The 2015 U.S. Mobile App Report - COMSCORERomain Fonnier
Digital media time in the U.S. has exploded recently – growing nearly 50 percent in the past two years, with more than three-fourths of that growth directly attributable to the mobile app. Mobile has grown so fast that it’s now the leading digital platform, with total activity on smartphones and tablets accounting for 62 percent of digital media time spent, and apps alone now representing the majority of digital media time at 54 percent.
Why have apps become such a powerful force in our daily media lives? The power of habit. The 2015 U.S. Mobile App Report explores the dynamics of mobile media consumption, audiences, and user habits to understand what’s behind this surge in mobile activity, and how publishers and advertisers can take advantage.
Some key topics covered in the report include:
The implication of mobile apps’ growing share of digital media usage time
The mobile web’s critical role in expanding audience reach
The value of the home screen, how users behave with it, and other consumer habits on smartphones
Deep dives into some of the fastest growing apps, such as Tinder, Uber, Timehop and Fitbit
The key role of social and entertainment apps, and how they account for the majority of users’ app engagement
The top apps among Millennials, and this group’s influence in all facets of app behavior
The effectiveness of mobile advertising, including research on native in-app video ads

Each year, Mary Meeker unveils her fascinating Internet Trends presentation. And each year, her insights are inestimable and eagerly awaited.
But each year, I have a problem with her slides. As a presentation designer, I find them rough and busy. To the point it makes them hard to understand.
So this year, here’s my humble attempt at redesigning them !
At Activate, we've identified the 9 most important insights for tech and media in 2016. Key points:
* The average American spends more time on tech and media than on work or sleep
* Messaging will blow past social networking as the dominant personal media activity
* The next big winners in streaming music and audio are already (quietly!) here
* The long-awaited cord cutting moment isn't coming any time soon
* There is potential for a "cable killer" to show up, but it won't look like you expect
* E-sports and wagering really are going to change the game in gaming
* Want to get rich in the App Store? Good luck!
* These are the companies grabbing all the money in consumer tech and media
* And we demonstrate a simple way to predict what acquisitions and partnerships tech and media companies will be making to stay competitive

mPOV3 Crafting Mobile Moments: The Union Between Creativity and AutomationPubMatic
The world is generating a near infinite supply of mobile ad impressions. U.S. consumers, alone, are estimated to collectively generate eight billion “mobile moments” per day, which means an average of 46 glances at a mobile phone per consumer every day.[1] Simply put, a “mobile moment” is that instance in which a person pulls out a mobile device to get what he or she wants, immediately and in context.
Getting the most out of a small mobile screen is far more challenging than with other platforms. The biggest challenge is that a consumer’s state of mind and intent during this ephemeral moment is far less predictable than when a consumer is on a desktop at work or on the couch watching television. In order for advertisers to serve relevant content and marketing messages on mobile devices, they need to understand these points in time and collaborate to target them more deliberately than on other platforms.
In order to successfully create these mobile moments, publishers and advertisers need to understand three key components: 1) the dynamics between mobile web and mobile app usage, 2) how consumers are spending time on their mobile devices and 3) how to use technographic data (i.e. data sourced directly from a mobile device), such as geolocation data, device ID and browser type as a substitute for cookie targeting. (More detail on this in the full report.)
PubMatic today released the third in a series of three mobile point-of-view (mPOV) studies, Crafting Mobile Moments: The Union Between Creativity and Automation, which illustrates a three-prong framework that can help publishers and advertisers collaborate on constructing a mobile moment:

Climate Science Flows: Enabling Petabyte-Scale Climate Analysis with the Eart...Globus
The Earth System Grid Federation (ESGF) is a global network of data servers that archives and distributes the planet’s largest collection of Earth system model output for thousands of climate and environmental scientists worldwide. Many of these petabyte-scale data archives are located in proximity to large high-performance computing (HPC) or cloud computing resources, but the primary workflow for data users consists of transferring data, and applying computations on a different system. As a part of the ESGF 2.0 US project (funded by the United States Department of Energy Office of Science), we developed pre-defined data workflows, which can be run on-demand, capable of applying many data reduction and data analysis to the large ESGF data archives, transferring only the resultant analysis (ex. visualizations, smaller data files). In this talk, we will showcase a few of these workflows, highlighting how Globus Flows can be used for petabyte-scale climate analysis.

Graspan: A Big Data System for Big Code AnalysisAftab Hussain
We built a disk-based parallel graph system, Graspan, that uses a novel edge-pair centric computation model to compute dynamic transitive closures on very large program graphs.
We implement context-sensitive pointer/alias and dataflow analyses on Graspan. An evaluation of these analyses on large codebases such as Linux shows that their Graspan implementations scale to millions of lines of code and are much simpler than their original implementations.
These analyses were used to augment the existing checkers; these augmented checkers found 132 new NULL pointer bugs and 1308 unnecessary NULL tests in Linux 4.4.0-rc5, PostgreSQL 8.3.9, and Apache httpd 2.2.18.

3 Challenges & Opportunities
39. • Tech media sometimes uncritically promotes all emerging
platforms as ascendant “next big thing”;
• New platforms are appealing (first mover advantage, lack
of price discovery, etc.) but developers need to be able to
discern hype & time deployment correctly.

40. • Example: VR vs. Mobile Gaming

3 Challenges & Opportunities
41. OPPORTUNITY: Opportunities to reach new audience
emerge constantly as connected devices proliferate and
create platforms;
CHALLENGE: Difficult to know which platforms will truly
reach scale, and being early same as being wrong.

• World governments are beginning to take note of
the proliferation of disinformation / propaganda on
the largest social networks;
45. 3 Challenges & Opportunities
• World governments are beginning to take note of
the proliferation of disinformation / propaganda on
the largest social networks;
• The companies that operate these networks are
reacting slowly / reluctantly, and regulation seems
likely to be introduced.
47. OPPORTUNITY: These types of changes are difficult for big
organizations to react to and satisfy quickly, creating space
for nimble companies to comply & accelerate.
CHALLENGE: Laws around use (and possibly even collection)
of certain data produces challenges in keeping products and
advertising compliant.

• The biggest mobile advertising platforms are
becoming siloed, both in terms of tool offerings
and inventory offerings;
• The biggest inventory sources are vying to own
advertiser data as a form of lock-in.
53. 3 Challenges & Opportunities
• Event-based bidding via machine learning makes
advertising on that channel more efficient, but
advertiser doesn’t own the optimization;
54. 3 Challenges & Opportunities
• Event-based bidding via machine learning makes
advertising on that channel more efficient, but
advertiser doesn’t own the optimization;
• Some platforms are merging all proprietary
channels into single interfaces, mixing performant
channels with non-performant and charging for all.
55. OPPORTUNITY: Platform-specific tools and inventory help
advertisers reach appropriate audiences more efficiently;
CHALLENGE: Walled gardens create scaling difficulty for
advertisers. Analytics / infrastructure “lock in” can limit
growth.
