WHAT IS TOURISM?
• Tourism is a socio-economic phenomenon.
• Tourism accounts for the single largest peaceful movement of people across cultural
boundaries of the world.
Dictionary says,
The activity of visiting places for pleasure is tourism.
CONCEPT OF TOURISM
• Tourism is travel for pleasure or business; also the theory and practice of touring,
the business of attracting, accommodating, and entertaining tourists, and the
business of operating tours.
• There is no single definition of Tourism that is universally accepted.
• Wall (1982) defines , “the temporary movement of people to destinations outside
their normal places of work and residence.”
WHAT IS INDUSTRY?
• Industry is the production of goods or related services within an economy. The major
source of revenue of a group or company is the indicator of its relevant industry.
FORMS OF TOURISM
In 1994, the United Nations identified three forms of tourism in its Recommendations
on Tourism Statistics:_
 Domestic tourism
 Inbound tourism
 Outbound tourism
CAREER OPTIONS IN TOURISM
INDUSTRY:-
There are many options to venture into to be a part of the tourism sector; public
and private. Like:-
Department: There are jobs as Reservation and counter staff, Sales and
marketing staff, Tour Planners and Tour guides.
Airlines: One can opt between being the ground staff or in flight staff.
Hotels: In Hotel, One can choose from Operations, Front office, House
keeping, Food and Beverages, Accounting, Engineering/ Maintenance, Sales,
Public relations and Security, etc as one of the many departments to work
with.
Tour operators: They are the ones who help organize conducted tours to the
various tourist spots and manage the travel and stay of the tourists.
Travel Agents: Travel agents evaluate the requirements of tourists and
businessmen and help them make the best possible travel arrangements from
the many available. Many resorts, travel groups use travel agents to promote
their tour packages to travelers.
Transport: Apart from airlines, travelers require rail services, coach
operators, car hire companies to go from one place to another - by air, road,
railway, sea etc. All this is take care by the ones handling transport.
ELIGIBILITY AND COURSE
REQUIREMENTS FOR TRAVEL AND
TOURISM EDUCATION:-
• There is no specific eligibility criterion for travel and tourism education, it depends
on your willingness to opt for the course levels. There are courses for Graduate and
postgraduate level while for the short-term options, Diploma and Certification in
travel and tourism is available with private training programs by travel agencies.

tourism packages to the visitors. India is the only country that offers different
categories of tourism. The Indian government took efforts to encourage different
kinds of tourism in India. India shows an exponential growth in tourism industry
because of the support given by the government.

together. The survey according to FICCI (Federation of Indian
Chambers of Commerce and Industry) states that there is a very
bright future for the tourism industry in India. India has always
been known for its diverse climate, hospitality, uniqueness etc
this is the reason why India has been doing well in all types of
tourism in India
IMPORTANT FEATURES OF THE TRAVEL
AND TOURISM INDUSTRY:
 Travel and tourism is the largest earner of foreign exchange world-wide and employs
millions of people directly or indirectly through associated service industries.
 This industry includes everything from the government tourism departments and major
multinational companies to the small scale private travel agents.
 While working in this industry, one provides services to people who are traveling for
business or holiday or both, thus catering to tour packages, pilgrim travel, adventure
travel or casual sightseeing.
 At almost every point of work in this field, employees need to interact personally with
the customers and understand their needs while making them comfortable, so as to be
able to provide the best service in terms of travel options and arrangements.

• Salary is pretty good in the travel and tourism industry. Moreover,

your family. Salaries are higher in foreign based airlines or travel

TOURISM IN INDIA
• Indian Tourism Industry is ranked 11th in the Asia Pacific region and 62nd overall,
moving up three places on the list of the world's attractive destinations.
• In India Tourism is the largest service industry with a contribution of 6.23% to the
country's GDP and 8.78% of the total employment of the nation. India witnesses
about more than 5 million annual foreign tourist arrivals and 562 million domestic
tourism visits. Indian Tourism Industry generated about US$100 billion in 2008
which is expected to increase to US$275.5 billion by 2018 at a 9.4% annual growth
rate.
• Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Agra and Jaipur have been the five most visited cities of
India by foreign tourists during the year 2015. Worldwide, Delhi is ranked at 28 by
the number of foreign tourist arrivals, while Mumbai is ranked at 30, Chennai at 43,
Agra at 45, Jaipur at 52 and Kolkata at 90.
• The Ministry of Tourism designs national policies for the development and
promotion of tourism. The Ministry also maintains the Incredible India campaign.
