- 2. Introduction The idea of the tragic hero was first defined by the ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle based on his study of Greek drama. Aristotle A Greek Philosopher. A Student of Plato. Teacher of Alexander the Great. What is a tragedy ? -It is a play, novel, or other narrative in which the main character comes to a sorrowful end. It depicts serious and important events.
- 3. Definition The term hero is derived from a Greek word that means a person who faces adversity, or demonstrates courage, in the face of danger. However, sometimes he faces downfall as well. When a hero confronts downfall, he is recognized as a tragic hero or protagonist. Aristotle defines a tragic hero as “a person who must evoke a sense of pity and fear in the audience. He is considered a man of misfortune that comes to him through error of judgment.” A tragic hero’s downfall evokes feelings of pity and fear among the audience.

- 9. Characteristics of a tragic hero by Aristotle Flaw or error of judgment (Hamartia) A reversal of fortune (Peripeteia) The character's fate must be greater than deserved. Excessive Pride (Hubris) The discovery or recognition that the reversal was brought about by the hero's own actions (Anagnorisis) Feelings of pity and fear felt by the audience, for the inevitable downfall of the protagonist.
