3. Dance, Music and Festivals of Tripura
Music and dances are the integral part of culture of Tripura. Musical instruments like Kham,
Sumui, Sarinda, Chongpreng, Dangdu and Cymbals are very popular among Tripuri people.
Tripura has also given us musicians like Hemanta Jamatia. He was awarded the highest Honour in
the field of music by the Government of India's Sangeet Natak Academy.
Folk dances like Hozagiri, Garia, Maimita, Masak Sumani, Lebang Boomani, Bijhu, Hai-
Hak, Sangrai are prominent among Tripuri people and are performed by several tribes.
Among these, folk dances like Garia and Hai-Hak are performed to worship the local gods. During
festivals, Hozagiri, Bizhu and Sangrai are performed by Tripuri people. During the harvest
seasons, Lebang Boomani is performed.
Tripura witness and celebrates many age-old festivals like Garia puja, Kharchi puja,
Poush Sankranti and Neermahal water festival.
Garia puja is a harvest festival celebrated during April month. Kharchi puja is a hindu festival
which involves worship of 14 gods. Apart from these, Neermahal water festival is most famous
because of its boat race in Rudrasagar lake.
5. Handicrafts, Dresses and
Sculptures of Tripura
• Tripuris have their own traditional dresses. The dress for women for the lower
half of the body is called Rigwnai in Tripuri and for the upper half of the body
cloth has two parts Risa and Rikutu. Risa covers the chest part and the Rikutu
covers whole of the upper half of the body.
• Male used to wear Rikutu for the lower half and Kamchwlwi Borok for the
upper half but now-a-days very few people wear these traditional dresses. The
male have adopted the modern dress of international style Gafta.
• The craftsmen of Tripura are highly skilled in crafting excellent handicrafts.
Some of the attractive handicrafts of the state are room divider, decorated wall
panels, silver jewellery, lamps, furniture of cane and various ornamental
articles.
• The land of Tripura produces abundant bamboo and cane which are used to
make different types of handicrafts. The tribes of Tripura make their own
clothes with great colour combinations and designs.
• Unakoti, Pilak and Devtamura are historic sites where large collections of stone
carvings and rock sculptures are noted. These sculptures represent a rare artistic
fusion of traditional religions and tribal influence.
