• Properties of solids include:
• Definite shape and volume.
• Very incompressible.
• Particles have relatively little energy.
• Solid particles vibrate in place.
• Solids often have crystalline structures.

4. Types
• There are two basic types;
1. Crystalline solid
• Well ordered solid
2. Amorphous solid
• Shapeless or super-cooled solid.

5. Crystalline Solid or Crystal
•Asolid substance having regular,
repitative and three dimensional
arrangement of its particles (atoms, ions
and molecules) in it.
• Examples are ice and diamond.

6. Amorphous Solid
• Amorphous means “shapeless”.
• It is non-crystalline solid in which the atoms and molecules are
not organized in a definite lattice pattern.
• It includes plastic and rubber and cotton candy.
• Although, amorphous solid can have short-range order of its
particles.
• A crystalline solid can be converted to amorphous by melting
and then sudden cooling of it.
