- 8. Triangle Trade • Triangle trade is a historical event indicating trade among three ports or regions. Triangular trade usually evolves when a region has export commodities that are not required in the region from which its major imports come. • operated from the late 16th to early 19th centuries, carrying slaves, cash crops, and manufactured goods between West Africa, Caribbean or American colonies. The use of African slaves was fundamental to growing colonial cash crops, which were exported to Europe. European goods, in turn, were used to purchase African slaves, which were then brought on the sea lane west from Africa to the Americas, the so-called Middle Passage • Although the local ports-of-call often varied, a ship’s revolving cargo of slaves, rum, sugar, molasses, tobacco, and other crops were consistent and played vital roles in the trade.

Great Awakening • Great Awakening was an evangelical and revitalization movement that swept Protestant Europe and British America, and especially the American colonies in the 1730s and 1740s, leaving a permanent impact on American Protestantism. It resulted from powerful preaching that gave listeners a sense of deep personal revelation of their need of salvation by Jesus Christ. • It had a major impact in reshaping the Congregational church, the Presbyterian church, the Dutch Reformed Church, and the German Reformed denomination, and strengthened the small Baptist and Methodist Anglican denominations. Throughout the colonies, especially in the south, the revivalist movement increased the number of African slaves and free blacks who were exposed too, and subsequently, converted to, Christianity

Enlightenment • American Enlightenment is a period of intellectual ferment in the thirteen American colonies in the period 1714–1818, which led to the American Revolution, and the creation of the American Republic. • The American Enlightenment applied scientific reasoning to politics, science, and religion, promoted religious tolerance, and restored literature, the arts, and music as important disciplines and professions worthy of study in colleges • Each of the thirteen colonies had a charter, or written agreement between the colony and the king of England or Parliament. • Democracy has been largely influenced by theories from the Enlightenment
