Production costs in Chennai are 11% lower than in China, contributing to Chennai emerging as a top 10 global manufacturing center. 42% of India's passenger cars and 35% of auto components are produced in Chennai. Major automakers like Ford, Hyundai, BMW, Renault-Nissan have plants in Chennai, exporting nearly half their production to over 50 international markets. Industry groups like CII and ACMA support the region's growing automobile and auto components sectors.

• Industry-friendly government policies, proximity to the port, a
traditional engineering base are factors that have made the City the
‘Auto Hub’ of India.
• The total cost of manufacturing in Chennai in India is much cheaper
than even in China, by over 11 per cent in net productivity value
(NPV) terms.
