Peter Saul (born August 16, 1934) is an American painter. His work has connections with Pop Art, Surrealism, and Expressionism. His early use of pop culture cartoon references in the late 1950s and very early 1960s situates him as one of the fathers of the Pop Art movement. He realised about 800 paintings during his career.
An introduction to African American painters and sculptors working in the nineteenth century, including Joshua Johnson, Robert Duncanson, Grafton Tyler Brown, Edward Mitchell Bannister, Edmonia Lewis, and Henry Ossawa Tanner.
Stass Paraskos was a pioneer of modern art in Cyprus. But he was also a significant figure in the British art world of the 1950s and 1960s. As well as teaching at the radical art school Leeds College of Art, he was prosecuted by the British police in 1966 for displaying obscene paintings. The trial was an international cause celebre that led to a change in the law on obscenity and the arts in Britain. Paraskos was the founder of the first art school in Cyprus, the Cyprus College of Art, in 1969, and in his own work he chronicled the traumas of Cyprus, from its difficult birth out of the British Empire and colonialism, through its civil war and invasion by Turkey in 1974, to the inhuman treatment on the island of women and asylum seekers. Shunned still by the art establishment in Cyprus - the two main modern art galleries in Cyprus, the Leventis Art Museum and the Nicosia Municipal Art Gallery (NiMAC) still refuse to show his work - Paraskos saw himself as a perpetual outsider, a self-proclaimed anarchist who did not believe it was the job of art or artists to toe the line.
Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

2. I was born on July 25, 1844 in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. I grew up in a wealthy family. My father was a writing master so while growing up I observed my father at work and learned many skills, which I would use in my art.
3. I graduated from Central High School and in 1861 attended The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. From 1864-1865 I attended Jefferson Medical College. I wanted to become a surgeon. From 1866 to 1870 I traveled to Paris to learn more about art and I was exposed
4. I spent 6 months in Spain where I learned a lot about art and attempted my first large oil painting. Upon returning to America I painted one of my first paintings ever. Max Schmitt in a single scull(1871), Metropolitan
5. I returned to the Pennsylvania Academy in 1876 to teach as a volunteer. In 1878 I became a salaried professor. I was highly influential. I encouraged students to use photography a as an aid to anatomy and the study of motion.
6. By 1880 the Academy’s course was one of the best in the world, because of me. Reason I believed this happened was because I believed in equality so I taught all genders.
7. I was fired in 1886 but I was very popular among the students. They formed the Art Students’ League of Philadelphia. Throughout my teaching career I taught at Art Students League of New York, National Academy of Design, Cooper Union and Art Students’ Guild in Washington D.C.
8. Introduced the camera to the American Art Studio. I learned about photography in France. I produced over 800 photos in my lifetime.
9. I produced a number of large paintings which brought the portrait out of the drawing room and into the offices, streets, parks, rivers, and any outside venue in my city. These active outdoor venues allowed me to paint the subject which most inspired me.
10. A lot of my paintings contained nude people because I was very interested in the human body. The swimming hole (1884-1885) features Eakins’ finest studies of the nude, in my most successfully constructed outdoor picture.
11. My paintings usually contained famous people, relatives and the city of Philadelphia. People around the country could see how the city of Philadelphia was during my time period. I have painted hundreds of paintings. The Gross Clinic,1875, Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. My highest grossing painting.
12. I enjoyed painting family members while they were in their house. I wanted people to know how people acted while in their homes. Miss Amelia Van Buren, ca. 1891, The Phillips Collection Washington D.C.
14. While I was studying the anatomy of horses a friend of mine William O’Donovan asked me to help him with Lincoln and Grant, bronze sculptures. I did the horses and he did the humans.
