A fad is a product that has little, if
any, utility but is characterized by a
quick rise in sales and popularity
followed by a quick decline in sales
and popularity.

A fad is a product that has little, if

• Tamagochi Pets
FADS
A fad is an intense but short-lived
fashion. It is a widely-shared enthusiasm
for something, especially one that is
short-lived. It is a temporary fashion, a
craze, interest, or activity that people
follow enthusiastically, but lasts for a
period of time.
SPOTTING A TREND
Someone or something
starts or causes a trend.
A person who starts a
trend is called
TRENDSETTER.
The individual’s action has
attracted attention, earned
acceptance, and create interest
and influence on people whose
numbers keeps increasing as days
go by.
The act or event is something
different from what is currently and it
becomes “the next big thing”. It
demonstrates an unaccelerated
spread in various sectors and areas
and creates a deep wide scope of
influence on different sectors and the
environment. It leads to change.
(Urgel, 2017)
According to futurists (a futurist
is one who studies and predicts the
future especially based on current
trends) Rehn and Lindkvist (2013),
Trendspotter is a person who
identifies and makes predictions about
developing trends in the culture at
large or in a particular field (such as
fashion).
According to them this
should be differentiated from
cool-hunting which is a hunt
for those that will become
popular before they become
popular.
Trend analysis is
trendspotting but it extends this
into developing future scenarios.
To follow a trend, one must not
only be conscious of what is
currently happening but be wise
enough to predict the future.
(Urgel, 2017)
The Fundamental
Elements of
Trend
We’re all human. Trends – and
behavior more broadly – are
ultimately rooted in our basic,
fundamentals, rarely-if-ever-
changing human needs, wants and
desires. For examples: creativity,
self-improvement, safety, status.
Basic Needs
Identifying these basic needs and
desires isn’t rocket science or even
deep social science! They are the forces
that have been shaping personal and
social relations for centuries if not
millennia. Think about the emotions and
passions that drive characters in the
great works of literature.
Basic Needs
Or just listen to popular music, or watch
any trashy movie. The same themes
crop up again and again, precisely
because they are so universally relevant
and timeless. Identifying underlying
human needs is central to spotting
and/or understanding consumer trends.
Basic Needs
On the other hand, there are no
trends without change. Savvy and
switched-on business professionals
constantly ask ‘what’s changing?’
and look at how it might be possible
to service people’s basic human
needs and wants in novel, exciting –
better – ways.
Drivers Of Change
To analyze change, think in terms of Shifts
and Triggers. Shifts are the long-term, macro
changes (such as urban transition, aging
populations and climate change) that play
out across years or even decades. While not
consumer trends themselves, these shifts do
and will continue to shape both the nature
and direction of consumer trends.
Drivers Of Change

Shifts and Triggers.
Drivers Of Change
Shifts are the long-term, macro changes
(such as urban transition, aging
populations and climate change) that
play out across years or even decades.
While not consumer trends themselves,
these shifts do and will continue to
shape both the nature and direction of
consumer trends.
Drivers Of Change
Triggers are more immediate changes
that drive the emergence of a trend.
These can include specific technologies,
political events, economic shocks,
environmental incidents, and more.
Drivers Of Change
Innovations aren’t trends. But
without examples of customer-
facing innovations tapping into it,
a trend can’t be said to exist
fully (it’s either a futurist’s flight
of fancy or an as-yet-unvalidated
opportunity).
Innovations
You can’t identify a trend for more
irreverent, ‘human brands’, without
businesses like Ben & Jerry’s or Old Spice
delighting customers. You can’t describe the
rise of the ‘on-demand economy’ without
the existence and rapid growth of services
like Uber or Instacart. You can’t have a zoo
without animals!
Innovations
So, the third element of every trend
is innovations: the startups, new
products, services, experiences and
campaigns that are resolving points
of customer tension, and creating
new levels of customer expectation.

LET’S DO THIS!
A future’s wheel is designed to examine
consequences from the use of technology or a
future trend. Students are frequently made
aware of climate and energy alternatives and
choices, but seldom are required to think
about the consequences of those choices. The
futures wheel is a good introduction to
futuristic thinking in that the students must
project possibilities into the future.
Procedure:
1. Near the center of a large piece of manila
paper, draw your own innovation or trend and
draw a circle or box around it.
2. 2. Consider what might happen (good or bad) if
the trend were to actually take place. Write
each of these effects around the central trend.
The initial reactions are called first order
consequences. They are indicated by single
lines connecting the center trend.
Procedure:
3. Consider the possible effects of each of the first
order consequences. Draw and connect each
secondary effect proposed with two lines between
it and the first order to which it relates.

year student of
Philosophy at the University of San

about to go to the university, he came
across a boy playing a yo-yo. As he
further looked around, he saw few
more kids playing that same toy and

He was wondering that that toy was

and he was right.
In fact, in just a few weeks’ time, it faded.

Modern Philosophy, his professor starts

This made Karl Marx a 2. _____ since he

end of the class, John’s professor gave
them an assignment. They were asked to
