WHAT IS TOURISM?
Tourism is a social, cultural, and economic
phenomenon which entails the movement of
people to countries or places outside their usual
environment for personal or business purposes.
OUTLINE TWO FEATURES OF TOURISM IN
GUYANA THAT MAKES IT ATTRACTIVE TO
VISITORS.
The Kaieteur Falls
• The kaieteur falls is the largest single drop waterfalls and the
most powerful waterfalls in the world it is located on the
Potaro River in the Kaieteur National Park it sits in a section
of the Amazon rainforest included in the Potaro-Siparuni
region of Guyana.
The World Largest Lily
The Victoria Amazonia Lily it is the National flower of Guyana it is the
largest lily in the world with leaves spanning more than three meters across
with thick stalks submerged 7 to 8 meters in the water.
The giant flower transforms when it first bloom at night, they are white and
open and on the second night, they become pink. These beautiful flowers
can grow up to 40 centimeters in diameter.
DISCUSS TWO MAJOR BENEFITS AND ONE
LIMITATION OF TOURISM
Two major benefits of tourism are:
• Tourism brings in money – Tourism brings in money because people from all over
the world travel to different countries. As we already saw, tourism is a huge industry,
which means that it has a lot of benefits, including economic and social ones. It
provides jobs in hotels, restaurants, and other tourism-related industries. It also helps
sustain services so that tourists can enjoy their vacations even more.
• Tourism provides jobs – Tourism can provide a significant source of income for
local communities. As a result, tourism often generates jobs in various fields like the
hospitality and agriculture industries. Tourism also helps to improve the housing
market, which will lead to economic growth and job opportunities in other industries
One limitation of tourism is:
Environmental Damage – There are many disadvantages to tourism,
such as the effects on the environment. Tourists will often cause damage
during their visit in an attempt to find a photo opportunity. The result is
that tourists are often responsible for deforestation and over-exploitation
of natural resources. Destroying habitats could lead to extinction of
endangered species, which could have adverse consequences on
biodiversity.
AS TOURISM OFFICE, SUGGEST TWO ACTIONS THAT THE
GOVERNMENT MAY TAKE TO ATTRACT MORE
VISITORS TO GUYANA. JUSTIFY THE ACTIONS YOU HAVE
SUGGESTED.
Two actions that the government may take to attract more visitors to
Guyana are:
1. Safety of Tourists
Security and safety is an important aspect in tourism for tourist. Tourists
should feel safe visiting Guyana. Therefore, the government of Guyana
should work on reducing crime rates and tightening the security of the
country. Tourists should be able to come into a country without getting
rob, kidnap or even being killed.
2. Advertisement that expands worldwide
The government of Guyana can invest in TV and online ads that
can be broadcast internationally showcasing the beauty of Guyana.
Example: magazine can be created and exported into tourism
markets of other countries to attract its people. Also, government
needs to maintain these tourist attractions so once people, they will
be able to go back to their country and spread the good word about
visiting Guyana.
