Themes of Early American Literature
Early American literature does a tremendous job of revealing the exact conditions and challenges
that were faced by the explorers and later by the colonists of the New World. From early shipwrecks
to the later years of small colonies barely surviving through dreadful winters, the literary works of
the time period focus on some very recognizable themes. The theme of any given work – being
simply the unifying subject or idea – is a very important element of any piece of writing. As one
reviews some of this early literature, it becomes obvious that several themes appear repeatedly, and
it is these subjects that were clearly very common among people from all over the New World.

The explorer narratives, however, were not the only ones which described a dark and forbidding
quality of the New World. The colonists at Jamestown and all along the eastern coast suffered
through harsh winters with minimal supplies, causing many deaths and making life in the New
World extremely challenging. For example, in William Bradford's Of Plymouth Plantation he
remarks that 50 of the 102 Pilgrims who landed at Plymouth had died within the first year (Perkins
and Perkins 50). The reasons for the high number of deaths in the colonies vary, but disease and
harsh winters certainly claimed their share. In addition, the colonies struggled to establish crops and
solid dwellings for months or years after they first landed, and supply ships proved to be unreliable
at best. John Smith of the Jamestown Colony is responsible for writing The General History of
Virginia, New England, and the Summer Isles in which he depicted the grievous condition of the
colonists only days after the ships departed and left them to the mercy of the land (Reuben 6). He
wrote, "Being thus left to our fortunes, it fortuned that within ten days scarce ten amongst us could

The Pilgrim's Role In The New Plymouth Colonies
The Pilgrims, were an English group trying to escape religious persecution from the Church of
England, by fleeing to Holland. While in Holland, the Pilgrims received a land patent from the
Virginia Company. The Pilgrims created their own joint–stock company to finance their trip to the
New World. In 1620, led by William Bradford, the Pilgrims boarded the Mayflower and set sail for
Virginia. While Virginia was their destination, a storm blow them off course and they came to land
on a place they called Plymouth. Since the Pilgrims were not in Virginia under the authority of the
Virginia Company, they considered themselves to be independent and created their own government
under the Mayflower Compact. The Mayflower Compact was the fundamental document spelling
out laws for the new Plymouth Colony. It was an agreement or covenant signed by 41 men aboard
the Mayflower. In the covenant the colonists in unity bound themselves together by promising to
abide by the new government laws to ensure protection and survival. Unlike the colonists in
Jamestown, the purpose of the Pilgrims was of a religious nature, their desire to create a pure society

The Separating Puritans (Separatists), like those in Plymouth, believed that the Church of England
was corrupt and that true Christians must separate themselves from it. The non–separating Puritans,

After the passing of King James I, King Charles II became king. Since the kings changed the
colonists were able to create The Virginia House of Burgess which was the first legislative branch of
government in America and it gave the colonists the opportunity to control their government (

the 1600's, history in the past. Both men helped shape and create colonies and they also kept
documents of the times. One was influenced by a person and the other was influenced by dramatic

settlers overcame adversities and created challenges that would go on to change the course of
history. When they first arrived, their inexperience was shown through the death of nearly half their
colony in the first year. The introduction of the Wampanoag tribe to the New England colony was
such a crucial component to their survival and a primary reason they were able to sustain and even
increase their population. The New England colony proved to be successful in establishing a
necessary relationship with the Wampanoag, thriving through their protestant work ethic, and
ultimately creating a stable settlement; however, they failed when it came to maintaining that stable
relationship with the Wampanoag, their lack of experience in the New World, and the hypocritical

Another similarity between William Bradford and Dekanawida is the rules that they enforced when
leading their people. Both sets of rules and laws were centered around avoiding violence and
preserving the wellbeing of the society. In the Iroquois Constitution, Dekanawida states, " People of
the Five Nations members of a certain clan shall recognize every other member of that clan,
irrespective of the Nation, as relatives." which basically means that tribe members should treat each
other kindly. Bradford probably had similar rules in the Plymouth Colony. These rules are what
allowed the success of the two groups. The final similarity between William Bradford and
Dekanawida is their belief in destiny. They both believe that a higher force is what led them to take

Bradford's belief in destiny. He believes that providence led him to take on his role as a leader.
Dekanawida's beliefs come mostly from his past. He even said that "It is my business to stop the

When the first American settlement on Roanoke Island was established in 1585 it's primary force,
Sir Walter Raleigh, had no idea that this "New World" would evolve into one of the most powerful
voices in the modern world. But before it developed it would have to shaped by it's founders from

with a group of English merchants, hoped to get rich in this new land, and William Bradford, a

One example of this belief is when smith declared "...people that have small wealth to live on, here
by their labor [they] may live exceeding well." Overall, Smith's piece is an extremely persuasive
piece that hopes to convince potential settlers to move to the "New World" by portraying early
American life as a place for great opportunities to start over, live easily, and to turn small fortunes
into a great wealth.
In William Bradford's Of Plymouth Plantation he articulates that living in young America was a
tough life that included dangerous living, starvation and disease. Bradford sailed from Holland with
the Pilgrims and when their first governor died in 1621 Bradford was elected. Bradford's opinion
was well respected in the community and he was reelected to his position thirty times. This position
gave him the ability to have many of his works published and read by many. An example of him
describing the new world as dangerous is when he painted the picture of a wicked forest across "the
whole country" . He went on to describe this forest as having a "wild and savage hue". Another
problem addressed in William Bradford's piece is starvation. He described that once winter arrived
many people began to die and by February "half [the] company died". Finally Bradford described

There were a few people that had a great influence on the early settlements in the New World. Two
such men were William Bradford and John Smith. Their similarities and differences are evident in
the way these men impacted the two colonies. John Smith and William Bradford were both writers,
Christians, and early leaders; however, William Bradford preformed his duties with much stronger
morals, spirituality, and humility. William Bradford and John Smith were both early American
writers; however, their writing styles were very different. They began writing around the same time
with Smith starting in 1608 and Bradford starting in 1630. Smith wrote three books: A Description
of New England, The General History, and A True Relation. However, Bradford wrote only one
book called Of Plymouth Plantation. Bradford's writing style is easy to read but still well written.
Smith's writing, on the other hand, is difficult to follow. In Smith's The General History, he
expresses that he has a low regard for the Native Americans in the way he frequently refers to them
as savages. On the other hand, Bradford demonstrates a high regard for them when he wrote about
them helping the Plymouth settlement. Just as their writing styles are different, so are their motives
for writing. Bradford wrote because he did not want the Plymouth Plantation settlement to be
forgotten, whereas Smith wrote for money and to promote exploration of the New World. The theme

Bradford provides in the document for the formation of government is when he states that they will
be 'a civil body politic'. This means that they would be under an organized government in the New
World. He says that they will together in the presence of God and to each other. He also states that
they will be equality in the laws so that they fit to the people's needs and involve little trouble to the
