3. Significance of the Study
School Administration. The result of the
study will provide the school administration
valuable information especially as regards to
parent’s home nutrition practice that will be
make this basis for planning teachers-
training for parents’ awareness about health
nutrition of the child
School Feeding Coordinators. It will benefit the
teachers as this study serves as an instrument
for them to be heard and provide feedback about
the Parents Home Nutrition Practice and for
formulating plan for training seminars.
Learners. It will make school
feeding recipient learners to
improve their BMI status and make
learners active in eating balance
diet.
4. Significance of the Study
Community and Parents. It is
also expected that the community
will directly and indirectly
benefit from this study. They
will be aware that nutrition
practice at home can be a big
factor that affect on their
child nutritional status.
Researcher. This study will give
the researcher a depth of
understanding and realization of
which parents’ home nutrition
practice could barely effect on
the child nutritional status.
5. Definition of Terms
Parent Home Nutrition Practice. Conceptually, it
refers to parenting practices are “behaviors defined by
specific content and socialization goals. A recent study
found that a number of parenting practices were linked to
improved child diet quality, including
encouragement/modeling of healthy eating, making
healthful foods readily available in the home, and
setting home food rules on snacking type, place, and size
(Darling N., Steinberg L, 2019).
Operationally, this refers to the parents’
home nutrition practice which will be identify
and consider in the study like meal and snacks
routine, modelling, healthy food availability
and accessibility and weight concern
6. Globally, schools are seen
as optimal settings for
health promotion and
interventions for children,
adolescents, and the
broader school
community through
school health programs.
WHO, 2022 defines
malnutrition as
“deficiencies,
excesses or
imbalances in a
person’s intake of
energy and/or
nutrients”. Based on the 2019 Nutritiona
Assessment, Enhanced Basic
Education Information System
(EBEIS), among the 12.7 mill
school children assessed, 13
percent met the standards for
stunted or wasted.

7. Review of Related Literature
The World Health
Organization (WHO)
estimates that by 2025, about
127 million children under five
years old will be stunted,
assuming that current trends
continue.
According to UNICEF, 95
children in the Philippines
die from malnutrition every
day, and 27 out of 1,000
Filipino children do not make
it past their fifth birthday.
The practice of offering
inappropriate food, among
others, always develops
the child's willingness to
consume the food he
wants, even many parents
let whatever food their
child consumes, many
parents serve ready-to-eat
food (Sulistyoningsih,
2011).
8. The role of parents is
the attitude and
behavior of parents in
interacting with
children, the attitudes
and behavior of these
parents can be seen
from the way parents
instill discipline in
children, influencing
emotions and the way
parents control their
children (Sugiyanto,
2015).
Review of Related Literature
The findings on the general
use of strategies that
may not promote
healthy body weight
suggest that work is
needed to develop
culturally and
socioeconomically
effective overweight
prevention programs
(Sherry et al., 2004).
Wasting in children is
associated with a
higher risk of death
if not treated
properly. Among its
neighboring ASEAN
countries, only the
Philippines
recorded a
significant level of
wasted
children,(NNS,
2015).
9. Review of Related Literature
The study of
WHO (2019)
about
educational
attainment of
parents showed
that
malnutrition
was highly
attributed with
low educational
attainment.
It is consistent with the
findings of Nzala et al. (2018)
and the Multiple Indicator
Cluster Survey of 1999-2000
of 6,142 children which
reveals higher incidence of
malnutrition among families
where the mother had a low
educational level.
Turyashemererw
a et al. (2009)
reveal that the
education level of
the
mother/caretaker
was significantly
correlated with
child stunting.
10. Review of Related Literature
Mahgoubet. al (2018) shows similar findings
which revealed that the higher the mother’s level
of education, the lower the level of child
underweight status of malnutrition.
Majority of the family monthly income is
within P1, 000 to P5, 000 (84.6%), which is very
meager to sustain family needs with three (3) or
more than family members (NEDA 2013).
This can be supported by studies (Altman,
Moore, Top, Holland, & Elliot, 1973;
sanjur,1982), that low monthly income affects
purchasing and consumption of foods which can
lead to cases of malnutrition such as stunting
(Triune 1974; Wray, 1971) and wasting) (Grant,
1964).
11. Review of Related Literature
Mahgoubet. al (2017), monthly family income
has direct proportional relationship with
nutritional status which he defines as the
prevalence of malnutrition (underweight, which
decreased significantly as family income
increased.
Nzala et al. (2018) reveals that knowledge
related to promotion of health is essential in
influencing the nutritional status.
children of parents that use fat substitutions, fruit
juice, vegetables, and low-fat foods tend to also
have lower fat food consumption (Cullen, Lara,
& de Moor, 2020).
12. Review of Related Literature
Previous studies note children with higher
preferences for fruits and vegetables (FV) ate
more FV (Vanhala et al., 2018).
Parents who serve FV for lunch and dinner at
home are positively associated with their child’s
intake of FV (Vanhala et al., 2018).
Families where vegetables are served at
meals at home, almost 90% of children
consume vegetables, while only 50% of
children in families not serving vegetables
consume vegetables (Vanhala et al.,
2018).
13. Review of Related Literature
Hugner and Maher (2016) find that even though parents
rated nutrition to be the most important attribute of food for their
children, they still purchase unhealthy foods, and while parents
want to feed their children healthy foods, they may be unaware
of what makes food healthy or unhealthy (Cranfield et al., 2019).
A study by Campbell et al. (2018) found a direct
correlation between maternal knowledge of
healthy foods and feeding their children those
foods, along with making these foods available
in their home.
Campbell et al. (2018) also found an inverse
relationship between maternal knowledge and
feeding children salty snacks and soft drinks.
14. Review of Related Literature
Research supports the notion that parental role
modeling is an effective strategy to help children maintain a
healthy weight; parents with healthy eating and exercise
practices as well as being able to implement changes to
their diet are more likely to have children with healthy
weight (Stevens, 2020).
Chaudhury (2020), children whose parents
are educated up to the tertiary level are
more likely to have a nutritious diet
irrespective on basic child nutrition.

otherwise known as the “Masustansyang Pagkain para sa
Batang Pilipino Act”, signed by President Rodrigo Duterte on
