This document discusses operational maturity levels (OMLs) and predominant business models (PBMs) for solution provider companies. It finds that companies in the top quartile of financial performance have OMLs of 4 or 5, implementing best practices more effectively across strategy, marketing, sales, services and finance. PBMs are identified based on revenue mix, as this determines the appropriate benchmarks and best practices for a company. Higher OMLs are achieved by mastering traits across five functional areas. Understanding one's own PBM is critical for solution providers to improve performance by selecting the right benchmarks and best practices for their specific business model.
150408 wpc business simplification overview v fDavid Toth
A perspective and guide to business simplification in the 21st century. Companies may need to consider first simplifying in order to grow and/or achieve their desired level of earnings.
Intense competition and slow growth in mature markets have magnified uncertainty and put pressure on costs, just as regulators are escalating their demands. Research shows that CFOs and other senior finance executives believe that their function can play a key role but the ability to impact these challenges depends on levels of maturity and preparedness, which vary widely across companies and industries, as well by sub-functions. Here are the key findings from our research on how enterprises are driving transformation to achieve business impact.
Wilson Perumal & Company is a management consultancy that works with grocery retailers. They have identified 5 key trends shaping the industry: 1) Demographic shifts require extensive localization from retailers; 2) Online grocery sales are growing rapidly, creating opportunities and challenges around omni-channel integration; 3) Traditional promotional strategies are becoming less effective at driving sales lifts, requiring innovation in promotions and more efficient execution; 4) Personalized customer experiences and value-added services are becoming expected by consumers as retailers gain more consumer data insights; 5) Contraction and consolidation among large grocery chains requires an update to operating models. The document discusses each trend in more detail and its implications for retailers.
This document discusses managing complexity in operating models. It notes that operating models define how strategy is executed, but they often become misaligned over time due to organic and inorganic growth. This leads companies to struggle with inconsistent performance, inability to adapt, and higher costs. The document advocates designing an optimized "best fit" operating model through assessing capabilities, targets, industry dynamics, and strategy. It also notes the importance of change management capabilities to successfully implement a new operating model.
The document discusses outsourcing, defining it as procuring services from a third party to perform activities traditionally handled internally. Key reasons for outsourcing include reducing costs and improving efficiency. The main types of outsourcing covered are business process outsourcing, knowledge process outsourcing, legal process outsourcing, recruitment process outsourcing, and engineering process outsourcing. Both advantages like lower costs and disadvantages like loss of control are outlined. The outsourcing market has grown significantly over the past few decades and now represents billions in annual spending across various industries.
The document describes components of an operating model including business units, processes, people, ownership, and metrics. It provides examples of operating models from Shell Chemicals, GlaxoSmithKline, and John Deere. The operating model expresses how an organization operates across business and technology domains to guide investment decisions and enable growth.

Adaptation in the Shadow of Target Operating ModelNathan Allchin
Risk and opportunities for your engagement in an environment of strategic change.
Our clients are now having to revisit some of the fundamental assumptions of their corporate and business strategy, and as a result, many of these clients will increase their appetite for strategic change to their business model and operating model.
This has the potential to be an exciting time for us as consultants, yet it is not always a blessing to live in exciting times. To maximise our opportunities to deliver value, we need to appreciate how this change in the environment might impact our engagements, and what actions and mitigations we can take for the mutual benefit of the client and ourselves:
- What is driving clients to embrace strategic changes to their Business and Operating Models;
- What the emergence of a client’s Target Operating Model can mean for your engagement;
- What approaches you should take as consultants to adapt and thrive in this environment.

Making the Case for a Project Management OfficeRTM Consulting
Every delivery leader agrees that consistent, standard, repeatable delivery execution is the goal of their organization. For PSOs of any reasonable size, a Project Management Office is essential to achieving this goal. Too often, however, organizations do not have one, have abandoned them or have not adequately structured and funded them to be effective. This is a missed opportunity to bring more value to your organization through more consistent project performance and execution. The fact is there is a strong correlation between the existence of a PMO and project success, however, not all PMOs are the same. Each organization is different, and PMOs can be structured to meet the unique needs of each organization.
Bottom line - PMOs are worth the investment. Having one signals to your organization, your company and your customers that you take delivery excellence seriously. In addition, PMOs deliver measurable value through better project execution (on time, on budget). For a PSO with 500 billable staff, a 3% improvement in project margin can result in over $2.75M to the bottom line.
Clearly explain the value proposition and strategic value of Business Process Management to top management. Make a successful business case for BPM implementation to automate department and company wide processes.

The document discusses sales operations as a service (SOaaS) as an alternative to just using sales performance management (SPM) software. SOaaS combines cloud technologies with collaborative business process management to provide services related to sales planning, compensation, productivity, activities, and insights. It argues that SOaaS can help organizations more rapidly adapt to changes and improve sales performance more than SPM software alone. The benefits of SOaaS include mitigating risk, increasing speed, multiplying capacity, improving focus, defining accountability, and reducing costs for sales organizations.

Why Partners Who Charge for Technical Assessments Have Higher Growth and ProfitFortinet
The document discusses how charging for technical assessments leads to higher growth and profits for IT solution providers. It argues that solution providers in the top quartile of financial performance typically charge for assessments, even for new customers, while lower performers usually do not charge. Charging allows for higher quality assessments and identifies more value drivers for the customer. It also helps differentiate the solution provider and access higher-level decision makers. This positions the provider to pursue and win more deals with high value customers, defined as those seeking premium solutions. The typical pre-sales process of doing free assessments often fails to differentiate the provider sufficiently. By charging for assessments, it creates an exception in the customer's procurement process that gets the provider's proposal in front of senior
The Importance of Targeting your Customers - Cross Selling ExecutionFortinet
This document discusses the importance of targeting customers and cross-selling for IT solution providers. It states that top-performing solution providers carefully define their target customer profile so that all of their solutions can be consumed by those customers. They then focus on winning only customers that match the target profile. These solution providers also integrate cross-selling goals into sales compensation and do account planning to identify cross-selling opportunities, which are then incorporated into marketing and sales efforts. The primary impacts of this approach are aligning solutions to the target customer profile and targeting customers so they are increasingly similar in characteristics.
This document provides 4 tips for finding a quality unified threat management (UTM) security solution:
1. Look for independent lab testing to ensure the solution is proven effective at security.
2. Consider solutions that consolidate other functions like switching or email security to streamline management.
3. Look for solutions that are easy to manage with quick installation, recommended default settings, and low ongoing effort.
4. Consider market adoption and sales trends to find solutions that are proven successes in the real world.
In the new digital economy, data – and what you do with that data – is the key to success. Consumers and employees alike now demand instant access to critical information that allows them to solve problems, make informed decisions, or conduct transactions. But that’s just the part of the data equation most of us can see.
To effectively compete in today’s digital market, and capitalize on the data being collected and processed, organizations need to be able to respond quickly to market shifts and consumer demands, fine tune production, realign resources, and manage infrastructure. Which is why nearly three-fourths of all organizations have begun to converge their information technology (IT) infrastructure with their traditionally isolated operational technology (OT) networks.

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software FuzzingAftab Hussain
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.
