Themes of Unity in the Grapes
John Steinbeck’s novel, The Grapes of Wrath, is a moving account of the social plight of Dustbowl farmers and is widely considered an
American classic. The novel takes place during the depression of the 1930s in Oklahoma and all points west to California. Steinbeck uses the Joad
family as a specific example of the general plight of the poor farmers. The Joads are forced off of their farm in Oklahoma by the banks and drought,
and they, like many other families of the time, head out for the promised land of California. They endure much hardship along the way, and they
finally make it to California only to find that work is scarce and human labor and life are cheap. Tom Joad, the eldest son in the family, starts the book

Peter Lisca, an extensive critic of Steinbeck’s work, explains “…in is last meeting with his mother, in which he asserts his
spiritual unity with all men, it is evident that he has moved from material and personal resentment to ethical indignation, from particulars to
principles” (Lisca 98). Tom clearly changes his feelings and life goals from selfish to self–less. The power of unity is emphasized through the
main events of the novel when the Joads leave the government camp and in the strike at the peach fields. The best part of their arduous and
depressing stay in California, is when the Joads get a space in the government camp at Weedpatch. The government camp governs and polices itself,
has clean camp spaces and large bathrooms with modern conveniences. Here the migrants are free from the malicious deputies, who continually
beat up the migrants and burn down their paper shacks at the edges of different towns. “When the migrants band together to run the camp at
Weedpatch, a camp that is clean, decent, orderly and without deputy sheriffs from outside, the people are beginning to move toward a social
ideal” (Bowden 199). When the Joads are forced to leave the camp for lack of work and food, they realize the power of the camp as a group of
people as compared to the dangers outside of the camp that they continually face. When Tom is saying goodbye to

Allegories in 'of Mice and Men'
In the novel, 'Of mice and Men', John Steinbeck uses allegory to represent different themes and messages. An allegory is a story, poem or a picture
which can be interpreted to reveal a hidden meaning. While reading Steinbeck's book I noticed different metaphors such as the usage of animals and
Curley's wife. Throughout the whole book the reader can notice many animals mentioned such as rabbits, mice, the puppy and the old dog. Curley's
wife is also a sort of symbol. She represents the way in which the women were treated and looked upon in those days. The animals and Curley's wife
all symbolize different things in life in the 1930's USA. They all symbolize the hopes and the dreams that the characters share which motivates and
drives them... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Saying that the rabbits should be furry, fluffy and colorful makes their life even more padded and warm, which protects them from the tough
world at that time. The animals are a great way to show and symbolize different things. To find the allegorical meaning you only have to look in
between the lines to find a different meaning to the words and sayings. This can be seen in the case of Curley's wife. By looking more closely at
the story, one can see that Curley's wife is also a metaphor which symbolizes the way which other people looked upon women in the society of the
1930's. Curley's wife represents a whole marginalized group in the American society at that time. In the novel, characters are never fully
developed, but instead appear as outlines or symbols of real people. Candy, Crooks, and Curley's wife represent the discriminated groups of age,
race, and sex. Curley's wife has been given an overall picture in the eyes of George and Lennie before they even meet her, by Candy. The picture
Candy paints about her hints at how she tends to give all the men on the ranch 'the eye'. Nobody really knows Curley's wife because nobody ever
talks to her and listens to what she really has to say. Curley's wife wants attention. She wants people to notice her. She is the only woman on the ranch
out of all the men. She wears fancy clothes and nice make up to make her look beautiful and

Of Mice And Men Character Development
Character Development, Symbolism, Author's Message, Oh My! Of Mice and Men, it is not just a band! Of Mice and Men was originally a short novel
written by John Steinbeck in the 1930s. Regardless of the shortness in length, though, it is a rather emotional book with quite a few messages behind
the fictional storyline. These messages, however, cannot be discovered right off the bat. To genuinely absorb the messages the author teaches and
genuinely understand the meaning behind them, one must read the book in its entirety. Steinbeck educates readers about his ideas and messages
through various ideas and literary devices, which includes the development of the characters, symbolism within them, and a bit of imagery to

. . Lennie's so scared all he can think to do is hold on" (Steinbeck 41). Lennie did not know what he was doing wrong, and strangers like the girl who
was wearing the red dress do not know him or his 'disability'. George had explained that the girl was scared because she thought Lennie was trying
to attack her, and after George finally made Lennie release his grip on the dress, they were driven to run and hide so neither of them would get
caught and sent to jail. Children tend to be particularly tactile at a young age, they love to reach out and grab a hold of items that peak their
interest, considering they truly do not know any better. George even says that as well, "He's jes' like a kid. There ain't no more harm in him than a
kid neither, except he's so strong" (Steinbeck 43). Lennie does not realize that he is so strong either, so as he goes about his life he ends up scaring
people, or hurting them, and hurting animals as well, without realizing why. Eventually, Lennie does learn that what he does is wrong, but he still
does not know what exactly happens to cause his wrongdoing. For example, just like Steinbeck explains at the beginning of the book how he
accidentally kills mice as a result of wanting to pet them, as he does not recognize his own strength. He accidentally repeated his past mistakes, and
injured a young pup as well, "Why do you got to get killed? You ain't so little as mice . . . I di'n't

A Character and Moral Study of George Milton: Of Mice and...
In a scientific study, it was found that people are the best version of themselves when they are around other people. However, during the Great
Depression, the idea of human companionship was drowned out by the lonely road that many men walked in search of jobs. This period showed the
true impacts of the loneliness of man and also asked very important questions: are we responsible for the welfare of others? Or is it better to just be
alone? In John Steinheck's novel Of Mice and Men, one of the protagonists, George Milton, struggles with this very concept. Stuck with his disabled
best friend, Lennie Small, he feels a sense of responsibility towards Lennie, but also acknowledges how much easier his life would be without Lennie.
Although... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
George also hid himself and Lennie in an irrigation ditch in Weed after Lennie got in trouble for touching a girl's soft red dress. However, George
also uses his cleverness at the end of the novel after killing Lennie with Carlson's gun. He says that Lennie had Carlson's gun and Lennie had get it
away from him before killing him, which is also a lie. Although Lennie's clever nature often is used in a compassionate way, it must be noted that
he also uses his street smarts for more nefarious and selfish purposes. Outside of George being a man with a lot of common sense and intelligence,
he also is very compassionate. Perhaps not as much as Slim, but almost everything George does is impassioned and driven by his deep care for
Lennie. There is a lot of debate as to whether George killing Lennie was a selfish act. However, George's body language in the last moment of
Lennie's life expresses true caring and even love. John Steinbeck's describes George as stiff and monotonous. He describes George's actions with
Carlson's gun by saying "The hand shook violently, but his face set and his hand steadied" (Steinbeck 106). George was terrified and sorry to kill his
best friend, but realized it had to be done. Whether or not it was a selfless act is another story, but there is no question that some of George's
motivation came from a compassionate place. Another place George displays compassion is how terribly he wants to buy the dream farm, not only for
him, but

development of the characters and the friendship between George and Lennie. He agrees that although George and Lennie 's dream to have a

and friendship can still exist. Topham gives the example of George and Lennie 's friendship as support of this idea. Topham emphasizes that there is

and Lennie 's friendship to support his ideas and opinion of Mice and Men. While Topham does explain

Friendship And Loneliness In John Steinbeck's Of Mice And Men
The characters make dreams that cannot be achieved in John Steinbeck's, Of Mice and Men, where friendship and loneliness are shown by certain
characters in this novella. Friendship is one of the key character traits in the novella. For instance, friendship would be Lennie and George, their
friendship is what holds them together and although Lennie is not smart, George still accompanies him as a friend. Continuously as George play
more tricks on Lennie he began to see how Lennie didn't care for the tricks, he knew he had a friend. Another example would be Candy and his pet.
How candy has had his dog for a while describing how he had his dog since he was a puppy; and how they had herded sheep together. Even though

She was treated poorly which is why she was happy to see that someone had beaten her husband up and she was not allowed to be with the other
guys on the bunkhouse which made her even more lonely. Another example of loneliness would be Candy because his dog was shot by Carlson
for being old and stinky. Therefore, Candy is lonely because his best friend is gone and he has no other friends as good as his dog. Pg.43 "She
knelt in the hay beside him. "Listen," she said. "All the guys got a horseshoe tenement goin' on. It's on'y about four o'clock. None of them guys is
goin' to leave that tenement. Why can't I talk to you? I never get to talk to nobody. I get awful lonely." Lennie said, "Well, I ain't supposed to talk
to you or nothing." "I get lonely," she said. "You can talk to people, but I can't talk to nobody but Curley. Else he gets mad. How'd you like not to
talk to anybody?" Lennie said, "Well, I ain't supposed to. George's scared I'll get in trouble." Pg.22 Candy looked about unhappily. "No," he said
softly. "No, I couldn't do that. I had 'im too long." "He don't have no fun," Carlson insisted. "And he stinks to beat hell. Tell you what. I'll shoot him
for you. Then it won't be you that does it." Candy threw his legs off his bunk. He scratched the white stubble whiskers on his cheek nervously. "I'm
so used to him," he said softly. "I had him from a pup." For this evidence Curly's wife tells Lennie about how she feels lonely and her past events.

Of Mice And Men George's Wife Analysis
Occurring in the time period of the Great Depression, George and Lennie, characters in Of Mice and Men, were wandering ranch hands that were
common of the era. The glimpses that we have about their relationship are very jarring as it seems that George seems to dislike Lennie. This section
where the two talk about their dream reveals a different, unfamiliar aspect of their relationship to the reader. The mood of this dialogue–heavy scene is
almost vulnerable, exposing a gentler side of the characters. As Lennie prompts George to speak about their hopes, "George's voice became deeper. He
repeated his words rhythmically as though he had said them many times before... 'With us it ain't like that. We got a future. We got somebody to talk to

Of Mice and Men-Curleys Wife Analysis
Of Mice and Men is a novel set on a ranch in the Salinas Valley in California, during the Great Depression of the 1930s by John Steinbeck. It was the
first work to bring Steinbeck's national recognition as a writer. The book addresses the real hopes and dreams of working–class America. Steinbeck's
short novel raises the lives of the poor and dispossessed to a higher, symbolic level. The title suggests that plans of Mice and Men often go awry, a
reference to Robert Burn's poem "To a Mouse." Since the novel has been published, it has been called "Vulgar" and "Offensive"; perhaps because of
the way it mentally handicapped people, people of different races (black people) and the way in which women were portrayed. *Of Mice and Men is...

self–obsessed and unable to judge herself and her position honestly, simply unsatisfied.*Curley's wife says 'If I'd went, I wouldn't be livin' like
this, you bet' and this shows that at one point in her life, she had dreamed of being a notable luminary. She also continues to comment on her past
by saying, 'this guy says I was a natural'. This depicts how Curley's wife may be influenced by the American dream so she may still have hope and
dreams to carry out her task which failed in the past. The American dream plays a vital theme constantly throughout the book for other characters on
the ranch too. George and Lennie have their dream of 'livin of the fatha tha lan', which fails in the end as George tragically kills Lennie. They are
perpetually stirred with ideas to satisfy their dream and too eager to accomplish what they started which resulted in them accidentally involving
Crooks and Candy in their fairytale. . Hope is important to all of Steinbeck's characters because it brings strength, joy, peace, unfailing love and most
importantly, rest (relaxation in hard times of the depression was critical). These are qualities the ranch workers lacked and desperately needed

The Lady With The Pet Dog Analysis
"Then they spent a long time taking counsel together, they talked of how to avoid the necessity for secrecy, for deception, for living in different
cities, and not seeing one another for long stretches of time. How could they free themselves from these intolerable fetters?" (Chekhov 224). In
1899, Anton Chekhov wrote "The Lady with the Pet Dog" which tells the story of Dmitry Dmitrich Gurov and Anna Sergeyevna von Didertiz's love
affair through the man's point of view. It is hopeless and immoral, but it is a love that knows no bounds. In 1972, Joyce Carol Oates gave new life to
the lover's story through the woman's point of view in her story "The Lady with the Pet Dog." Although both stories use the same plot and title, there

On the other hand, Oates' retelling takes place in Nantucket, Massachusetts; Albany, New York, and Ohio. It is clear that Nantucket is supposed to be
the United States' own version of Yalta; however, less emphasis is put on the beauty of it. Instead, Oates chooses to highlight its tourism and
romanticism. When the couple is walking around the town, they look "at the other strollers, the weekend visitors, the tourists, the couples like
themselves" (Oates 235). As a result, the magic of Yalta is lost in Nantucket, and part of the romantic aspect is gone, too. Additionally, a year it takes
place is never specified, but based on the year it was written––1972––it probably is somewhere around the late 1900s. This means it happens during
more modern times, and consequently, it is more difficult to feel for the lovers as they live in a time when divorce is more accessible and accepted.
Of course, they have their own reasons for staying with their spouses, but compared to Chekhov's story, their romance is definitely less tragic in that
regard. Because Chekhov's story is more sensible and understandable in terms of setting, this is just one area that proves his story is the better of the
two. Furthermore, while there are some comparisons in characters, Chekhov and Oates have ultimately created characters unique to their stories. In
both stories, the girl's name is Anna, and both her and the man are married to other people. One

Summary Of The Last Lecture By Randy Pausch
When one dies, they are not remembered by their superficial exteriors, but rather how they portrayed themselves and lived their lives. In "The
Last Lecture", Randy Pausch is diagnosed with liver cancer and only has a few months to live. Pausch takes this opportunity to leave his legacy;
however he does not achieve this by wearing fancy clothes or completing a huge feat, he simply tells the story of his life, how he has lived his life
thus far, and what lessons he has learned along the way. Within my life, I have experienced many lessons of my own. I live by each of these
lessons and they have molded me into the person I am today. Everyone has their own legacy to leave in the world, and this is mine. Be kind to
everyone, no matter how ignorant or annoying. "You're too nice." If I had a dollar for every time someone has said those words to me, I would have
enough to pay my way through college and possibly still have enough to buy a house afterwards. However, what some fail to understand is that
kindness can change lives; and as dramatic as that sounds, it's true. During my sophomore year of marching band, we gained a new member in my
section – anna; though she was not as fast at learning as everyone else and definitely not as mature. More times than not, she could be pretty annoying
and unfortunately, she was often the center of jokes. However, she was always walking around with her rose–colored glasses, keeping a cheery
disposition. She always sat by herself reading a book

John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men Essay
John Steinbeck's "Of mice and men" Of Mice and Men is set along the Salinas River a few miles south of Soledad in the fallen world of the Salinas
Valley, which Steinbeck places "east of Eden" the Promised Land is only a painful and illusory dream. This land is populated by "sons of Cain",
men doomed to walk alone. One of the major themes that comes from this is loneliness, or fear of apartness. One of the themes of Of Mice and Men
is that men fear loneliness, that they need someone to be with and to talk to who will offer understanding and companionship. Soledad is a Spanish
word and translates into English as solitude or loneliness. This country is one of such loneliness that George and Lennie stand out sharply because they

It is impossible to live where they are so the safe place becomes a little home. Steinbeck is not only able to dramatize Lennie's desire for the "safe
place" through his love for the rabbits, but he is also able to define on a low level of consciousness that desire the most important aspect of their
plans for Lennie is the attraction to soft, warm fur. This transfer from the farm to the rabbits is also important because it makes possible the theme
of action. The dead mouse which Lennie carries in his pocket in the first chapter introduces this. As George talks about Lennie's attraction to mice, it
becomes clear that the rabbits will come to the same end crushed by Lennie's simple, uncontrollable strength. The readers see a pattern after they
read about how Lennie killed the mouse and the puppy. Also, George's story that he tells twice about the girl with the red dress and the crushing of
Curley's hand, the shooting of Candy's dog, and the frequent appearances of Curley's wife contribute to this expectancy of patterns. All of these
incidents are patterns of the theme of action and predict the fate of the rabbits and thus the fate of the dream of the "safe place." Lennie asks George,
"Tell me like you done before," He repeated his words rhythmically, as though he had said them many times before. It is shown that even Lennie has
heard it by his repeating the exact language. "An'

A statement that stuck out to me was that "people are more important than things." This is an idea that seems to have been innate for me. Since I
was young, I always cared a lot about the people in my life, and that has translated to how I am now. I value friendships so much. I believe that yes,
you have your family and they should always be there and support you, but having friends creates such more stable foundation in the relationships
that you have. You can make a lot of money and buy whatever you want, but money does not equate happiness. I appreciate the people who are in
my life and all the experiences we have shared together, which I will continue to reminisce about and keep forever. Money or things could not give
me all those experiences. Sometimes I feel like people are so driven by their need for a sense of achievement and wealth/power that they push people
away and give up any chance of building their friendships and enjoying the fruits of life that you can only get through your interaction with people.
These people just end up alone, and that is something I do not want to do. Randy Pausch was very successful at being able to always put people before
things. "Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you want" and "brick walls are there to show how much people want something," we
two of my most favorite quotes that came out of his speech. The more I reflected on these

Introduction
In Randy Pausch 's "Last Lecture," Randy discusses how he achieved all of his childhood dreams throughout his life and how he helped others achieve
their dreams. Often times, childhood dreams are forgotten due to life stressors, other opportunities and interests that come along and, ultimately,
believing that those childhood dreams are unachievable. However, this was not the case for Randy Pausch. Randy created a list of things that he
desired to experience throughout his lifetime, and through persistency, acceptance and some modification, he was able to complete his list. Similar
to many children 's "being an astronaut" dream, Randy had a couple dreams that seemed impossible. These seemingly impossible dreams on Randy
's list included: "being in zero gravity," "playing in the NFL," and "being Captain Kirk." While Randy never received the opportunity to play football
for the NFL, his understanding and lessons learned from his football experiences made up for this shortcoming. Nonetheless, Randy was able to
conquer all of his other dreams. With each dream Randy discusses, he explains each "brick wall" he hit along his way and what he did to get around
these walls.
Randy Pausch 's Success A large factor that influenced Randy 's success, was the life he was exposed to growing up. Randy explains how wonderful

Literary Foils In John Steinbeck's Of Mice And Men
In the story "Of Mice and Men" by John Steinbeck is a wondrous tale of two men George a small, slender man, and Lennie a big, tall man with a
mental disability, who travel together and face difficulties, happy times and fun with friends. This story by John Steinbeck has wowed many people
around the world and right here. after you read this story you'll for sure want all your friends and families to know too.
John steinbeck uses these literary devices to create the story, and develop the theme of friendship throughout the story
in "Of Mice and Men" by john steinbeck, literary foils are used to show the difference and similarities between George and Lennie.
Literary foils are important they show the best and worst differences in people. But in this story it gets a little hectic on how different George and
lennie are. And mostly about how forgetful lennie is. "So you forgot that awready..(george said)....I forgot" lennie said softly. "i tried not to
forget." (steinbeck 4) This supports the literary foils because of how different George and Lennie are and it also explains how different they
are.this is important because it shows the struggles each of them go through but them being able to have each other helps them get through those
situations. Also lennie gets attached to things so he loves his new pup that george got him, but alittle to much. "George put down his cards very
deliberately. "Lennie," he said sharply" (steinbeck 42) This shows that even though george is a nice guy he can be defensive. when he was just
outside of the bunkhouse and saw lennie bring a puppy in he would've beaten lennie up for it so +the pup wouldn't die. This also relates to
Lennie's death and how George had to kill him before he actually got hurt, "you hadda, George. i swear you hadda." (steinbeck 107) In the end this
shows that if george would have died lennie would have killed multiple people to get revenge vs. george just killing the killer and slightly lying to
save himself. All these make up a good part of the book but most importantly irony takes a long stride to be the best and how it is used to form the
story of the book.

Of Mice and Men the Relationship Between George and Lennie...
How does Steinbeck present the relationship between George and Lennie in this chapter? The author John Steinbeck presents the relationship
between the two characters, George and Lennie in different ways as they are both different characters and have different personalities. He presents it
like a parent and child relationship, with George being the parent and Lennie the child. As soon as the reader is introduced to George and Lennie
Steinbeck tells us that, "They had walked in single file down the path". This immediately notifies the reader of the kind of relationship between
George and Lennie, it does this by stating "single file". This reminds us of a game called follow the leader. It also tells us that the person at the... Show

I could also notice when I was reading through the first chapter that George has a sense of authority over Lennie, "you gonna get that wood". This
is like a parent telling a child to do his chores. On some occasions though George shows a bit of hatred towards Lennie, he thinks of what he could
have if Lennie wasn't around and contrasts that with George. There is also a sense of lack of trust in the relationship between the two men. We see
this through the predicament with the work cards. It tells us that George again has to take care of Lennie, and that Lennie isn't trusted by George.
Again this idea is portrayed to the reader on page seventeen, we notice that George knows that he needs a plan b as Lennie cannot be trusted so his
plan b is to tell Lennie to "hide in the brush until I come for you". This helps us to understand the relationship even further. George also treats Lennie
like a dog in one occasion in the chapter, "good boy". This is something a master would say to a dog to encourage them, it also tells us the sort of role
in the relationship George has again.
In conclusion, we see that Steinbeck uses various techniques to portray the relationship between George and Lennie. But the main method is the idea
of George being like a parent to

Examples Of Direct Characterization In Of Mice And Men
One of the most astounding books Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, took place in one of the darkest time period in American History, the Great
Depression. The setting of the book took place in a small country town in Soledad California, near the Salinas River. This book introduces the two
main characters, George Milton, and Lennie Small with real life struggles of being migrant farm workers for a ranch. The story opens up with one of
the many conflicts that George and Lennie will face throughout the whole story; George and Lennie running away from Weed after feeling a girls red
dress. Although Lennie commits certain acts of violence in Of Mice and Men John Steinbeck portrays Lennie Small as having the traits common to the
innocent archetype.
John Steinbeck portrays Lennie's characterizations through indirect and direct characterizations. Indirect characterization is when the author will
describe a person about how they are through context clues but not directly saying it. For example, "No whatta want? "Let's have different color rabbits
George." (Steinbeck 16). That is indirect characterization for Lennie being childish because John Steinbeck does not come straight out and say that
Lennie is childish, but readers can tell by the context that he is childish. Direct characterization is when the author comes right out to the readers and
says the characters traits. For instance, "Behind him walked his opposite, a huge man..." (Steinbeck 2). This being direct characterization

A Research On Time Management
In my research of time management, I have come upon several sources that seem to be very comprehensive in the methodology the authors choose to
help achieve better time management. The methods they suggest do disagree on the usefulness of technology, and whether or not it does more harm
than good, but the sources all agree that the discipline to follow the schedule you have created is key. The research agrees that people who schedule
and manage their time are in general happier and more satisfied with what they accomplish.
Additionally, the experts agree the first step is to prioritize the tasks you wish to accomplish. Martha Beck, a writer for Oprah magazine, banks heavily
on the ideologies of Professor Randy Pausch, a computer scientist at Carnegie Mellon University. Pausch made a speech in 1998 titled the Last Lecture
where he spoke about achieving dreams after he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. The other sources do not directly state how we should prioritize,
but Pausch set up a very clear methodical way. Beck believes in Pausch's quadrant system where one creates four categories: urgent important,
important not urgent, unimportant urgent, and unimportant not urgent. After one has settled on what should go in these categories, one throws out the
unimportant not urgent pile and forgets about it. One then schedules time with the urgent important pile first, then important not urgent, then urgent
unimportant.

Literary Criticism Of Rip Van Winkle
"Rip was ready to attend to anybody's business but his own: but as to doing family duty, and keeping his farm in order, he found it impossible,"
(Irving 10). Washington Irving is a romantic American writer in the 1800s with works including Rip Van Winkle as a part of the collection of
essays and short stories called The Sketchbook. Rip Van Winkle is set in a village near the Kaatskill Mountains during the American Revolution and
tells the story of a man who is loved by many in the town but spends his days in idleness. His wife often nags him because Van Winkle does not work
for anything in his family. One day, to escape his wife's nagging, Van Winkle walks off into the mountains with his dog, Wolfe. He stumbles upon a

Although he could be doing so many different things, he chooses to spend his days gossiping and talking about nothing. He wastes his life away
instead of doing things valuable to him. Furthermore, Van Winkle lives his life with the smallest amount of trouble possible. "Rip Van Winkle,
however, was one of those happy mortals, of foolish, well–oiled dispositions, who take the world easy, eat white bread or brown, whichever can be got
with least thought or trouble, and would rather starve on a penny than work for a pound" (Irving 10). Van Winkle does not work for what he wants
and lives his life with the bare minimum because he's lazy. Irving presents Van Winkle as lazy. Besides being lazy, Van Winkle is also
characterized as irresponsible. Irresponsibility is Van Winkle's attitude towards life and his family. His neglectfulness towards his own family and
children is the exact opposite from Van Winkle's helpfulness to the villagers. For instance, Van Winkle was well liked by the children in the village
because he plays with them and care for them. However, when it comes to his own children, he neglects them causing them to be "as ragged and
wild as if they belonged to nobody" (Irving 10). Van Winkle does little things for the children in town but leaves his own kids by themselves. He
never cares for them and lets them go wild while he plays with the children in the town. In

Of Mice And Men By John Steinbeck
Of Mice and Men, it is not just a band! Of Mice and Men was originally a short novel written by John Steinbeck in the 1930s. Regardless of the
shortness in length, though, it is a rather deep and emotional book with quite a few messages behind the fictional storyline. These messages, however,
cannot be discovered right off the bat. To genuinely absorb the messages Steinbeck teaches and actually understand the meaning behind them, one must
read the book in its entirety. Steinbeck educates readers about these ideas through various ideas and literary devices, which includes the development of
the characters, symbolism within them, and a bit of imagery to completely formulate the plot. The characters are, naturally, the biggest part of the...

was wearing the red dress do not know him or his 'disability'. George had explained that the girl was scared because she thought Lennie was trying
to attack her, and after George finally made Lennie let go of the dress, they were driven to run and hide so neither of them would get caught and
sent to jail. Children tend to be very tactile at a young age, they love to reach out and grab a hold of items that peak their interest, considering they
truly do not know any better. George even says that as well, "He's jes' like a kid. There ain't no more harm in him than a kid neither, except he's so
strong" (Steinbeck 43). Lennie does not realize that he is so strong either, so as he goes about his life he ends up scaring people, or hurting them,
and hurting animals as well, without realizing why. He does eventually learn that what he does is wrong, but he still does not know what happens,
really. For example, just like Steinbeck explains at the beginning of the book how he accidentally kills mice because he wants to pet them and does not
recognize his strength. He accidentally did it to a puppy as well, "Why do you got to get killed? You ain't so little as mice . . . I di'n't know you'd get

My Personal Identity : The Story Of An Identity Crisis
Going into this project I was in a little bit of an Identity crisis myself. I was trying to find out where I fit with my parent's hardships back in Ethiopia
and as a first–generation student in America. I was trying to figure out how this all ties together within the American society I live in. With the
prompt "some students have a background or identity that is so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it." I
believed it was time for me to bring these questions out onto paper. At the time I was in 10th grade in a summer course I honestly didn't want to be
in. However, because of that I definitely was not the only Rhetor for this paper. In fact, for most of my paper, I spoke via the eyes of those other
rhetors, My father was one of the first and most important rhetor in my piece. Just hearing his story of being down on his luck all his life and finally
getting the chance to come to a place where he may have an opportunity, not for himself, but for his children was gut–wrenching. It was the central
piece of my paper both personally and narratively. The next biggest rhetor in my paper was mymother. She always had her head peeking from the
corner the entire process. She continuously urged me to tell more about her and my father in my essay to a point where my teacher began to worry
that if I add any more about my parents I'll hit the word limit without talking at all about myself. The final significant Rhetor in my essay was a long

Women have no place in the author's idealized vision of a world structured around the brotherly bonds of men, because they only cause troubles.
Material В– the novel takes place in California in the 1930s. Steinbeck describes life of wage labourers without permanent home, who work on
ranches. There are also mentioned problems of the American apartheid society. The novel is told from the point of view of a third–person objective
narrator. Diction and language style are conformed to the setting of the novel. Steinbeck uses Standard English for the authorial speech, for the direct
speech he uses colloquial English, very often with slang and argot spoken among people working on ranches. Using argot and vulgarisms helps to

Importance Of Friendship In The Great Gatsby
Merriam–Webster defines a friend as "One attached to another by affection or esteem". Our success and lives as a whole are altogether based on
relationships we create and what we do with them. Communication and the ability to work with others is a basic and required skill in every field of
our lives, whether it's applying for a job, meeting with a teacher, talking to a parent or simply spending time with family and friends. It is something
taught to preschoolers on their first day and used until their final few. To survive, we must meet "basic needs" known as food, water, shelter and,
clothing. Friendship should be acknowledged in this list as a need of each person. By displaying the relationship of Lennie Small and George Milton
in Of Mice and Men, John Steinbeck portrays this need for friendship. F. Scott Fitzgerald portrays this idea as well through, Jay Gatsby and Nick
Carraway in The Great Gatsby. Friendship is a basic need of any human, needed to survive and thrive in our everyday lives.
In The Great Gatsby, Nick and Gatsby needed one another to be successful in each aspect of their lives, their friendship is one unique to both the
story and themselves. From the start, Nick was always intrigued by Gatsby and sought out to find more about him, the truth about him. He knew
Gatsby was special, unlike anyone he had met before. It was only in his best interest to hold onto such a striking friend with a tenacious grip, "It was

Character Analysis Of Mice And Men
John Steinbeck sets the scene of his novella, Of Mice and Men, in the Salinas River Valley, a few miles south of Soledad. The time period of the
novella is the 1930's during the Great Depression. The Great Depression began in 1929 after the U.S. had a major financial crisis. People lost all of
their money and their homes when the stock market crashed. Many men became migrant farm workers who would travel from farm to farm, working
for just enough money for food and a few belongings. John Steinbeck grew up in the Salinas River Valley during the Depression. In hisnovella, of Mice
and Men, Steinbeck uses the characters Candy, Curley's wife, and Crooks to prove people will do anything to stop being lonely.

Candy shows people will do anything to not be lonely.
Furthermore, Steinbeck uses Curley's wife to show how people will do anything to not be lonely. Even though Curley's wife is married, she flirts
with the other men on the farm. Curley is a boxer and wears expensive clothes. His father is the boss on the farm and has a lot of money. Curley's
wife tries to talk to the boys but they don't trust her. She says, "Why can't I talk to you? I never get to talk to nobody. I get awful lonely"
(Steinbeck 86). This quote shows that no one ever tries or wants to talk to her. Curley's wife complains to Lennie about how lonely she is and that
she just wants to talk to people. As the book continues, she explains to Lennie why she never gets to talk to anyone. She says, "You can talk to
people, but I can't talk to nobody but Curley. Else he gets mad" (Steinbeck 87). This quote shows that Curley is very controlling over his wife and only
lets her talk to him. Curley's wife talks to Lennie even though he is very intimidating. She is desperate to talk to anyone so she flirts with Lennie and
the other men to get their attention.
Lastly, Steinbeck uses Crooks to show the things people are willing to do to not be lonely. Crooks is the black crippled stable buck who works on the
farm. He is the only black man for miles and has no one to talk with, or to be his friend. Crooks tells Lennie, "A guy needs somebody – to be near him

Reasons Why George Was Justified In Of Mice And Men
Is killing someone right or wrong? In the novella Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck readers are conflicted with this question all around the world.
George killed Lennie after Lennie accidentally killed Curley's wife.George and Lennie had known eachother for a long time they even traveled
together. George helped Lennie out of multiple situations and killing him was the best way he could think of in the instance of Lennie killing
Curley's wife.Even though Lennie and George were friends, George was justified in killing Lennie because Lennie was undisciplined and unsafe.
First and foremost, George has to constantly continue to repeat rules to Lennie because Lennie is undisciplined. Like, after Slim gives Lennie a
puppy Lennie brings the puppy into the bunkhouse with him even though George told him he was not supposed to. For example, after Lennie comes
into the bunkhouse John Steinbeck writes that George " reached down and picked up the tiny puppy from where Lennie had been concealing it
against his stomach." (Steinbeck) In this quote it shows that Lennie disobeyed the rules that George has set with him so he could get the puppy this
means that Lennie is undisciplined because he broke the rules even though he knew that there were specific rules that were not supposed to be broken.
consequently, George has to repeat himself many times and treat Lennie like a child by fixing the things that Lennie messes up and disobeyes the
rules. So George was justified in his decision to kill

What Is The Dream In The American Dream
The Dream in Of Mice and Men Of Mice and Men is a novel written by John Steinbeck. The book tells a story of how two opposite individuals,
George and Lennie cope with their problems as they travel around California in search of ranch work. Throughout the story Steinbeck displays
realism. This category of literature is where the author does not sugar coat life. Steinbeck does not "romanticize the natural world or human nature"
(Curry). In doing so in this type of reality many people have a "dream". To give an example, Lennie and George had a dream of owning a shack on a
piece of land. Each time these two individuals thought of the "dream" it creates comfort and security for them because it gave them hope. In Of Mice
and Men the "dream"... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the novel Steinbeck displays the harsh reality of life. He displays/writes life as it was during the depression, the time in which the novel took
place in. An example of a character's dream not being achieved is Curley's wife. As said before her dream was to become a movie star. However,
her dream was not achieved because supposedly her mother destroyed the letter sent to her by a movie producer. "... he was gonna write to me
about it... I never got the letter... I always thought my ol' lady stole it," (Steinbeck 88). Nevertheless, us as readers can assume she was "catfished"
or lied to. Curley's wife never got or received the letter because she was not meant to be an actor. In doing so, Curley's wife's dream was never
achieved even though she believed she could achieve it. Before Curley's wife was happy when she believed in her dream but after her dream "died"
her life was meaningfulness. That is why she decided to marry Curly because that was her only way to survive during the depression. This is an
example of the natural world of human nature. Another example of where The Dream is not achieved is Lennie and George's. As mentioned before
Lennie and George have the American Dream to own a piece of land. They try or attempt to save money by working on ranches. No matter how hard
these two worked they could not achieve the dream because they would run into problems. Including Lennie causing trouble or not having enough

The Story Of An Hour Essay
In "The Story of an Hour," I can relate to so many different things that go on in this short tragic story. After reading the story I almost felt like Louise
Mallard and I were living the same life with different events and a different outcome. Everything about the two of us comes down to being always
misunderstood and just wanting to be free.
In the beginning of the story, we look at Louise Mallard from a bird's eye point of view. Louise is introduced as a devoted young wife who has been
told the news of her husband's unfortunate death. When Chopin goes deeper into Louise's thoughts and feelings, they surprisingly contradict her initial
description of her. I grew up in New Jersey my whole life. I lived in a huge house and everyone in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
That's why I understand Louise so much. We were not what people expected us to be. We were just living our life how we had to.
Louise Mallard is seen by the reader as dependent and helpless because of how she is treated by others, even her own sister. When the news comes
about her husband being killed, she tells her like one would tell a child that their dog just died. You can just sense how Louise has dealt with being
hovered over her whole life by her sister. A good example of this is when her sister is pleading with her to come out of the room that she has locked
herself into saying, " Louise, open the door! I beg; open the door В– you will make yourself ill (16, paragraph 17.)" Being able to read Louise's
thoughts, you discover that she is not weak in her mind and spirit, she is just highly confined.
In my life, being hovered over is an everyday, every hour, and every minute kind of thing for me. Since I was a baby, my parents have been highly
overprotective. Like Louise, I am looked at by my parents as dependent and helpless. I am very much independent, but I am some what confined.
Though I live by myself in a whole different state than my parents; it sometimes feels like they live right next door. The fact that my parents pay all
of my bills, and on top of that pay me an allowance of someone with a full time job every Friday, seems to give them a right to barge in on my life.
Having no complaints about any of this, I

The Theme of Loneliness in Of Mice and Men
In the novel, Of Mice and Men John Steinbeck used George and Lennie's relationship and the theme of hope to point out the loneliness in the novel.
The novel starts off and is set in Soledad which means lonely. At the beginning they get a job working on a farm together.Lennie is a little retarded and
has great physical strength that isn't too controllable. As they work from ranch to ranch, Lennie relies on George for guidance and help. Rather than

who tries to help them financially. Before their dream can be fulfilled, Lennie kills the wife ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They didn't have any family members around to give them support. As farmers that gave them the chance to make a friendship: "Guys Like us, that
work on ranches, are the loneliest guys in the world, they got no family" (Steinbeck 15). After they start talking then it's clear that they both don't want
to be alone their whole life. Steinbeck points out that most of the people that work on the ranch don't have anything to look ahead to. George and
Lennie want to have something to look forward to and that is why they hope that it won't happen to them: "With us it ain't like that, We got a future"
(Steinbeck 15). This is where the hope of them accomplishing their dreams comes into play. Later Lennie goes on to tell that it won't happen to them
because they have each other to look over each other. That is where it is showing their friendship covering up the true loneliness of the characters.
The novel suggests doubts of someone getting their dream many times. This is where the character Crooks joins in. He states that he has seen a
hundred of men in his time and that everyone has a hunger of a piece of land in their head and none of them ever get it. He uses the metaphor to
going to heaven that not everyone gets to go and that not everyone gets some land: "I seen guys nearly crazy with loneliness for land" (Steinbeck 89).
Here it suggest that George and Lennie might not get a place, but they refuse to believe it. The last thing that they want is to be

turmoil one of the first signs of heroism we see is when Sergeant "Hoot" Gibson, under heavy enemy fire, risks his own life while attempting to
clear a path to a safe spot for the wounded soldiers in his group. The turning point in the morality of what the soldiers are fighting is shown by two
soldiers, Sergeant Sizemore and Private Thomas. Sergeant Sizemore's request to go into battle is refused due to a cast he bears on his

George And Lennie Relationship Analysis
In the novella Of Mice And Men by John Steinbeck, the relationship between Lennie Small and George Milton is complex. Lennie and George are
two companions who look for work and brave the hardships of the Dust Bowl and the Great Depression together. Although Lennie and George are
both grown men, their relationship resembles more of a child and a single parent, or a boy and his dog. Lennie is portrayed as animalistic and childish
through his behavior and Steinbeck's comparisons. This reveals the crucial power dynamic in George and Lennie's relationship. In the beginning of the
novella, Lennie is portrayed as innocent and dependent on George. When Lennie had a mouse and George asked for it, Steinbeck describes Lennie's
reaction ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Burns continues by saying that unpropitious events occur, even in the lives of the everyday man. Burns implies that the mouse should consider
himself lucky because it cannot think about the past; it only focuses on the present and the future, while men dwell on the past. Lennie and the
mouse have similar characteristics; just like the mouse, Lennie cannot remember the past. In the novella, George gets frustrated with Lennie for
always forgetting things. When Lennie could not remember why they had left Weed and why they were going somewhere new, George says
"...[s]o you forgot already"(4). In Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men, Lennie is a metaphor for the mouse, and George a metaphor for men. George can
look back on the past, which is why he carries the responsibility of Lennie. Lennie is again given animalistic character traits. Steinbeck does this to
create a dynamic in Lennie and George's relationship, that of a man and animal. In which George is the responsible one who looks out for Lennie.
The parallels between Lennie and George's relationship and the relationship that their workmate, Candy had with his dog reaffirm the power dynamic
between George and Lennie. In the novella, Candy must kill his dog because it is old and weak. Candy felt such extreme regret when it came time to
kill his dog, that instead of doing

Daniel Charters
With the good standing amongst the gentility of the Lachlan district the result of which harnessed Ben's widening reputation of reliability viewed
through comments such as;[sic] "...he was a good mate at mustering cattle or running wild horses." Ben developed a friendship with one, in
particular, Daniel Charters another local grazier whose family had extensive property between Carcoar and Forbes. Daniel Charters was 6 ft. tall, of
stout build, a fresh complexion, light brown hair, blue eyes and could read and write, a very useful attribute for helping his friend Ben Hall, who
could do neither. The two men went on to establish a close friendship. Furthermore, both men had similar attributes, amiable, excellent horsemen and
Bushmen. Charters stated;[sic] "...I have known Ben Hall for six or seven years; I used to be at his place when I was gathering cattle for myself and
for my sister."... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Lennie and George in John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men Essay
John Steinbeck wrote the play Of Mice and Men in 1937 (Steinbeck). It is a play about two ranch workers who do not have the best of luck. The
two workers were named George and Lennie. George was a more small bodied man. His partner Lennie was a giant among average sized people.
They are on the road going place to place working numerous jobs. Lennie has a learning disability. The two work hand and hand. George is there to
keep Lennie out of trouble. Lennie in a way helps keep George together. Sometimes it gets difficult for the two but they always get through everything
together. They both work hand and hand. George is the brains and Lennie is the muscle. Lennie is a very powerful man so he can do a lot of things
normal men cannot do.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many think that this decision was more to please his parents instead of just him wanting to go there. By Steinbeck wanting to become a writer he
thought that there was little use for college. After college he tried being a freelance writer. He moved to New York City where he worked as a
construction worker and a newspaper reporter ("World"). Lennie is a very misunderstood individual. He has some sort of mental issue that makes
his life different than normal. Lennie has a thing for soft fluffy things, he likes to hold them and pet them. Most of the time these soft things end
up dead which Lennie tries his hardest to keep from George when this happens. George once found a dead mouse in Lennie's pocket that he had
been keeping there for 3 whole days after it died (Lisca). Lennie is a giant of a man. He does not understand how much power he has. This causes a
lot of the mistakes he makes. George is there most of the time to correct or stop Lennie from doing these things. There are sometimes when George
is not there to stop him and Lennie gets them both into trouble. The two have had to move several times because of Lennie (McMurray). In fact
every time they have had to leave a place was because of Lennie's actions. There was one thing Lennie got them in and they could not run from it.
Lennie was in the barn and Curley's wife came in. He wanted to touch her hair and he ended up rubbing it too hard. She yelled for help and he wanted
her to shut up so he

Harshness Of Life In John Steinbeck's Of Mice And Men
On February 27, 1902, in Salinas County, California, an American Novelist named John Steinbeck was born. He had an early appreciation for the
land, in particular, California's Salinas Valley, which would be a big impact on his writing later on. Steinbeck's life is very similar to the book he
would write, Of Mice and Men, which takes place in his hometown Salinas, and also has the same theme of Steinbeck's life. Steinbeck experienced
harshness in his life, drifting out of schools for six years until he dropped out for good. There are many themes found in the novel Of Mice and Men by
John Steinbeck, but the most significant theme is the harshness of life, which frequently appears and develops throughout the novel.
The harshness of life theme is shown right at the start of the book with two examples. The first example appears on page five when Lennie tries to
cover up killing a mouse to George. George sees that Lennie is holding something and when he asks what it is, Lennie says "Jus a dead mouse,
George. I didn't kill it. Honest! I found it. I found it dead" (5). This proves the harshness of life because Lennie could not control what he wanted.
And in life, in order to succeed and live a good life, you are going to have to be able to control what you want. Another example of the harshness of
life occurs when Lennie was talking about him petting the mice and how it's not under his control to stop it. He says "I'd pet 'em, and pretty soon
they bit my fingers and I pinched their heads a little and then they was dead" (10). This is a great example of the harshness of life because it shows
killing. Lennie kills the fluffy animal, but he did not want to. Steinbeck shows with these two examples that harshness of life doesn't have to include
only human beings, it also can be animals.
The reason why George and Lennie travel together is in fact because of the harshness of life. When George is talking to Slim about Lennie and
how they are together now, he says,"I turns to Lennie and says, 'Jump in.' An' he jumps. Couldn't swim a stroke. He damn near drowned before we
could get him"(40). George was being a jerk to Lennie and ended up having to save his life. This is a big harshness of life because George was a jerk to

Themes of Unity and Hardship in Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath

  • 1. Themes of Unity in the Grapes John Steinbeck’s novel, The Grapes of Wrath, is a moving account of the social plight of Dustbowl farmers and is widely considered an American classic. The novel takes place during the depression of the 1930s in Oklahoma and all points west to California. Steinbeck uses the Joad family as a specific example of the general plight of the poor farmers. The Joads are forced off of their farm in Oklahoma by the banks and drought, and they, like many other families of the time, head out for the promised land of California. They endure much hardship along the way, and they finally make it to California only to find that work is scarce and human labor and life are cheap. Tom Joad, the eldest son in the family, starts the book freshly... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Peter Lisca, an extensive critic of Steinbeck’s work, explains “…in is last meeting with his mother, in which he asserts his spiritual unity with all men, it is evident that he has moved from material and personal resentment to ethical indignation, from particulars to principles” (Lisca 98). Tom clearly changes his feelings and life goals from selfish to self–less. The power of unity is emphasized through the main events of the novel when the Joads leave the government camp and in the strike at the peach fields. The best part of their arduous and depressing stay in California, is when the Joads get a space in the government camp at Weedpatch. The government camp governs and polices itself, has clean camp spaces and large bathrooms with modern conveniences. Here the migrants are free from the malicious deputies, who continually beat up the migrants and burn down their paper shacks at the edges of different towns. “When the migrants band together to run the camp at Weedpatch, a camp that is clean, decent, orderly and without deputy sheriffs from outside, the people are beginning to move toward a social ideal” (Bowden 199). When the Joads are forced to leave the camp for lack of work and food, they realize the power of the camp as a group of people as compared to the dangers outside of the camp that they continually face. • 2. Allegories in 'of Mice and Men' In the novel, 'Of mice and Men', John Steinbeck uses allegory to represent different themes and messages. An allegory is a story, poem or a picture which can be interpreted to reveal a hidden meaning. While reading Steinbeck's book I noticed different metaphors such as the usage of animals and Curley's wife. Throughout the whole book the reader can notice many animals mentioned such as rabbits, mice, the puppy and the old dog. Curley's wife is also a sort of symbol. She represents the way in which the women were treated and looked upon in those days. The animals and Curley's wife all symbolize different things in life in the 1930's USA. They all symbolize the hopes and the dreams that the characters share which motivates and drives them... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Saying that the rabbits should be furry, fluffy and colorful makes their life even more padded and warm, which protects them from the tough world at that time. The animals are a great way to show and symbolize different things. To find the allegorical meaning you only have to look in between the lines to find a different meaning to the words and sayings. This can be seen in the case of Curley's wife. By looking more closely at the story, one can see that Curley's wife is also a metaphor which symbolizes the way which other people looked upon women in the society of the 1930's. Curley's wife represents a whole marginalized group in the American society at that time. In the novel, characters are never fully developed, but instead appear as outlines or symbols of real people. Candy, Crooks, and Curley's wife represent the discriminated groups of age, race, and sex. Curley's wife has been given an overall picture in the eyes of George and Lennie before they even meet her, by Candy. The picture Candy paints about her hints at how she tends to give all the men on the ranch 'the eye'. Nobody really knows Curley's wife because nobody ever talks to her and listens to what she really has to say. Curley's wife wants attention. She wants people to notice her. She is the only woman on the ranch out of all the men. She wears fancy clothes and nice make up to make her look beautiful and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Of Mice And Men Character Development Character Development, Symbolism, Author's Message, Oh My! Of Mice and Men, it is not just a band! Of Mice and Men was originally a short novel written by John Steinbeck in the 1930s. Regardless of the shortness in length, though, it is a rather emotional book with quite a few messages behind the fictional storyline. These messages, however, cannot be discovered right off the bat. To genuinely absorb the messages the author teaches and genuinely understand the meaning behind them, one must read the book in its entirety. Steinbeck educates readers about his ideas and messages through various ideas and literary devices, which includes the development of the characters, symbolism within them, and a bit of imagery to completely formulate the... Lennie did not know what he was doing wrong, and strangers like the girl who was wearing the red dress do not know him or his 'disability'. George had explained that the girl was scared because she thought Lennie was trying to attack her, and after George finally made Lennie release his grip on the dress, they were driven to run and hide so neither of them would get caught and sent to jail. Children tend to be particularly tactile at a young age, they love to reach out and grab a hold of items that peak their interest, considering they truly do not know any better. George even says that as well, "He's jes' like a kid. There ain't no more harm in him than a kid neither, except he's so strong" (Steinbeck 43). Lennie does not realize that he is so strong either, so as he goes about his life he ends up scaring people, or hurting them, and hurting animals as well, without realizing why. Eventually, Lennie does learn that what he does is wrong, but he still does not know what exactly happens to cause his wrongdoing. For example, just like Steinbeck explains at the beginning of the book how he accidentally kills mice as a result of wanting to pet them, as he does not recognize his own strength. • 6. A Character and Moral Study of George Milton: Of Mice and... In a scientific study, it was found that people are the best version of themselves when they are around other people. However, during the Great Depression, the idea of human companionship was drowned out by the lonely road that many men walked in search of jobs. This period showed the true impacts of the loneliness of man and also asked very important questions: are we responsible for the welfare of others? Or is it better to just be alone? In John Steinheck's novel Of Mice and Men, one of the protagonists, George Milton, struggles with this very concept. Stuck with his disabled best friend, Lennie Small, he feels a sense of responsibility towards Lennie, but also acknowledges how much easier his life would be without Lennie. Although... However, George also uses his cleverness at the end of the novel after killing Lennie with Carlson's gun. He says that Lennie had Carlson's gun and Lennie had get it away from him before killing him, which is also a lie. Although Lennie's clever nature often is used in a compassionate way, it must be noted that he also uses his street smarts for more nefarious and selfish purposes. Outside of George being a man with a lot of common sense and intelligence, he also is very compassionate. Perhaps not as much as Slim, but almost everything George does is impassioned and driven by his deep care for Lennie. There is a lot of debate as to whether George killing Lennie was a selfish act. However, George's body language in the last moment of Lennie's life expresses true caring and even love. John Steinbeck's describes George as stiff and monotonous. He describes George's actions with Carlson's gun by saying "The hand shook violently, but his face set and his hand steadied" (Steinbeck 106). George was terrified and sorry to kill his best friend, but realized it had to be done. Whether or not it was a selfless act is another story, but there is no question that some of George's motivation came from a compassionate place. Another place George displays compassion is how terribly he wants to buy the dream farm, not only for him, but ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Friendship And Loneliness In John Steinbeck's Of Mice And Men The characters make dreams that cannot be achieved in John Steinbeck's, Of Mice and Men, where friendship and loneliness are shown by certain characters in this novella. Friendship is one of the key character traits in the novella. For instance, friendship would be Lennie and George, their friendship is what holds them together and although Lennie is not smart, George still accompanies him as a friend. Continuously as George play more tricks on Lennie he began to see how Lennie didn't care for the tricks, he knew he had a friend. Another example would be Candy and his pet. Therefore, Candy is lonely because his best friend is gone and he has no other friends as good as his dog. Pg.43 "She knelt in the hay beside him. "Listen," she said. • 11. Of Mice and Men-Curleys Wife Analysis Of Mice and Men is a novel set on a ranch in the Salinas Valley in California, during the Great Depression of the 1930s by John Steinbeck. It was the first work to bring Steinbeck's national recognition as a writer. The book addresses the real hopes and dreams of working–class America. Steinbeck's short novel raises the lives of the poor and dispossessed to a higher, symbolic level. The title suggests that plans of Mice and Men often go awry, a reference to Robert Burn's poem "To a Mouse." Since the novel has been published, it has been called "Vulgar" and "Offensive"; perhaps because of the way it mentally handicapped people, people of different races (black people) and the way in which women were portrayed. *Of Mice and Men is... She also continues to comment on her past by saying, 'this guy says I was a natural'. This depicts how Curley's wife may be influenced by the American dream so she may still have hope and dreams to carry out her task which failed in the past. The American dream plays a vital theme constantly throughout the book for other characters on the ranch too. George and Lennie have their dream of 'livin of the fatha tha lan', which fails in the end as George tragically kills Lennie. They are perpetually stirred with ideas to satisfy their dream and too eager to accomplish what they started which resulted in them accidentally involving Crooks and Candy in their fairytale. . The Lady With The Pet Dog Analysis "Then they spent a long time taking counsel together, they talked of how to avoid the necessity for secrecy, for deception, for living in different cities, and not seeing one another for long stretches of time. How could they free themselves from these intolerable fetters?" (Chekhov 224). In 1899, Anton Chekhov wrote "The Lady with the Pet Dog" which tells the story of Dmitry Dmitrich Gurov and Anna Sergeyevna von Didertiz's love affair through the man's point of view. It is hopeless and immoral, but it is a love that knows no bounds. On the other hand, Oates' retelling takes place in Nantucket, Massachusetts; Albany, New York, and Ohio. It is clear that Nantucket is supposed to be the United States' own version of Yalta; however, less emphasis is put on the beauty of it. Instead, Oates chooses to highlight its tourism and romanticism. When the couple is walking around the town, they look "at the other strollers, the weekend visitors, the tourists, the couples like themselves" (Oates 235). As a result, the magic of Yalta is lost in Nantucket, and part of the romantic aspect is gone, too. Additionally, a year it takes place is never specified, but based on the year it was written––1972––it probably is somewhere around the late 1900s. This means it happens during more modern times, and consequently, it is more difficult to feel for the lovers as they live in a time when divorce is more accessible and accepted. Of course, they have their own reasons for staying with their spouses, but compared to Chekhov's story, their romance is definitely less tragic in that regard. Because Chekhov's story is more sensible and understandable in terms of setting, this is just one area that proves his story is the better of the two. Furthermore, while there are some comparisons in characters, Chekhov and Oates have ultimately created characters unique to their stories. Everyone has their own legacy to leave in the world, and this is mine. Be kind to everyone, no matter how ignorant or annoying. "You're too nice." If I had a dollar for every time someone has said those words to me, I would have enough to pay my way through college and possibly still have enough to buy a house afterwards. This land is populated by "sons of Cain", men doomed to walk alone. One of the major themes that comes from this is loneliness, or fear of apartness. One of the themes of Of Mice and Men is that men fear loneliness, that they need someone to be with and to talk to who will offer understanding and companionship. Steinbeck is not only able to dramatize Lennie's desire for the "safe place" through his love for the rabbits, but he is also able to define on a low level of consciousness that desire the most important aspect of their plans for Lennie is the attraction to soft, warm fur. This transfer from the farm to the rabbits is also important because it makes possible the theme of action. The dead mouse which Lennie carries in his pocket in the first chapter introduces this. As George talks about Lennie's attraction to mice, it becomes clear that the rabbits will come to the same end crushed by Lennie's simple, uncontrollable strength. The readers see a pattern after they read about how Lennie killed the mouse and the puppy. Also, George's story that he tells twice about the girl with the red dress and the crushing of Curley's hand, the shooting of Candy's dog, and the frequent appearances of Curley's wife contribute to this expectancy of patterns. All of these incidents are patterns of the theme of action and predict the fate of the rabbits and thus the fate of the dream of the "safe place." Since I was young, I always cared a lot about the people in my life, and that has translated to how I am now. I value friendships so much. I believe that yes, you have your family and they should always be there and support you, but having friends creates such more stable foundation in the relationships that you have. You can make a lot of money and buy whatever you want, but money does not equate happiness. I appreciate the people who are in my life and all the experiences we have shared together, which I will continue to reminisce about and keep forever. Often times, childhood dreams are forgotten due to life stressors, other opportunities and interests that come along and, ultimately, believing that those childhood dreams are unachievable. However, this was not the case for Randy Pausch. Randy created a list of things that he desired to experience throughout his lifetime, and through persistency, acceptance and some modification, he was able to complete his list. Similar to many children 's "being an astronaut" dream, Randy had a couple dreams that seemed impossible. These seemingly impossible dreams on Randy 's list included: "being in zero gravity," "playing in the NFL," and "being Captain Kirk." While Randy never received the opportunity to play football for the NFL, his understanding and lessons learned from his football experiences made up for this shortcoming. Nonetheless, Randy was able to conquer all of his other dreams. With each dream Randy discusses, he explains each "brick wall" he hit along his way and what he did to get around these walls. Literary Foils In John Steinbeck's Of Mice And Men In the story "Of Mice and Men" by John Steinbeck is a wondrous tale of two men George a small, slender man, and Lennie a big, tall man with a mental disability, who travel together and face difficulties, happy times and fun with friends. This story by John Steinbeck has wowed many people around the world and right here. after you read this story you'll for sure want all your friends and families to know too. John steinbeck uses these literary devices to create the story, and develop the theme of friendship throughout the story in "Of Mice and Men" by john steinbeck, literary foils are used to show the difference and similarities between George and Lennie. Literary foils are important they show the best and worst differences in people. But in this story it gets a little hectic on how different George and lennie are. And mostly about how forgetful lennie is. "So you forgot that awready..(george said)....I forgot" lennie said softly. "i tried not to forget." (steinbeck 4) This supports the literary foils because of how different George and Lennie are and it also explains how different they are.this is important because it shows the struggles each of them go through but them being able to have each other helps them get through those situations. Also lennie gets attached to things so he loves his new pup that george got him, but alittle to much. "George put down his cards very deliberately. "Lennie," he said sharply" (steinbeck 42) This shows that even though george is a nice guy he can be defensive. when he was just outside of the bunkhouse and saw lennie bring a puppy in he would've beaten lennie up for it so +the pup wouldn't die. This also relates to Lennie's death and how George had to kill him before he actually got hurt, "you hadda, George. i swear you hadda." (steinbeck 107) In the end this shows that if george would have died lennie would have killed multiple people to get revenge vs. george just killing the killer and slightly lying to save himself. All these make up a good part of the book but most importantly irony takes a long stride to be the best and how it is used to form the story of the book. in "Of Mice and Men" by john steinbeck he uses irony to show how lennie says he isn't going to do ... The author John Steinbeck presents the relationship between the two characters, George and Lennie in different ways as they are both different characters and have different personalities. He presents it like a parent and child relationship, with George being the parent and Lennie the child. As soon as the reader is introduced to George and Lennie Steinbeck tells us that, "They had walked in single file down the path". This immediately notifies the reader of the kind of relationship between George and Lennie, it does this by stating "single file". This reminds us of a game called follow the leader. I could also notice when I was reading through the first chapter that George has a sense of authority over Lennie, "you gonna get that wood". This is like a parent telling a child to do his chores. On some occasions though George shows a bit of hatred towards Lennie, he thinks of what he could have if Lennie wasn't around and contrasts that with George. There is also a sense of lack of trust in the relationship between the two men. We see this through the predicament with the work cards. It tells us that George again has to take care of Lennie, and that Lennie isn't trusted by George. Again this idea is portrayed to the reader on page seventeen, we notice that George knows that he needs a plan b as Lennie cannot be trusted so his plan b is to tell Lennie to "hide in the brush until I come for you". This helps us to understand the relationship even further. George also treats Lennie like a dog in one occasion in the chapter, "good boy". This is something a master would say to a dog to encourage them, it also tells us the sort of role in the relationship George has again. In conclusion, we see that Steinbeck uses various techniques to portray the relationship between George and Lennie. But the main method is the idea of George being like a parent to ... • 20. Examples Of Direct Characterization In Of Mice And Men One of the most astounding books Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, took place in one of the darkest time period in American History, the Great Depression. The setting of the book took place in a small country town in Soledad California, near the Salinas River. This book introduces the two main characters, George Milton, and Lennie Small with real life struggles of being migrant farm workers for a ranch. The story opens up with one of the many conflicts that George and Lennie will face throughout the whole story; George and Lennie running away from Weed after feeling a girls red dress. Although Lennie commits certain acts of violence in Of Mice and Men John Steinbeck portrays Lennie Small as having the traits common to the innocent archetype. John Steinbeck portrays Lennie's characterizations through indirect and direct characterizations. Indirect characterization is when the author will describe a person about how they are through context clues but not directly saying it. For example, "No whatta want? "Let's have different color rabbits George." (Steinbeck 16). That is indirect characterization for Lennie being childish because John Steinbeck does not come straight out and say that Lennie is childish, but readers can tell by the context that he is childish. Direct characterization is when the author comes right out to the readers and says the characters traits. For instance, "Behind him walked his opposite, a huge man..." (Steinbeck 2). The methods they suggest do disagree on the usefulness of technology, and whether or not it does more harm than good, but the sources all agree that the discipline to follow the schedule you have created is key. The research agrees that people who schedule and manage their time are in general happier and more satisfied with what they accomplish. Additionally, the experts agree the first step is to prioritize the tasks you wish to accomplish. Martha Beck, a writer for Oprah magazine, banks heavily on the ideologies of Professor Randy Pausch, a computer scientist at Carnegie Mellon University. Pausch made a speech in 1998 titled the Last Lecture where he spoke about achieving dreams after he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. The other sources do not directly state how we should prioritize, but Pausch set up a very clear methodical way. Beck believes in Pausch's quadrant system where one creates four categories: urgent important, important not urgent, unimportant urgent, and unimportant not urgent. After one has settled on what should go in these categories, one throws out the unimportant not urgent pile and forgets about it. Van Winkle does not work for what he wants and lives his life with the bare minimum because he's lazy. Irving presents Van Winkle as lazy. Besides being lazy, Van Winkle is also characterized as irresponsible. Irresponsibility is Van Winkle's attitude towards life and his family. His neglectfulness towards his own family and children is the exact opposite from Van Winkle's helpfulness to the villagers. For instance, Van Winkle was well liked by the children in the village because he plays with them and care for them. However, when it comes to his own children, he neglects them causing them to be "as ragged and wild as if they belonged to nobody" (Irving 10). Van Winkle does little things for the children in town but leaves his own kids by themselves. He never cares for them and lets them go wild while he plays with the children in the town. In ... • 23. Of Mice And Men By John Steinbeck Of Mice and Men, it is not just a band! Of Mice and Men was originally a short novel written by John Steinbeck in the 1930s. Regardless of the shortness in length, though, it is a rather deep and emotional book with quite a few messages behind the fictional storyline. These messages, however, cannot be discovered right off the bat. To genuinely absorb the messages Steinbeck teaches and actually understand the meaning behind them, one must read the book in its entirety. Steinbeck educates readers about these ideas through various ideas and literary devices, which includes the development of the characters, symbolism within them, and a bit of imagery to completely formulate the plot. The characters are, naturally, the biggest part of the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... . . Lennie's so scared all he can think to do is hold on" (Steinbeck 41). Lennie did not know what he was doing wrong, and strangers like the girl who was wearing the red dress do not know him or his 'disability'. George had explained that the girl was scared because she thought Lennie was trying to attack her, and after George finally made Lennie let go of the dress, they were driven to run and hide so neither of them would get caught and sent to jail. Children tend to be very tactile at a young age, they love to reach out and grab a hold of items that peak their interest, considering they truly do not know any better. He does eventually learn that what he does is wrong, but he still does not know what happens, really. For example, just like Steinbeck explains at the beginning of the book how he accidentally kills mice because he wants to pet them and does not recognize his strength. He accidentally did it to a puppy as well, "Why do you got to get killed? You ain't so little as mice . . . I di'n't know you'd get killed so easy . . . I was jus' playin' with him" (Steinbeck 85–7). • 24. My Personal Identity : The Story Of An Identity Crisis Going into this project I was in a little bit of an Identity crisis myself. I was trying to find out where I fit with my parent's hardships back in Ethiopia and as a first–generation student in America. I was trying to figure out how this all ties together within the American society I live in. With the prompt "some students have a background or identity that is so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it." I believed it was time for me to bring these questions out onto paper. At the time I was in 10th grade in a summer course I honestly didn't want to be in. However, because of that I definitely was not the only Rhetor for this paper. In fact, for most of my paper, I spoke via the eyes of those other rhetors, My father was one of the first and most important rhetor in my piece. Just hearing his story of being down on his luck all his life and finally getting the chance to come to a place where he may have an opportunity, not for himself, but for his children was gut–wrenching. It was the central piece of my paper both personally and narratively. The next biggest rhetor in my paper was mymother. She always had her head peeking from the corner the entire process. She continuously urged me to tell more about her and my father in my essay to a point where my teacher began to worry that if I add any more about my parents I'll hit the word limit without talking at all about myself. • 27. Importance Of Friendship In The Great Gatsby Merriam–Webster defines a friend as "One attached to another by affection or esteem". Our success and lives as a whole are altogether based on relationships we create and what we do with them. Communication and the ability to work with others is a basic and required skill in every field of our lives, whether it's applying for a job, meeting with a teacher, talking to a parent or simply spending time with family and friends. It is something taught to preschoolers on their first day and used until their final few. To survive, we must meet "basic needs" known as food, water, shelter and, clothing. Friendship should be acknowledged in this list as a need of each person. By displaying the relationship of Lennie Small and George Milton in Of Mice and Men, John Steinbeck portrays this need for friendship. F. Scott Fitzgerald portrays this idea as well through, Jay Gatsby and Nick Carraway in The Great Gatsby. Friendship is a basic need of any human, needed to survive and thrive in our everyday lives. In The Great Gatsby, Nick and Gatsby needed one another to be successful in each aspect of their lives, their friendship is one unique to both the story and themselves. From the start, Nick was always intrigued by Gatsby and sought out to find more about him, the truth about him. He knew Gatsby was special, unlike anyone he had met before. • 30. Reasons Why George Was Justified In Of Mice And Men Is killing someone right or wrong? In the novella Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck readers are conflicted with this question all around the world. George killed Lennie after Lennie accidentally killed Curley's wife.George and Lennie had known eachother for a long time they even traveled together. George helped Lennie out of multiple situations and killing him was the best way he could think of in the instance of Lennie killing Curley's wife.Even though Lennie and George were friends, George was justified in killing Lennie because Lennie was undisciplined and unsafe. First and foremost, George has to constantly continue to repeat rules to Lennie because Lennie is undisciplined. Like, after Slim gives Lennie a puppy Lennie brings the puppy into the bunkhouse with him even though George told him he was not supposed to. For example, after Lennie comes into the bunkhouse John Steinbeck writes that George " reached down and picked up the tiny puppy from where Lennie had been concealing it against his stomach." (Steinbeck) In this quote it shows that Lennie disobeyed the rules that George has set with him so he could get the puppy this means that Lennie is undisciplined because he broke the rules even though he knew that there were specific rules that were not supposed to be broken. consequently, George has to repeat himself many times and treat Lennie like a child by fixing the things that Lennie messes up and disobeyes the rules. The book tells a story of how two opposite individuals, George and Lennie cope with their problems as they travel around California in search of ranch work. Throughout the story Steinbeck displays realism. This category of literature is where the author does not sugar coat life. Steinbeck does not "romanticize the natural world or human nature" (Curry). In doing so in this type of reality many people have a "dream". To give an example, Lennie and George had a dream of owning a shack on a piece of land. Each time these two individuals thought of the "dream" it creates comfort and security for them because it gave them hope. In Of Mice and Men the "dream"... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the novel Steinbeck displays the harsh reality of life. He displays/writes life as it was during the depression, the time in which the novel took place in. An example of a character's dream not being achieved is Curley's wife. As said before her dream was to become a movie star. However, her dream was not achieved because supposedly her mother destroyed the letter sent to her by a movie producer. "... he was gonna write to me about it... I never got the letter... I always thought my ol' lady stole it," (Steinbeck 88). Nevertheless, us as readers can assume she was "catfished" or lied to. Curley's wife never got or received the letter because she was not meant to be an actor. In doing so, Curley's wife's dream was never achieved even though she believed she could achieve it. Before Curley's wife was happy when she believed in her dream but after her dream "died" her life was meaningfulness. That is why she decided to marry Curly because that was her only way to survive during the depression. This is an example of the natural world of human nature. A good example of this is when her sister is pleading with her to come out of the room that she has locked herself into saying, " Louise, open the door! Steinbeck points out that most of the people that work on the ranch don't have anything to look ahead to. George and Lennie want to have something to look forward to and that is why they hope that it won't happen to them: "With us it ain't like that, We got a future" (Steinbeck 15). • 40. Harshness Of Life In John Steinbeck's Of Mice And Men On February 27, 1902, in Salinas County, California, an American Novelist named John Steinbeck was born. He had an early appreciation for the land, in particular, California's Salinas Valley, which would be a big impact on his writing later on. Steinbeck's life is very similar to the book he would write, Of Mice and Men, which takes place in his hometown Salinas, and also has the same theme of Steinbeck's life. Steinbeck experienced harshness in his life, drifting out of schools for six years until he dropped out for good. There are many themes found in the novel Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, but the most significant theme is the harshness of life, which frequently appears and develops throughout the novel. The harshness of life theme is shown right at the start of the book with two examples. The first example appears on page five when Lennie tries to cover up killing a mouse to George. George sees that Lennie is holding something and when he asks what it is, Lennie says "Jus a dead mouse, George. I didn't kill it. Honest! I found it. I found it dead" (5). This proves the harshness of life because Lennie could not control what he wanted. And in life, in order to succeed and live a good life, you are going to have to be able to control what you want. Another example of the harshness of life occurs when Lennie was talking about him petting the mice and how it's not under his control to stop it. He says "I'd pet 'em, and pretty soon they bit my fingers and I pinched their heads a little and then they was dead" (10). This is a great example of the harshness of life because it shows killing. Lennie kills the fluffy animal, but he did not want to. Steinbeck shows with these two examples that harshness of life doesn't have to include only human beings, it also can be animals. The reason why George and Lennie travel together is in fact because of the harshness of life. When George is talking to Slim about Lennie and how they are together now, he says,"I turns to Lennie and says, 'Jump in.' An' he jumps. Couldn't swim a stroke. He damn near drowned before we could get him"(40). George was being a jerk to Lennie and ended up having to save his life. This is a big harshness of life because George was a jerk to ...
