Transport: from a
geographical, perspective and
Accessibility and tourism
transport
PRESENTED BY: GENEVIEVE L. CAVAIANI
Transportation:
 Transport deals with time and distance
 Transport facilitates the movement with respect to place and location and
provides the essential link
 It enables the spatial interaction between different tourist generating regions and
destination regions.
 Flow of people from generating region to destination is almost impossible without
transport.
Geographical perspective:
 Travel occurs to satisfy human desire for spatial movement and transport
facilitates the process of movement that has economic and budgetary costs
 According to page (1994) transport results from a desire for mobility and travel,
and the provision of different modes of transport aims to facilitate the efficient
movement of goods and people.
 Distance has been a bottleneck in the evolution of tourism in many destinations
 Proximity of tourist generating countries with high travel propensity has been an
advantages for destination in-attracting international tourist
 The distance has a geographical perspective, spatial differentiation is used to
indicate spatial interaction between two places, which is the basis of
transportation.
 According to Ullman(1980) three major reasons and transport development:
1. Complementary
2. Intervening opportunities
3. Transferability or friction of distance
Complementary
 In one place, there exists desire to travel, and in the other place there exists the ability to
satisfy that desire
 A transport system will link there two COMPLEMENTARY of demand and supply will
produce interaction between these areas.
 Complementary exists between origin and destinations regions, intervening opportunities
may be possible due to competing attractions.
 Though on destination has the necessary attractions and facilities to satisfy the needs and
wants of tourist from a generating region, other destinations can also offer similar attractions
and facilities.
 Some tourists may visit other destinations as well, even if a particular destination has the
needed services and facilities
INTERVENING
 Opportunities exits in terms of tourist travel
TRANSFERABILITY:
 Friction of distance does matter in tourism
 Refers to the cost of overcoming the distance between those two places.
 If the time and money costs of reaching a destination are high , then even perfect
complementary and lack of intervening opportunities cannot ensure travel to that
destination.
 In tourism, spatial interaction has take place and it should have good
complementarity, less intervening opportunities and low friction of distance.
Leiper(1990) specifies the geographical
aspect of tourism transport
 Geographical elements constitute a fundamental component of the system.
1. Sub-element, traveler generating region (TGR) is the area where the tourist are
emerging from and is often referred to as the tourism market. The tourist
destination region represents the END of tourism, which the tourist is ultimately
intending to visit. The tourist moves from Tourist Destination region (TDR) via the
transit route region (TRR).
2. TDR attracts the tourists to move there to visit attractions. PULL of the
destination energizes the whole tourism system and demand for travel in
generating region. The primarily focus of tourism transportation is in the TRR the
rest of the parts also have significance in the tourism transportation.
 The distance to cover in TRR is important for the tourist in selecting the mode of
transport, a determinant in the accessibility of the destination and
in the ability of the destination to attract tourists
 Tourism transport commences from TGR and passes through TRR into TDR:
transport becomes more complex with a more multimodal transport system.
 Geographically tourism transport varies and different modes of transport will be
used as part of the process of tourism movement from origin area to destination,
visiting within the destination and then returning to the origin area.
ACCESSIBILTY AND TOURISM
TRANSPORT
 Role of transportation is basically related to accessibility.
 Renders a tourist destination accessible to their markets in the tourist generating
regions
 It is one of the primary elements of tourism and the relationship of tourism with
transport is generally conceptualized in terms of accessibility
 Good accessibility is an integral characteristics of the overall competitiveness of
destination.
 Along with distance the amount of time needed and the ease in reaching a
destination.
 Regions and destinations that are inaccessible or not well served with transport
facilities are unlikely to develop as popular tourist locations.
 Transport infrastructure within the destination is another important factor of
accessibility
 Availability of transport services is also a factor features of transport services
including frequency, convenience, comfort and types are important in determining
the touristic accessibility of a destination.
 Provision adequate, safe, comfortable, fast, convenient and cheaper public
transport is a prerequisite for mass market tourism
 Transportation is a major segment of the tourism industry, particularly in terms od
employment and revenue generation.
Aspect to consider Major roles of
Transportation for a destination:
 Basic requirement
 Catalyst in the growth of tourism
 Determinant in destination success
 Component of tourist attractions
 Value proposition for destination marketing
 Determinant in tourist experience and satisfaction
 Recreational option
 Special interest tourism option
 Business and economic opportunities
PARAMETERS IS APPLIED IF
CONSIDERING EFFECIENCY:
 Mode of services
 Efficient intermodal transport system
 Number of schedules
 Frequency of services
 Network
 Ease of booking
 Availability of information
 Speed
 Punctuality
 Reliability
 Customer service
 Customer care
 Comfort
 Facilities
 Ride comfort
 Safety records
 security
TRANSPORTING DESTINATIONS HAVE TO
ENSURE:
 Quality vehicles
 Provision of an integrated, efficient
multimodal transport system
 Safety and security
 Good connectivity
 Quality transport infrastructure
 Proficient travel and tourism information
services
 Proper signboards and guidance
 Efficient and quality taxi system
 Efficient drivers/ couriers
 Fair rate system
 Provision of experiential and recreational
transport
 Provision of efficient online services and
GPS system
 Use of professional vehicle tracking and
management system
Activity
 MAKE A CREATIVE AND CLEAN SKETCH OF ORIGIN OF TOURIST TO THE
DESTINATION THEN LABEL EACH TRANSPORT USES
a. Tina is from Talisay City Cebu then her destination is to go to Manila through air
based transport then she is staying in City of Dreams of Hotel aside from that she
visited SM Mall of Asia , Star City and Dine in Aristocrat Restaurant.
b. Jason is from Labangon, Cebu City and his destination is to Boracay, Caticlan Iloilo
but he is going to cross through water based transport but he needs to cross first Cebu
to Dumaguete then Dumaguete to Bacolod then need to crossed Iloilo City after
that he need to find a transport to go help him go further to reach Caticlan, Aklan
before crossing the island Boracay Island.
