Background: Many cities across the world are beginning to shift their mobility solution away from the private cars and towards more environmentally friendly and citizen-focused means. Hamburg, Oslo, Helsinki, and Madrid have recently announced their plans to become (partly) private car free cities. Other cities like Paris, Milan, Chengdu, Masdar, Dublin, Brussels, Copenhagen, Bogota, and Hyderabad have measures that aim at reducing motorized traffic including implementing car free days, investing in cycling infrastructure and pedestrianization, restricting parking spaces and considerable increases in public transport provision. Such plans and measures are particularly implemented with the declared aim of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. These reductions are also likely to benefit public health.

Wipro - Transport Initiatives

The Sussex Community NHS Trust has taken several steps to reduce emissions from its fleet vehicles and employee driving. This includes replacing diesel cars with more fuel-efficient petrol models, setting stricter emissions limits for leased vehicles, and launching initiatives to encourage employees to use lower-emission options like pool vehicles, public transport, cycling and teleconferencing. As a result, the Trust has reduced business mileage by nearly 1 million miles and cut fleet carbon emissions by 19% since 2011. It has also worked with partners and received outside funding to support additional electric vehicles and charging infrastructure. - The demand for transport is going to get several times greater globally as 3 rd world countries economies improve
- Anthropogenic – man made. CO2 is not the only greenhouse gas but is the one that is relevant to the transport sector
- Transport is 23% of total but this excludes international aviation and shipping
- Domestic aviation 0.9MtC, international aviation 9.3MtC
- HGVs and vans are important as cars
- Effects of improvements in engine and fuel technologies recently… this is New Cars not the current car fleet
- International Aviation … the elephant in the cupboard
- Even if we cut other transport emissions we will see a substantial growth in aviation which has a doubling effect on GHG because of Reactive Forcing effects of contrails producing extra water vapour in the atmosphere (water vapour is a greenhouse gas) and NOx impact on ozone in atmosphere
