Reflection Class Reflection
On November 8, 2017, I implemented my whole group lesson at Maverick
Elementary School in Mr. Alderson s Kindergarten class. It was near the end of
the day, during the time Mr. Alderson s students usually did math, which was
around 1 to 2 o clock. The students just came back from P.E. and were a bit tired
looking. However, Mr. Alderson had been telling the class that I was going to do a
fun math lesson after P.E., so the students were very excited when they came back.
When the students came back inside of the classroom, I had them sit on the carpet.
Before I introduced the lesson, I had them count from 1 to 10 as a class. While they
were countingfrom 1 to 10, I wrote the numbers on the board. Once they counted to
10, I asked the class if they knew what numbercame after 10, 11, 12, 13, and 14.
Practically the whole class knew the numbers 11 through 15, when I asked them. A
lot of the students counted even further. However, I stopped the class at the
number 15. I then told them what the lesson was going to be about. I told them
that we were going to do a fun activity over the numbers 11 to 15. I told them that
we were going to find different ways to represent the numbers 11 to 15. The
standard or TEK that I used was TEK K.2B, which was about writing and
representing whole numbers from 0 to at least 20 with and without objects or

The song American Pie , by Don McLean, was a dominate rock and roll hit in 1971.
McLean illustrates famous rock star artist and songwriter Buddy Holly, who died in a
plane crash in 1962 by using rhetorical strategies. The different potential
interpretations of this song made it one of the most controversial songs from the
1970 s. McLean was hitting home with many emotional resonances defining moments
in the recent American experiences. American Piestarts out addressing McLean love
for music in the 50 s. During the 50 s, music was a tool for getting people off their
feet and on to the dance floors. And I knew if I had my chance, that I could make
those people dance, and maybe they d be happy for a while (McLean). This verse

few verses in American Pie. McLean incorporated these lines of imagery to help

from locations other than the regular and secure office. Employers and organizations
need to realize that employees often need to connect to internal private networks from
home, hotels, airports, etc. A solution for this problem is using a virtual private
network (VPN), which is a network that uses public network paths, but maintains the
security and protection of private networks. Secure communication is expensive, but
VPNs allow organizations to have a number of discrete communication services for a
large amount of clients. It is cheaper to have a copious amount of virtual networks on
a couple physical devices than having a copious amount of physically discrete devices
accomplishing the same objective.
Methodology
VPNs transmit data through secure tunneling. A packet is first encapsulated in a
new packet with a new header and then sent through the tunnel, which is normally
IPSec, L2TP, PPTP, or SSL. Both points of the tunnel need to support the protocol
used. To provide access to the internet, the packet with a private IP address can be
sent inside of a packet with a global IP address. For security, VPNs use encryption to
make sure packets are indecipherable without the proper keys, which provides data
confidentiality. They also provide data integrity using a message digest to ensure the

Encounters with non state armed actors form the backdrop of my research agenda.
As a peacekeeper in Kosovo, I witnessed seemingly random acts of violence spark
hate filled reprisals. This behavior made visible the networks of grievances and
feuds within villages and peoples minds. My soldiers and I understood little about
our adversaries who hid among an acquiescent population and whose identities and
loyalties seemed to continuously shift. We were almost powerless to stop this kind
of violence because of our legal mandate, and because it appeared to be enabled by

I wondered: how can governments make credible commitments to security and
governance when the landscape of violence remains fragmented? What I saw on the
ground rarely corroborated with the broader narratives I read in newspapers, the
military s anodyne policy briefs, or academic literature on conflict. Those sources
held ideas that made sense to me as applicable to wars between states, but not to the
kinds of conflict that we now seemed to face. From my ground level perspective, it
puzzled me to see how some non state armed actors implemented strategies that
appeared counterproductive to their short and long term objectives. Again I
wondered: did it appear that way because they knew something we did not, or was it
because we truly understand so little?
The United States withdrew its troops from Iraq and Afghanistan based upon the
appearance of security. That security was short lived due to dysfunctional governance
and factionalized violence. Other countries, such as Yemen and Somalia, exhibit
similar degenerative processes. Within these fragmented states, governance
institutions crumble amidst the competition between proliferating non state armed
groups. Most individuals in this context experience radical increases in insecurity
with a corresponding decrease in their capacity to undertake positive political action,
