Toyota's origins began in 1924 when Sakichi Toyoda invented an automatic loom. The patent was later sold, generating capital for automobile development. Toyota began automobile production in 1933 with the A1 passenger car and G1 Truck. By 1937 Toyota Motor Company was established as an independent company. Over subsequent decades Toyota expanded its model lineup and production facilities internationally, eventually becoming a leading global automaker, though natural disasters in 2011 disrupted operations.

4. 1940-1950
• From September 1947, Toyota's small-
sized vehicles were sold under the name
"Toyopet“.
• The first vehicle sold under this name
was the Toyopet SA.
• It also included vehicles such as
the Toyopet SB light truck, Toyopet stout
light truck, Toyopet crown, Toyopet
master, and Toyopet Corona.

5. 1950-1960
• In 1957 the name " Toyopet ",
was not well received in America
due to connotations of toys and
pets.

6. 1960-1970
• By the early 1960s, the US had begun placing stiff import tariffs on
certain vehicles
• The so-called “Chicken tax" of 1964 placed a 25% tax on imported
light trucks.
• In response to the tariff Toyota began building plants in the US by the
early 1980s

7. 1970-1980
• Due to the 1973 oil crisis, consumers in the lucrative US market began
turning to making small cars with better fuel economy.

8. 1980-1990
• Toyota entered into a joint venture with General Motors called the
New United Motor Manufacturing NUMMI
• The luxury brand, Lexus launched

9. 1990-2000
• In the 1990s, Toyota began to branch
out from producing mostly compact cars
by adding many larger and more
luxurious vehicles to its lineup, including
a full-sized pickup.

10. 2000-2010
• In 2002, Toyota managed to enter a Formula One works
team
• A youth-oriented marque for North America, Scion , was
introduced in 2003.
• Toyota ranked eighth on Forbes 2000 list of the world's
leading companies for the year 2005

• In 2011, Toyota suffered from a
series of natural disasters
• The Tohoku earthquake and
Tsunami led to a severe disruption
of the supplier base and a drop in
