What is TSP
(Transit Signal Priority)?
Transit Signal Priority
TSP
Transit signal priority systems use sensors to detect
approaching transit vehicles and modify signal timings
to improve transit performance
A tool to help make transit service more reliable, faster,
and more cost effective. It has little impact on general
traffic and is an inexpensive way to make transit more
competitive with the automobile.

HOW TSP Works
Transit Signal
Preemption
Preemption interrupts
the normal signal
operation process for
special events
(railroad crossing,
emergency vehicles)

Types of Transit Signal Priority
The TPS system can be categorised in several ways
based on its function and uses, some of them are
pointed bellow.
▪ Passive priority
▪ Early green (red truncation)
▪ Green extension
▪ Actuated transit phase
▪ Phase insertion
▪ Phase rotation
▪ Adaptive/real-time control 4
Benefits for Transit Signal Priority
System
Transit Signal Priority widely proffered to manage
metropolitan and urban traffic. TSP significantly
reduces transit delay for emergency and public
transport vehicles. Studies say TSP reduces travel
time around 10% and reduces delay up to 50% for
bus during the rush hours.

Benefits for Transit Signal Priority
System
EMTRAC system has been used throughout North
America to help first-response and transit vehicles
get to their destination both quickly and safely.
