Climate change requires manufacturing companies to change the way they do business, by re-thinking products and services. Resource efficiency will be a key to success, but an increased cooperation among different business functions is fundamental. Internet of things will be an important enabler and will help companies undergo such challenging transformation. The presentation illustrates some key points and the links with energy efficiency and energy management.
The document discusses the role and evolution of energy managers in Italy. It provides background on laws passed in Italy since the 1970s that have mandated the appointment of energy managers at large energy-consuming organizations. It also describes the organization FIRE, which promotes energy efficiency and certifies energy management experts according to the UNI CEI 11339 standard. Surveys of energy managers discussed in the document found that many have implemented energy efficiency projects but lack adequate budgets, and that the role of energy manager is growing as organizations seek to improve energy management.

My presentation about the measurement of energy efficiency savings held in Bruxelles on June 10th at the conference "Applying common methods and principles for calculating the impact of energy efficiency obligations schemes or other policy measures under Article 7 of the Energy Efficiency Directive" organized by the EU JRC. Issues and opportunities are summarized, together with the Italian experience linked to the white certificate scheme.
Energy efficiency can be an important driver for the competitiveness of industrial enterprises. This presentation, introductory to the webinar "Energy efficiency implementation in industries: the EU-MERCI approach to good practices for multi-sector companies", shows the reasons why energy efficiency should not be considered just as a cost reduction through energy savings, but could provide much more benefits.
The document discusses heat recovery in industry. It notes that heat recovery can provide thermal energy for internal or external heating demands, or can be upgraded for uses like cooling or electricity generation. Effective heat recovery requires considering factors like the temperature and availability of waste heat sources, the technologies available, investment criteria, characteristics of potential heat users, and the location of heat sources and users. Heat recovery can support district heating for industries, buildings, and other sectors.

White certificates in Italy: lessons learnt over 12 years of evaluationDario Di Santo
Energy efficiency obligation schemes (EEOs) are used in many EU countries as a policy measure to reach energy efficiency targets. Some of the first EEO (UK, Italy, France, Denmark) have been capable to reach positive results over the years, as shown by the ENSPOL and EPATEE projects.
The Italian mechanism, in particular, is an interesting example of white certificate scheme (WhC), since it is one of the most long-lasting schemes (operatively started in 2005), has ambitious targets, covers all sectors and energy efficiency solutions, and has many flexibility options in place (e.g. non-obliged parties, tradable market, bankability, etc.).
Another point of interest is WhC development over the years. In the first phase, most of the projects were related to buildings with deemed savings as energy savings assessment method. Then the industrial sector rose constantly, till covering 80% of the savings in 2014, mostly assessed through metered savings procedures. In the last three years deemed savings procedures have started to recover, while metered savings have remained the most used energy savings evaluation procedure. This last development was not expected and is mainly due to some regulatory decision and to the modification of the assessment of additionality for many industrial projects categories, due to the diffusion of certain energy efficiency solutions and to changes in the methodological approach.
The presentation, based on a paper presented at the IEPPEC conference in Vienna, illustrates the issues that have arisen over the recent years, and the decisions taken to address them through a major redesign of the Italian scheme that has been introduced with new ministerial guidelines in 2017: many aspects – such as targets, baseline and additionality, saving assessment, and measurement, verification and control procedures – has been deeply affected. The presentation will cover such themes under an evaluation point of view, highlighting the savings achieved with respect to the national targets, how indicators like additional energy savings, costs, and employment have evolved over time, the role of the involved stakeholders (utilities, ESCOs, end-users, etc.), and the effects of tight verification and control procedures.

White certificates: news and opportunities after 2018 reviewDario Di Santo
D.M. 10 maggio 2018 introduced some important modification to the guidelines of the Italian white certificate scheme, mostly to deal with issues such as the lack of certificates to fulfil the targets and the excessive rigid rules introduced in 2017 to present new energy efficiency projects. The presentation shows the main changes and some results in terms of issued certificates and prices and summarises some hints on the future of the scheme.
The presentation about ESCOs with a focus on industrial activities in Italy illustrated at the JRC workshop "Energy Services Market in the EU" held in Brussels. The topics discussed are the blurred definition of ESCO, the Italian situation on this respect, the UNI CEI 11352 certification, the main characteristics of the industrial sector, some survey data about the ESCOs market, and the link with support schemes and in particular with the white certificate scheme.

White certificates in Italy: the shift towards industryDario Di Santo
The presentation about the paper presented at Berlin IEPPEC conference on the shift towards industry of the Italian white certificate scheme. It shows that white certificates are not necessarily a support scheme aimed at deemed savings projects within the civil sector.
The first version of the O&M Guidelines was published in 2016 to address service quality issues in solar O&M. By 2019, the guidelines have become a living document powered by an active community of experts. Version 4.0 provides updates which are considered important to keep pace with the fast development of the industry.
White certificates: the shift towards industry presented at ECEEE summer studyDario Di Santo
The Italian white certificates scheme (WhC) has been in place for nine years and a lot of experience has been gathered. More than this, it has become an effective mechanism, mostly based on measured energy savings, to promote and implement energy efficiency in industry.
The scheme is based on an energy efficiency obligation, imposed on electricity and gas distributors, and on a tradable market for certificates, thus acting as an incentive for medium and large end-users and energy service companies (the voluntary parties).
The proposed paper shows in detail the shift of the scheme from the civil sector to the industrial one and from deemed savings projects to monitoring plan projects. Also the transformation of some energy service providers in ESCO has worthy to be noticed.
The paper is based on an extensive research carried on from FIRE on monitoring plans commissioned by ENEA, showing what kind of interventions have been implemented, how they performed compared to the expected savings, and what kind of advice can be given to other countries that are considering the introduction of an energy efficiency obligation (EEO) scheme according to the 2012/27/EU directive.

Finanziare l'efficienza energetica nell'industriaDario Di Santo

SECEM
SECEM, European System for Certification in
Energy Management, is a certification body
created by the FIRE.
SECEM was the first body to offer third-party
certification for Energy Management Experts
(EMEs) according to UNI CEI 11339 and is
accredited according to the ISO/IEC 17024
standard.
In Italy two standards were developed in order
to promote the qualification of energy efficiency
operators: UNI CEI 11339 for EMEs was issued in
2009, UNI CEI 11352 for ESCOs was published
in 2010. A new standard for energy auditor is
presently under preparation.
Both the mentioned standards are recognized
from the national legislation within the energy
audit obligations for large companies
introduced by the EED directive and the white
certificate scheme.

Energy efficiency is the
main pillar of the
action required to save
us and our planet.
It is not just an issue of
policies, but also the
need of a different
approach towards the
use of energy.

a new mobility
will impact the
market
The rational
use of

11. The role of IoT
11
Are you kidding me?
How can I do all that?
Well, I’ll
be the perfect
solution… but I’m
engaged with my new
movie, so you can
try IoT
And no, it’s not
in my bag… ask
someone else

The role of IoT
12
13. Ai and deep learning
13
Few would have thought that GPUs
developed for games has become the
core of deep learning, capable of
exploiting neural networks concepts.
A lot of opportunities arise from AI and
deep learning activities.
Nvidia starts developing AI GPUs
14. Some suggestions
14
Start using IoT to improve what you do
Results will come after an adequate IoT
adoption threshold is reached
It is important to change behaviours and
mentality, not just installing equipment
We are just at the beginning of a
revolution: new skills are required
Be careful: more IoT means more risk of
ICT attacks
15. The role of energy efficiency
15
Understanding
multiple benefits of
energy efficiency can
help to drive the
change required
Source of the figure: IEA, Capturing the multiple benefits of energy efficiency.
16. Expand the horizon beyond energy
16
Three reasons to
evaluate non
energy effects
Economic value: NPV and IRR of projects
improve, since cash flows consider both energy
savings and other elements.
De-risking: Evaluation of negative effects allows
to better understand – and thus address – risks
related to the energy project. That both reduces
the perceived risk associated with energy
efficiency (one of the main barrier to
investments) and facilitate third party financing.
Proposal value: It becomes possible to propose
energy efficiency projects by highlighting and
exploiting benefits other than energy, thus
addressing the core interest of other company’s
business functions.
17. Impact on risks, costs, value proposition
17
M-Benefits is an EU project aimed
at developing tools to support
enterprises to quantify NEBs.
18. Leaders need sustainability and IoT
18
And you have
to trust that the
dots will somehow
connect in your
future…

Consumer support.
19. Re-design products
Source of figures and data: Dyson.
19
Focus on what products
do, and try to think how
to improve it, using less
resources, and how to
use IoT to deliver a
better experience or to
improve know-how.
20. Re-think packaging and logistic
20
There are numerous
opportunities to improve
the supply chain and the
distribution of its
products in a circular
economy perspective and
by using IoT.
Not just robots, but re-think process, Amazon
Tracking cold chain products
temperatures, Cargo Data
Low environmental impact
From 55.5 g to 7 g per package
From 33% to 70% of recycled paper
From 150 to 800 packages/pallet
Automatic tracking and location of assets, Alstom
Improved packaging, Vimar
Recycling of production
waste, Pedon
21. Re-design the manufacturing process
Source of figures and data: FCA.
21
The re-design of the manufacturing process
can produce big results through:
optimised layouts (do more in less space,
using less resources);
energy efficient machinery (it is important
to look at every phase, including stand-by);
monitoring and automation (big data e
modern ICT systems allow for flexibility,

Most of the
possibile
improvements are
there.
