Opening scene analysis
Tanya Telukunta
The first scene of the film shows a close up of woman with
a beaten face, breathing heavily with the veil of a her
wedding dress covered in blood. This connotes that she is
the main character in this film. The sound of someone
walking towards her can be heard, this connotes to the
audience that danger could be approaching, which could be
the person who has hurt her.
The footsteps stop, and handkerchief with the name
‘Bill’ embroidered into it. This connotes to the
audience that he may be the person who caused her
this pain. The use of black and white footage is a
convention of thriller, as it can connate danger or a
flashback. The use of blood is a convention of thriller
films
The character says “Bill it’s your baby” which confirms
to the audience that it in fact bill, who has caused this
pain and injury to the character. We also learn that Bill
and the character know each other, and were involved
with each other.Bill shoots her in the head after she
says her line, this is a convention of thriller, as it a
sudden action, which creates a jump scare and it
makes the audience question what is going to happen
next.
The sound of gun being cocked can be heard, the
woman’s facial expression changed to more alert and
scared. This connotes to the audience something
dangerous might happen next. The use of a weapon
being drawn or prepared is common conventions
used in thriller, it builds tension for the audience as it
siginfies that danger is near
In this scene we just seen a silhouette of a person lying on
a bed, we don't know who this could be,possibly Bill. The
use of low lighting is a convention on thriller films, due to
this convention the audience can not tell who the person is,
which builds tension which is another convention of
Thriller.
The scene then cuts to the title sequence uses bold white
font, which signifies power, darkness and death to the
audience. The bold font emphasises the sense of danger
and death. The title suggest to the audience that the film is
about Bill. The soundtrack is a slow guitar piece with a
western sound to it, this builds on the tension and also
helps set the scene of where this may be taking place. The
lyrics also reflect the shooting with the lyrics “He shot me
down bang bnag” which refers to the scene before hand.
The first scene shows a close up of a
child's china tea set, this connotes that this
may be set in an older period of time rather
than present. This also connotes that
children are involved in the film, and they
may be the main characters.
Three young children are seen in the
long shot, they are seen to be wearing
white or light colours which connote
pureness and innocence, which is a
convention of children in thriller films.
The background has an old pram, which
connotes to the audience that the film is
set in a later period of time. The room
they are is clearly high up due to the
curve in the ceiling which could mean
they are in an attic.
Suddenly all 3 girls turn towards the
camera, but all that can be heard is the
soundtrack, which become louder and
sinister when the girls turn. It is clear
they are looking at something, but the
audience is not sure what, which builds
tension. Hiding character (majority of
the time the antagonist) is a common
convention of Thriller films
The scene then cus to the girl looking
at the window, this connotes that what
they were looking at must have
directed them towards this. This builds
tension as we don’t know what they
are going to do, but the fact they are
looking at the window connotes that it
might involve the window, and it could
be foreshadowing the next
scene/s.The music in the background
start to get louder which signifies
danger
A close up is used to show the girl geting up
and the cup dropping out of her hand. This
signifies danger as they were just looking at the
window this could signify they are walking
towards the window, which builds tension for
the audience as they don't know what is going
to happen next. The shattering of the cup could
connote what is going to happen next to the
girls. The music starts to get louder which builds
tension and starts to sounder darker. This
scene also connotes to the audience that they
may have been possessed which is common in
thriller films
The girls jump out the window at the same
time, the music stops and a dramatic sound
effect is played as they jump. The sound
effect fades and the first sound can be
heard, a scream, followed by the words “my
baby”,which is followed by a Dolly zoom out
shot showing the empty room. This builds
suspense as the audience don't actually
know what caused the girls to jump, leaving
them in suspense.
This is the opening scene of the film, a mid shot is
used, there is a woman climbing up a rope. This
connotes to the audience that she may be the main
character. The soundtrack is dramatic which builds
tension as the audience does not know why she is
climbing that rope. She could be running away from
something, however her clothes connote that she could
be training as her jumper is covered in sweat, as she is
not rushing her actions
A long shot is use to show her running, this sets
the scene for the audience, but this also builds
tension due to the dark lighting not making clear
what is ahead of her, which could be danger.
The Trees and fog connote that she is in a
forest but most likely during early morning due
to the fog. She’s not running particularly fast,
more of a jog, which connotes that she is
training rather than running away from
something, which reduces the tension slightly
In this scene we see the woman climbing up a rope net,
which is part of classic army training. This connotes that
she is training and is athletic, which is a counter type of
woman, as they are stereotypically represented as weak
and unathletic. This also shows she is skilled, and is
strong, as she flips over the net once she has climbed
over it, which is another counter type of woman in Thriller.
The close up show that she is not panicked but
determined, which connotes that she is training. This is
counter type as stereotypically women are seen to do
more office based jobs, or stay at home to look after
children, they are very rarely seen to be doing physical
training. This makes the audience wonder what she is
training for.
This men appears from behind her yelling her second
name which also connotes she is in a training camp, which
reduces the tension for the audience. He is also wearing
an FBI hat which connotes that she could be training for
them. He tell her that “Crawford wants to see you in his
office” This builds tension as the audience don’t know
why she needs to go to his office.
The bold font of the credits, connote authority, and the use
of the colour black connote power. Which Is a convention
of thriller films. In the background you can see other
students climbing walls wearing similar clothing to the girl,
which connotes she is at training camp, most likely for the
FBI.This connotes that she may be interested in working
with the company
The opening shot is a picture of two hands
deformed stuck into a book with tape. This lacks
the formality of a police report, connoting that
this is the work of someone else, which builds
tension for the audience as they don't know who
has done this. It also does not specify who has
done this, which builds more tension.
A close up of rough and dirty hands holding a
blade. The scene shows the person peeling
skin of their fingers, which connotes to the
audience that the character may be
psychologically ill and they enjoy mutilation.
The fact that their hand are rough connotes
that they have done a lot of heavy labour/
strenuous work.
In the opening sequence there is a quick flash of
this image. It shows a child with a abused face, this
builds tension as it’s only on the screen for a brief
moment, which make the audience wonder what is
going on and who has causes this. The fact that the
image is a child connotes that the person who has
caused this has no mercy, or morals, which in a
common convention of Thriller films.
The shot show someone writing, this is a
convention of psychopaths, they tend to write
everything down or nothing at all. This
connotes to the audience that they like to keep
notes of what they doing, which signifies
organisation, and clear plans.
The shot shows that person sewing their
journal, which connotes to the audience that
they are crafty, skilled and hands on, which is
another convention of a psychopath. This
contrast the early shot of them holding the
blade with their hands, as the shots show that
while their hands are dirty, they like their
personal possessions to be clean and tidy,
which is another convention of psychopath.
This shot shows a picture of a boy/man with
something impaled into the back of their, it is
stuck in like the picture at the beginning of the
opening scene, which connotes that someone
has taken a picture. From the previous picture
and scenes the audience can connte that the
same person may have done this. This is a
stereotypical presentation of psychopaths, they
enjoy hurting people, this also builds tension
as the audience does not know why or who
has done this.
