14. • The Age of Awakening was a major rebellion against the
strict teaching of the church. The new faiths that came out of
the Age of Awakening were much more democratic. No one
denomination dominated an area. There was greater
equality and more tolerance about differences. More and
more new Protestant denominations were formed. During
this time people saw themselves as being more capable of
taking care of themselves. Another effect of the Great
Awakening was the growth of the notion of state rule as a
contract with the people This was the first major event that
all the colonies could share.
