DEFINITION
Translation criticism is an essential link between
translation theory and its practice
The area of assessment criteria is one where a
more expert writer (a marker of a translation
examination or a reviser of a professional
translation) addresses a less expert reader.

− A translation may be evaluated by various authorities
(1) The reviser employed by the firm or the translation company;
(2) The head of section or of the company;
(3) The client;
(4) The professional critic of a translation or the teacher marking one;
(5) Finally, by the readership of the published work

5. − Assessment criteria – Accuracy, faithfulness, style
• The knowledge of the grammar of the source language plus the
knowledge of vocabulary, as well as a good understanding of the text to
be translated.
• The ability of the translators to reconstitute the source language text into
the target language.
• The translation should capture the style or manner and convey the
message of the original text.

6. − Assessment criteria – Functionalists’
‘The transmission of the predominant function of the ST is the determining
factor by which the TT is judged’
1. The TT of an informative text should transmit the full referential or
conceptual content of the ST. The translation should be in ‘plain prose’,
without redundancy and with the use of explicitation when required.
2. The TT of an expressive text should transmit the aesthetic and artistic
form of the text types and text varieties
3. The TT of an operative text should produce the desired response in the
TT receiver
4. Audio-medial texts require what Reiss calls the ‘supplementary’ method,
supplementing written words with visual images and music

7. Newmark’s translation criticism model
1. A brief analysis of the SL text stressing its intention and its functional
aspects;
2. The translator's interpretation of the SL text's purpose, his translation
method;
3. A selective but representative detailed comparison of the translation with
the original;
4. An evaluation of the translation – (a) in the translator’s terms, (b) in the
critic’s terms;
5. Where appropriate, an assessment of the likely place of the translation in
the target language, culture or discipline.

8. THE LAST LEAF
When it was light enough Johnsy, the merciless, commanded that the shade be raised.
The ivy leaf was still there.
Johnsy lay for a long time looking at it. And then she called to Sue, who was stirring her chicken broth over the gas
stove.
"I've been a bad girl, Sudie", said Johnsy. "Something has made that last leaf stay there to show me how wicked I was.
It is a sin to want to die. You may bring me a little broth now, and some milk with a little port in it, and—no; bring me a
hand-mirror first, and then pack some pillows about me, and I will sit up and watch you cook".
An hour later she said.
"Sudie, someday I hope to paint the Bay of Naples."
The doctor came in the afternoon, and Sue had an excuse to go into the hallway as he left.
"Even chances", said the doctor, taking Sue's thin, shaking hand in his. "With good nursing you'll win. And now I must
see another case I have downstairs. Behrman, his name is—some kind of an artist, I believe. Pneumonia, too. He is an
old, weak man, and the attack is acute. There is no hope for him; but he goes to the hospital to-day to be made more
comfortable.”

9. The next day the doctor said to Sue: “She’s out of danger. You’ve won. Nutrition and care now—that’s all.”
And that afternoon Sue came to the bed where Johnsy lay, contentedly knitting a very blue and very useless
woolen shoulder scarf, and put one arm around her, pillows and all.
“I have something to tell you, white mouse”, she said. “Mr. Behrman died of pneumonia to-day in the
hospital. He was ill only two days. The janitor found him on the morning of the first day in his room
downstairs helpless with pain. His shoes and clothing were wet through and icy cold. They couldn’t imagine
where he had been on such a dreadful night. And then they found a lantern, still lighted, and a ladder that
had been dragged from its place, and some scattered brushes, and a palette with green and yellow colors
mixed on it, and—look out the window, dear, at the last ivy leaf on the wall. Didn’t you wonder why it
never fluttered or moved when the wind blew? Ah, darling, it’s Behrman’s masterpiece—he painted it there
the night that the last leaf fell.”

13. 1.1. THE AUTHOR’S PURPOSE
O. Henry is famous for his short stories and The Last Leaf is a very
popular one, which was published in 1907 in the collection The Trimmed
Lamp and Other Stories. In The Last Leaf by O. Henry, we have the theme
of commitment, sacrifice, friendship, compassion, hope and dedication.
At the same time, we can also feel the moral lesson of the story and the
statement that the author portrayed: “Don’t stop hoping”.

The readership can be of a large population. Any educated readers who
like reading books, especially for those already fond of O. Henry stories
would certainly be interested in reading The Last Leaf. These readers may

Purpose of the translator: Expressing ideas & languages with maximum accuracy
→ readers understand the content of the text with as much detail as the source text.
Newmark’s: “Faithful translation attempts to reproduce the precise contextual meaning
of the original within the constraints of the TL grammatical structures. It ‘transfers’
cultural words and preserves the degree of grammatical and lexical ‘abnormality’
(deviation from SL norms) in the translation. It attempts to be completely faithful to the
intentions and the text realization of the SL writer”.
