What’s In
Good day, learners! Are you excited to explore more about the hand or foot
spa treatment in nail care? Then, more information and activities are prepared ahead
for you.
Previously, you have learned about the types of spa treatment in nail care. To
recall, we have a paraffin wax spa, mud mask spa, salt and sugar spa, and plenty of
special variants of a spa that make the nail care experience wonderful and relaxing.
Read further and you will be amazed.
What’s New
You have heard so much about a hand spa treatment, right? But you have no
idea what are the things or tools and supplies needed to perform the spa treatment.
Photo credit by Lucille N. Quiriado
What picture do you see above? It’s actually a paraffin wax needed for
paraffin wax treatment. It’s a waxy solid hydrocarbon mixture similar to what is used
to make candles, wax paper, and sealing materials. But this paraffin wax is specially
formulated for beauty care purposes like in hand spa treatment.
5
What Is It
Today, you will learn to identify the hand/foot spa tools, equipment, supplies,
and materials used in a paraffin spa treatment. Since, paraffin spa is the most
common, simple, and affordable type of hand and foot treatment, the lesson focuses
on the things to use and prepare for the activity.
Read the information below to deepen your understanding.
Paraffin Wax Spa Tools and Equipment
Photo credit by Lucille N. Quiriado
1. Hand Spa Machine. It contains a heat source and container that holds
paraffin wax. The machine melts the wax and maintains it in a liquid state.
When you immerse your hand, foot, or other body parts in the liquid
paraffin, the wax coats the body part completely. The warm temperature of
the wax penetrates the skin, muscles, and bones provide a soothing effect
that can help relieve the pain of arthritis, bursitis, joint inflammation or
muscular strains, or spasms.
2. Towels. The first towel is used to wipe the sanitized hands or feet with
hand soap and water. The other towel is used to wipe off excess paraffin
after removing the wax from the clients’ hands.
3. Small Basin. This is used to contain water in washing and sanitizing the
hands or feet of the client before the application of paraffin wax.
6
4. Plastic (cling wrap). This is used to wrap the hands of the client after
immersing on the melted paraffin wax.
5. Mittens. This is used to wrap the clients’ hands after wrapping with cling
wrap or disposable gloves.
6. Scrubbing Glove. Use to scrub and sanitize thoroughly the dirt of the
client’s hands and feet.
Paraffin Wax Supplies and Materials
Photo credit by Lucille N. Quiriado
1. Hand Lotion. Use to moisturize the clients’ hands and feet through
massage.
2. Paraffin Wax. It’s a waxy solid hydrocarbon mixture similar to what is used
to make candles, wax paper, and sealing materials. But this paraffin wax is
for beauty care renowned for their healing and pain-relieving properties.
The paraffin wax was first used by doctors to help relieve arthritis pain, but
it has become a standard beauty care supply in nail salon services.
3. Liquid Hand Soap. It is used in handwashing and sanitizing the hands of
the client before the paraffin wax application.
4. Salt Scrub. Used to soften, exfoliate and remove dry and flaking dead
skins.
5. Alcohol. Used as a sanitizer and disinfectant.
How to Use a Paraffin Wax Machine
 When using a new hand spa machine, always read the manufacturer’s
instructions before operating it.
7
 Make sure the machine is disinfected with disinfectants before using it to
avoid the spread of infection and diseases to the clients.
 Set the paraffin wax machine on a flat, balanced surface near a wall plug.
 Put the paraffin wax into the machine. Be sure to place the correct amount of
wax into the machine, as directed in the instructions. Place the lid on top.
 Plug in the machine and let sit for as long as the instructions say. The paraffin
is ready to apply when it has completely melted.
 Add paraffin as needed for the machine. Paraffin melts at a very low
temperature, meaning that the hands can be submerged in the wax without
causing burning or blistering. Be careful not to overfill the machine.
 After the spa, discard the remaining paraffin following the waste management
procedure, then disinfect the machine, wipe dry with a clean cloth, then store
in dust-free storage.

What’s In
Good day, learners! What can you recall of the last topic we had just
discussed? Yes, it was about the hand spa tools, equipment, supplies, and
materials. You have surely known and familiarized the things needed to perform
paraffin wax hand and foot treatment, right?
You surely recalled that hand spa machine, scrubbing glove, towels, mittens,
and small basins are the basic tools and equipment needed in performing paraffin
wax spa treatment. They are categorized according to their being reusable. They can
be used multiple times, unlike the supplies and materials like the alcohol, hand soap,
paraffin wax, lotion, and salt scrub, they are consumables and are single use only.
What’s New
By learning the content of this lesson, you are expected to become a future
nail technician, a trained staff who does the nail care services. In the same manner,
you are expected to be an expert in handling tools and equipment. Now, what is the
best thing to do with the tools, equipment, supplies, and materials before using and it
even after using it to the clients?
What Is It
What is hygiene? According to the World Health Organization, hygiene refers
to conditions or practices pertaining to maintaining health and preventing the spread
18
of diseases through cleanliness. Specifically, the topic for today requires hygiene, or
extensive cleanliness in taking care of the hand or foot spa machine, tools, supplies,
and equipment to avoid infection of the working environment.
You have to read further and you will discover the importance of taking into
account the safety of the clients through safe practices.
Sterilization, Sanitization, and Disinfectants
Sterilization is a term referring to any process that removes thoroughly or
kills all forms of microbial life, including communicable agents (such as fungi,
bacteria, viruses, spore forms, etc.) present on a surface. While, sanitization is the
method employed in destroying some, but not all micro-organisms. Sterilization and
sanitization techniques are being practiced in the beauty salon involve the use of
physical agents like heat and radiation; and chemical agents like antiseptics and
vapor fumigants. All your tools must be washed in warm soapy water, then rinsed
and then dried thoroughly before sterilizing them.
Some techniques for sterilizing of tools are;
 Autoclave: High compression steaming with not less than 121 degrees
Celsius for 15 minutes. It’s suitable for stainless steel and glass tools
 Ultraviolet: Used to store sterilized equipment. The UV method is only
effective on the surfaces it touches, so the tools will need to be turned over
 Glass Bead: Glass beads are heated to 190 degrees Celsius to 300 degrees
Celsius. They are kept at this temperature for 30- 60 minutes before use.
Suitable only for very small items such as tweezers and cuticle pushers.
 Chemical Sterilizers: The most common chemical sterilizer is Barbicide. The
tools are totally immersed in a solution of Barbicide or other chemicals and
water. Always follow the instructions to the letter.
Disinfectants, on the other hand, are substances used to control micro-
organisms on non-living surfaces such as tools, equipment, and furniture/ fixtures.
Disinfection does not necessarily kill all micro-organisms, especially resistant
bacterial spores. It is less effective than sterilization, which is an extreme physical
and/or chemical process that kills all types of harmful microorganisms.
Hygiene Matters
Directions. Place inside the box below the hand and foot spa tools, equipment, and
materials that can be sterilized, sanitized, and disinfected.
SAFETY
Sanitization Sterilization Disinfection
19
What’s More
Keep in attention that all tools/implements and equipment should not be used
unless effectively sanitized or sterilized so as to prevent possible diseases and that
all materials are neatly arranged on the trolley. All beauticians should maintain a high
standard of personal hygiene. Wherever possible, use disposable products.
Happy vs Sad Face
Directions. Below are outlines of a happy face and a sad face. Write in the happy
face
the correct procedure of what a nail technician should do after, every
working session and on the sad face if it is an incorrect one. Base your
answer on the statement below the happy and sad faces. Write only the
letter of you’re answer to any part of each face. A sample below is
done for you.
a. Tools that are made of plastic should be kept clean and sanitized properly in
preparation for the next patron.
b. Empty bottles and containers are discarded in an uncovered trash bin.
c. Used treatment products and other chemicals are stored, arranged, and
properly labeled and placed on the floor for easy reach.
d. The hand and foot spa machines must be flushed with a solution of about 5%
bleach and circulate the liquid through the system for at least 10 minutes.
b
20
e. Leave the solution in the hand and foot spa machines overnight or at least 5-
10 hours before draining the machines so that they are thoroughly sanitized.
f. Tabletops and door handles are wiped with disinfectant and the floor should
be mopped with disinfectant as well.
g. Metal tools and instruments must be washed with soap and water only. After
the process, store in a wet cabinet until needed.
h. Waste materials should be disposed of properly in an uncovered waste bin
fitted with a polythene bag.
i. The bin should be uncovered for easy disposal in a well- ventilated area.
j. Any tool or equipment in poor condition must be repaired immediately or
disposed of properly so as not to pose danger to the clients as well as the
beauticians.

  • 10. 4 What’s In Good day, learners! Are you excited to explore more about the hand or foot spa treatment in nail care? Then, more information and activities are prepared ahead for you. Previously, you have learned about the types of spa treatment in nail care. To recall, we have a paraffin wax spa, mud mask spa, salt and sugar spa, and plenty of special variants of a spa that make the nail care experience wonderful and relaxing. Read further and you will be amazed. What’s New You have heard so much about a hand spa treatment, right? But you have no idea what are the things or tools and supplies needed to perform the spa treatment. Photo credit by Lucille N. Quiriado What picture do you see above? It’s actually a paraffin wax needed for paraffin wax treatment. It’s a waxy solid hydrocarbon mixture similar to what is used to make candles, wax paper, and sealing materials. But this paraffin wax is specially formulated for beauty care purposes like in hand spa treatment.
  • 11. 5 What Is It Today, you will learn to identify the hand/foot spa tools, equipment, supplies, and materials used in a paraffin spa treatment. Since, paraffin spa is the most common, simple, and affordable type of hand and foot treatment, the lesson focuses on the things to use and prepare for the activity. Read the information below to deepen your understanding. Paraffin Wax Spa Tools and Equipment Photo credit by Lucille N. Quiriado 1. Hand Spa Machine. It contains a heat source and container that holds paraffin wax. The machine melts the wax and maintains it in a liquid state. When you immerse your hand, foot, or other body parts in the liquid paraffin, the wax coats the body part completely. The warm temperature of the wax penetrates the skin, muscles, and bones provide a soothing effect that can help relieve the pain of arthritis, bursitis, joint inflammation or muscular strains, or spasms. 2. Towels. The first towel is used to wipe the sanitized hands or feet with hand soap and water. The other towel is used to wipe off excess paraffin after removing the wax from the clients’ hands. 3. Small Basin. This is used to contain water in washing and sanitizing the hands or feet of the client before the application of paraffin wax.
  • 12. 6 4. Plastic (cling wrap). This is used to wrap the hands of the client after immersing on the melted paraffin wax. 5. Mittens. This is used to wrap the clients’ hands after wrapping with cling wrap or disposable gloves. 6. Scrubbing Glove. Use to scrub and sanitize thoroughly the dirt of the client’s hands and feet. Paraffin Wax Supplies and Materials Photo credit by Lucille N. Quiriado 1. Hand Lotion. Use to moisturize the clients’ hands and feet through massage. 2. Paraffin Wax. It’s a waxy solid hydrocarbon mixture similar to what is used to make candles, wax paper, and sealing materials. But this paraffin wax is for beauty care renowned for their healing and pain-relieving properties. The paraffin wax was first used by doctors to help relieve arthritis pain, but it has become a standard beauty care supply in nail salon services. 3. Liquid Hand Soap. It is used in handwashing and sanitizing the hands of the client before the paraffin wax application. 4. Salt Scrub. Used to soften, exfoliate and remove dry and flaking dead skins. 5. Alcohol. Used as a sanitizer and disinfectant. How to Use a Paraffin Wax Machine  When using a new hand spa machine, always read the manufacturer’s instructions before operating it.
  • 13. 7  Make sure the machine is disinfected with disinfectants before using it to avoid the spread of infection and diseases to the clients.  Set the paraffin wax machine on a flat, balanced surface near a wall plug.  Put the paraffin wax into the machine. Be sure to place the correct amount of wax into the machine, as directed in the instructions. Place the lid on top.  Plug in the machine and let sit for as long as the instructions say. The paraffin is ready to apply when it has completely melted.  Add paraffin as needed for the machine. Paraffin melts at a very low temperature, meaning that the hands can be submerged in the wax without causing burning or blistering. Be careful not to overfill the machine.  After the spa, discard the remaining paraffin following the waste management procedure, then disinfect the machine, wipe dry with a clean cloth, then store in dust-free storage. You have to read further and you will discover the importance of taking into account the safety of the clients through safe practices. Sterilization, Sanitization, and Disinfectants Sterilization is a term referring to any process that removes thoroughly or kills all forms of microbial life, including communicable agents (such as fungi, bacteria, viruses, spore forms, etc.) present on a surface. While, sanitization is the method employed in destroying some, but not all micro-organisms. Sterilization and sanitization techniques are being practiced in the beauty salon involve the use of physical agents like heat and radiation; and chemical agents like antiseptics and vapor fumigants. All your tools must be washed in warm soapy water, then rinsed and then dried thoroughly before sterilizing them. Some techniques for sterilizing of tools are;  Autoclave: High compression steaming with not less than 121 degrees Celsius for 15 minutes. It’s suitable for stainless steel and glass tools  Ultraviolet: Used to store sterilized equipment. The UV method is only effective on the surfaces it touches, so the tools will need to be turned over  Glass Bead: Glass beads are heated to 190 degrees Celsius to 300 degrees Celsius. They are kept at this temperature for 30- 60 minutes before use. Suitable only for very small items such as tweezers and cuticle pushers.  Chemical Sterilizers: The most common chemical sterilizer is Barbicide. The tools are totally immersed in a solution of Barbicide or other chemicals and water. Always follow the instructions to the letter. Disinfectants, on the other hand, are substances used to control micro- organisms on non-living surfaces such as tools, equipment, and furniture/ fixtures. Disinfection does not necessarily kill all micro-organisms, especially resistant bacterial spores. It is less effective than sterilization, which is an extreme physical and/or chemical process that kills all types of harmful microorganisms. Hygiene Matters Directions.
