This document summarizes a village survey conducted by students guided by Prof. S.C. Mahapatra and Prof. P.K. Bhowmick. The students visited Chitripur village in East Midnapore district to understand the social, economic, and educational conditions of villagers. They surveyed 10 families and found that most villagers rely on agriculture for income, though some have non-agricultural jobs. Educational levels are rising but the village only has a primary school. Access to water and technology is improving but opportunities remain for women's empowerment and small businesses related to animal products. The student group presented their findings and gained valuable experience understanding rural life in India.

6. The men to women ratio
is almost 1:1.
The women are mostly
housewives.
There is a large scope of
women empowerment.

domestic animal and is
mostly used for
Agricultural purposes.
No commercial use of
Animal products.
There is a large scope of
introducing small scale
industry producing
products derived from
animals.

9. Agricultural Non agricultural Homestead Waterbody
Most of the land available
to families are used for
agricultural purposes.
Some families do have non-
agricultural land.
But, those family already
have their heads working at
IIT Kharagpur as staffs.
So, gradually the people are
moving away from
agriculture.

11. Out of the 10 families we surveyed, two
of them had people working at IIT
Kharagpur.
The income they received totaled to be
more than the total income of the 10
families, received through agriculture.
People are moving towards education
and are taking up jobs other than
agriculture.
But, the village only has a primary
school and children have to go to other
villages to study.
The income distribution is also very
uneven. We found that one family had no
annual income and they ate what they
grew.

12. The main source of water
is tap.
But, the water flow is
slow and is not regular.
Some families own
motors also, for pumping
water from ponds.

13. All of the families we
surveyed had their children in
schools.
Some of the families have
well educated individuals
working at IIT.
The elder people were less
educated.
Surprisingly, we found that
the male and female had
almost the same level of
education.
Yet, all the families we
surveyed had non working
females.

14. Almost all of the families have television or radio.
Although, none of them take newspapers.
Agriculture is largely through traditional methods. No tractors
used for cultivation purposes.
Two of the families we surveyed even had computers.
The people we surveyed are well versed with day to day
technologies.
