The Goodwin Seven are a set of seven features of music videos and every music video is
supposed to have some of these seven features
The Goodwin Seven:
• Music videos demonstrate certain genre characteristic
• There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals
• There is a relationship between music and visuals
• The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close-ups of the artist
• The artist may develop motifs or iconography that recur across their work
• There is frequent reference to the notion of ‘looking’ and particularly voyeuristic treatment
of the female body
• There are often inter textual references – mostly of film, TV and pop culture.
3. 3. THERE IS A RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MUSIC
AND VISUALS
In the video to Delta heavy’s ‘Get By’ there is a strong link between the music and the actions
within the video, for example the Rubix cube scene the colours represent the wave form of the
actual music. Also, the shots with the hammer, the hammer falls when the bass beat happens.

In the video to ‘Saviour’ by Rise Against you see a lot of scenes with the band playing and
this is a characteristic of rock/metal music videos.
