Oliver Sacks s The Man who Mistook his Wife for a Hat
Oliver Sacks s The Man who Mistook his Wife for a Hat
As a child, I watched Alfred Hitchcock Theater, The Twilight Zone and other science fiction or
horror shows. Often times the storyline was based on a victim s mental problems or their
skewed perception of the world. Looking back, I remember the fascination I felt when watching
one specific episode of the Twillight Zone. In this particular episode, a man turned into a zombie
by some type of poison. Essentially he was still alive, but he was dead to the world. In the end
he was embalmed while he was completely conscious yet could not say anything to prevent it.
Like this incident, every episode captivated me but when it was over I could sleep easy because
there was no possibility of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Madeline suffered from Cerebral Palsy a disease that causes rigid, convulsive muscles in the legs
and arms. Children with the disease often have a difficult time crawling, walking and grasping
objects. As time passes they do not get any better. Formerly, it was called Little s Disease in 1860
by the English surgeon William Little, today it is known as Spastic Diplegia, a category of Cerebral
Palsy (Introduction). Today medications, surgery and braces help children with Cerebral Palsy
improve nerve and muscle coordination, treat related medical problems and correct abnormalities

Sacks discussed the ideas behind the phantom limb and how they affected many peoples live.
The most interesting story was about a sailor that accidentally cut off his index finger. For forty
years he thought he would poke himself in the eye whenever he moved his hand to his face. One
day he lost the feeling in his entire hand including his phantom finger and his problem was cured
(Sacks 66 67). Up to 70 percent of amputees confirmed that they still feel or still thought a missing
limb was there. They often feel that they can reach out and grab something. Some won t sleep in a
certain way because they feel the missing limb between them and the mattress. The sensations felt

The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty
How often do you daydream on a daily basis? According to researchers, people daydream about
half of the day. Most daydreams are about your future and what you want to become. Daydreams
can be a positive thing if they are about something meaningful, but they can also be a negative
thing if you are having them during class. In the short story, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty by
James Thurber, Walter is isolated from the rest of the world in his real life and is timid. In his
imaginary life, on the other hand, Walter is the complete opposite as a courageous and intelligent
person.
In his real life, Walter Mitty is incapable and insecure. For instance, when Walter is trying to park
his car, he isn t able to so the parking attendant has to help him. Walter is incapable of doing even
the simplest things in life, like parking a car. And he needs help doing these things in his life. In
addition, as Walter is driving with his wife she is shouting at him and telling him what to do, and
Walter doesn t fight ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For instance, when Walter is steering the ship into the hurricane, he remains calm and says that
they will get through it. Walter is a different person in his imaginary life than in his real life. He
is definitely more confident in himself in his imaginary life because he is something way bigger
in his imaginary life than in his real life. When Walter is a doctor in his imaginary life, he is
clever. For example, when a machine broke during surgery, he put a pen into it to replace the
broken piece and that made him look brilliant. Walter is intelligent because nobody else would
have thought of putting a pen into the machine to fix it long enough for the surgery to be
completed. Walter is very creative in his imaginary life, because in his real life he would have
never thought of that. As a result, Walter Mitty loves his imaginary life because in every dreamhe

California Drought And Organic Versus Conventional Farming
California Drought and Organic Versus Conventional Farming
Introduction California s ideal weather would be rainy winters and dry summers, but that isn t the
case anymore. Many people are concerned and deeply worried about the world s constant
decrease in the fresh water supply and the social, economic, and environmental issues that are
caused from this drought. A textbook definition of a drought is a prolonged period of abnormally
low rainfall which results in a shortage of water, which is normal considering California has been
given the title in its recent years the term drought since 2012. Even though being in a drought is
nothing new to California, for the past three years it has experienced severe drought conditions in
the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The only problem with relying on groundwater is that it needs to be recharged by wetter years in
order to be stable and not continue to diminish. With the drought targeting the agricultural
community in California, many farmers are starting to research more ways on how to become
drought efficient. The two common methods of farming are organic and conventional. Different
farming methods have their own way on affecting the public health and the environment through
herbicides and pesticides. Some of the benefits of organic technologies are higher soil organic
matter and nitrogen, lower fossil energy inputs, and conservation of soil moisture and water
resources (Pimentel and Hepperly 2008). Conventional farming can be more ecological by adapting
some of the organic technologies. The objective of this literature review is to better understand the
problems that arise from being in a drought, the water supply, and how farmers are adapting to the
change in climate.
Methods and Materials According to the article, Probable causes of the abnormal ridge
accompanying the 2013 2014 California drought: ENSO precursor and anthropogenic warming
footprint it states that the drought was initiated by an anomalous high amplitude ridge system.
Starting in the late summer of 2013, this ridge emerged from Rossby wave energy that became
stronger in winter. These surges of wave energy

Walt Disney Research Papers
Walt Disney s company was one of the biggest contributors out of the other big animation
corporations to the American animation industry and culture as well to the support effort for the
allies of WWII by providing the government with animated propaganda and Ignisia. Animation
played a major role for the advancement of motion film in 1900 s. Before motion picture camera,
frame by frame photographs were used to understand animal and human movement. Eventually a
series of famous cartoons would be created which would lead to the expansion of animation studios
in New York and California. One famous animation studio that opened up was Walt Disney

would eventually dominate animation for many years. Disney animation brought many... Show

After several years of these Alice shorts, or comedies, Walt went into making only fully animated
films, featuring the character Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. This event in Walt s life would teach
him to make the rights to everything he made when he discovered that his distributer in New
york, Charles Mintz. Mintz had hired many of Disney s animators to his own company behind
Walts back. He also found out that Oswald the Lucky Rabbit was owned by Mintz according to
the contract. So Instead of giving in to Mintz by working for him and allowing him to own all of
Disney s creations, Walt refused and went along with Iwerks and Roy to create a new character
and decided to move their studio on Hyperion Avenue property in Hollywood. The new location
of the their studio would allow them to expand their materials in their studio and create a larger
workplace to allow more employees to work in there. A new cartoon character that would become
a recognizable symbol of Disney would be the famous Mickey Mouse which who would be have
his own show and be featured in many famous cartoons. It took
Garcia 3 a third short to finally sell due to the past shorts that did not have sound. Including
synchronized sound, Steamboat Willie opened to rave reviews at the Colony Theater in New York
November
18, 1928. Mickey Mouse became a very popular show and so more cartoons were to follow. Walt
produced a new series to go along with the Mickey Mouse show called the Silly Symphonies.

How Art Follow One Of The Five Formal Elements Of Art
All aspects of art follow one of the five formal elements of art. The elements are line, shape,
texture, color, and balance. Some elements are subdued, but some paintings have elements that are
very obvious. With the artists use of these elements he states what his style is, as well as, the use
of medium, and color that directs the viewer s eye to a specific area of the painting. I will choose
paintings to show these elements, how they are used, and what idea the artist is trying to show, and
give my impressions.
The first element I will address is shape. There are regular shapes that are geometric and irregular
shapes that show motion. I have chosen, for shape, Little Yellow Horses by Franz Marc, shown on
page 829. This painting was completed in 1912. The medium is oil on canvas in the Expressionism
style. It is currently displayed at Staatsgalerie, Stuttgart, Germany.
Here we have a painting of three yellow horses with exaggerated curvature and is composed of
open circles. The artist saw yellow as a happy color and thought animals were more beautiful
than man. The curves are accentuated by the black manes of the horses. The two front horses
have an added open circle with their heads being down. The horse in the background has just a
slight curve of his back and the arc of his mane. In this work, at first glance, is a sea of yellow,
black and circles. Upon a closer look, the artist shows the beauty of the horse. The yellow along
with the blue and pink

Free Radical Research Paper
Free radicals are groups of atoms, molecules, or ions that possess an unpaired/unshared valence
electron in their electron orbitals. Due to this, many radicals are very reactive because they want
to reach a stable state. They can be classified as oxidants or reductants depending on whether they
accept electrons from other atoms or donate atoms. Free radicals can be produced by natural
processes such as metabolism. They are also generated from foods that we eat, water, medication,
etc.
Free radicals are essential to the human body because they are important components of the
immune system and they also assist the body with the production of chemical energy. However,
they can be dangerous. A free radicalcan take an an electron from another

Dynamic Influences Of Culture On Cooperation
According to Dynamic influences of culture on cooperation in the prisoner s dilemma (2005) by
Wong Hong, cultural symbols affect people s behavior in specific situational contexts. In order to
substantiate this hypothesis, the authors used a three by two between subjects method, with one
hundred and seventy one participants. In the study, the independent variable was icons, either from
American, Chinese, or neutral backgrounds. Additionally, the three dependent variables studied
were cooperation versus defect, expectation of cooperation, and motivation to maximize join
outcome (Wong Hong, 430). Furthermore, the measures of cultural priming were measured by
exposing participants to seven slides of Chinese cultural icons, such as a Chinese dragon, American
cultural icons, such as the American flag, or neutral primes, such as geometry. The participants
were assigned randomly to the prime conditions and the procedure for each primes required
participants to answered questions related to the prime they were assigned to, such as naming the
objects or describing the ideas represented. According to the authors, research has shown that these
procedures elicit the cultural knowledge systems among individuals that were needed in this study.
After introducing the cultural primes, the study asked the participants to play a strategy game,
where outcomes depended on strategies chosen by the participant, and resulted in points gained or
lost. However, different strategies yielded

Food Preferences in the Sow Bug (Porcellio Laevis)
Purpose
The purpose of this experiment is to determine what kind of food the sow bug prefers; decaying
leaves, potatoes, grapes, or sow bug food.
Hypothesis
If a sow bug is placed in a choice tray, and has access to decaying leaves, potatoes, grapes, and
sow bug food, the sow bug will choose the decaying leaves over its other options. This
hypothesis was based on research stating that a sow bug s main food source is decaying
vegetation. This is the food they are accustomed to and therefore will select over the other three
options which they rarely if ever would have access to.
Materials

Bisected grapes
Chunks of potato

Pinch of sow bug food ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This information would suggest that the sow bugs were not especially interested in food at the time
the experiment took place.
The data gathered might not have been conclusive in discovering the preferred food source of
sow bugs, but it at least showed that the decaying leaves were what they were attracted to for
whatever reason. This information could be used in a variety of different ways. It would be
helpful in pest control as well as in keeping a sow bug alive. For people who consider sow bugs a
nuisance, the data could reduce the population of sow bugs in certain areas by removing the
decaying leaves. This would make the habitat less inviting and therefore discourage the presence of
sow bugs.
When relating the information to a wider variety of topics, even though the information was not
conclusive, it came to attention that the preference of habitat or food source in sow bugs has a
major effect on the areas in which they live and on the organisms survival. Whether it is because
of food and/or environmental related issues the fact that the sow bugs preferred to reside in and
/or eat the decaying leaves shows that areas with significant quantities of decaying leaves have a
chance of being affected by sow bugs. Because decaying matter is a main food source for sow
bugs it could be assumed that if sow bugs resided in an area containing decaying leaves, they would
also be ingesting them. This would have an impact on that environment. When the sow bugs eat the

Differences Between Euthyphro And Socrates
Euthyphro by Plato introduces a dilemma that invites one to ask if what we do is just because
we say it is or is it just because the gods say so. This dialogue transpires between Euthyphro and
Socrates. Socrates was a student of all things in the sky and below the earth. As a student, a pupil
of all that there is to learn, one will ask questions. This is what Socratesdid. Euthyphrowas a
theologian that was acquainted with Socrates through means unknown. Although he was familiar
with Socrates s method of communicating with others, Euthyphro did not seem to mind Socrates s
questioning until he, himself, was questioned. The two meet at the courthouse, awaiting separate
trials. Euthyphro was prosecuting his father for murder, and Socrates... Show more content on

It also makes me wonder if the meaning of piety and impiety would have been questioned if this
conversation did not occur. Throughout the reading, I found myself unable to define my own
opinion of the meaning of piety and impiety, as this was not something that I considered before.
Piety can hardly be seen as a bad thing, but is it only considered good because people consider it
to be good, or is it good because the gods esteem it to be so? Euthyphro grapples with this idea, but
ultimately falls short of a definite solution to the question at

Similarities Between Bhutto And Catt
Both the Address by Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto and and Carrie Chapman Catt s Address to the
Congress on Women s suffrage explain the importance of women s rights. Bhutto and Catt use
similar techniques to convey their message and convince the audience of its importance. Bhutto
and Catt use the persuasive techniques of pathos, and logos. Bhutto uses pathos to appeal to the
audience s emotions, where the daughters are more malnourished than the sons, for the daughters
get to eat the leftovers ( Bhutto). She offers real world examples about how society immorally
treats women, while using a depressing tone, making the reader feel sorrowful and compassionate
for women. Catt used pathos to make the audience feel compassion for women, when she asks, do

It shows that even the most prestigious women are debased when it comes to political power.
Bhutto and Catt effectively used pathos to stimulate the audience s pity for women, and can
connect their grief to Bhutto and Catt s claim of gender equality. Bhutto and Catt also used logos as
another way to persuade the importance of women s rights. Bhutto used statistical information,
comparing boys and girls treatment in different countries, today two thirds of the world s illiterate
population are women ( Bhutto). By the use of logos Bhutto proves her claim of the need of gender
equality, and appeals to the audience s reasoning. Catt uses logos by discussing the hypocrisy of the
founding fathers, who left Great Britain because of taxation without representation, yet did not
mention women suffrage in the constitution. For example, Our founding fathers declared that all
americans shall be represented, yet women are denied suffrage. Not one American has arisen to
question their logic in 141 years ( Catt

Homosexuality In Gatsby
Many people believe Nick has romantic feelings toward Gatsby, but many are in disbelief. There are
various amounts of instances throughout the book where Nick makes unobvious homosexual
comments or remarks. When this book was written, being homosexual was mistaken, very frowned
upon, and even illegal. F. Scott Fitzgeraldhad to make the topic of homosexuality very quiet, just
like the alcohol and the bootlegging. Alcohol and bootlegging are just as illegal as
homosexuality, sp F. Scott Fitzgerald made it very hard to pick out these topics. Nick has to keep
his feelings toward Gatsby to himself, and has only ever says something homoeratic to Gatsby

Nick sees Gatsby s flaws after he dies, but was blinded to them while he was alive.
Before Gatsby dies, Nick says the one thing to Gatsby that people can argue is a homosexual
statement, and definitely proves how Nick has been blinded to Gatsby s flaws. Nick says to
Gatsby, They re a rotten crowd...You re worth the whole damn bunch put together (Fitzgerald
154). Nick saying this can be controversial in a couple of ways. When Nick says The whole damn
bunch put together , he is mostly referring to Gatsby, Daisy, Tom and Jordan. Daisy is his cousin
and that makes Tom family by marriage. Jordan is a woman Nick had a romantic relationship
with. For Nick to say that Gatsby, out of all these people, is the best out of them shows a lot
about Nick and his feelings toward Gatsby. For him to choose a man he had recently met over
his family or someone he has had a relationship with is very interesting. Most people will choose
their family or someone they are romantically involved with over a friend. Thus proving that
Gatsby is more than a friend to Nick. This statement can also be controversial because Gatsby is
not a saint. Daisy, Tom, and Jordan are all terrible people. Daisy lead on two men at the same
time, one being her husband. Daisy also killed a woman and will not take the blame for it. Tom
cheats on his wife with the wife of one of his

Pros And Cons Of Gambling Addiction
Gambling addiction can be a serious a problem, for some more than others. Some have the self
control to know when enough is enough, and then some don t. After reading the article it is safe
to say that Mr. Watanabe had some serious issues. Not only did he have a serious gambling
problem, he also had a drinking and drug problem. These two together is not a good combination.
This was not your normal gamblingissue, this was the biggest loss in Vegas history of 127 million
dollars! Seeing this from an outsider s perspective, there are two different ways you can look at
the situation. You can either feel sorry for him and feel that he was treated wrongly and unlawfully,
or one can feel no remorse for him and that he brought it all upon himself. After much thought, I
have a firm stance that what was going on in those casinos was one, illegal and two, outright just
wrong. Mr. Watanabe was absolutely taken advantage of.
As a young boy Mr. Watanabe had a wealthy family was a very successful business man and was a
chief executor of his father s business by the age of 20. After years of owning this business he sold
it for millions and decided he wanted to have fun for a while and be stress free. Gambling is fun,
right? He began gambling at a Harrah s casino in Iowa back in 2003. He was one of the casinos
biggest gamblers at the casino and everyone knew him very well there. He had also traveled to
Vegas to gamble and that s where his serious gambling, drug and alcohol abuse began.

Blacks In Film Essay
Film is one of the most influential means of communication and a powerful medium of propaganda.
Race and representation is central to the study of the black film actor, since the major studios

The depiction of blacks in Hollywood movies reinforce many of the misconceptions of the white

The black ghetto of television has opened up lately, and shows featuring African
Americans in a variety of roles may be viewed any night of the week. This shift is primarily the
result of challenges made by the NAACP, and the resulting general shifts in public attitudes about
race. But the new representations of blacks are also shaped by the historical stereotypes which
plagued African Americans.
In 1971 actor and director Melvin Van Peebles wrote, produced, starred in, and composed the
soundtrack for the film Sweet Sweetback s Badasssss Song . An entirely black production, it
broke the mold of black characterization in feature films. The story revolves around a pimp
suddenly radicalized by aiding a young black revolutionary who is beaten by white cops. His
resulting disgust with the white establishment struck a cord with black audiences everywhere. The
films ending, with it s proclamation that quot;a badasssss nigger is coming back to collect some

Pros And Cons Of Concealed Weapons
Christopher Ingraham brings up a very valid point: how would you feel if you couldn t carry a
concealed weapon? Fifty six percent of Americans would feel safer if more people carried
concealed weapons (Ingraham). Now that s not an overwhelming number, but anything over fifty
percent is still a number that gets your attention. The reason for this is there have been a rise in
shootings. People are starting to realize that if they are allowed to carry concealed weapons, they
will have a chance to protect themselves. Ten years ago, only 27 percent of Americans prefered to
be allowed to carry concealed weapons (Ingraham). Now that s an overwhelming difference.
Gun concealment is an ongoing conflict and for a valid reason. Both sides bring up very good
points. Those sides being, we should be allowed to carry concealed weapons and we should not
be able to carry concealed weapons. This is where things get tricky. People carried concealed
weapons anyway. Illegally. With this happening, the people who are not carrying a concealed

amount of gun violence would decline and show an overwhelming difference.

When Michael Moore first created the documentary, Bowling for Columbine , in 2002 he not only
wanted to raise awareness around the tragedy that was the Columbine Massacre, but wanted to look
beyond that and dig deep into finding out the political events that led up to this tragic event.
Michael Moore wanted to seek to investigate and confront leading, powerful politicians for allowing
this violent culture to worsen for their own benefit through creating this documentary. It is clear
that Moore loves his country but hates its current politics which is why he decided to make
Bowling for Columbineas it both highlights the issues surrounding Americas current Gun laws
whilst investigating the truth behind the Columbine Massacre and the political events leading up to
this tragedy. This reading will explore Michael Moores political stance whilst investigating the

The World Wide Web By Tim Berners Lee
The World Wide Web was planned by Tim Berners Lee in 1989 with the first successful test
taking place in 1990. It is a collection of internet servers that support formatted documents in a
mark up language called HTML (Hyper Text Mark up Language) that can contain hyperlinks
leading to other documents such as images, videos and graphic files. You can move from one
document to another by clicking on hot spots (Links). At first the World Wide Web
started of very
simple. There were just static pages that users could only really look at, the only action they are
able to do was move to other pages. But now, the World Wide Web is much more social and there
are lots of ways you can interact with the pages that can be found on the World Wide Web.

setting up treaties and designs to pertain to the environmental changes coming along year after
year. Mahatma Gandhi, one of the greatest leaders to leave this world, left with a few words on
the environment: The earth, the air, the land and the water are not an inheritance from our fore
fathers but on loan from our children. So we have to handover to them at least as it was handed
over to us. If we as humans cannot live up to this standard of the loan we ve been given in this

However, the countryside has a profound monsoon season that can be witnessed throughout

Analysis Of Covers The Ground By Gary Snyder
Title
To people foreign to California, the state is boxed into a set of stereotypical characteristics. The
Golden State has received labels such as surf nation, and liberal land. But to those who ve gotten a
chance to live within this great state appreciate the opportunities and ambitions that come with
living in California. Furthermore, what truly differentiates California from any other place in the
world is the consistent paradoxical environment. This notion is best epitomized by the city of
Sacramento and the cultural, economic and social change that the city has undergone. Gary Snyder
communicates this theme through building around John Muir s ideologies in his work of Covers
The Ground. Snyder s work exemplifies the contradiction between nature and innovation. It
presents the paradoxical state individuals around the world face on whether to accept the
innovation and accept the benefits that come with it, or stay true to the roots of nature and the
history that accompanies it. This dilemma boils down to whether we as a race embrace the
progression of time and the paradoxes that follow, or we find solace in our current state.
The inception of Covers The Ground, begins with establishing the setting of the city of
Sacramento. Understanding the natural beauty of the city is best conveyed by establish vivid
imagery and Snyder accomplishes this by describing the blossoming almond orchard acres. As the
image of nature sparks into the reader s head, Gary Snyder is

A Report On Traditional Neighbourhood Search Methods
Initial Population: We originally decide the size of the population, and then the method by which
the members for the population are chosen. The primary idea of the size of the population always
forms a trade off between the efficiency and the effectiveness of GA implementation. In general, it
appears that there should be some ideal value for a given length or size of the population, on the
grounds that too little a population would not permit adequate opportunity for exploring the search
space effectively, while too big a population would damage the efficiency of the approach that no
solution could be expected in an realistic amount of time limit [15]. Termination Condition:
Traditional neighbourhood search methods are simple in the sense that they terminate when a local
optimum is encountered. On the other hand, GAs are blind search stochastic optimization
techniques that could in principle run for endlessly, but could converge fast to the solution with
right termination criteria set. In practice, a termination criterion is mandatory to prevent the
iterations get infinite; the common practices are to set a limit on the number of fitness evaluations
or the computation time consumed, or to track the variability in the population and stop when this
falls below a pre set boundary value. The meaning of diversity in the latter case is not always
apparent, and it could relate either to the genotype or the phenotype, but the most effective way is
through a measure of the

International Contracts And International Sale Contracts
A conflict of laws is a major issue that usually arises in international commercial transactions.
International characters in the transaction create questions, such as which court has jurisdiction
over the case, which law is applicable to the case and will the judgment enforceable. One possible
way to avoid the risk of a conflict of laws is to harmonise laws relating to international sales into
uniform law or a convention for worldwide adoption. The United NationsConvention on Contracts
for the International Sale of Goods (CISG), known as the Vienna Convention, is one of the results
from the harmonisation of international trade law. Although there are many supports to this
convention, the argument of its effectiveness still continues and some countries still not ratify.
International sale contracts are not quite similar to domestic sale contracts as the international
character cannot be found in domestic contracts. The first character is the movement of goods
which travel from one state to another state, no matter where the seller s and the buyer s places of
business are. Another character is the different places of business of both parties which means that
both parties have different legal systems. Involving with property, parties or events located in more
than one jurisdiction and the laws of those jurisdictions are different, a conflict of laws issue might
arise in a dispute between parties. The differences between laws of each country also create
uncertainty in

Will Iran Destroy The World If Not Kept
Will Iran destroy the world if not kept in check?
Throughout the past century many nations have started to strive for nuclear weapons this arms
race has become an increasingly hostile and dangerous situation to be in. This all started around
70 years ago with the dropping of the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima by the United States of
America. From then on it has been a race for who could get the newest and best technology being
nuclear weapons. Eventually some of the top countries realized what this arms race could do and
have started to decrease their stockpiles. But there is a new threat of an arms race in the Middle
East which could prove catastrophic for the rest of the world if not kept under control by the U.S.
and other G5 nations. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This could lead to Iran potentially sharing its nuclear technology with extremist groups who hate
the United States and other Western nations. While Iranian missiles can not yet reach America,
Iran having a nuclear weapons capability can potentially directly threaten the United States and its
inhabitants. Iran has publicly stated it may launch a space launch vehicle by 2015 that could be
capable of intercontinental ballistic missile ranges if configured as a ballistic missile. (The
Department of Defence, 2014). On top of this threat many officials are also concerned about the
possibility of a nuclear weapon arriving in a cargo container or being launched from a boats at a
major US port. A federally mandated commission to study electromagnetic pulse attacks has
stated vast damage that could be brought by a single missile with a nuclear warhead if launched
from a ship off the US coast and detonated a couple of hundred miles in the air above America.
(Commission to Assess the Threat to the United States from Electromagnetic (EMP) Attack,
2004). Now to stray from the threats facing the United States there are the issues that nuclear
armed Iran poses to America s closest allies in the Middle East. First, our largest ally in the region,
being Israel, is most at risk because of Iranian hatred for them and the belief that Israel should be

Korean Politics And Korean Political Leadership
In 1910, Japan became the first non western colonial power by annexing Korea. But unlike the
western empires, Japan wanted to strip away not only Korean resources, but also Korean history
and culture. To justify the invasion, the Japanese claimed that they were liberating the Koreans
from their ethnic and cultural backwardness (Palais 412). As a result, mainstream Korean history
has taught that Koreawas an insignificant player in pre modern Asia which was beset both by
internal and external conflict. The Japanese perpetuated the notions that foreign powers constantly
invaded Korea, that Korean political leadership regularly fought amongst themselves, that the ruling
elite continually oppressed its people, and that Korea was a cultural extension of China. However,
these beliefs about Korean history are largely inaccurate.
In fact, while Korea was a comparatively small country, it had the ability to defend itself from
foreign attacks through direct combat and diplomatic means. Also, Korean political structure and
ideologies enabled prolonged periods of stability despite internal conflict, allowing Korean dynasties
to last longer than Chinese ones. Additionally, even though the ruling elite required taxes, labor,
and military service from its people, sources reveal that they often had the Korean people s interests
in mind. Finally, although China largely influenced Korean culture, Koreans augmented the
borrowed cultural ideas to make them their own.

Effects Of Amendment 2 On The State Florida
Has anyone done any research on what the effects Amendment 2 would have on the state Florida?
Well the opposition clearly did not do any research and the politicians used smooth talking fallacies
to blind side the voters. It is time to see the holes in their stance on medical marijuana.
The Smokescreen as defined by the author Joe Cardona from the Miami Herald, is the lack of
liability Amendment 2 brought to the table when it hit the polls in October. His meaning behind
this is because a medical marijuana user would not be receiving a prescription from a trained
medical physician. Instead, they would be receiving a referral for a license to receive treatment
and they would have it forever. Also as part of Joe Cardona s Smokescreen theory, because the fact
that Amendment 2 is a constitutional amendment that there would have been no way to tweak or
amended it, like a legislative law would. So regulating the consumption of medical marijuana would
be impossible. (Cardona, 2014)
Unfortunately he is not the only one to interpret Amendment 2 this way. Dr. Rafael Miguel,
director of the Sarasota Memorial Institute for Advanced Medicine s Pain Medicine Program and
representatives for Drug Free America. He states that You don t get refills, you get it forever. There
s no regulation on consumption. (Gillin, 2014)
These bold statements were completely wrong and very misinforming. The referral would also

The Drilling Of Fshore Drilling Industry
The offshore drilling industry can be split into 5 key markets: upgrade market, contract drilling
market, second hand market, scrap market and contract drilling market. Among them contract
drilling market is most important, because it ensures smooth cash flow between markets. drilling
units is summarised in the table below.
The table above describes cash flow within offshore drilling markets. Contract drilling market
leases drilling units to O G companies to drill or service wells, in turn they receive day rates.
The day rate is the daily price to lease a rig and includes the use of the rig and its crew but does
not include most of the other costs associated with drilling and completing a well (e.g., casing,
drilling fluids, logistics, well evaluation, etc.). The drilling service industry is the largest and most
closely followed of the five markets and drives the activities of investors in the other markets.
The new build market uses shipyard labour and capital to convert steel and third party equipment
into rigs. Drilling contractors enter into turnkey contracts with shipyards for the construction and
delivery of one or more rigs, or yards may build on speculation. The new build market is primarily
Asian with major shipyards in Singapore, South Korea, and China.
The upgrade market is a ship repair market which both upgrades and maintains rigs. Upgrades
improve and modernize rig technology and represent significant capital expenditures.
In the second hand market, rigs are

Tap Water Contains A Wide Variety Of Organic And Inorganic
Tap water contains a wide variety of organic and inorganic materials, most of which are innocuous.
However, some trace constituents in water, including heavy metals such as copper, zinc, cadmium
and lead, are more problematic. Water leaving a drinking water purification plant will ordinarily
contain negligible levels of lead and other harmful metals. These metals enter the water during
distribution, through the corrosion of service pipes and plumbing in a process called leaching.
Metals such as lead can leach from pipes, old solder or fixtures. Although some corrosion of
plumbing is inevitable, the severity of leaching depends on the material of the pipes, the corrosivity
and temperature of water and the amount of time water is stagnant... Show more content on

attention after delayed action from the EPA and state government, and only after widespread
elevation in blood lead levels (EBLL) of residents had induced long term and even permanent health
consequences (Romain, 2016).
As a result of increased public concern regarding water quality following the Flint Michigan water
crisis, Chicago Public Schools began a water testing program to analyze lead levels in drinking
water. Of 527 schools in the CPS system, 327 CPS campuses were tested by Chicago Public
School s Water Testing Program in spring of 2016. Analysis of water in these schools, conducted
by the EPA, revealed that of the 6,167 water fixtures tested on these campuses, 184 fixtures from
113 schools returned with levels above the lead action level of 15 parts per billion (ppb). In total,
34.56% of the initially tested campuses had at least one fixture that exceeded EPA action levels
(Chicago Public Schools, 20161).
The CPS school selected for testing in this research project was not tested in the initial round of
testing in spring of 2016. However, the selected school was tested the following school year, in
October of 2017. Results from the CPS testing indicated that none of the school s fixtures
exceeded 15ppb, however, lead levels below EPA action level were found, ranging from 2.1ppb to
11ppb. Of the 69 fountains tested, 22%

Ballads. The course comprised of a diversified look at American culture through folk traditions and
songs, which weaves the appalachian culture in the east, cajun culture in the southwest, and a
widespread look at the effect of the African American diaspora on American culture. Shawn
distinguished himself by submitting an exceptionally well researched and interesting essay on the
influence and communal purpose of the organ throughout American culture that characterized the

concise and well researched manner distinguished him from his fellow classmates. Overall, I
would rank him in the 95th percentile of students that I have taught in the past several years in
respect of his writing ability and research skills. Shawn is the first pupil I have given a letter of

Sexism In Sports
Sexism in Sports Sexism limits our country. In a world where sexism still exists, women face
challenges every day as they choose to embark in athletic activities. Even with the efforts of Title
IX, which was established in 1972, there is not equality in sports for men and women. Sexism is
real with stereotypes and discrimination on the basis of sex. Even with the high level of success
reached by numerous female athletes of many different sports, male athletes always seem to
have the upper hand. Whether it is pay, media, support, gear, or playing grounds, one sex always
has the better of the two. Male athletes dominate a field that truly is shared by both sexes. What
if we treated male athletes the way we treat female athletes? That is a world hard to imagine, and
honestly, it shouldn t be. Through female athletes sharing their stories of unfair treatment and pay,
sexism and generations of inequality in sports can be overcome. Title IX of the Education
Amendments of 1972 states, No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded
from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any
education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance. The impact of Title IX on the
lives of so many girls is immeasurable. It has created opportunities for women, where opportunities
did not use to exist. Unfortunately, it has not completely eradicated sexism. Women in many

Torque
Torque of a car is very important to its performance. Torque is the measure of how much force is
acting on an object and how that causes the object to rotate. (What is torque). Rotating the wheels
of a car is torque and that helps the car get up to speed faster. Many performance cars have very
fast 0 60 mph speeds, like the corvette, challenger and exotic cars like the Porsche, Bentley, Ashton
Martin etc. Everyone wants to know exactly what torque does; it is basically the amount of turning
power you have, basically like using a wrench. When looking at car specifications, the torque that is
shown is the maximum torque of the internal combustion engine.
The torque can tell a lot about how fast can actually accelerate. For example, if 500 newton
meters is the toque that the tires experience, the mass of a typical car is 1500 kg, and the
distance between the center of mass of the car and the wheels rotational axis is about 20 cm, the
moment of inertia I about 60 kg. Therefore the acceleration of the car is 4.25 m/s^2, meaning it
can go 0 60 mph in 6.3 seconds. (What does torque in a car do).
Car racing is a big part of torque; rotational motion in automobile racing is when the wheel turns
through revolutions throughout the race. The motor rotates in what is called as RPM. Each time a
tire rotates; the car moves the distance equal to the circumference of the tire. The distance a car

The Role Of Proteins Of A Cell Range From Structural,...
The DNA encodes specific characteristics of an organism which breaks down into genes. The
genes goes through a transcription process. Transcription is where the language of the body s
building blocks is transcribed from DNA to RNA and the body will recognize it so it can carry out
the next process. Translation of the information collected from RNA is the next step. The
information collected is transported to the protein. Certain proteins play specific roles so the body
synthesizes the right protein for the specific job at certain time.
Production of proteins is one of the most significant processes taking place in the cell. The role of
proteins in a cell range from structural, enzymatic and hormonal functions. DNA is responsible for

The double spiral of DNA unwinds and unzips in such a way to release the instructions located for
the given protein. Consequently, the instructions are carried out of the nucleus to the ribosomes.
This point of location of the DNA molecule is called a gene. Genes act as a pattern for another type
of nucleic acid called RNA. Instead of a thymine as in DNA, each adenine of the unzipped DNA
attracts a uracil, U. The other bases follow the same pattern as in DNA i.e., G, T, and C attract
the same partners C, A and G. The single chain of nucleotides which is newly formed is called
messenger RNA and its formation is called as transcription. mRNA carries an exact duplicate of
the information recorded in the DNA and leaves the nucleus with the instructions. The mRNA
molecules are attracted to the ribosomes in the cytoplasm. Another smaller kind of RNA
molecules called transfer RNA (tRNA.) also is there in the cytoplasm. Only one kind of amino
acid can be attached to one end of a tRNA molecule while the other end carries a distinctive tag
to identify it. The strand of mRNA lines up at the ribosome and the base pairs are attracted to their
partners again. The attraction between the mRNA and the tRNA compliments each other. A triplet
sequence of mRNA transcript codes for a specific amino acid and the sequence is called a codon.

Sexism In Video Games
Video Games. Video Gaming has been a popular form of entertainment in modern pop culture
since the early 1980 s. From the early beginnings of software producers such as Nintendo, they
have been creating games that have become favorable classics in only a few decades. With the
most popular classic video games including Super Mario Bros. (1985), Donkey Kong (1981), Pac
Man (1980), and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (1998), we can quickly note some
patterns. One of the patterns that we can note is all of the main playable protagonists within these
games are male. The second pattern that we can note is the majority of the games listed above have
a storyline written about rescuing a princess one of the only notable female characters within the
game. Along with this, the female characters are only story advancing non playable characters
(NPC s). When the online gaming community was first introduced and popularized in the early
2000 s, females in the gaming community quickly faced another obstacle; sexism. Anonymity
within the gaming community has become more than a tactic to hide your identity. For the majority
of female gamers in the gaming community, anonymity has become a crucial aid to avoid sexist
comments and actions from other online players. According to a 2006 Consumer Electronics
Association (CEA) report, women who were aged between 25 34 were out playing males during
non console competitive gaming. Also from this report, we can note that in the UK women have

Globalization Assignment
Written Assignment Unit 7
POLS 1503 Globalization
Introduction
As our world becomes more connected, the free travel of people and goods continue to rise in
dramatic fashion. There are many benefits such as increased trade, improved access to imported
goods, increased tourism and exposure to new cultures. With these benefits comes a risk of bringing
diseases across international borders. International travel and trade has brought new challenges to
public health care, and the threat of deadly illnesses spreading rapidly.
If the movement of people, food, and manufactured goods can have such a negative impact on
public health, should steps be taken to reduce these flows?
There are always risks with travel and imports. The benefits to the economy and increased access
to goods are worth the risks. However, in cases of emergency, it is completely reasonable to limit
trade and travel from affected areas. When cases of mad cow disease are detected, it is common to
block imports from the affect nations (Levin Institute, 2017a). During the outbreak of ebola in
Africa in 2014, the Obama administration opted for a temporary travel ban from west
Africa (Roberts, 2014). During the threat of an epidemic spreading across borders, extreme
measures have to be taken.
What other options are there for lowering the spread of global diseases?
International public health officials have made recommendations to help prevent the spread of
disease. These actions include a plan to monitor for new

Thus, parental background might play a role in how likely the children will start their education
early. The education that children receive is very much correlated to the education that their parents
received when they were children. Research shows that the literacy of their parents strongly affects
the education of their children. One reason for this is that parents who have gone beyond a high
school education are found to be more involved with their infants and children than those who did
not finish high school...many less educated parents simply have more unmanaged stress in their
lives, and this stress interferes with ability and opportunity to interact with their child (Paulsen et al.
2002). Typically, parents who have finished high school and gone on to receive additional schooling
understand the need to have a higher education and are more equipped to guide their children when
they go through school. And logically, that makes sense. The more time parents spend making
money, the less time they have helping their child s education. But while it could be reasoned that
early college preparation pertains more exclusively to students who have parents that undergone
higher education, it can t be the only reason for correlation does not mean causation. Parents that

Many serial killers have had an environment similar to Rhoda s and still suffered the same

environment when, famous serial killers such as Ted Bundy, Jeffrey Dahmer, and Dennis Rader

A study by the Palm Center, a research branch from the University of California Los Angeles
Law School, conducted a study a year after the repeal of DADT. The research group wanted to
discover what impacts the repeal has done to the military and according to their findings they
concluded: (1) The repeal of DADT has had no overall negative impact on militaryreadiness or its
component dimensions, including cohesion, recruitment, retention, assaults, harassment or
morale. (2) A comparison of 2011 pre repeal and 2012 post repeal survey data shows that service
members reported the same level of military readiness after DADT repeal as before it. (3) Even
in those units that included openly LGB service members, and that consequently should have
been the most likely to experience a drop in cohesion as a result of repeal, cohesion did not
decline after the new policy of open service was put into place. In fact, greater openness and
honesty resulting from repeal seem to have promoted increased understanding, respect and
acceptance. (4) Recruitment was unaffected by the repeal of DADT. In an era when enlistment
standards are tightening, service wide recruitment has remained robust. (5) Retention was
unaffected by the repeal of DADT. There was no mass exodus of military members as a result of
repeal, and there were only two verifiable resignations linked to the policy change, both military
chaplains. Service members were as likely to say that they plan to re enlist after DADT repeal as

Analysis Of The Article Basic Writing Through The Back Door
In her article, Basic Writing Through the Back Door: Community Engaged Courses in the Rush to
Credit Age, Oregon State University professor Cori Brewster reflects on her experiences working
with high school and college students in an accelerated summer writing course for college credit.
Brewster s reflection is pragmatic and demonstrates the strengths and the weaknesses of the
program. She also shares her hopes for the future of similar programs and some suggestions for the
improvement of future of dual enrollment, early college, and other similar programs that are a part
of the rush to credit trend in secondary and postsecondary education. These features of Brewster s
writing show Brewster s careful consideration of her students and of the trend toward
underpreparedness that these expedited programs can cause for students when the focus is on
hurried matriculation or the numbers instead of students actual needs. With a goal of providing
better access to composition instruction for Oregon s rural students in a limited time under
restricting conditions, Brewster manages to create a service learningproject that is meaningful for
the students and the community. The obstacles they encountered serve to give other teachers in
similar programs and other teachers of transitional students with the necessary insights to help make
developmental and basic writing programs better.

Cells Make Up Every Living Thing
Cells make up every living thing. They are mandatory to life and its functions. The cell allows us
to do our functions, while doing its own (Cobb, ed., 2009). Inside cells, there are organelles that
carry out functions for the cell to live. They have many different kinds of organelles, such as the
golgi body, endoplasmic reticulum, and the nucleus ( Cellular Transport, 2009). They all have
different jobs to allow the cellto function, but the cell membranehas a job that that is done in
various different ways. Cell membranes are critical to transporting particles for organelles of the
cell.
The cell membrane is the exterior layer of the mammalian cell and one of the plant s outer layers,

It goes from high to low. Passive transport requires no energy to do it. Some particles, such as
carbon and water, can pass through with no effort on the cell s part. There are three types of
passive transport, such as facilitated diffusion, diffusion, and osmosis. Diffusion has to do with
going with the concentration gradient. Facilitated diffusion is diffusion using a protein to help.
Osmosis involves water and a selectively permeable membrane. Water is diffused in and out the
membrane (Liu, Amagai, Chelen, n.d.). Diffusion is the process of molecules moving from an
area of high concentration of the kind of molecule to one of a low concentration (Liu, Amagai,
Chelen, n.d.). They are trying to achieve dynamic equilibrium. Dynamic equilibrium is when the
concentration outside and inside are equal to one another. An example of diffusion is when
someone sprays perfume on in a corner. The perfume will travel to every corner of the room
until it is spread evenly across it. Diffusion s purpose is to have a particle be spread evenly by
moving to a high to low concentration (Liu, Amagai, Chelen, n.d.). Facilitated diffusion is
diffusion, but has protein to help larger molecules move through the membrane. While it may
seem to use energy due to it using a protein, it actually doesn t require energy. The large particles
are going to a lower concentration than what is on the other side of the cell ( Cellular Transport,
2009). The

The Basics On Corrective Eye Surgery
The basics on corrective eye surgery
Before contact lenses finally became popular in the 50 s, eyeglasses had been the only practical
way to correct refraction vision errors. Now however, there are several modern ways when it
comes to correcting vision problems including corrective eye surgery. Corrective eye surgery
ranges from laser reshaping of the eye surface known as LASIK and PRK to a surgically inserted
artificial lens that corrects the eyesight. Within LASIK and other such similar procedures, laser
energy reshapes the curvature of the eye s clear front surface known as the cornea and alters the
way that light rays will enter your eye. This isn t too different from artificial lenses, which once
surgically inserted into the eye, can ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Those with lower prescription strengths pre surgery experienced fewer and less frequent side
effects. Radial Keratotomy is now almost non existent for these specific reasons as well as the
advances in technology when it comes to laser vision correction.
Photorefractive Keratectomy was the name of the very first successful laser vision correction
procedure that was used to remove the tissue directly from the surface of the eye. This was
carried out in order to change the curvature of the cornea itself. This procedure was also known
as surface ablation and was actually performed outside of the U.S during the 1980 s receiving
FDA approval around 1995. Photorefractive Keratectomy is still commonly used today however
LASIK is far more popular although Photorefractive Keratectomy has made a comeback of sorts
in recent years due to studies showing that it produces very similar results to LASIK. On top of
this, research has shown that nerve regeneration within the eye s surface takes place faster with
Photorefractive Keratectomy than with LASIK which could help reduce dry eye symptoms along
with other such complications associated with laser eye surgery. There s also no risk of surgical
flab complications due to it being a surface procedure. Photorefractive Keratectomy also appeals to
those with a thinner cornea as LASIK was once considered off limits for patients with thinner
corneal flaps. Recent technologies have given eye surgeons much better methods

How Seamus Heaney s Childhood Affected His Poetry Essay
How Seamus Heaney s Childhood Affected His Poetry
Seamus Heaney was born in the North of Ireland in 1939 on a farm with his mother and father and
nine other siblings. Generally Heaney s poems are influenced by animals through his childhood
experience, specifically within The Early Purges and An Advancement of
Learning . Heaney grew up near Belfast, during the time of The
Troubles , the Irish civil war. Although Heaney left at the height of the war, it is obvious his work
reflects his experiences of that time.
For an example The Early Purges illustrates this. Where they consider death unnatural . Growing
into an environment where Heaney will appreciate that death does exist, the extract interprets

They seem weak and terrified.
Heaney uses words such as, purges , the water pumped in , scraggy wee shits , dunghill and dung
to suggest that the kittens seem like waste. The title reflects the idea of waste, as the word purges
means getting rid of undesirables. The water pumped in, indicates what happens when flushing a
toilet, therefore getting rid of waste.
Dan Taggart calls the kittens, scraggy wee shits which shows that he doesn t care about the killing
of the kittens and treats them as waste to be got rid of. He justifies his actions by suggesting the
kittens have no value. A dunghill can be used for getting rid of dung and the kittens are sluiced on
the dunghill. The word sluiced means
flushed indicating a toilet, so the kittens are therefore treated as waste. Throughout the poem we
are viewing the killing through Heaney s eyes and it is evident that he does not like the killing
as he uses words such as soft , tiny and frail to suggest the kittens are innocent and harmless. The
words, For days I sadly hung round the yard, watching the three sogged remains and the fear came
back suggest he was affected by the carnage and murder he witnessed. However, toward the end of
the poem he is forced to accept the killing and torture.
Heaney became numb, unfeeling and almost deadened. This is shown in the words, I just shrug,
Bloody pups . It makes sense . He is almost imitating Dan Taggart at this point to justify

Texting And Driving While Driving
Summary
Texting in cars and trucks causes over 3,000 deaths and 330,000 injuries per year, according to a
Harvard Centre for Risk Analysis study.
Texting while driving a vehicle has now replaced drinking while driving as the leading cause of
accidents and deaths of teenage drivers. Texting in traffic isn t simply a problem among teens and
47% of adults admit that they text while driving. Texting drivers are 23 times more likely to be
involved in a crash than non texting drivers (Driving while Texting Six Times More Dangerous
than Driving while Drunk, 2014).
A mobile phone while driving is not only physically distracting, but visually distracting as well.
A driver is physically distracted as their hand is moved from the steering wheel to pick up the
phone, answer or end the call, or type a message. A mobile phone visually distracts the driver as
their eyes are taken off the road to look at the phone, when typing a message or reading (Service,
2013).
As a vehicle s speed increases, so does the distance travelled during the driver s reaction time and
the distance needed to stop. Also, the higher the speed, the greater the amount of kinetic energy
that must be absorbed by the impact in a crash. Therefore, as well as being identified as a causal
factor in around 40 % of fatal crashes, speed is an aggravating factor in the severity of all crashes.
As speed increases so does the distance travel while brain is processing information and reacting to
it and so does the distance

Explain The Technological Advances In Ww2
WEAPONS IN WWII The technological advances made in the World War II were amazing. We
gained a lot of new understandings in technology. The Rocket Team that made the missiles that
terrorized the streets of London helped send a man to the moon. And the weapon advancements
were high too. The weapons that were discovered are still helpful to this day. The machine guns
that were used in the war on the American side were: Browning M1919A4/A6 that fired up to
500 rounds in one minute, and the Browning M2HB (.50 BMG) that had grown a reputation for
itself, because it was used on vehicles and fired varied amounts of ammo. The Browning M2HB
was often referred to as the war horses the weapons because it was so overpowered. As for the

States should heighten their security, for instance, by increasing military strength or making
alliances with others. In this series, after the death of Gonzo, Jesse is afraid that Tuco will kill him
next. As a consequence, he buys a gun to protect himself from this brutal man. In spite of the fact
that he can make a lot of money from him by producing and selling meth, his security comes
first. In that moment, he does not care about how much money that he can earn in the future
because if he dies, money will not be important anymore. Thus, he tries to convince Walter to
help him to kill Tuco. This is when he tries to make an alliance with his partner. Walter does
concur with him because there is a possibility that Tuco will go after him and his family also.
Consequently, they try to make a plan to kill this erratic violent drug dealer. Both do not
consider wealth more important than their and their beloved lives, which is same as Tuco. He
value his life firstly. It can be seen that this character always carry a gun. For example, in season
2, episode 1, Tuco captures Walter and Jesse in the house where is far away from people.
Although in this house only has four people, Walter, Jesse, his disabled uncle and him, he still
carries 2 guns, a handgun and a rifle, with him. The reason that he carry many firearms might be
because at that moment DEA is going after him, and he does not truly trust Walter and Jesse as he

Blessed Clement Of Dunblane Research Paper
During the thirteenth century, Scotland was in full restoration. The entire region was in disorder;
there were many conflicts between the monarchy and the aristocracy. The New Scotland,
specifically Dunblane, was restored and revived by a nobleman who went by name Blessed
Clement of Dunblane. Although there was more than one individual that aided in the reconstruction
of the province, Clement of Dunblane was the man who was recognized with the majority of the
changes that were made during the 1200 s in Scotland. The transformation of the Scottish Church
mainly took place in the eleventh and twelfth centuries, when the new churches were constructed
and new bishops were appointed to care around the clock for the well being of the buildings.
Before the adjustments, the crown of Scotland and the crown of Englandwere seldom at peace,
resulting in the tremendous growth and development of the Catholic Church. Going back further
into the history of medieval Scotland specific dates and significant events were recorded in Irish
chronicles, which happened to vanish when the king of the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Scotland ). He was a Scotsman by birth and his native tongue was Gaelic (Rabenstein, 1998). He
later went on to pursue an education at the University of Paris, during this time he received his
habit and grew fairly close to a man who is now known as Saint Dominic ( March 19 Blessed
Clement of Dunblane , 2011). He was admitted into the Dominican Order of Paris in 1219. The

Pathos Ethos In Bowling For Columbine
The 2002 film Bowling for Columbine is a documentary written, directed, and narrated by Michael
Moore. Moore has won numerous awards including the Academy Award for best documentary
feature. The film explores acts of violence with guns and the primary causes for the Columbine
School Massacre, where two students shot and killed thirteen people and injured twenty one others.
Bowling for Columbinetakes a deep and often disturbing probe into what the motives may have
been for the shooters and investigates other gun related issues along the way. Moore explores
different aspects of gun culture such as receiving free guns from a bank, taking a look at America s
violent history, and interviewing important people like Charlton Heston, former president of the
National Rifle Association. The film ultimately comes to the conclusion that the American culture
of fear along with the accessibility of guns is the reason why there are so many gun related deaths.
This thesis is supported by many examples Ethos, Logos, and Pathos evidence.
Ethos is when the author uses the reputation, credibility, experience, and values of the author or an
expert as a means of persuasion. Moore himself is a renowned documentary maker and he ensures
that his film is factually true. However, at times he manipulates facts and other people to suit his
needs. For example, in the beginning of the film he is seen opening an account at a bank where
customers that open an account receive a free gun. Moore himself

Essay on Monetary Policy
Introduction
Monetary policy is among the many tools used by a national government to manipulate its financial
system. Monetary policy refers to the method used by the financial authority of any country to
control the supply and availability of money (Woelfel, 1994). It is often targeted at interest rates to
achieve lay down objectives directed towards economic growth and stability (Woelfel, 1994).
Monetary policy rests on the link between interest rates in an economy, that is, the relationship
between interest rates and the total money supply. It employs a variety of methods to control
outcomes like inflation, economic growth, currency exchange rates and unemployment.
Monetary policy can either be expansionary policy in which case ... Show more content on

One of these approaches is quantitative easing (QE). Quantitative easing is a technique used by
central banks to boost money supply in an economy when interest rates are close to or at zero thus
cannot be reduced further (Woelfel, 1994). To increase the supply of money under such conditions,
the central bank may be forced to buy government assets/securities like government bonds,
mortgage backed securities or government debt from banks thus increase their surplus revenue
hence raise or stabilize prices of such securities and consequently reduce interest rates in the long
term.
With this insight in mind, the remaining part of this essay seeks to critically examine the methods
of implementing monetary policy when interest rates are close to or at zero.
Monetary Policy Options at the Zero Bound
Interest rates have the lowest bound at zero mark. When this limit is reached, serious problems
occur in designing appropriate monetary policy approaches since interest rates can never be set
below this mark. Countries like Japan, United States and Switzerland have faced this challenge in
the recent past thus calling for alternative approaches to monetary policy when the nominal
interestrate is close or at zero.
Conventional monetary policy methods are always channeled towards lowering interest rates to
stabilize inflation and other outputs. This is however impossible in situations whereby the interest
rates are already close to or zero calling for

  • 2. Oliver Sacks s The Man who Mistook his Wife for a Hat Oliver Sacks s The Man who Mistook his Wife for a Hat As a child, I watched Alfred Hitchcock Theater, The Twilight Zone and other science fiction or horror shows. Often times the storyline was based on a victim s mental problems or their skewed perception of the world. Looking back, I remember the fascination I felt when watching one specific episode of the Twillight Zone. In this particular episode, a man turned into a zombie by some type of poison. Essentially he was still alive, but he was dead to the world. In the end he was embalmed while he was completely conscious yet could not say anything to prevent it. Like this incident, every episode captivated me but when it was over I could sleep easy because there was no possibility of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Children with the disease often have a difficult time crawling, walking and grasping objects. As time passes they do not get any better. Formerly, it was called Little s Disease in 1860 by the English surgeon William Little, today it is known as Spastic Diplegia, a category of Cerebral Palsy (Introduction). Today medications, surgery and braces help children with Cerebral Palsy improve nerve and muscle coordination, treat related medical problems and correct abnormalities (Introduction). Sacks discussed the ideas behind the phantom limb and how they affected many peoples live. The most interesting story was about a sailor that accidentally cut off his index finger. For forty years he thought he would poke himself in the eye whenever he moved his hand to his face. One day he lost the feeling in his entire hand including his phantom finger and his problem was cured (Sacks 66 67). Up to 70 percent of amputees confirmed that they still feel or still thought a missing limb was there. They often feel that they can reach out and grab something. • 3. The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty How often do you daydream on a daily basis? According to researchers, people daydream about half of the day. Most daydreams are about your future and what you want to become. Daydreams can be a positive thing if they are about something meaningful, but they can also be a negative thing if you are having them during class. In the short story, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty by James Thurber, Walter is isolated from the rest of the world in his real life and is timid. In his imaginary life, on the other hand, Walter is the complete opposite as a courageous and intelligent person. In his real life, Walter Mitty is incapable and insecure. For instance, when Walter is trying to park his car, he isn t able to so the parking attendant has to help him. Walter is incapable of doing even the simplest things in life, like parking a car. And he needs help doing these things in his life. In addition, as Walter is driving with his wife she is shouting at him and telling him what to do, and Walter doesn t fight ... Walter is a different person in his imaginary life than in his real life. He is definitely more confident in himself in his imaginary life because he is something way bigger in his imaginary life than in his real life. When Walter is a doctor in his imaginary life, he is clever. For example, when a machine broke during surgery, he put a pen into it to replace the broken piece and that made him look brilliant. Walter is intelligent because nobody else would have thought of putting a pen into the machine to fix it long enough for the surgery to be completed. Walter is very creative in his imaginary life, because in his real life he would have never thought of that. As a result, Walter Mitty loves his imaginary life because in every dreamhe sustains the qualities to be a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. California Drought And Organic Versus Conventional Farming California Drought and Organic Versus Conventional Farming Introduction California s ideal weather would be rainy winters and dry summers, but that isn t the case anymore. Many people are concerned and deeply worried about the world s constant decrease in the fresh water supply and the social, economic, and environmental issues that are caused from this drought. A textbook definition of a drought is a prolonged period of abnormally low rainfall which results in a shortage of water, which is normal considering California has been given the title in its recent years the term drought since 2012. Even though being in a drought is nothing new to California, for the past three years it has experienced severe drought conditions in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The only problem with relying on groundwater is that it needs to be recharged by wetter years in order to be stable and not continue to diminish. With the drought targeting the agricultural community in California, many farmers are starting to research more ways on how to become drought efficient. The two common methods of farming are organic and conventional. Different farming methods have their own way on affecting the public health and the environment through herbicides and pesticides. Some of the benefits of organic technologies are higher soil organic matter and nitrogen, lower fossil energy inputs, and conservation of soil moisture and water resources (Pimentel and Hepperly 2008). Conventional farming can be more ecological by adapting some of the organic technologies. The objective of this literature review is to better understand the problems that arise from being in a drought, the water supply, and how farmers are adapting to the change in climate. Methods and Materials According to the article, Probable causes of the abnormal ridge accompanying the 2013 2014 California drought: ENSO precursor and anthropogenic warming footprint it states that the drought was initiated by an anomalous high amplitude ridge system. Starting in the late summer of 2013, this ridge emerged from Rossby wave energy that became stronger in winter. These surges of wave energy ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Walt Disney Research Papers Walt Disney s company was one of the biggest contributors out of the other big animation corporations to the American animation industry and culture as well to the support effort for the allies of WWII by providing the government with animated propaganda and Ignisia. Animation played a major role for the advancement of motion film in 1900 s. Before motion picture camera, frame by frame photographs were used to understand animal and human movement. After several years of these Alice shorts, or comedies, Walt went into making only fully animated films, featuring the character Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. This event in Walt s life would teach him to make the rights to everything he made when he discovered that his distributer in New york, Charles Mintz. Mintz had hired many of Disney s animators to his own company behind Walts back. He also found out that Oswald the Lucky Rabbit was owned by Mintz according to the contract. So Instead of giving in to Mintz by working for him and allowing him to own all of Disney s creations, Walt refused and went along with Iwerks and Roy to create a new character and decided to move their studio on Hyperion Avenue property in Hollywood. The new location of the their studio would allow them to expand their materials in their studio and create a larger workplace to allow more employees to work in there. A new cartoon character that would become a recognizable symbol of Disney would be the famous Mickey Mouse which who would be have his own show and be featured in many famous cartoons. It took Garcia 3 a third short to finally sell due to the past shorts that did not have sound. Including synchronized sound, Steamboat Willie opened to rave reviews at the Colony Theater in New York November 18, 1928. Mickey Mouse became a very popular show and so more cartoons were to follow. • 7. How Art Follow One Of The Five Formal Elements Of Art All aspects of art follow one of the five formal elements of art. The elements are line, shape, texture, color, and balance. Some elements are subdued, but some paintings have elements that are very obvious. With the artists use of these elements he states what his style is, as well as, the use of medium, and color that directs the viewer s eye to a specific area of the painting. I will choose paintings to show these elements, how they are used, and what idea the artist is trying to show, and give my impressions. The first element I will address is shape. There are regular shapes that are geometric and irregular shapes that show motion. I have chosen, for shape, Little Yellow Horses by Franz Marc, shown on page 829. This painting was completed in 1912. The medium is oil on canvas in the Expressionism style. It is currently displayed at Staatsgalerie, Stuttgart, Germany. Here we have a painting of three yellow horses with exaggerated curvature and is composed of open circles. The artist saw yellow as a happy color and thought animals were more beautiful than man. The curves are accentuated by the black manes of the horses. The two front horses have an added open circle with their heads being down. The horse in the background has just a slight curve of his back and the arc of his mane. In this work, at first glance, is a sea of yellow, black and circles. • 10. Dynamic Influences Of Culture On Cooperation According to Dynamic influences of culture on cooperation in the prisoner s dilemma (2005) by Wong Hong, cultural symbols affect people s behavior in specific situational contexts. In order to substantiate this hypothesis, the authors used a three by two between subjects method, with one hundred and seventy one participants. In the study, the independent variable was icons, either from American, Chinese, or neutral backgrounds. Additionally, the three dependent variables studied were cooperation versus defect, expectation of cooperation, and motivation to maximize join outcome (Wong Hong, 430). Furthermore, the measures of cultural priming were measured by exposing participants to seven slides of Chinese cultural icons, such as a Chinese dragon, American cultural icons, such as the American flag, or neutral primes, such as geometry. The participants were assigned randomly to the prime conditions and the procedure for each primes required participants to answered questions related to the prime they were assigned to, such as naming the objects or describing the ideas represented. According to the authors, research has shown that these procedures elicit the cultural knowledge systems among individuals that were needed in this study. After introducing the cultural primes, the study asked the participants to play a strategy game, where outcomes depended on strategies chosen by the participant, and resulted in points gained or lost. Pill Bug Lab Report Food Preferences in the Sow Bug (Porcellio Laevis) Purpose The purpose of this experiment is to determine what kind of food the sow bug prefers; decaying leaves, potatoes, grapes, or sow bug food. Hypothesis If a sow bug is placed in a choice tray, and has access to decaying leaves, potatoes, grapes, and sow bug food, the sow bug will choose the decaying leaves over its other options. This hypothesis was based on research stating that a sow bug s main food source is decaying vegetation. This is the food they are accustomed to and therefore will select over the other three options which they rarely if ever would have access to. This information would suggest that the sow bugs were not especially interested in food at the time the experiment took place. The data gathered might not have been conclusive in discovering the preferred food source of sow bugs, but it at least showed that the decaying leaves were what they were attracted to for whatever reason. This information could be used in a variety of different ways. It would be helpful in pest control as well as in keeping a sow bug alive. For people who consider sow bugs a nuisance, the data could reduce the population of sow bugs in certain areas by removing the decaying leaves. This would make the habitat less inviting and therefore discourage the presence of sow bugs. When relating the information to a wider variety of topics, even though the information was not conclusive, it came to attention that the preference of habitat or food source in sow bugs has a major effect on the areas in which they live and on the organisms survival. Whether it is because of food and/or environmental related issues the fact that the sow bugs preferred to reside in and

As a student, a pupil of all that there is to learn, one will ask questions. This is what Socratesdid. Euthyphrowas a theologian that was acquainted with Socrates through means unknown. Similarities Between Bhutto And Catt Both the Address by Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto and and Carrie Chapman Catt s Address to the Congress on Women s suffrage explain the importance of women s rights. Bhutto and Catt use similar techniques to convey their message and convince the audience of its importance. Bhutto and Catt use the persuasive techniques of pathos, and logos. Bhutto uses pathos to appeal to the audience s emotions, where the daughters are more malnourished than the sons, for the daughters get to eat the leftovers ( Bhutto). She offers real world examples about how society immorally treats women, while using a depressing tone, making the reader feel sorrowful and compassionate for women. Bhutto used statistical information, comparing boys and girls treatment in different countries, today two thirds of the world s illiterate population are women ( Bhutto). By the use of logos Bhutto proves her claim of the need of gender equality, and appeals to the audience s reasoning. Catt uses logos by discussing the hypocrisy of the founding fathers, who left Great Britain because of taxation without representation, yet did not mention women suffrage in the constitution. When Nick says The whole damn bunch put together , he is mostly referring to Gatsby, Daisy, Tom and Jordan. Daisy is his cousin and that makes Tom family by marriage. Jordan is a woman Nick had a romantic relationship with. For Nick to say that Gatsby, out of all these people, is the best out of them shows a lot about Nick and his feelings toward Gatsby. Most people will choose their family or someone they are romantically involved with over a friend. Thus proving that Gatsby is more than a friend to Nick. This statement can also be controversial because Gatsby is not a saint. Daisy, Tom, and Jordan are all terrible people. Daisy lead on two men at the same time, one being her husband. After reading the article it is safe to say that Mr. Watanabe had some serious issues. Not only did he have a serious gambling problem, he also had a drinking and drug problem. These two together is not a good combination. This was not your normal gamblingissue, this was the biggest loss in Vegas history of 127 million dollars! Seeing this from an outsider s perspective, there are two different ways you can look at the situation. You can either feel sorry for him and feel that he was treated wrongly and unlawfully, or one can feel no remorse for him and that he brought it all upon himself. After much thought, I have a firm stance that what was going on in those casinos was one, illegal and two, outright just wrong. Mr. Watanabe was absolutely taken advantage of. As a young boy Mr. Watanabe had a wealthy family was a very successful business man and was a chief executor of his father s business by the age of 20. After years of owning this business he sold it for millions and decided he wanted to have fun for a while and be stress free. Gambling is fun, right? He began gambling at a Harrah s casino in Iowa back in 2003. He was one of the casinos biggest gamblers at the casino and everyone knew him very well there. In 1971 actor and director Melvin Van Peebles wrote, produced, starred in, and composed the soundtrack for the film Sweet Sweetback s Badasssss Song . Fifty six percent of Americans would feel safer if more people carried concealed weapons (Ingraham). Now that s not an overwhelming number, but anything over fifty percent is still a number that gets your attention. The reason for this is there have been a rise in shootings. • 23. Analysis Of Covers The Ground By Gary Snyder Title To people foreign to California, the state is boxed into a set of stereotypical characteristics. The Golden State has received labels such as surf nation, and liberal land. But to those who ve gotten a chance to live within this great state appreciate the opportunities and ambitions that come with living in California. Furthermore, what truly differentiates California from any other place in the world is the consistent paradoxical environment. This notion is best epitomized by the city of Sacramento and the cultural, economic and social change that the city has undergone. Gary Snyder communicates this theme through building around John Muir s ideologies in his work of Covers The Ground. Snyder s work exemplifies the contradiction between nature and innovation. It presents the paradoxical state individuals around the world face on whether to accept the innovation and accept the benefits that come with it, or stay true to the roots of nature and the history that accompanies it. This dilemma boils down to whether we as a race embrace the progression of time and the paradoxes that follow, or we find solace in our current state. The inception of Covers The Ground, begins with establishing the setting of the city of Sacramento. • 24. A Report On Traditional Neighbourhood Search Methods Initial Population: We originally decide the size of the population, and then the method by which the members for the population are chosen. The primary idea of the size of the population always forms a trade off between the efficiency and the effectiveness of GA implementation. In general, it appears that there should be some ideal value for a given length or size of the population, on the grounds that too little a population would not permit adequate opportunity for exploring the search space effectively, while too big a population would damage the efficiency of the approach that no solution could be expected in an realistic amount of time limit [15]. Termination Condition: Traditional neighbourhood search methods are simple in the sense that they terminate when a local optimum is encountered. On the other hand, GAs are blind search stochastic optimization techniques that could in principle run for endlessly, but could converge fast to the solution with right termination criteria set. In practice, a termination criterion is mandatory to prevent the iterations get infinite; the common practices are to set a limit on the number of fitness evaluations or the computation time consumed, or to track the variability in the population and stop when this falls below a pre set boundary value. • 25. International Contracts And International Sale Contracts A conflict of laws is a major issue that usually arises in international commercial transactions. International characters in the transaction create questions, such as which court has jurisdiction over the case, which law is applicable to the case and will the judgment enforceable. One possible way to avoid the risk of a conflict of laws is to harmonise laws relating to international sales into uniform law or a convention for worldwide adoption. The United NationsConvention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods (CISG), known as the Vienna Convention, is one of the results from the harmonisation of international trade law. Although there are many supports to this convention, the argument of its effectiveness still continues and some countries still not ratify. International sale contracts are not quite similar to domestic sale contracts as the international character cannot be found in domestic contracts. The first character is the movement of goods which travel from one state to another state, no matter where the seller s and the buyer s places of business are. Another character is the different places of business of both parties which means that both parties have different legal systems. The Japanese perpetuated the notions that foreign powers constantly invaded Korea, that Korean political leadership regularly fought amongst themselves, that the ruling elite continually oppressed its people, and that Korea was a cultural extension of China. However, these beliefs about Korean history are largely inaccurate. In fact, while Korea was a comparatively small country, it had the ability to defend itself from foreign attacks through direct combat and diplomatic means. Also, Korean political structure and ideologies enabled prolonged periods of stability despite internal conflict, allowing Korean dynasties to last longer than Chinese ones. The Smokescreen as defined by the author Joe Cardona from the Miami Herald, is the lack of liability Amendment 2 brought to the table when it hit the polls in October. Torque is the measure of how much force is acting on an object and how that causes the object to rotate. (What is torque). Rotating the wheels of a car is torque and that helps the car get up to speed faster. Many performance cars have very fast 0 60 mph speeds, like the corvette, challenger and exotic cars like the Porsche, Bentley, Ashton Martin etc. Everyone wants to know exactly what torque does; it is basically the amount of turning power you have, basically like using a wrench. When looking at car specifications, the torque that is shown is the maximum torque of the internal combustion engine. The torque can tell a lot about how fast can actually accelerate. For example, if 500 newton meters is the toque that the tires experience, the mass of a typical car is 1500 kg, and the distance between the center of mass of the car and the wheels rotational axis is about 20 cm, the moment of inertia I about 60 kg. Therefore the acceleration of the car is 4.25 m/s^2, meaning it can go 0 60 mph in 6.3 seconds. (What does torque in a car do). Car racing is a big part of torque; rotational motion in automobile racing is when the wheel turns through revolutions throughout the race. The motor rotates in what is called as RPM. Consequently, the instructions are carried out of the nucleus to the ribosomes. This point of location of the DNA molecule is called a gene. Genes act as a pattern for another type of nucleic acid called RNA. Instead of a thymine as in DNA, each adenine of the unzipped DNA attracts a uracil, U. The other bases follow the same pattern as in DNA i.e., G, T, and C attract the same partners C, A and G. The single chain of nucleotides which is newly formed is called messenger RNA and its formation is called as transcription. mRNA carries an exact duplicate of the information recorded in the DNA and leaves the nucleus with the instructions. The mRNA molecules are attracted to the ribosomes in the cytoplasm. Another smaller kind of RNA molecules called transfer RNA (tRNA.) also is there in the cytoplasm. Only one kind of amino acid can be attached to one end of a tRNA molecule while the other end carries a distinctive tag to identify it. The strand of mRNA lines up at the ribosome and the base pairs are attracted to their partners again. The attraction between the mRNA and the tRNA compliments each other. A triplet sequence of mRNA transcript codes for a specific amino acid and the sequence is called a codon. A corresponding triplet sequence on the transfer RNA (tRNA) called as ... • 38. Sexism In Video Games Video Games. Video Gaming has been a popular form of entertainment in modern pop culture since the early 1980 s. From the early beginnings of software producers such as Nintendo, they have been creating games that have become favorable classics in only a few decades. With the most popular classic video games including Super Mario Bros. (1985), Donkey Kong (1981), Pac Man (1980), and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (1998), we can quickly note some patterns. One of the patterns that we can note is all of the main playable protagonists within these games are male. The second pattern that we can note is the majority of the games listed above have a storyline written about rescuing a princess one of the only notable female characters within the game. Along with this, the female characters are only story advancing non playable characters (NPC s). When the online gaming community was first introduced and popularized in the early 2000 s, females in the gaming community quickly faced another obstacle; sexism. Anonymity within the gaming community has become more than a tactic to hide your identity. For the majority of female gamers in the gaming community, anonymity has become a crucial aid to avoid sexist comments and actions from other online players. According to a 2006 Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) report, women who were aged between 25 34 were out playing males during non console competitive gaming. Also from this report, we can note that in the UK women have ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Globalization Assignment Written Assignment Unit 7 POLS 1503 Globalization Introduction As our world becomes more connected, the free travel of people and goods continue to rise in dramatic fashion. There are many benefits such as increased trade, improved access to imported goods, increased tourism and exposure to new cultures. With these benefits comes a risk of bringing diseases across international borders. International travel and trade has brought new challenges to public health care, and the threat of deadly illnesses spreading rapidly. If the movement of people, food, and manufactured goods can have such a negative impact on public health, should steps be taken to reduce these flows? There are always risks with travel and imports. The benefits to the economy and increased access to goods are worth the risks. However, in cases of emergency, it is completely reasonable to limit trade and travel from affected areas. When cases of mad cow disease are detected, it is common to block imports from the affect nations (Levin Institute, 2017a). During the outbreak of ebola in Africa in 2014, the Obama administration opted for a temporary travel ban from west Africa (Roberts, 2014). During the threat of an epidemic spreading across borders, extreme measures have to be taken. What other options are there for lowering the spread of global diseases? Sometime in 18th century, a famous musician that goes by the name Wolfgang Mozart received his musical education at a ripe age of four. At the age of 5 he was presented as a child prodigy and performed throughout Europe for his first musical tour. By age 6, Mozart was already performing for the Austrian royals at the Hall of Mirrors. Come to think of it, he started composing, singing, and playing for nobles before most kids started their education. Thus, parental background might play a role in how likely the children will start their education early. The education that children receive is very much correlated to the education that their parents received when they were children. Research shows that the literacy of their parents strongly affects the education of their children. One reason for this is that parents who have gone beyond a high school education are found to be more involved with their infants and children than those who did not finish high school...many less educated parents simply have more unmanaged stress in their lives, and this stress interferes with ability and opportunity to interact with their child (Paulsen et al. 2002). Typically, parents who have finished high school and gone on to receive additional schooling understand the need to have a higher education and are more equipped to guide their children when they go through school. And logically, that makes sense. The more time parents spend making money, the less time they have helping their child s education. But while it could be reasoned that early college preparation pertains more exclusively to students who have parents that undergone higher education, it can t be the only reason for correlation does not mean causation. Could it be there s something innately wrong with the person on a primal level, or maybe a psychopath is someone so scarred by their past they forget what it is to feel. By definition, a psychopath and a sociopath are both mentally ill people with a tendency to act violent without guilt or remorse. There s subtle differences between the two like the amount of planning or spontaneity in their violence, but the two words get used interchangeably most of the time. A Study A Year After The Repeal Of Dadt A study by the Palm Center, a research branch from the University of California Los Angeles Law School, conducted a study a year after the repeal of DADT. The research group wanted to discover what impacts the repeal has done to the military and according to their findings they concluded: (1) The repeal of DADT has had no overall negative impact on militaryreadiness or its component dimensions, including cohesion, recruitment, retention, assaults, harassment or morale. (2) A comparison of 2011 pre repeal and 2012 post repeal survey data shows that service members reported the same level of military readiness after DADT repeal as before it. (3) Even in those units that included openly LGB service members, and that consequently should have been the most likely to experience a drop in cohesion as a result of repeal, cohesion did not decline after the new policy of open service was put into place. In fact, greater openness and honesty resulting from repeal seem to have promoted increased understanding, respect and acceptance. (4) Recruitment was unaffected by the repeal of DADT. In an era when enlistment standards are tightening, service wide recruitment has remained robust. (5) Retention was unaffected by the repeal of DADT. There was no mass exodus of military members as a result of repeal, and there were only two verifiable resignations linked to the policy change, both military chaplains. Facilitated diffusion is diffusion using a protein to help. Osmosis involves water and a selectively permeable membrane. Water is diffused in and out the membrane (Liu, Amagai, Chelen, n.d.). Diffusion is the process of molecules moving from an area of high concentration of the kind of molecule to one of a low concentration (Liu, Amagai, Chelen, n.d.). An example of diffusion is when someone sprays perfume on in a corner. The perfume will travel to every corner of the room until it is spread evenly across it. Diffusion s purpose is to have a particle be spread evenly by moving to a high to low concentration (Liu, Amagai, Chelen, n.d.). Facilitated diffusion is diffusion, but has protein to help larger molecules move through the membrane. While it may seem to use energy due to it using a protein, it actually doesn t require energy. The Basics On Corrective Eye Surgery The basics on corrective eye surgery Before contact lenses finally became popular in the 50 s, eyeglasses had been the only practical way to correct refraction vision errors. Now however, there are several modern ways when it comes to correcting vision problems including corrective eye surgery. Corrective eye surgery ranges from laser reshaping of the eye surface known as LASIK and PRK to a surgically inserted artificial lens that corrects the eyesight. This was carried out in order to change the curvature of the cornea itself. This procedure was also known as surface ablation and was actually performed outside of the U.S during the 1980 s receiving FDA approval around 1995. Photorefractive Keratectomy is still commonly used today however LASIK is far more popular although Photorefractive Keratectomy has made a comeback of sorts in recent years due to studies showing that it produces very similar results to LASIK. On top of this, research has shown that nerve regeneration within the eye s surface takes place faster with Photorefractive Keratectomy than with LASIK which could help reduce dry eye symptoms along with other such complications associated with laser eye surgery. Dan Taggart calls the kittens, scraggy wee shits which shows that he doesn t care about the killing of the kittens and treats them as waste to be got rid of. He justifies his actions by suggesting the kittens have no value. A dunghill can be used for getting rid of dung and the kittens are sluiced on the dunghill. The word sluiced means flushed indicating a toilet, so the kittens are therefore treated as waste. Throughout the poem we are viewing the killing through Heaney s eyes and it is evident that he does not like the killing as he uses words such as soft , tiny and frail to suggest the kittens are innocent and harmless. The words, For days I sadly hung round the yard, watching the three sogged remains and the fear came back suggest he was affected by the carnage and murder he witnessed. Texting while driving a vehicle has now replaced drinking while driving as the leading cause of accidents and deaths of teenage drivers. Texting in traffic isn t simply a problem among teens and 47% of adults admit that they text while driving. Texting drivers are 23 times more likely to be involved in a crash than non texting drivers (Driving while Texting Six Times More Dangerous than Driving while Drunk, 2014). A mobile phone while driving is not only physically distracting, but visually distracting as well. A driver is physically distracted as their hand is moved from the steering wheel to pick up the phone, answer or end the call, or type a message. A mobile phone visually distracts the driver as their eyes are taken off the road to look at the phone, when typing a message or reading (Service, 2013). As a vehicle s speed increases, so does the distance travelled during the driver s reaction time and the distance needed to stop. Also, the higher the speed, the greater the amount of kinetic energy that must be absorbed by the impact in a crash. Therefore, as well as being identified as a causal factor in around 40 % of fatal crashes, speed is an aggravating factor in the severity of all crashes. Moore explores different aspects of gun culture such as receiving free guns from a bank, taking a look at America s violent history, and interviewing important people like Charlton Heston, former president of the National Rifle Association. The film ultimately comes to the conclusion that the American culture of fear along with the accessibility of guns is the reason why there are so many gun related deaths. Quantitative easing is a technique used by central banks to boost money supply in an economy when interest rates are close to or at zero thus cannot be reduced further (Woelfel, 1994). With this insight in mind, the remaining part of this essay seeks to critically examine the methods of implementing monetary policy when interest rates are close to or at zero. Monetary Policy Options at the Zero Bound Interest rates have the lowest bound at zero mark. When this limit is reached, serious problems occur in designing appropriate monetary policy approaches since interest rates can never be set below this mark. Countries like Japan, United States and Switzerland have faced this challenge in the recent past thus calling for alternative approaches to monetary policy when the nominal interestrate is close or at zero.
