The document discusses the openings of several thriller films and how they use sound and editing techniques to set tension and suspense. For Source Code, there is exaggerated train sounds to build tension. Inception uses loud water sounds and a lens flare to set an eerie scene. Prisoners starts silently but then a gunshot sound loudly kills tension. Shutter Island uses eerie music during flashbacks and a countdown music to draw attention. Seven has enhanced kitchen and radio sounds to feel important while rainy outside contrasts the dark mood. Hanna uses enhanced footsteps during a fight and eerie music to foreshadow the ending.
2. Source Code
• There is music at the beginning of the sequence as long as
there is an image of the buildings and landscape.
• There is a quick cut to the man on a train asleep and then
wakes up suddenly. The noise at this part goes deeper and
louder and its exaggerated. The sound is also exaggerated
when other trains go past the train that the man is on and
cause tension between the character himself and the
audience.
3. Inception
• There are water sounds at the beginning quite loud and it blocks out any other sounds.
• There is a lens flare in the
camera which suggests
that its daytime.
• Low Key lighting to
suggest an eerie, dark place.
• Not much is in focus to
suggest a blurred vision of
what's happening.
• Spooky music in the
background to set the scene.
• Enhanced sounds in the background
4. Prisoners
• It’s silent and all you can hear is the narrative in the background
and a dear walking across the wood. This causes tension within the
very first scene of the opening sequence. The camera then zooms
further out and we see a bigger picture of what’s happening.
• We can then hear a loud, embraced sound of the gun shooting the
dear in the wood.
• We can hear the radio in the car in the background of the family
talking and the little girl humming. This causes suspense between
us and the characters , and also the camera angle is from the POV
of the someone in the car which we assume is not meant to be
there as the camera is low and almost hidden.
5. Shutter Island
• Water sound at the very start match the visuals of the
main character shaking and trying to motivate himself
not to be sick and stay calm.
• Eerie music in the background suggests suspense.
• Quick Cuts when the camera shows the flashback to
when his wife was alive which and as it is so quick we
don’t quite get a full picture of what is happening.
• There is deep, eerie music when they see the police/
guards on the edge of the island which then
foreshadows what I going to happen next in the film.
• When they drive up to the gates of the center, there is
music as if its counting down to something important
which makes us keep attention.
6. Seven
• The slight Kitchen sounds in the first scene (tap,
footsteps, putting things down etc…) and
walking, tying tie etc are herd very clearly in the
background of the characters as its so silent.
• Low Key Lighting, causing suspense.
• There is a radio in the background and walkie
talkie sounds coming from the two guards which
make us feel like they are very important within
there job and they are busy finding out about the
crime.
• There is people in the background of the person
walking in the center of the shot in the dark
landing with blood in the background and only
one bulb to light up the room.
• Outside it is raining which is juxtaposing the fact
that it’s a negative mood but rain is quite a
calming sound.
• Quick cuts- cause tension and in the credits
which causes the audience to pay attention.
7. Hanna
• Panning camera
• Blurred camera angles to show fast pace running
• Lens flare in the camera to suggest power through the sun
• Shaky camera to show anger and fast pace running.
• Sound effects to enhances noises within the fight.
• Footsteps sounds enhanced
• High angle camera angle used when looking down on the dear and
the girl. Suggesting that the girl is just as important as an animal.
• Wind and clock enhanced to embrace suspense.
• Eerie music when looking at the house, may foreshadow the ending
• Low Key lighting.
• At the beginning there is no sounds at all except from storm kind of
sounds and bubbling coming from the sky.
• A swan coming out of the water suggest calmness which is the
opposite to the storyline and what is going to happen.
