in all shapes and sizes,
and each one has a different
use and application. Understanding
the ins and outs of windows can be a
real “pane”, that’s why we created
The Ultimate Guide to Windows,
to help you understand the following elements:

styles windowsof
casement|w i n d o w s
Casement Windows are quickly identified with the crank handle that is at the bottom
of the window. With the turn of a crank, casement windows open outward from the
center, hinging on the left and right borders of the window frame. For the beautiful
days when you need to let the fresh air in, Casement Windows offer excellent ventila-
tion; but even when the weather turns chilly, these windows seal all around, in order
to keep the heat in your house.
double-hung|w i n d o w s
A classic window style, Double-Hung Windows move vertically on two separate
movable panels that slide up and down to open. Most people are familiar with
Double-Hung windows, but did you know that these windows have the ability to
create a natural convection effect? By opening both the top and bottom windows,
cold air circulates in at the bottom and hot air is released through the top. Perfect for
a stuffy room…or to let the smoke out from your most recent baking experiment.
picture|w i n d o w s
Picture Windows are large windows that allow you too see the fullness of a
beautiful view outside. They also allow you to see more indoors, as they let in a
maximum amount of natural light. These windows are typically placed in a kitchen,
living room, or other large room. Since picture windows are stationary, they cannot be
opened; think of it like a windshield on a car.
Bow/bay|w i n d o w s
Made popular during the Victorian era, Bay (or Bow) Windows have become a beau-
tiful window alternative for many homes. In addition to the feeling of living in a castle,
bay windows also give you more interior space, as they protrude out from the interior
of the home. The classic bow window features stationary windows in the center and
two casement windows on either side. These windows provide beautiful stylistic el-
ements to both the interior and exterior of the home and they also create a usable
space for decoration or a bench seat in the ‘bow’.
awning|w i n d o w s
Awning Windows are the cousins to casement windows, they both operate using a
crank system, but awning windows are hinged at the top, rather than the side. One of
the greatest advantages of awning windows is their ability to be opened even in the
rain, since they open outward from the top; these windows remain true to their name,
providing a perfect awning from the rain.
Another excellent use for these windows is the ability to let hot air escape from a
room, especially when placed near the top of the wall.
sliding|w i n d o w s
If you recently went through a drive through, then you’ve seen a Sliding Window.
However, these windows aren’t only useful for selling hamburgers and coffee, they
are perfect for home use as well. Sliding windows unlatch and slide left and right to
open and close. This mechanism is perfect for windows near patios or walkways be-
cause they will not protrude out from the wall. In case of an emergency evacuation,
sliding windows are usually large enough to escape through, a convenient safety
precaution especially on ground level floors.
contemporary|w i n d o w s
Windows are one of the most prominent design elements of the interior and exterior
of the home; with this in mind, as modern homes are being built, Contemporary
Windows are installed to stay in step with modern design practices. No matter what
style you have dreamed up, contemporary windows can be designed to meet your
imagination with all types of designer glass options.
energy-efficient|w i n d o w s
As the seasons change, your heating and cooling bill doesn’t have to. One of the
best ways to lower your monthly bills is to increase energy efficiency by replacing old
windows. Nearly every major brand offers state of the art windows with a wide variety
of styles; and since these windows are designed to save you money, they could end
up paying for themselves!

Windows do more than let
natural light and fresh air into the
room; they are also a great canvas
for creative interior decorating
projects. Homeowners can
creatively enhance their windows
by incorporating one of the many
great suggestions below.
Canopy Curtains: These
curtains will do more than keep
the light out, they also make
an excellent canopy design by
hanging two extra long swaths
of fabric from a bed crown
instead of a rod.
Paint: Window frames can be-
come a bit bland with white or
wood grain frames. One great
way to add some flavor to a
window is to paint the frame
black or your favorite color. This
will add character and another
color element for you interior
design project.

Roman Shades: Pasta and
candles aren’t the only things
that romans did well – Roman
shades are a simple design
upgrade that can transform any
room. Try simple white roman
shades to add a light and airy
feel to your dining room.
Bamboo: Going for a beachy
feel or an island theme? Bam-
boo roll up blinds may be the
perfect accent to complete your
nautical themed room. You can
make your own or purchase
them in stores!
Shutters: You can bring a little
Wild West flare into your home
with this unique wooden shutter
design. If you have a western
themed room, or if you simply
want to add some rustic ear-
ly-American flare to your home,
this window treatment is the
perfect idea.

Silk: Going for an elegant look?
Nothing says luxury like full silk
curtains in demure blue. In or-
der to get the volume you need
to pull of this look, you’ll need
enough fabric to pin-tuck the
curtains, and then you simply
let the silk spill over on to the
floor like the train of a wedding
dress. Silk is the perfect curtain
material for a dinning room or a
romantic bedroom, just adjust
the mood by changing the color
of silk.
Simple Shutters: The simplic-
ity of white shutters makes for
a style upgrade that can be
added to nearly any room in
the house. For and easy, trop-
ical style, dress windows with
low-maintenance white or off
white shutters.

Chevron: In fashion, horizontal
stripes give the appearance of
greater bulk and a fuller look,
this concept works equally as
well with curtains. To give a
full fabric look, while spending
less money, use a horizontal or
chevron stripe, like these neu-
tral-striped curtains in this sitting
room.
Grommet Curtains: White Grom-
met curtains are the best of both
worlds. When drawn, they block
sunlight and lend privacy, how-
ever, when opened; they are
nearly indistinguishable against
white walls.
Color Code: Who decided that
curtains had to be a single col-
or? You probably match cer-
tain colors in your outfits, and
you can also color code your
drapes. Try using three different
shades of one color, giving the
room a modern flash and allow-
ing space to be broken up.
care cleaning&
Label and tape adhesive should be removed by alco-
hol-based cleaners on small glass areas only. After this
is removed, thoroughly wet the glass and rinse with plain
water.
Glass can be cleaned with regular or ammonia-based
glass cleaners.
Vinyl PVC products can be cleaned with a solution of
mild soap and water. For heavier cleaning tasks, the win-
dow manufacturer recommends commercially advertised
household cleaners. Use any non-abrasive cleaner for
tough jobs. Do not use solvents, paint removers or sharp
objects to clean your windows and patio doors.
Condensation is caused by excess interior relative hu-
midity in the home. It is your responsibility to control your
home’s relative humidity. For more information, request a
copy of Your Guide to Common Household Condensation.
If mildew is a problem in your area, use an appropriate
cleaner or mildew controller found in your local store.
The tracks of the double-hung and sliding windows are
exposed to the outdoor elements, which can contain
abrasive elements such as dirt, leaves, sand, grease,
soot, etc. If these elements are not removed, they can
be ground into the vinyl tracks when the sashes are op-
erated. A minimum semi-annual cleaning is recommend-
ed. These tracks can be cleaned with a small, stiff nylon
brush, then wiped down with a soft cloth. If necessary,
an occasional light coat of silicone spray lubricant on the
track of the sliding window, will help to ease the operation
of your window without leaving an oily residue which can
collect more abrasive elements.
Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for safe use
of any chemical or cleaner. Any cleaning information sug-
gested in this manual is only to assist you. The window
manufacturer assumes no responsibility for results ob-
tained which are dependent on the chemical solutions as
prepared, and quantity and method of application.

CleaningTips
Open the top and bottom sash for
improved ventilation.
Use both hands to support sashes
while tilting them in to clean.
Support the sashes when they are
in the cleaning position.
Make sure the tilt latches are fully
engaged after tilting sashes back
into the operating position.
Make sure the top sash on a dou-
ble-hung window is closed and
up all the way before locking the

Leave the lock in the locked posi-
tion when closing the window, this
will damage the keeper.
Attempt to remove the sashes on
double-hung windows.
Use oil base spray lubricants such

Use solvents to clean the win-
dows.
Use the crank on a casement win-
dow without unlocking the window
first.

• If children are around, be sure to keep windows closed to avoid
the risk of falling out of a window.
• Always ensure that furniture is placed away from a window to
protect children who may be tempted to climb on it.
• Remember that insect screens are designed to keep bugs out
and they are not meant to provide any protection from an individual
