This document summarizes the coordination of maternal and child health activities in 10 counties in Kenya through the Right Start Project. It outlines progress made in reducing child mortality and increasing access to skilled birth attendants. However, there are still high rates of preventable morbidity and mortality due to barriers to quality healthcare. The Right Start Project aims to address these challenges through partnership-driven activities like capacity building, health systems strengthening, and high impact interventions. The goal is improving maternal, newborn and child health and nutrition outcomes through coordinated efforts across 10 counties.
The study aimed to determine the breastfeeding practices of women in paid employment and the factors that affect compliance to optimal breastfeeding practices
Improving mid-day meal delivery and encouraging micronutrient fortification t...POSHAN
- The document summarizes a study on the impact of micronutrient fortification of mid-day meals provided to school children in Odisha, India.
- The study randomly assigned 148 schools to receive either regular mid-day meals (control), micronutrient-fortified meals (MNM), or MNM with high-intensity monitoring. It measured the impact on meal quality, child health outcomes, and learning.
- The results found that providing MNM significantly increased zinc and vitamin A in meals but had no effect on child health measures. High-intensity monitoring improved hemoglobin levels potentially by better implementing an iron-folic acid supplementation program, while MNM crowded out the supplementation program.

National-level actions can help strengthen nutrition services delivered by health systems. This includes developing a national nutrition strategy, strengthening leadership and governance, developing implementation plans, and including capacity building and ongoing monitoring in national plans. Convergence between health and nutrition services is important, as seen in India's National Nutrition Strategy which links nutritional interventions to essential health services. Kenya also developed a National Capacity Development Framework to comprehensively address capacity needs at multiple levels. However, challenges in establishing community-facility linkages and limited dedicated nutrition budgets remain barriers to sustainability.

Priotizing Behaviors for Scalable, Intregrated and Quality -- AakessonCORE Group
This document discusses effective strategies for integrating nutrition-sensitive agriculture practices. It recommends prioritizing a few key practices that clearly contribute to nutrition outcomes based on context and stakeholder needs. Formative research should be used to identify which practices are most feasible and likely to be adopted. Behavior change models can then help effectively promote the priority practices by linking them to tangible benefits and social identities. Community videos modeling joint decision making have helped promote improved chicken and egg production in some areas. Overall, the strategies aim to keep integrated programs practical while allowing for adaptation based on different community needs.

The document summarizes Kenya's experience scaling up its NICHE program, which provides cash transfers plus nutrition counseling. It began as a pilot combining cash with counseling for pregnant/lactating mothers in Kitui County. Results showed treatment households had better nutrition/care practices. This led to scaling up under KSEIP across several counties. NICHE now targets pregnant/lactating women and children under 2 receiving cash transfers with extra cash and counseling. Community health volunteers provide counseling while protecting positive parenting sessions. Early results are promising but continued advocacy is needed for multi-sector coordination and funding to fully realize benefits like improved child development outcomes.

Sun movement in indonesia brussels nutrition seminarSUN_Movement
Indonesia has high levels of malnutrition compared to other Southeast Asian countries. Stunting affects over 30% of children in every province. Causes include poor infant and young child feeding practices and sanitation issues. To address this, Indonesia launched a Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) Movement in 2013. The movement aims to coordinate cross-sectoral nutrition actions and bring various stakeholders together under new leadership structures. It also develops policies and guidelines, advocates for nutrition, and monitors progress using national surveys and routine community data. Critical components for success include strong leadership, coordination, funding, capacity building, and ensuring nutrition is part of development plans.

This document discusses using satellite data and crop modeling to forecast crop yields in Mozambique. It summarizes previous studies conducted in the US, Argentina, and Brazil to test a remote sensing crop growth and simulation model (RS-CGSM) for predicting corn and soybean yields. For Mozambique, additional data is needed on crop cultivars, management practices, planting and harvest seasons. It also describes using earth observation data and machine learning models to forecast crop yields and conditions across many countries as part of the GEOGLAM program, though this is currently only implemented in South Africa for Africa. Finally, it mentions a production efficiency model for estimating yield from satellite estimates of gross primary production.

A Look at Global Rice Markets: Export Restrictions, El Niño, and Price Controls

Rice is the most consumed cereal in Senegal, accounting for 34% of total cereal consumption. Per capita consumption is 80-90kg annually, though there is an urban-rural divide. While domestic production has doubled between 2010-2021, it still only meets 40% of demand. As a result, Senegal imports around 1 million tons annually, mainly from India and Thailand. Several public policies aim to incentivize domestic production and stabilize prices, though rice remains highly exposed to international price shocks due to its importance in consumption and reliance on imports.

This document provides an overview of the Political Economy and Policy Analysis (PEPA) Sourcebook virtual book launch. It summarizes the purpose and features of the PEPA Sourcebook, which is a guide for generating evidence to inform national food, land, and water policies and strategies. The Sourcebook includes frameworks, analytical tools, case studies, and step-by-step guidance for conducting political economy and policy analysis. It aims to address the current fragmentation in approaches and lack of external validity by integrating different frameworks and methods into a single resource. The launch event highlighted example frameworks and case studies from the Sourcebook that focus on various policy domains like food and nutrition, land, and climate and ecology.
- Rice exports from Myanmar have exceeded 2 million tons per year since 2019-2020, except for 2020-2021 during the peak of the pandemic. Exports through seaports now account for around 80% of total exports.
- Domestic rice prices in Myanmar have closely tracked Thai export prices, suggesting strong linkages between domestic and international markets.
- Simulations of a 10% decrease in rice productivity and a 0.4 million ton increase in exports in 2022-2023 resulted in a 33% increase in domestic prices, a 5% fall in production, and a 10% drop in consumption, with poor households suffering the largest declines in rice consumption of 12-13%.
