor comprehenders, had significantly higher recall of central details compared to the control group. However, both groups performed similarly on recall of incidental details. The study suggests explicitly teaching mnemonic imagery strategies can improve reading
This document discusses several pitfalls in the diagnosis of follicular epithelial proliferations of the thyroid. It addresses challenges in distinguishing hyperplastic follicular lesions from follicular adenomas. It also discusses criteria for diagnosing well-differentiated thyroid carcinomas based on nuclear features for papillary thyroid carcinoma and capsular/vascular invasion for follicular thyroid carcinoma. The document further addresses definitions of capsular and vascular invasion, the significance of extrathyroidal extension, how to define dedifferentiation, and when ancillary tools should be used in diagnosis.
This document summarizes a study that compares how children and adults acquire articles in English as a second language. The study found that both children and adults are influenced by the semantic feature of specificity when using articles. However, adults overextend this and incorrectly use articles in both definite and indefinite contexts, while children only make mistakes in indefinite contexts. The study concludes that both children and adults rely on implicit linguistic knowledge of semantic universals, but adults also develop explicit strategies that lead to overgeneralization of article rules.

This presentation was given at the 2016 Serious Play Conference, hosted by the UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School.
Since little is known about the efficacy of health interventions in a VE, this study, conducted by Duke and Virtual Heroes, constitutes an innovative step in exploring how this type of environment can be suused to facilitate self-management behaviors in those with chronic diseases, in this case, diabetes. This program has good potential to improve care in an easily disseminated model that promotes cost-effective resource utilization.
Research Abstracts Vtrim's online healthy weight management programkmyerson
1) Several studies examined the efficacy of internet-based weight loss programs compared to in-person programs. Results showed that internet programs produced comparable weight loss to in-person programs over 12-18 months.
2) One study directly compared a structured behavioral internet weight loss program (VTrim) to a commercial self-help internet program (eDiets.com) and found that the structured program produced greater weight loss at both 6 and 12 months.
3) Other studies examined features of effective internet programs, finding that dynamic elements providing feedback and social support best predicted weight loss and maintenance. Accurate self-reporting of weight was also found.

Across Australia and globally, the nature and practice of Human Resource Management (HRM) is in a constant state of evolution as organisational forms, management standards, labour markets and whole economies shift, adapt and change. In this assignment you are required to select an organisation, and undertake an investigation and evaluation regarding the HRM practices and policies present in that organisation. Your assignment is thus in two parts. The first section (of approximately 900 words) requires you to account for, and discuss, the ways in which your selected organisation:
· Recruits and inducts new staff
· Manages staff performance and engagement
· Identifies and advances high performing staff
· Ensures that staff operate safely
· Advances a diversity agenda across its staff and management base
· Encourages staff to stay at the organisation
· Resolves disputes and/or negotiates pay and benefits
In the second part of the assignment (approximately 1100 words in length) you should offer informed suggestions, supported by peer-reviewed academic literature (i.e. quality journal articles) on how the organisation can better structure its HRM practices and policies to advance employee performance (such as engagement, wellbeing, safety, commitment etc.) and organisational outcomes (e.g. profit and standing). Your suggestions should be critical and based on evidence, and at least 8 peer-reviewed academic articles should be cited in this section.

Example partnerships found social influence affects weight loss and being on active teams increases physical activity. Additional resources provide information on partnering benefits and research studies.
The document describes a study that explored using iPads and computer-based technology to promote health and wellness for adults with intellectual disabilities. Sixteen participants received weekly behavioral weight loss sessions and accessed internet weight loss resources via iPads over 16 weeks. Overall, participants lost a total of 73.8 pounds, averaging a 4.6 pound reduction per person. Men lost an average of 5.6 pounds each while women lost an average of 3.61 pounds each. The study aims to replicate these procedures with a control group and statistical analysis to measure significant differences in outcomes from the intervention.
Exergaming and health message framing on physical activity beliefsshelly_m
The study examined the impact of exergames (Wii games) and health messages framed using protection motivation theory on children's physical activity beliefs and intentions. A 6-week experiment with 454 children found that playing exergames positively influenced attitudes, self-efficacy, and perceived control, especially when combined with threat-framed health messages. However, coping-framed messages were generally more effective. The findings suggest schools and parents could use exergames to promote physical activity and health messages should be framed to empower rather than threaten children.

The document discusses using the Nintendo Wii for physical and occupational therapy treatments. Studies show the Wii can improve balance in children with Down syndrome ages 10-13 when playing games like soccer heading and tightrope walking for 6 weeks. The Wii also improved static and dynamic balance in children ages 7-12 with poor motor skills when playing balance games for 30 minutes 3 times a week for 6 weeks, but did not transfer skills to other motor tasks. Research also found the Wii can improve upper extremity function in children with cerebral palsy ages 6-15 when playing tennis and boxing games twice a week for 15 minutes each. While the Wii is low cost and enjoyable, its balance measures are not always valid or reliable
Physical activity healthy people 2020 pdfErin Thornton
The Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans (PAG) provides science-based guidelines to help Americans aged 6 and older improve their health through appropriate physical activity. The PAG was first released in 2008 and is part of Healthy People 2020. Healthy People 2020 guidelines recommend that children and adolescents get at least 60 minutes of moderate physical activity per week, while adults aim for 150 minutes of moderate exercise or 75 minutes of vigorous activity per week. However, over 80% of US adults and adolescents do not meet these physical activity guidelines.

The NetFitHealth program will use netball to promote physical activity and healthy lifestyles among young people aged 10-16 in two disadvantaged suburbs of Greater Dandenong, Victoria, Australia. Over 12 months, the program will involve netball clinics, coaching sessions, community events, and education sessions delivered by a team of coaches. Evaluation will include surveys, focus groups, and case studies to assess changes in knowledge, attitudes, behaviors, and the program's impact. The goal is to address low activity levels and sedentary behavior in the target communities.
The SMART study aims to leverage mobile phones, social networks, and the web to promote weight loss among young adults aged 18-35. The study will enroll 400 subjects across four universities in San Diego and assign them to either an intervention or comparison group. The intervention group will use a platform called ThreeTwoMe that incorporates mobile apps, text messages, emails and an existing social network to deliver behavior change strategies for diet, physical activity and weight loss. Key challenges for evaluating the intervention include its evolving nature over time, potential contamination of control subjects, clustering of social networks, and changes to the Facebook platform.
Brazendale 2015 - Maximizing childrens PA using the LET US Play principlesKeith Brazendale
This study compared the physical activity levels of children playing common games with either traditional rules or modified rules based on the LET US Play principles. A total of 267 children participated in 50 physical activity sessions at a summer day camp. Games using LET US Play principles elicited more moderate-to-vigorous physical activity from both boys and girls compared to the same games with traditional rules. The largest increases in physical activity occurred during modified tag games. Overall, more children met the recommended benchmark of 50% time in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity when games incorporated LET US Play principles.

This randomized trial evaluated a home-based intervention to improve household routines associated with childhood obesity among low-income minority families. The intervention used coaching, educational materials, and text messages to increase family meals, child sleep duration, and reduce TV viewing and TVs in bedrooms. At 6-month follow-up, the intervention increased child sleep duration and decreased TV viewing on weekends compared to controls, and lowered child BMI. The intervention did not significantly impact family meals or TVs in bedrooms.
Improving Parenting Skills for Families of Young Children in Pediatric Settin...JAMA Pediatrics
This randomized clinical trial tested the efficacy of providing an evidence-based parenting program (The Incredible Years) to parents of young children with disruptive behaviors in pediatric settings. Parents assigned to the intervention group completed 10 weekly parenting sessions led by study psychologists and pediatric staff. Compared to those on a waiting list, parents who received the intervention reported fewer disruptive child behaviors, improved parenting skills, and less negative parent-child interactions both immediately after and up to 12 months following the program. The results support delivering evidence-based parenting programs in pediatric practices to help address early disruptive behaviors.
Music to Reduce Pain and Distress in the Pediatric Emergency DepartmentJAMA Pediatrics
A randomized clinical trial examined the effects of music versus standard care on pain and distress in 42 children ages 3-11 undergoing IV placement in a pediatric emergency department. Children in the music group listened to music via speakers during the procedure, while the control group received standard care. The study found that music was associated with less increase in self-reported pain from before to after the procedure compared to controls. Among children who showed signs of distress, music also resulted in significantly less increase in observed distress levels during the procedure versus standard care. However, no significant differences were found between groups for objective measures of distress across all children or physiological and parent-reported measures.
This study examined the effects of flaxseed supplementation on lipid levels in 32 children and adolescents with hypercholesterolemia. Participants consumed either muffins and bread containing ground flaxseed or placebo muffins and bread for 4 weeks. The study found that flaxseed supplementation resulted in a decrease in HDL cholesterol and an increase in triglyceride levels compared to the placebo. The use of flaxseed supplementation did not provide benefits and may adversely affect the lipid profile in children with hypercholesterolemia.
Adverse Childhood Experiences and Child Health in Early AdolescenceJAMA Pediatrics
The study examined the relationship between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) like abuse, neglect, and household dysfunction, and health problems in early adolescence. Over 90% of adolescents had experienced at least one ACE. Exposure to multiple ACEs was strongly associated with poor health, illness, and somatic concerns. Recent ACE exposure had the strongest links to poor adolescent health outcomes. The findings suggest that reducing ACEs could improve adolescent and lifelong health.

Corp) and 1 active sports game at their second treatment session and
received a second active game halfway through the program.
– Participants in the program-only condition were given an Xbox, Kinect,
and 2 games at the completion of the 16-week program.

Results
• Program and active gaming participants exhibited significant increases in
MVPA (mean [SD], 7.4 [2.7] min/d) and VPA (2.8 [0.9] min/d) at week 16
(P < .05).
• MVPA and VPA declined or remained unchanged in participants in the
program-only control group.
• MVPA mean (SD) net difference = 8.0 (3.8) min/d (P = .04).
• VPA mean (SD) net difference = 3.1 (1.3) min/d (P = .02).
• Participants in both conditions exhibited significant reductions in percentage
overweight and BMI z score at week 16.
• Program and active gaming participants exhibited significantly greater
reductions in percentage overweight (mean [SD], −10.9% [1.6%] vs −5.5%
[1.5%]; P = .02) and BMI z score (−0.25 [0.03] vs −0.11 [0.03]; P = .001).

Comment
• First study to use a randomized controlled trial study design to delineate the
effects of active gaming on habitual physical activity among obese children.
• The addition of active gaming to an established community-based pediatric
weight management program resulted in significant increases in MVPA
among obese children.
• Consistent with the results of a previous evaluation of the JOIN for ME
pediatric weight loss program, all participants, regardless of study
allocation, exhibited significant and clinically meaningful reductions in
relative weight.
• Providing participants an active gaming console and a game resulted in a
50% greater reduction in relative weight and BMI z score.

• The study used a state-of-the-art objective measure of physical activity, thus
eliminating the substantial recall bias and measurement error associated
with self-report methods.
• The study examined the impact of active gaming in the context of a fully
scalable, community-based pediatric weight management program
administered in schools and YMCAs. Thus, the potential for translating
these findings to other settings and population groups is high.
