The approach is named after a city in north Italy which has
13 infant – toddler centres for children under 3 and 22 preschool centres for children aged 3-6. Loris Malaguzzi was
the teacher who developed the philosophy on the approach
to teaching, learning and support/encouragement.

The following factors are inherent in the Reggio
Approach:
• the image of the child
• the expressive arts in the pre-school
establishment
• Design (progettazione)
• community and parent–school relationships
• environment
• teachers as learners.

“The Reggio Emilia philosophy is an approach to
teaching, learning and advocacy for children.” Simply put
The Reggio Emilia approach is a way of observing the
knowledge children have, what they are curious about and
what may challenge them. Also, The Reggio Emilia approach
is solely based on the imagination of the children and how
the learning and teaching is implemented.
“Our image of children no longer considers them as isolated and
egocentric, does not only see them as engaged in action with objects, does
not emphasise only the cognitive aspects, does not belittle feelings or what
is not logical and does not consider with ambiguity the role of the
reflective domain. Instead our image of the child is rich in
potential, strong, powerful, competent and, most of all, connected to
adults and children.” (Loris Malaguzzi)

This approach links to creativity as the curriculum in the Reggio
Emilia pre-school centres are built around arrange of visual and
expressive arts. Therefore, children are being given the opportunity
to express their ideas, thoughts and feelings in a selection of
different ways. For example, a child may see an insect during an
outdoor activity and create a picture on the image they have just
seen or decide to act it out or even asks multiple questions about
the insect they have just seen. This is creative because the child is
using their imagination, exploring new ideas and solving problems.
In the Reggio Emilia
Approach, practitioners have the
role to work alongside the child
rather than just be an instructor.
Teachers are also encouraged to
plan lessons based on the child’s
interests and to partake in
activities instead of solely
supervising

The environment is also vital and is
frequently referred to as being the ‘third
teacher.’ This is due to the fact that the
environment can allow children to make
sense of the world. For example, via the
effective planning of the classroom space
but also the outdoor areas as children can
experience nature first hand and learn new
things e.g. the textures of different outdoor
surroundings.

In addition, teachers would be wise to
not make judgements about the child
but should pay careful attention to the
presentation to the end product as it
gives insight into the child’s thinking.
