makes jokes out of using knives instead of guns. She also brings up the fact that
she enjoys taunting her gun nut friends. Nonetheless, if her audience was for pro
gun community, I would have left out the mockery of them. Overall though, I feel
like her persona was great throughout this piece. Whether it was intended for pro
gun or anti gun, she got her voice out to someone. She starts out sarcastic and
humorous, then gets serious as the topic goes on. This makes it easier for her
audience to get on board rather than boring them in the first couple sentences. Her
points on the benefits of guns use make her piece more entertaining by giving a
little laugh as well as bringing up matters that many people would never think of.
The examples that Ivins mentions does a very good job of making the audience

as high relief. Unlike low relief, high relief purposely projects its subjects from the

With the recent surge in wireless communications, the radio industry has seen an
increase in the number of different communication standards each requiring its own
specific hardware and processing. Our project addresses the need for radio
interoperability with these various standards through the development of hardware
generators for a software defined radio (SDR) system. These hardware generators
will be created using Chisel, a hardware construction language. When given a set of
parameters or constraints, the hardware generators will automatically output
circuit designs for the given application thereby accelerating the hardware design
process and introducing a new method for multi standard support. Specifically, our
team will focus on the development of generators for the system s beamforming
and MIMO blocks. For this reporting period, our team was responsible for updating
our previous CORDIC block for incorporation in the carrier frequency offset
correction (CFO) block. To refresh, the CORDIC block is simply a set of hardware
efficient algorithms capable of performing hyperbolic and trigonometric calculations
without the use of a hardware multiplier. By avoiding use of hardware multipliers,
the CORDIC architecture reduces the number of logic gates required to perform
these trigonometric calculations thereby saving significant circuit power and area in

Sympathy verses Judgment in Carol Ann Duffy s poem Salome
The poem Salome by Carol Ann Duffy is written from the perspective of Salome, a
promiscuous woman who is retelling her drunken night. Although it is unclear
whom Salome is speaking to, she tells her story using informal, colloquial
language, as if conversing to a group of friends. Duffy uses Biblical allusions,
which suggest that the speaker can be considered a reflection of the Biblical
character Salome, who appears in the New Testament and is infamous for
demanding the head of John the Baptist. Although Duffy seems to be retelling the
traditional story of Salome, she depicts Salome as a modern figure. The following
analysis will explore the Biblical allusions in Duffy s poem, which help to determine
what the poem is about, and moreover will explore how Duffy uses the dramatic
monologue to provoke the reader to have sympathy for Salome. I thus contend that
Duffy takes the reader into the mind of Salome, a character that has traditionally been
portrayed as an evil, amoral woman, in order for the reader to view her from a
perspective of sympathy rather than judgment.
As stated, rather than depicting Salome as a completely wicked and cynical character,
Duffy provides indications that the reader is meant to sympathize with her. This is
hinted at in the language that Duffy uses and the different tones in each stanza,

mannerisms on a day to day basis. Stemming from these controlled mannerisms are
social norms. Social norms are the traits that have come to be typical over time
because they have been shaped by our surroundings and our everyday interactions.
When a norm is broken, society reacts by entering into shock. In a social
experiment, I tested the reaction of society when I broke a social norm. For my
experiment, I violated a folkway. I went to get my hair cut at my normal salon.
This salon is an upscale, boutique blow dry bar and salon. There were many
women in there who were getting their hair done. I have been going to that salon
for years, and have come to know all of the employees and stylists. I had an
appointment with my regular stylist who has cut my hair ever since I was little. I
usually always go for a trim of about an inch and a blow dry after. This time, when

I believe that industrialization was generally beneficial to the lives of the American
people and the history of the United States. Several of the advantages are outlined in
the above paragraph. Overall, Americans enjoyed a higher standard of living and a
longer life span, thanks to the Industrial Revolution. ...before the eighteenth century

the mid nineteenth century such growth was an established fact of life: for the first

In this brief paper, we have discussed two elements of industrialization that positively
affected American lives and two elements of industrialization that negatively affected
American lives. One of these negative elements was the employment of children in
the industrial arena. The second negative aspect was that the roots of our
environmentally challenged society stemmed from the Industrial Revolution.
From a positive stance, American grew and prospered economically, and became a
superpower on the world stage. Laws governing child labor were enacted and in
general the population became healthier and enjoyed a longer life span.

In the text the script is very lengthy and descriptive. Luhrmann has strategically
pulled out the most powerful and key lines to emphasise the desperation for escape
Juliet is looking for. In the text Juliet comes across as calm, defeated and longing
for help, although in the movie she is violent and extremely snappy. This is seen
when she puts a gun to her heads and screams to Friar, I LONG TO DIE! Juliet is
depicted as stuck up and sassy in the text however is obedient at first and somewhat
aggressive as the scene progresses throughout the movie. Baz Luhrmann uses soft,
creepy yet holy music throughout the scene and when Juliet raises the gun the music
gets louder and reaches its climax. Juliet is dressed in dark colours, portraying how
depressed she is feeling. This shows contrast as she is usually dressed in white,

The Canterbury Tales are told in the passage of a Pilgrimage to Canterbury. We see
that these characters all interact with one another, they all have different points of
view on several topics. The portraits [of the pilgrims] which appear in the General
Prologue have a decided togetherness, that the portraits exist as parts of a unity
(Hoffman 492), Their actions and their tales should be thought about in context, who
tells the tale, what is their age, what is his or her profession and how he or she
interacts with other characters. They each have their own maistrie, they all have
mastery over something that influences their own distinct personalities. Thus, how
these personalities and maistries mesh with each other is incredibly important to
further understand the tales themselves and the reasons behind why each character
