It utilizes short-acting hypnotic drugs like propofol and analgesic drugs like fentanyl delivered via target-controlled infusion pumps. TIVA provides advantages like rapid titratability of drugs, faster recovery, reduced pollution and side effects like nausea. Precise computer-controlled infusion pumps along with pharmacokinetic models are used to achieve and maintain targeted drug concentrations in the blood and effect sites. Common drugs utilized in TIVA include propofol, fentanyl and muscle relaxants which are administered individually or in combinations based on the patient and procedure.
