The document provides details for a proposed ambient music video featuring the song "Matilda" by alt-J, remixed by Johnson Somerset. The video aims to showcase harmony between nature and humanity in a variety of natural and urban environments, using techniques like time-lapse and slow motion. Shots would start with natural beauty and build to man-made structures, showing appreciation for things often taken for granted. The style will be serious to induce a sense of amazement and awe through a surreal atmosphere.
1. Treatment
Working Title: Matilda (Johnson Somerset Remix) – alt-J
Proposed Duration: 7:20 minutes
Completion Deadline: 28th March 2013
Target Audience:
This music video is aimed at those who enjoy Ambient music. Perhaps ambient music veterans who
enjoyed atmospheric sounds from artists such as Brian Eno or the electronic qualities that Boards of
Canada incorporate in their music or ambient novices seeking a more contemporary sound. Those who
enjoy popular music may also be targeted as alt-J are a very diverse, upcoming ‘folkstep’ band. The song
Matilda, however, has been remixed into a very ambient fashion by Johnson Somerset, which is the song
we are using for the music video.
Background: Why are you creating these videos? What is the aim / purpose?
We are creating this video because there seems to be a definite niche in the market for ambient music
videos. It would seem that because they rarely feature on the television, there is no need for videos.
However, we believe that ambient music can be reintroduced to the music market to become popular
again if it has the opportunity to be aired on popular music television channels.
Research: Locations, props, applicable laws, etc.
We intend to film a variety of both natural and urban environments in a documentary style manner –
therefore the use of props will probably not be applicable. Places such as fields, forests, lakes, nature
reserves, towns, cities i.e. London or local towns that are well populated etc will be used.
Synopsis: Think of a blurb on the back of a book... Give a brief explanation of what is going to happen in
your video, from the start to the end.
The music video is intended to connote a sense of harmony in the world we live in between nature and
man (as opposed to drawing on the negatives of nature vs. man like most representations of the concept)
in a very atmospheric way using a variety of shots. We will be starting with the most natural beauties
building up the most manmade beauties in the world. For example, shots such as a time-lapse of the
sunrise, someone walking down a road, then a panning shot of the forest, then perhaps a lake, then a small
town, then a shot of London at night time showing beauties of all the lights and scenery, with a mix of
shots of nature and man in between. The video is intended to make the audience appreciate the world we
live in and realise the beauties of the things the human race take for granted. To enhance this, a lot of time
lapse and slow motion effects will be used, alongside film grain effects that will build into a very high
definition visual appearance to also gradually build up the sense of awe that we intend to encourage in the
audience.
Style: Serious? Funny? Sarcastic? Sad? What moods are going to be present within the videos? What is
the atmosphere of the video going to be?
The style of the music video will be serious. We want to induce a sense of amazement, appreciation and
awe in the audience for the planet. We want to inspire people to realise the beauty of the planet’s nature
and the amazing rate at which we as a species have grown and developed. The atmosphere will be very
surreal and almost fantastic despite the fact that all of the shots we use will be of real things.
